This week on the Head Shepherd podcast we have Rob Bell, Co founder and CTO at ProAgni and CEO and Principle Consultant at Formula Ag. Which Ferg translates to "knowing a lot about nutrition."On this episode we're focusing on weaning, a process not too far away in parts of Australia. Rob initially started off as an agronomist in the cotton industry but the droughts soon led to a change of career. One thing that really struck him was that regardless of what happened, even in the worst draughts, livestock farmers still had an asset at the end. Whereas in the cropping game if you put a seed in the ground, and it didn't' germinate, you had nothing. So for the past 16 years Rob has been finding his feet as a consultant in the mixed farming game. Rob says it was really a case of taking the lessons learned within the cotton industry and implementing them into a livestock business.Six years ago ProAgni was born after a luck meeting with a ruminant microbiologist in Queensland led to an opportunity of creating something pretty outstanding in terms of antibiotic resistance and removing those challenges from the livestock industry. The past 6 years have been an interesting journey of turning relatively complex science into a commercial reality.Mark and Rob discuss the process of weaning and how it shouldn't be an event, but rather a processRob breaks weaning down into three parts.1. The physical process of weaning- what processes can we put in place to minimise stress on animals and management?2. Pasture management- we reduce 40% of our energy requirements on the farm at weaning which means we can built a feed reserve.3. Economic- what do those three or four extra weeks of growth and grass banking mean at the other end of the business?Rob speaks of the benefits getting young lambs well educated to high quality feed prior to weaning to reduce shock post weaning. Understanding the physical AND mental transitions the lambs are going through means it's less stressful for everyone. The conversation then leads to discussing the ruminants gut biome and how sheep should be thought of as small fermentation chambers rather than grass digesters. This is important to know because when you wean lambs you are changing them from essentially a monogastric to a ruminant. This process requires good management and an understanding of the process internally in a lamb. This podcast is full of more facts and information than you could possibly want on weaning and the biology behind the animals you farm.If you'd like to get in touch with Rob, or find out more about ProAgni https://proagni.com/products/sheep/prowean/robert@formulaag.com.au

Baroness Beeban Kidron is an award-willing filmmaker, a Crossbench Peer in the UK House of Lords and the Founder and Chair of the 5Rights Foundation. In this eye-opening discussion, Beeban vividly describes how the seed for 5Rights was planted while getting up close and personal with teenagers navigating the physical and digital realms ‘In Real Life'. Beeban sounds a resounding alarm about why treating all humans as equal on the internet is regressive. As well as how existing business models have created a perfect societal storm, especially for children.Intertwining the voices of these underserved and underrepresented stakeholders with some shocking facts, Beeban illustrates the true impact of the current digital experiment on young people. In that vein, Kimberly and Beeban examine behaviors we implicitly condone and, in fact, promote in the digital realm that would never pass muster in so-called real life. Speaking to the brilliantly terrifying Twisted Toys campaign, Beeban shows how storytelling can make these critical yet oft sensitive topics accessible. Finally, Beeban speaks about critical breakthroughs such as the Age-Appropriate Design Code, positive action being taken by digital platforms in response and the long road still ahead.A transcript of this episode can be found here. Our next episode features Giselle Mota. Security is big business, but has the role of securing networks and employees bloated to the point that businesses cannot properly protect themselves? Or is the speed of business moving too fast to care? On a roundtable episode with Beth-Anne Bygum, CISO at Acxiom and Anthony McMahon, CIO/CTO and Principle Consultant for Target State Consultants, the two discussed a host of topics, including if technology was moving too quickly for security measures to matter.“We have to move at the speed of the business anymore because the ability to access, purchase, integrate, buy, share, is extremely fluid,” Bygum said. “It means one, we have to constantly press ourselves to be more efficient. Two, we have to constantly ask ourselves: is our defense fabric, the set of tools we use, even keeping pace with the tools my development teams are using?” On this episode of IT Visionaries, our security series continues as Beth-Anne and Anthony take a look at why implementing proper security hygiene practices remains crucial to ensure better overall security. The two also touch on why security officials are having to constantly defend against attackers at the code level and why that problem can be solved by architects designing with security in mind. Enjoy.Main TakeawaysPracticing Good (Security) Hygiene: Until application developers start designing with security in mind, a best practice is to consistently be measuring the health and cleanliness of your current security measures. There are some downsides, like oversecuring and unwanted steps in some processes, but it remains the one of the only ways to properly protect a company and its employees.Feeling the Pressure: With the pace of business moving more quickly than ever, vendors are first to roll out new apps and services without thinking about security. This means that security teams are not able to provide proper risk assessments on these services prior to their installation and that leaves people at risk.Privacy by Design: The only way to avoid employees and businesses from feeling “oversecure” is for vendors to begin designing their applications with security in mind from the beginning and not as an afterthought.IT Visionaries is brought to you by the Salesforce Platform - the #1 cloud platform for digital transformation of every experience. A study in the journal, Applied Health Economics and Health Policy, has found that legalizing cannabis has led to a “marked decline” in the volume of opioids prescribed across Canada. It notes that the findings support the hypothesis that easier access to cannabis for pain may reduce opioid use for both public and private drug plans. George Dranitsaris is a pharmacist by trade, he has a PhD in Health Economics and is Principle Consultant of a research consulting pharmacy group in Toronto called Augmentium Pharma Consulting. He is the lead authors of this study and joined Newsday to discuss the findings.

Guest: Kelley Bollen is a Certified Animal Behavior Consultant with a master’s degree in Animal Behavior who has worked in the field of companion animal behavior for twenty years. She is the Owner and Principle Consultant for Kelley Bollen Consulting, LLC – an animal behavior consulting business. Kelley consults with animal shelters across the country on the design and implementation of comprehensive behavior programs to improve the welfare of the animals, including through Humane Network’s Alive & Thriving animal behavior training program for shelter and clinic staff. Main question: What safe-handling tips for animals should shelter and clinic staff be aware of? Takeaways: * Never open the car door until you are sure the cat is in a carrier. Hold the carrier in both arms to avoid turbulence and to guard against integrity problems with the carrier’s handle or bolts. This is especially important when bringing an animal to and from the car. * When getting a dog out of a car, make sure the dog is leashed before the car door is opened. You can have the owner get the dog out of the car and walk with you to the door (keeping 6’ apart) – especially helpful if the dog is fearful or agitated. To reduce stress you can offer treats, avoid making eye contact with the dog, and turn your body sideways to the dog. * When handling cats: * Gentle or loose restraint is best. Cats are more relaxed if they have four feet on a surface. * Support the cat’s body when lifting them; never carry a cat by the scruff. * If a cat is hard to handle, use a towel. * When handling dogs * If the dog is wiggly, a firm hold is calming to many dogs * Distracting dogs with food such as a spoonful of peanut butter or cat food can make them easier to handle. Fostering an engaged employee experience, namely the interactions with your company from job posting to hiring to adding value to the work they (and you) do … is harder than you think. We all have stories of job seeking, hiring, and working where a company says one thing and does another. Usually such gaffes are unintentional – yet those gaps really impact the bottom line of your company. Tune in and listen to Jess Dewell, executive and founder mentor, talk with Reagan Freed, Principle Consultant at HR, about how our work interactions can add to intentional growth.

Black Hat Briefings, USA 2007 [Video] Presentations from the security conference.
Software companies inevitably produce insecure code. In 2006 alone, CERT has recognized over 8,000 published vulnerabilities in applications. Attackers were previously occupied by the weaker operating systems and have moved on to easier targets: applications. What makes this situation worse, is the weaponization of these exploits and the business drivers behind them. Some organizations struggle to deal with this trend to try to protect their products and customers. Other organizations have nothing in place, and need to create measures as soon as possible. This talk will raise several issues that global enterprise organizations currently face with application security and how to overcome them in a cost-effective manner. Some of the issues that will be discussed are software development lifecycle integration, global policy and compliance issues, necessary developer awareness and automated tools, and accurate metrics collection and tracking to measure the progress. Attendees will be introduced to best practices which have worked for McAfee and other large scale global enterprises, and be shown which practices to avoid. If you're only going to invest in a single activity to start, this talk will help you figure out what it should be, and how to measure its success. David Coffey is the manager of product security at McAfee. At McAfee, David is responsible for assessing the current state of security of the products, development process, and architecture. David is also responsible for leading a geographically distributed team to provide guidance and education to McAfee employees on security measures, process, integration as well as industry best practices. David has been a professional in the technology field for over a decade, providing for strong computer fundamentals and is proficient in both NIX and Windows environments. Prior to joining McAfee, David spent several years working as either an employee or a consultant in financial institutions around the New York area. David later concentrated on architecting, developing and securing multi-tiered, high traffic, dynamic websites, with the largest one doing 92 million hits per day. David served as the sole Application Security Engineer in the 4th largest cable company in the US, performing duties ranging from code audits to architecting IDS deployments to assisting in the securing of network architectures. Most recently, David had the role of Principle Consultant at a security consulting company, managing the security process integration and adoption for a large financial institution which handles a little over 1 quadrillion dollars a year. John Viega is Vice President and Chief Security Architect at McAfee, Inc. In this role he is responsible for McAfee Avert Labs' engineering efforts, including the anti-virus engine. In addition to Viega is also in charge of product security strategy, leading security audits of code, and helping to shape the technical directions for the product lines at McAfee. Viega is a well known security expert and cryptographer and has co-authored several books, including Building Secure Software, Secure Programming Cookbook, Network Security with OpenSSL and The 19 Deadly Sins of Software Security. Prior to joining McAfee, Viega was founder and chief technology officer at Secure Software.
