Michael Burry is an American investor, hedge fund manager, and physician. Burry is one of the most renowned names in the hedge fund industry, managing over $1 billion in assets. Michael Burry has been in the news recently after regulatory filings revealed that he had PUT options on more than 800,000 shares of Tesla (TSLA). There has also been information released on which stocks he plans to sell, including The Allstate Corporation (ALL), Discovery, Inc. (DISCA), The GEO Group, Inc. (GEO), and Ares Capital Corporation (ARCC). But what can people do with this information? Coattailing is a popular technique in investing. When you use coattail investing strategies on some of the best investors, you're essentially looking and copying the people who we know have made enormous rates of return over 20 and 30 year periods of time. Some examples of these types of investors are Michael Burry, Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett, David Einhorn, and Bruce Berkowitz. So, how can you coattail the best investors? Investors who manage more than $100 million dollars have to file what they bought and what they sold every quarter with the SEC. All you have to do is look it up. It's free information. Find out what investors you want to copy and then go to the SEC website and look at what they are buying and selling every quarter. They have to file every 90 days, so check to make sure the price of the stock is still around what they paid for it. If you like the company, which is critical, apply the Four Ms of investing and make sure it's on sale for an attractive price. In this episode of InvestED, Phil and Danielle discuss Michael Burry's 13F filings and why it's important to do your own research as an investor. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/capsula-de-inversin/message

In episode 257 we welcome our guest, Marc Levine. In today’s episode, we’re approaching investing from the institutional, pension side of things. We talk to Marc about his role at ISBI. When he was there, there were 80 or so hedge funds in the portfolio. He discusses the mood in the boardroom when he made the decision to fire the vast majority of them and index the portfolio instead. We get into his interesting way of thinking of investors in the context of a ‘Tribal’ model, and why he feels investors should honor all 4 tribes. We even get his thoughts on 13F investing. All this and more in episode 257 with Marc Levine.

This week Jason reviews the second quarter 13Fs of the great investors like Warren Buffett, Mohnish Pabrai, Guy Spier, Bill Ackman, and others. Thanks for listening and sharing!13F Cloning - https://afterdinnerinvestor.com/13f-cloning/Follow Jason - https://twitter.com/AfterInvestor
We dive deep into the 13F filings from Q2 to explore what sectors the big firms are investing in, and dive into why ETFs are such a great tax loss harvesting tool.
1. Weekly claims up 1.1. Continuing claims 14.8 million, down 500k from last week. A little weaker than expected. A little bit of set back. Markets taking it in stride. 2. Markets are down except for the Nasdaq. It’s continuing its leadership. Some stocks keep going up, like Apple, reacting to its split. All the big names are higher today. The trend is still up. 3. Gold and silver slammed yesterday. Miners up. Gold futures down a little. Zig-zag down pattern. Lower high and another leg lower. 4. Oil pulling back a little. Pattern looks strong for oil. It’s consolidating and will be heading higher. $34-$35 are the floor. Silver is holding up well. It’s working off an overbought condition. Move should be sustainable. Prospects for both metals going higher are pretty good. We’ll see if we consolidate and go higher. The funadamental picture is there for higher prices. 5. USD close to a bottom. One more minor leg down and then it’s going up. It’s had its sell-off and now it’s heading higher. Will it be be dollar higher, gold higher, it’s been known to happen. Right now many 13F filings are showing heavy gold exposure. Buffett bashed gold throughout his career.
While I don’t pay close attention to the stock market, there are a few rare exceptions that are worth noting. One of them is Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway. Buffet and his partner Charlie Munger don’t invest in the stock market. They buy companies, and happen to trade the shares through the stock market if they’re publicly traded companies. Berkshire Hathaway filed their 13F form with the SEC for the past quarter ended June 30. In that form, they disclose their holdings. From that form you can compare their current holdings with the previous period. It’s an exercise in addition and subtraction to figure out what they did during the quarter. There are a few items that are noteworthy from that report. BH unloaded more than a quarter of its stake in Wells Fargo. They also sold about 61% of its position in JPMorgan Chase, and dumped its entire stakes in Goldman Sachs. They also sold their stake in PNC Financial. Finally, they also exited their holdings in the airline industry including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines United Airlines and Southwest Airlines. It marks a rare moment when BH has lost money on an investment. So that’s what BH is getting out of. What’s interesting is what BH has been buying over the past 90 days. They spent $563 million on a position in Barrick Gold. While the position is only about a 5% stake in the company, there are a few things significant about this. When you are buying a gold mining company, you’re really buying gold at a discount. The process of mining gold only makes sense if the cost of getting the gold out of the ground is substantially less than the cost of buying gold on the open market. The recent run up in gold prices makes this an even better buy. The disclosure is only reporting the purchases up to June 30. Another 6 weeks have passed and it’s likely that they have increased their ownership position since then. Barrick is a well managed company. They don’t take a ton of risk when it comes to exploration. They take a disciplined approach to mining. So Buffet has decided that the airlines are going to take far too long to bounce back to invest in them. The banks and financial services represent a sizeable downside risk as we go through this economic cycle. Gold is a good buy. When you buy anything, the idea is to know what it’s worth when you buy it. For example, I can value an apartment building based on rents, expenses, and market cap rates. The analysis is never perfect, but I can project future cash flows and market-based asset prices, and derive an appropriate value for what an asset is worth. But gold does not intrinsically generate cash flow like a business or rental property, so that analysis doesn’t work. People often try to predict the price of gold by examining certain financial benchmarks. For instance, in theory there are some loose relationships between the gold price and the money supply. But these relationships are far from perfect. There’s another theory that gold prices increase because the dollar is weak. But this relationship is also far from perfect. Finally, there’s a theory that the gold price is correlated with ‘real interest rates’, i.e. the rate of interest after adjusting for inflation. This relationship is also far from perfect; The bottom line is that there’s no magic formula to tell us what the gold price should be. Dollar weakness, real rates, and money supply are all useful indicators. But they’re not predictors. For the most part, the price rises when people lose confidence in the financial system, in their government, in their central bankers, or in each other. And that’s what we’re seeing now. Ignore Warren Buffet at your peril.
By observing what hedge funds are holding in aggregate, one can potentially isolate themes that produce outsized returns. A best ideas strategy involves the creation of an index or basket of stocks based on hedge fund ownership. However, depending on how you approach the ownership data, outcomes vary drastically. To create an effective best ideas strategy, special care must be given to: (1) data integrity, (2) filer identity, and (3) construction mechanism. In this minisode, Aishwarya Damodharan, Shraman Ghosh, and Nathan Innis of Novus discuss the interworkings of the Novus 4C Indices, and how the Novus Conviction Index has fared in the times of Coronavirus. WORKS MENTIONED: 13F Research with Barclays– https://indices.barclays/file.app?action=shared&path=qis/insights/qis-insights-13f-alpha.pdf Consensus vs. Conviction– https://www.novus.com/blog/which-factor-is-truly-a-best-idea Barclays Partnership– https://www.novus.com/barclays-public-data-partnership Conviction Index during the Coronavirus– https://www.novus.com/blog/hedge-fund-best-ideas-during-covid-19 SPECIAL NOTICE: On July 10, 2020, the Securities and Exchange Commission proposed to significantly raise the AUM threshold for funds required to file quarterly 13F disclosures. The new AUM threshold would become $3.5 billion, effectively excluding 90% of current filers. Aside from shrinking the dataset with which best ideas strategies are curated, we anticipate this change would have many negative consequences for the investment community and markets. Read our analysis of the proposal here: https://www.novus.com/blog/dont-mess-with-13fs Please consider adding your voice during the 60-day public feedback period by emailing the SEC at rule-comments@sec.gov with subject line “File Number S7-08-20”; or by submitting a comment on the SEC’s website https://www.sec.gov/rules/proposed.shtml “
My guest today is K.C. Hamann, founder of AQIS LLC. K.C. is a Warren Buffett disciple and spent his first decade in the industry working as an analyst at discretionary, deep value long/short equity hedge funds. Which probably makes him sound like an odd guest for a podcast all about quantitative investing. K.C.’s experiences, however, lead him to identify a number of biases that he believes pollute the stock picking skills of discretionary analysts. And thinking of a hedge fund as a system whose first goal is survival, he believes that these biases are durable. For K.C., 13F filings are prospect theory in action. By modeling both the universal and idiosyncratic biases of a manager, K.C. seeks to better identify cases of true conviction which often do not correspond to position size. And it is in these high conviction ideas that K.C. believes are the best opportunities to generate excess returns. I hope you enjoy my conversation with K.C. Hamann.
Real Vision Senior Editor Ash Bennington hosts Managing Editor Ed Harrison to make sense of a roaring day on Wall Street. They analyze the extreme bullishness in today's session through the lens of Fed Chair Powell's remarks, and discuss yield divergences in European sovereigns, as well as the valuation of European banks. In the intro, Jack Farley takes a look at recent 13F filings. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Sometimes we just have to switch off. Sitting on a plane, bus or car gives us a chance to stop. Despite going 900km an hour, a plane gives me solitude. A plane gives me a reason to stop. I can’t get up and walk around. I can’t go chat to a friend. I’m stuck there in seat 13F in a bubble made of strangers. https://www.stevendipietro.com/blog/2020/4/17/diary-30-is-turbulence-bad-stoic-stoicism --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/steven-di-pietro/message

My guest in this episode is Daniel Grioli. Daniel cut his teeth in the industry at Deutsche Bank in London, where he was responsible for valuing structured equity and hedge fund of fund products targeted at continental Europe. His timing of joining Deutsche, while perhaps somewhat unfortunate for him, proves fortunate for us as he retells a few war stories and lessons learned from the desk leading into 2008. During the crisis, Daniel found himself back in Australia working for a pension fund, where he made a career in manager evaluation, selection, and combination. That makes Daniel somewhat unique among prior podcast guests, as he provides us some insight into the decision making of capital allocators on the other side of the table. The breadth of managers evaluated gave Daniel some unique insights that he shares with us around where he believes the limits of quantitative and discretionary management lie. He also shares his framework for manager selection, which he calls Via Negativa. Presently, Daniel is leveraging this experience to build what he calls a “best ideas” portfolio, exploiting 13F reporting data to create a high conviction equity portf olio for his clients. Finally, we talk about the i3 podcast that Daniel hosts and some of the most interesting guests he has interviewed. Without further ado, my conversation with Daniel Grioli.

In this week's Five Good Questions, we're interviewing Kenneth Jeffrey Marshall about his book Good Stocks Cheap. Kenneth Jeffrey Marshall teaches value investing at the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden, and at Stanford University. He also teaches asset management at UC Berkeley. A longtime value investor, he wrote the book Good Stocks Cheap: Value Investing with Confidence for a Lifetime of Stock Market Outperformance. He holds a BA in Economics from UCLA; and an MBA from Harvard. Five Good Questions: 1. Can you walk us through how you built your investing model? I especially liked your ideas that organize efforts around “Know what to do,” “Do it,” and “Don’t do anything else.” 2. Your book demonstrates a clear understanding of accounting. Has the rise of intangibles changed how you use and interpret financial statements? 3. There have been some great studies and white papers on reversion to the mean on returns on invested capital. Do those influence your evaluation of strategic assessment? Are we ever going to see profit margins mean revert again? 4. One of the biases you identify is called “miscontrast.” Can you explain what that is? Do you consider yourself an absolute or relative value investor? (It feels like a lot of the 13F ideas I’ve kicked the tires on the last few years during an expensive market suffer from this biases.) 5. What are the ancillary, non-monetary benefits you’ve found to being an investor? My top online research tools, and why I use them…The rebalancing of GE & their recent dividend cut… My favorite funds & names to follow… a quick 13F analysis in real-time Questions & Comments: “What are some of your favorite places to research stocks and find new ideas?” • Paul [00:57] “Hey Frank, you may finally be right about GE. There’s “blood in the streets” and nobody, ANYwhere, will say a single good thing about the company.” • Matt [16:15] “Frank, you always talk about 13F’s and how they’re a great source to find stocks. But this information is dated - showing only positions fund managers purchased over the past 3 months. They may not even be in these stocks anymore. Maybe it’s NOT a good idea to follow these fund managers. Thoughts?” • Chad [26:49] As always, thanks to everyone who participated! . You never know, your question may be the one I read on the next podcast! Good Investing, Frank Curzio
Episode 70 is a radio show format. We start with a quick catch-up, discussing the recent eclipse and Meb’s upcoming travel, including Iceland, Reno, Orlando, Amsterdam, among others. Before jumping into listener questions, we get Meb’s thoughts on Episode 69, which featured Jason Calacanis (Meb dabbles with some angel investments himself). Meb tells us a bit more about his own angel experiences and his reflections on interviewing Jason. This dovetails into a question about how Meb allocates his own money between private investments, public investments, debt, and so on (with a “capital allocation” comparison to Thorndike’s book, The Outsiders). You’ll hear Meb’s thoughts on his personal asset allocation. This segues into our first set of questions from listeners, focusing on where to put “safe” money right now. Meb gives us his thoughts, leading into a discussion of which asset could be right for listeners wanting to keep some money on the sidelines, yet without inflation taking too big a chunk of it. What follows is an assortment of questions and rabbit holes: If Meb had to short just one market right now what would it be and why… How an individual investor should look at leverage in a portfolio (includes a recap of risk parity)… Who is Meb’s favorite 13F guru… What hedge fund replication strategies Meb finds most interesting… And even a cryptocurrency challenge to listeners from Meb. What is it? Find out in Episode 70.

Wall Street Unplugged - Your Best Source for Finance, Investing & Economics
Welcome back to another episode of Wall Street Unplugged! To begin the show, and before my guest signs on... I share one of the most underutilized tools in the world of financial research and analysis. They’re called 13F's. Every quarter, all hedge funds and institutional investment managers with over $100 million in qualifying assets are required to report something called a SEC 13F filing. Simply put, these 13F reports disclose what the largest investors in the world are buying and dumping… allowing regular people like you and me to see exactly where the "smart money" is moving. This is the easiest way investors can trade with famous traders like George Soros, Warren Buffett, or John Paulson. And they are publicly available every quarter… in full detail. Breaking down these reports can lead to the market's most interesting trends. And, with nothing to hide, this is where I find a lot of my new investment ideas. Today I share a few examples… Then for this week’s interview, I’m joined by John Petrides – Managing Director and Portfolio Manager at Point View Wealth Management. John is a Wall Street Unplugged regular. From retail and telecom… to infrastructure, healthcare, and financial sectors... Every time John joins the show, he covers it all. And today he starts with earnings season... Thus far, just over 85% of the S&P 500 companies have reported earnings. And about 66% have exceeded analyst expectations. Today, however, we take a closer look at the more important metrics… Earnings growth has reached a 3-year high. And with forward expectations getting dangerously high, John raises all the right questions. We also talk about today's most hated industry… Out of all sectors this earnings season, none performed as poor as retail. Stores like JC Penney, Macy's, and Target have all been crushed this past holiday season. And although shopping trends continue to point online, John and I both agree that the end is nowhere near for department stores. Tune in to hear who we think will survive… To end the interview, John prepares investors for upcoming rate hikes. The fed fund rates are currently sitting at 1.25%. But due to “hawkish” changes coming soon, John expects rates to reach as high as 3% in only 2 years from now. More importantly, John shares with listeners his two favorite sectors going forward in today’s deregulatory environment. And also shares with us 4 international stocks that he considers “buys” today. Then, for my Educational Segment, I cover the fastest growing industry in the world. It has ties with every sector on the planet. However, because it’s still early, this highly talked about sector is a minefield. Join me as I break down the numbers… and show listeners exactly how they can stay one-step ahead of this enormous yet dicey industry.
Joshua Brooks, medically retired from the United States Army as First Sergeant Brooks joins the A Desire to Inspire with Manny Patrick show to discuss life at war and then, life after. A proud father of five; Trystan, Madison, Daniella, Christian, and Joshua Junior, josh now makes his home in the beautiful jungle of Costa Rica. In February 2000, he left for basic training. Then he joined the United States Army as a 13F, Forward Observer. He talks about his job going anywhere on the front line, where infantry goes or beyond into or behind enemy lines and call for air support or artillery. Josh quickly made the rank of E-8, First Sergeant, in just ten years. This means he was selected by the Department of Army, part of Congress, two times for excellent service and dedication to duty. As he tells me, normally, soldiers don’t make this rank until closer to twenty years. To make this rank in just ten years put Josh in the very top one percent of performers. On top of this, Josh deployed for a total of over three years to combat. Iraq 2002-2003, 2006-2007, and 2009-2010. He served in units such as the 1-23 Tomahawk Stryker Brigade, 1stSpecial Forces, and the Henry Lind Leadership Academy. His awards and decorations include;1 Bronze Star Medal, 1 Meritorious Service Medal, 5 Army Commendation Medals, 6 Army Achievement Medals, 1 Air Force Achievement Medal, Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Accommodation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, 4 Non-commissioned Officer Development Medal, Combat Action Badge, The Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Long Range Reconnaissance Identifier Badge,Marksmanship Qualification Badge Expert with Carbine. Josh talks about how proud he is of the time served in the Military and very grateful to have served amongst the humble heroes who made his time in the service so enjoyable. Then Josh talks about what he learned and experienced during this time and how it will forever be a part of what motivates him to continue to grow and be a better man. The brotherhood within the Army, of those whom you deploy to war with, is unexplainable and unforgettable, he says. Josh has found the deepest fulfillment in the success and happiness of his children. Growing up without a father has motivated him to be the best father within his personal abilities. Although, he don’t currently live with some of his children, he puts forth his greatest efforts to maintain a strong relationship with them and to be the foundation they need in their lives. He talks about how he also learned through time away, that it is never the quantity of time you spend with someone but it is the consistency of how you spend time, and the quality of time, you spend with them that will forever touch their hearts and minds. Nothing makes Josh smile the same as seeing the smiles of all five children. A proud father of them all for their will to succeed, excellent grades in school, and most of all their loving and respectful personalities. To the next step in the journey. In This Episode You Will Learn About: -Why Josh joined the military - What life was like on the war grounds - What was going on in his brain during war - What bothered Josh upon his return home from war - How Josh dealed with life post war - What has affected Josh the most from being at war - How many people were lost under Josh's leadership - What you are not trained for at war - Why Josh decides to live in the jungles of Costa Rica - What different types of therapy there are in the military - Why Josh felt stuck after life at war AND MUCH MORE!!
Stock picking is hard—really hard. Fortunately, there’s a simple strategy you could begin following today to improve your success. It’s simple to implement, takes just minutes of your time, yet has the potential to vastly improve your investing results. Sadly, if you’re like the average investor, you don’t even know it exists. So what is it? Well, consider the world’s star hedge fund managers – the Buffetts, Klarmans, and Teppers – the guys with average yearly returns in the upper teens and twenties. What if you knew what they were investing in right this second? Logic would suggest if you invested alongside them, you too could post their extraordinary returns. Well, it turns out, the option is available to you thanks to the SEC and Form 13F. This is a form professional fund managers with more than $100m in U.S.-listed assets must fill out. Best of all, it’s available to the public, providing you and me a way to “peek over the shoulder” of some of the world’s most successful investors. Of course, there are some issues with this strategy. For instance, there’s a 45-delay in reporting, there can be inexact holdings, and the biggest one – the fluctuating success of your chosen manager. Bill Ackman’s recent debacle with Valeant certainly comes to mind. No, it’s not easy; a 13F investing strategy takes dedication. Many of the star managers who post amazing long-term returns can actually underperform for years at a time. Would you stay invested alongside them long enough to ride out those barren stretches? Or would fear and second-guessing shake you out? Turns out there are a few ways you can improve your chance of success. Find out what they are in Episode 13.

It seems like a basket composed of each gurus’ highest conviction pick would be a smart strategy. Yet you found their top pick was the worst performer of their top 10! How is that possible? And what can we do to benefit from that information? If I believed in following a copycat 13F strategy, how would I go about doing that in an intelligent, systematic manner? Only 25% of stocks are responsible for all of the market’s gains. What implication does this have for stock picking vs. indexing? As ETFs proliferate and various strategies become available, do you think people will still pay 2% and 20% for these kind of strategies when you could have all of them for a fraction of the expense? I know this doesn’t fit your investing style, but if you had to pick one of these managers to invest 100% of your net worth, who would it be and why? You have to factor in age and length of potential service to you.
Tiingo Investing: How to Create a Better Investment and Retirement Portfolio
In this episode we cover not only what hedge funds are, but one of the most recently used hedge fund allocation strategies: risk parity. The largest quantitative hedge funds are using this method and it is now presenting some real dangers. We use this example to touch upon how we can skeptically look at performance and also what to beware of with 13F filings. This episode synthesizes everything we've learned into a single practical episode.
