Lets talk realistic remote work tips for those of you who normally don't telework or supervise those that do. With remote work enjoying an upward trend, there are already a plethora of online tools to facilitate a productive quarantine operation. When remote work advances from perk to necessity it becomes that much more important to establish ground rules for yourself to limit procrastination. Devise a daily routine, keep hours consistent, eliminate any potential distractions and keep communication channels active. The corona-crisis also submits small scale considerations. Before the infection achieves pandemic status, US companies would do well to develop contingency plans for in-office output.Without a clear prognosis, the best organizations can do to protect the health of their employees is to prohibit presenteeism. Sheena is a warrior. Take a look at the Facebook page she created titled, Facing the Fire: My 46 Page Resignation"After almost 20 years in the Fire Service I found myself in a place where I had to speak up against the Brotherhood. I’ve dealt with stressful situations my entire career. This was by far the most stressful time and ultimately lead to the most difficult decision I had to make - leaving a career, a profession, that I loved. Life has an interesting way of keeping something in your life, until you acknowledge it. I was a woman in a male dominated industry - I was not accepting of this for many years. I didn’t want to separate myself. But as a woman in the fire service you are subjected to a world that, still to this day struggles to include and encourage women....my mission is to bring attention where it is needed. To stand up for those who are stuck because they know standing up will have a negative impact on their career. To stand up for women who just want to come to work, do the job, and be included. Essentially I found myself at the messiest fire scene I had ever been at. My initial size up was these guys were jerks. But my full report showed Harassment. Bullying. Retaliation. Discrimination. Alienation. Failed support resources. No accountability. Resignation." Read more here.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/upinflamespodcast)
Get the T ShirtListen to Her BrotherhoodEvery company wants its employees to get along. After all, teamwork is an essential part of a company's success. But sometimes groups of employees form cliques at work. When this happens, it is detrimental to employee morale and can lead to workplace bullying. Cliques cause employees on the outside to feel like they are less important or worthy than those on the inside. And, that’s just bad for business. Here are the top seven reasons why workplace cliques are bad for your company. They Don't Usually Socialize Outside Their Group Excessive togetherness is bad for companies because those on the outside become distracted and dissatisfied with the work environment. They may even expend more energy trying to cope with the clique than they do on their actual job. What’s more, cliques can become more about the group than they are about the company. In the end, this impacts the company’s bottom line. And it causes good employees to flee the company when they have had enough. They Thrive When No One Addresses Their Behavior It is important to address issues with cliques as soon as they occur. When you see something inappropriate, be sure to address it right away. But try not to overreact. While it is important that there be unity among all workers, you want to be careful not to punish employees for having close friends at work. Be sure you know the difference between a clique and a group of friends before you step in and break them up.They Ostracize Other Employees One way to prevent employees from ostracizing others is to assign them to group projects instead of allowing them to choose their own groups. When you allow employees to pick their own groups, you are opening the door to workplace bullying. Conversely, when you select the group, you are ensuring that they include those outside their circle of friends. Pre-selected groups also give employees the opportunity to learn how to work with different types of people.Another way that workplace cliques can affect employee morale is by making a big deal out of the things they do together. For instance, cliques often laugh and share inside jokes that other employees do not get. These secrets create an unbalanced workforce because some employees are left feeling like outsiders instead of part of the team. They Often Have Several Types of Bullies Remember, not all bullies are the same. Some bullies are very covert and manipulative. As a result, this type of bullying is hard to recognize. Be sure you know what constitutes workplace bullying. This will help you identify workplace bullying issues within your company and help you eliminate cliques.Cliques Often Contain Gossip, Backstabbing, and Rumor-Spreading Nothing disrupts the work environment more than office rumor mill. As a result, be sure your employees can identify the perils of gossip and rumor-spreading in the workplace. You also should educate your employees on what constitutes workplace bullying and how they should respond when they witness bullying in the workplace....Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/upinflamespodcast)
Please keep an open mind and understanding heart when you listen to this. It is about much more than sexual assault. There are points in here that all leaders need to consider when someone in the organization finds the courage to speak up. It can be about rape, bullying... or even a basic safety issue. How they are treated afterward can change the trajectory of everyone involved for years to come. Visit AbbyBolt.com for more. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/upinflamespodcast)

The art of communication is not mastered by just knowing what to say and how to say it. A big factor is knowing when to say it. So often people sit back and say nothing when something really needs to be said. It could be an idea, a suggestion, an observation, a criticism...but for some reason they don't want to speak up.They may be afraid of hurting another person, looking mean or foolish, or opening a can of worms that will make a mess in everyone's lives. Sometimes it seems like staying silent is the wiser choice. But here are five reasons why despite the risk, standing up and saying your peace is best.https://www.inc.com/kevin-daum/5-reasons-you-should-speak-up-even-when-you-think-you-shouldnt.html Now go use these skills in your community and do a good thing. Here are some very specific actions to show you how to be fearless.1. Stay open to all possibilities. Let go of outcomes. You may think you want to go right, but life takes you left. So go with what life presents. Left might be more fun anyway.2. Embrace change. Even change that appears negative. Change is constant and is part of the evolution of life and the human experience. Don't fight it. It will happen anyway, so follow it where it leads you.3. Make plans, but make them loosely. Set goals for yourself and work toward them. But remember, you are staying open to possibilities and embracing change. Work toward your goal, but watch for signs to recalibrate.4. Write a mission statement. When you apply your values and vision to every decision of your life, you have a road map that keeps you from veering off in directions that don't support who you really are or want to be. Here's an article on writing a mission statement.5. Find mentors. Look for people whose lives or work you want to emulate. Watch what they do and how they do it. Ask for their help and guidance. 6. Challenge yourself. Find those areas in your life where you feel fear. What is it for you? Look those fears in the eye, and accept a little discomfort so you can reap the great rewards of stepping out of your comfort zone.7. Think big. Why not? Why not make the biggest plans, the boldest actions, the most challenging decisions? You don't know unless you try. You can stay small and safe. Blah, blah, blah. Or you can live an extraordinary life. 8. Create partnerships. People who share a similar vision and world view. Find people in your cluster and make great partnerships. Find someone you trust to work with you on your bold adventures. Broaden your circle of partners so you have a tribe of people working together for mutual benefit. This is broader than networking. It's working together to create a net of influence, inspiration and action.9. Seek support. If there is something you really want, but fear is holding you back, don't go it alone. There are some fears that need deeper unraveling. I can't imagine not being to fly in an airplane or socialize with people, but these are very real fears for some people. Whatever it is, don't give up. Find a counselor or coach to help you. You are in control, not your fears.10. Action, action, action. That is the greatest cure for fear. Decide what you want to achieve, then start doing the work. Focus on the task at hand. Then the next task, then the next. Action is more powerful than great books, great blogs, great motivational speakers, or great plans. Even when you are in a slump or feel afraid, just do something.Tips found at https://liveboldandbloom.com/05/productivity/how-to-be-fearless-in-everything Go to AbbyBolt.com for more information on this and many other controversial subjects surrounding moral courage in the workplace and what it means to Lead with F.I.R.E.Email me at abby@upinflames.org if you have an experience you would like to share or are in need of a resource. "I'm a social entrepreneur who has dedicated my entire adult life into finding better ways of implementing fire prevention education curriculum and campaigns. Over the recent years I have founded the FireED Interactive Community Inc, an impact business that strives to create a positive social change by focusing on eliminating preventable fires worldwide.Since my early teens I found myself in deep contact with fire safety, however, not from school or fire station visits. My experience is rather unique over most others. My introduction to fire safety and awareness programming was through the Smokey Bear Cooperative Forest Fire Prevention Campaign, of which my father supplied educational materials for since 1979. In 1998 I signed as official Canadian licensee for the Sparky the Fire Dog campaign which worked flawlessly, until 2005 when it was not renewed. This setback, instead of immobilizing me, ignited my passion to forge ahead blazing new public education pathways. I took to traveling to meet educators around Canada and the US to try to implement and standardize new approaches to fire and life safety education. For every step I took on this journey, to bring social change to "the fire problem", I diligently applied my entrepreneurial skills and experience to create and market improved programs. No sooner would I find myself slowed down by the impossibility to speed up associations and committees responsible for advancing public education approaches. Nothing was changing, yet people were still getting injured, losing their homes and dying to preventable fires. Peer support is extremely important in every facet of our lives. It goes beyond being a good friend, because sometimes your peers are people you've never met. As I was recording this piece it struck me that I wanted to release it right away without worrying about editing or tagging etc. It is 9/11 and while I didn't even intend it, I think because of that and National Suicide Awareness month, it's best if I post it right away. Today I want to talk about False Allegations, sure I mention EEO but this goes for any style out there. So let's say you opened your email or got a call from an investigator and found out you have been named as one of the accused in an EEO complaint. You read through it and you know for a fact it is false and the person who filed it is a known liar. You have no doubt that it is untrue. What Can Be Done? While it may be difficult not to take an EEO allegation personally, managers should take a step back to consider their reactions in these situations. As seen in the earlier case examples, a negative change of behavior toward an employee after an EEO allegation can be perceived as retaliatory. To prevent retaliation from occurring, managers should take the following actions:Avoid publicly discussing the allegation;Do not share information about the EEO activity with any other managers or subordinates;Be mindful not to isolate the employee;Avoid reactive behavior such as denying the employee information/equipment/benefits provided to others performing similar duties;Do not interfere with the EEO process;Provide clear and accurate information to the EEO staff, EEO Investigator, or Judge; andDo not threaten the employee, witnesses or anyone else involved in the processing of a complaint. The reason I bring up this quick tip is I have been getting recent reports of nasty behavior by highly respected managers. I thought it would be a good time to remind everyone that right, wrong or indifferent there is a process that needs to be followed… even if you know the allegations are false. So challenge yourself and those around you to do the right thing, ditch retaliatory attitudes and embrace the process… no matter how broken it might be. Oh and also if you aren’t sure how to report something reach check out that #notmeapp which is linked in the show notes. It has been turning out to be really handy!Have a tip? Check out this info from Tracy Last -"I'm a social entrepreneur who has dedicated my entire adult life into finding better ways of implementing fire prevention education curriculum and campaigns. This was the spark that motivated me to use all the data I had collected from the great minds of hundreds of fire officers and educators, putting it together to create a sound educational solution for people of all ages to learn how NOT to become victims of fire. This is how FireED Interactive Community Inc was born, a first of its kind public education social enterprise at www.fireedcommunity.com ... see more"Go to AbbyBolt.com for more information on this and many other controversial subjects surrounding moral courage in the workplace and what it means to Lead with F.I.R.E.Email me at abby@upinflames.org if you have an experience you would like to share or are in need of a resource. Welcome back to another Quick Tip Tuesday with Abby Bolt. We're continuing on our lifehack.org theme and talking about how to get along with just about anyone. No matter where you fall on the extrovert introvert scale. Wouldn't it be great to learn better tactics to help you get along with the people you encounter in your daily life? Well, today we're talking about being polite. Quite simply, rude people do not get along with others. They may get along with other rude people, but those results have never been proven. Be careful of others' feelings. Wit and humor at another person's expense may do more damage than you will ever know. A polite demeanor will also leave a deeper positive impact than you immediately realize.Go to AbbyBolt.com for more information on this and many other controversial subjects surrounding moral courage in the workplace and what it means to Lead with F.I.R.E.Email me at abby@upinflames.org if you have an experience you would like to share or are in need of a resource. StokerWhy don't we speak up? Pure and simple, we are afraid. Our fears are a function of our self-preservation. The irony of fear is that it doesn't exist outside ourselves, but is the creation of our own mental musings. I like to remember that fear is really an acronym for Fantasized Experience Appearing Real. Our fears are born of our perception of reality. Whether our fears are based in reality or not is irrelevant because they are real to us. After all, our timidity or our fears give rise to the feelings we experience that serve to reinforce the fears we possess. In the realm of holding difficult conversations, we allow our assessment of what the consequences might be to dictate whether we will speak up or not. In trying to decide whether we will speak up, we project onto others what they will think, feel and do in the future with no evidence — other than the evidence that we make up in the moment. Nevertheless, our thoughts deliver real feelings that drive us to act in certain ways. Once we act, we ground our thinking into a material reality that reinforces what we originally thought. For example, years ago I knew of a junior executive who discovered information that would have been quite damaging to his company. Not wanting to be the bearer of bad news, he chose to say nothing. I can't just walk away and look in my rear view mirror and see what I see, see the people behind me, see the workplace behind me, see the fires behind me and just walk away knowing that that's a bad situation and I'm going to leave it knowing what I know. I can't sleep at night if I do that. It's like walking away from someone beating a child and as long as you can't see it, then it's fine, it's not happening. Transparency is key, there's nothing else that's going to help us out of this. We've got to choose the hard right over easy silence. There've been quite a few recent media pieces about federal workplaces and beyond for that matter. What I'm really finding crazy is that I'm hearing a broken record across the country, not just here in my place, not just in this state, not just in this Western region, across the country. There are so many heartfelt stories out there of folks that have practically gone down in flames and part of me wonders how many people we've actually lost and not realized. People are going down not only professionally but personally as well, because of the troubles that we're having at work. Many of these stories occur in male dominated professions, but it isn't only the females who suffer. Something tBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched!
