And today we are talking to Nina Froriep of Clockwise Productions. Nina, it's great to have you on.Thank you so much for the opportunity to talk about what I love talking about.Yes, that's what we like to hear. So Nina, you own Clockwise Productions. Do you want to kind of start with an intro of that business and what you all do?Yeah. So, Clockwise Productions has actually been around for 25 years. The last six years of which, we have have been working as video marketers, before that, we were just filmmaker, producer, director, that kind of stuff. So what we do now is we take people who want to grow their businesses with not just any client, but their ideal clients with video, and we show them how to create videos, but our focus really is not on the production end. Our focus is on the strategy and content part of it, because in the end, that is where you need to focus, if you are a small business owner or service provider, a business coach, which is a lot of our audience, are business coaches. You're in the business of disrupting something, you're in the business of helping people, so you need to be seen and heard. So strategy and content or content and strategy are sort of the focus of what we do.Excellent. And that's what the business does. How about your own background? You said that the business has been around for a while. What kind of work were you doing 10 years ago and that type of thing?Clockwise. So, yeah. So as I said, Clockwise has been in business for 25 years. I've been in the business for about 30 years. So Clockwise happened fairly quickly. We were a traditional production video or film back then, even production company.

This is a podcast where we talk about all things video and how they relate to your business. Today, we're talking to Tyler Lessard, who is the VP of Marketing at Vidyard and also the Co-Author of The Visual Sale. Tyler, it's great to have you.- Hey, thanks so much. It's a real pleasure to be here. And as you know, I've been passionate about this world of video in business for quite a few years now. So it's absolutely a pleasure to be here, to share some of the things I've learned, and what we're expecting as we head into 2021.- Yeah, it's an exciting time for people in video, right? As long as you're able to adapt a little to all the craziness that's going on right now. So the first thing I want you to do, Tyler, is just give us an intro, I intro'd your title, but tell us a little bit about, your position, Vidyard, kinda what goes on there and what you all do.- Yeah, happy to. So as I mentioned, I'm VP Marketing here at Vidyard, and we are a video technology company, we've been around for just over 10 years, and there are effectively two parts to what we do. We are a full video hosting management publishing and analytics platform for businesses. So businesses will use us to publish videos on their websites, on their various digital properties in their marketing campaigns. And we provide the ability to customize the video playback experience through our own player, create interactive videos to track rich engagement data on the backend on who's watching which content and to integrate that back into your marketing and sales tools. And that's been a big focus for us is helping businesses get a better degree of knowledge and understanding of who's actually engaging with my videos, because more and more they're becoming a really material part, both the marketing and sales process.

We're supporting regional companies with global resources. [00:01:40] And it's a perfect time for this type of organization to be in our community supporting entrepreneurs. The reason why you and I met was because we're both entrepreneurs and we love the business community. Thanks for tuning in. _______Transcription:Neil K Carroll - Hey, welcome to this, the first Smarter Business Podcast that we're recording via Zoom because we're all still stuck at home. And on this episode of the Smarter Business Podcast, we actually have two guests. We have Paul Greiner, who, anybody who's watched probably already knows. Paul's got a bit of an announcement today, and then we have Dan Wangelin from Renoun Creative. Renoun Creative is a great partner to Vidwheel, we do a lot of work with them, and they have some really exciting news about a big launch that they're doing. So, Dan, I will give you a moment to just go ahead and introduce yourself and you can tell us a little bit about what Renoun does.Dan Wangelin - So, I'm the owner and founder or Renoun Creative, I founded the company in 2006. Back then, it was I was had a full-time position, so I like to say that I had a nine to five and then Renoun Creative was my five to nine. But really, it was more like, seven to 2:30 in the morning. But long story short, we've grown the company now to be an agency of six people with a really solid roster of clients. We have clients all over the US. And recently, we've relaunched ourselves as the customer success agency. And what that means basically, is we identified a long time ago that, we have certain deliverables that people think of us for branding, websites, print design, graphic design, which is great, but ultimately, people need that work to work for them, they need a return on that. So it was a natural progression to go from design, to marketing, and then marketing creates leads and then what we're doing is we're gonna start helping people manage those leads, so they can actually convert to sales and then after that, and they're a customer, helping those customers actually become a referral source. So it really we talked about the Flywheel and HubSpot of it, it's really kind of that idea where not only are we creating the initial deliverables and creating marketing plans, get some marketing execution, but then ultimately, really creating something that reduces churn, increases revenue, helps people be more profitable because we make them more efficient with the resources that they have and really helping them deliver true value in terms of their sales and marketing.Neil K Carroll - Why don't you tell I guess, the listeners and watchers why we brought Paul in on this kind of Renoun Creative Podcast.

This episode is one of the last ones that we were able to record before the onset of the COVID pandemic. The three talk about agile planning, fostering a strong startup community in Buffalo, and Techstars itself. The conversation is great, especially if you're in the startup community. And if you like what you hear, share this with your friends.Paul Greiner - Well, thanks for coming out, guys. It's great to have you here. And let's actually--Clark Dever - Thanks for having us. Paul - Greiner - Let's just start by you introducing yourself, your organization and a little bit about how you came to end up where you are.Jack Greco - Cool, you wanna go first?Clark Dever - Sure. My name's Clark Dever. I'm the program director at Techstars in Buffalo, longtime community organizer in Buffalo and startup community. Been at it around 10 years as a volunteer. Founded companies, been the first employee in at a couple companies. Done some entrepreneurship. So just kind of the wide background that I had between organizing events and people, and then my experience building things from zero to one, is kind of what brought me on board.Jack Greco - Cool, I'm Jack Greco. I am the executive director and tag-team partner of Clark for Techstars. I moved to Buffalo about five years ago. I was a co-founder at a local company called ACV Auctions. Prior to that, and even during that, I really worked with and supported founders in genesis activities. So starting the company, getting the company up and running. I wore a lot of different hats and played a lot of different roles. Involved in the community in a different way, probably much more one-on-one, where Clark was more of an instigator and collaborator of large groups. I'm really excited with some of the stuff we're doing at Techstars.Paul Greiner - Cool.Jack Greco - And we're both dads.Paul Greiner - Oh. That's important, too.Jack Greco - Yeah.Paul Greiner - Yeah, that's a part of your life, right?Jack Greco - Yes. Small part.

Actually, last year it's been 25 years, and it's been a rollercoaster ride most of the time because that's what business is all about. What we do is we design and build exhibits for companies that attend trade shows or any type of face to face marketing event. It could be a sponsorship event. It could be a conference. But as long as it's an event where you need to brand your business, make people aware of who you are, and what you do, we design a display that does that for you. Yes, so, but we do focus on displays that are more modular in nature as opposed to custom. We don't have a shop. We do have a little shop, but not a big one.

Howard Consulting and we are a full service, non-dilutive, development and evaluation company. And that's a lot to take in right there. So what we do three things, really, three services or products for our clients. We help them find funding, non-dilutive funding, meaning they're not going to take equity out of their company or their program or their project to get that funding. The second thing we do is help them prepare for that funding. And that might mean proposal preparation or helping them with the documentation behind the scenes. And then the third thing is evaluation. So a lot of times when there are public dollars involved, the funder wants reporting. Did you do what you said you were going to do with the dollars? Did you meet your goals and objectives? If you didn't, that's OK. But we want evidence that you made strides towards those and that's evaluation in a nutshell. So yeah, we find it apply for and measure it. Our target audience tends to be STEM based organizations, meaning they're trying to solve social, environmental or just industrial problems that are going to benefit the community in some way, shape or form. And it could be Higher Ed, could be K through 12, could be a nonprofit organization, but a lot of our clients are startups that are doing things from maybe they're working on cardiovascular technique, you know, stroke treatment. Sure, maybe it's cancer treatment. Maybe it's, you know, real time water contamination detections or maybe it's something in the Department of Defense sphere.

So, if cool, I'm going to jump right into it, Pat.Pat Whalen: Sure. A lot to talk about.Pat Whalen: When you get old guys on here, it's gonna take a while and get.John Osberg: A lot of awesome accomplishments though. Pat.Pat Whalen: Yeah. So. Well, let's start with the present. We just had a soft opening. I call it a soft opening on November 4th of a coworking incubator in Niagara Falls, New York, as you mentioned, called TReC. The Niagara Global Tourism Institute operates it. We have Sherpas. Pat Whalen: Talk a little bit about the story behind Sherpas. TReC is our name. It does have a meeting, those four letters. We don't tell anybody what it is though. So, we thought about a trek and a trek up Mount Everest. And the more I thought about that, the more we thought, well, this is an interesting thing. How do you get to the top of Mount Everest? So, I did some research and found that on average year twelve hundred people try. Six hundred make it. Six hundred don't. So, lore is that 50 percent of all new businesses fail. So, I thought, well, that's an interesting parallel. And the people that make it to the top of Mt. Everest, all of them have a Sherpa.

I love what you're doing. The Gist is an inbound marketing agency, simply put. So, a lot of people know inbound marketing is a process for generating leads and then nurturing those leads. And certainly, we help businesses do that. But really, my view of inbound is a process of enabling marketers and business owners to really look at the entire business lifecycle through marketing, sales, and customer service, identify opportunities to reduce friction, provide amazing customer experience and build loyal relationships that really help unlock sustainable growth. And if that sounds vague, I can kind of understand, but it's really about applying the same principles that you use to make it easier for people to engage with you at the top of the funnel through lead generation and follow up and things like that and applying that through sales and customer service as well. That's really what inbound marketing is as a mechanism to unlock growth. Neil K Carroll: Excellent. So in terms of maybe products or services, if you were to go and tell somebody kind of this is what we do. You would say inbound services consulting or do you
