We didn't get into the events of 2013 that shaped his life. We instead focused on his "why", and the lessons he has learned from a lifetime of never quitting. In this week's Team Never Quit Podcast, Marcus has 11-year combat veteran and Bronze Star and Purple Heart recipient, Benjamin Sledge in the studio. Benjamin served in Iraq and Afghanistan, earning 2 Army Commendation Medals. He lost his best friend in combat. These days, Benjamin is a viral writer, graphic designer, and author of Where Cowards Go to Die where he reveals a brutal portrait of war and the cost of returning to a country that no longer feels like home. He travels around the country educating businesses, non-profits, and churches about veterans' mental health issues. In this episode you will hear: I got to see the best and worst parts of war. Often times we were the first ones in the door, so we either made friends or got shot. I was 21 when I first got to the battle, thinking “I literally have no idea what I'm doing.” There's a very distinct smell to death. It's like rotting meat dabbed with knockoff CK1 cologne. Many combat veterans don't necessarily come home with PTSD; it's moral injury. It's the physiological damage that occurs when you violate your sense of right and wrong. Seeing death from that close does something to the mind. It became a real struggle point for me. When I first got home, they didn't know how to handle me, because I didn't know how to handle myself. I was drinking myself silly, so I could get the images out of my head. The strangest thing happened to me – I found myself missing war.  My wife left me while I was in Iraq. War really is a spiritual experience. What does it look like to live a courageous life and carry that into career and family relationships – Never give up, never accept defeat, and never leave a fallen comrade behind. Inside every man, there's both a warrior and a poet. In May of 2009, 3rd Squadron 61st Cavalry Regiment deployed to Nuristan, Afghanistan a small eastern province bordering Pakistan. When they arrived, they occupied the most fringe outposts of Regional Command East, several of which were only accessible by helicopter, and then only during the cover of the darkest nights of each month, in order to avoid rocket propelled grenade attacks against the airframe.   The squadron commander for the deployment was then-lieutenant Robert “Brad” Brown. In preparation for that deployment, he, along with then-Colonel Randy George, went on the pre-deployment site survey to better understand the terrain and complex environment of which they were only months away from assuming responsibility. During that trip, they arrived at Combat Outpost Keating, a remote outpost named for Ben Keating, who had died attempting to drive one of the lumbering resupply vehicles down the treacherous road back to the forward operating base. Standing in that base built in a valley at the base of three mountains and backed up to two rivers, both men understood that there could be no delay in closing that base for the safety of their Troopers. Anyone who visited COP Keating knew full well that it was the tactically indefensible position in which you could ever place yourself.   But that wasn't the only conundrum. COP Keating wasn't alone. In order to close it, you would have to close the other two outposts in the surrounding area, almost simultaneously to ensure that they could provide reinforcing fires for one another. Concurrently, south of the forward operating base, one the observation posts that LTC Brown would be assuming responsibility for had recently been completely overrun by the Taliban, who attacked up a mountain as the Afghan National Army abandoned their post, forcing the remaining US Troopers to call for a broken arrow, requesting fire on their position as they were being overrun. And to complicate all of that, the going-in position of relieving the outgoing unit would have them arrayed across a vast swath of land, terribly difficult to resupply, with barely enough Troopers to simply pull security on their own position.   For multiple reasons they were unable to close COP Keating, OP Fritsche, and COP Lowell as quickly as they needed to. Unknown to the base closure planners of 3-61CAV, as they were simultaneously planning to close the three outposts in Kamdesh, the Taliban was planning a massive complex attack to prevent them from ever leaving.   On the morning of October 3rd, 2009 more than 400 insurgents attacked OP Fritsche and COP Keating simultaneously. A force of only 52 Troopers defended COP Keating, even after Afghan National Army abandoned their post and the insurgents broke through the perimeter, causing a small group of Troopers, led by Staff Sergeant Clint Romesha, to engage the enemy in close-quarters combat, retaking the COP. However, at the end of the day, the Troopers of Black Knight troop, 3rd squadron 61st cavalry regiment would be saying their final goodbyes to eight of their friends who had given their lives during that battle.   The diligent devotion of their squadron commander, however, ensured that this moment would not be easily erased from history. LTC Brown and his staff worked to guarantee the recognition of the heroic efforts of those who went above and beyond to place themselves in harm's way to protect each other, destroy the enemy, and bring the remains of their friends home. Those efforts to ensure recognition succeeded.   What has since become known as the “Battle of Kamdesh,” resulted in the following awards:   Two Medals of Honor for SSG Clint Romesha and SSG Ty Carter Two Distinguished Service Crosses for 1LT Andrew Bundermann and SSG Justin Gellagos (posthumously awarded) Nine Silver Stars 18 bronze stars with “V” device for valor 37 Army Commendation Medals with “V” device for valor And 27 Purple hearts for wounds sustained in combat   SSG Romesha authored the book “Red Platoon” and Jake Tapper authored “The Outpost,” which has since been turned into a major motion picture.   The fall-out of the battle, including the loss of life, took it's toll on everyone involved and amongst others within the squadron, however. The subsequent investigation held both COL George and LTC Brown responsible, even though the ISAF-commander at the time, GEN Stanley McChrystal, agreed there was nothing more they could have tactically done to prevent the disaster. Many of the Troopers completed their obligation and left the army, preferring lives of quiet and peace, away from the constant reminder of the toughest day of their life.   LTC Brown however, still had eight months left to command his squadron through a deployment in one of the most kinetic provinces in all of Afghanistan. The two artillery guns on his forward operating base fired over 6000 rounds total during their year-long deployment. He had lost two beloved Troopers before Keating, while sending back home dozens of wounded Troopers before and after the Battle for Kamdesh. To put it in context, in the first four months of his deployment, LTC Brown's squadron of rag-tag cavalrymen were attacked more than 238 times across seven separate locations. And yet, he persevered with courage, humility, devotion, and determination. It is why those of us who served with him as the commander of 3rd squadron 61st cavalry regiment unabashedly and unquestionably remember him, to this day, as the best leader we ever served with. As his former chaplain, I can guarantee that he's the real deal and I am humbled to know him. So without further ado, here is the one and only, Brad Brown.

If you're Davis Bellavia, you lead your team into action. David single-handedly saved his entire squad, risking his own life to allow his fellow soldiers to break contact and reorganize when trapped by overwhelming insurgent fire. He then voluntarily entered and cleared an insurgent strong point, killing four and seriously wounding another. His actions stand as a testament to those who put everything on the line as they do the grim work required to keep each other safe and alive on the battlefield. David Bellavia is the only living recipient of the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Second Battle of Fallujah, Iraq. Bellavia has also received the Bronze Star Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals and the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross.   In this episode you will hear: We not only have to live for ourselves and our families, but we have to remind people who our lost soldiers are, because they didn't drop dead of a heart attack, or were killed by some misfortune or bad luck; they voluntarily chose to stand up when the bullets were coming and they voluntarily said “I'll do this for you”. You're not a man until you acknowledge that you don't have a father. Peer pressure makes you smoke cigarettes when you're 11. Peer pressure ca also make you charge a machine gun nest at Normandy beach. It all depends who your peers are. When the voices in your head say quit, don't. You really can't appreciate life until you've gone through combat. There's no education like the United States military. Never bring a hairdryer to basic training. You can't mourn on the battlefield. In the case of fallen soldiers, we should exchange the word “memorialize” for the word “celebrate”. America is still the shining city on the hill.

In January 2018 there were 37,878 veterans experiencing homelessness. More than 22 veterans die by suicide DAILY! This is a crisis! Our government spends an astronomical amount of money on defense. Yet, not even close to that amount for helping those that risk their lives for this country. It’s a research proven fact that you are likely to end up with mental health issues if you are in the military. It should be mandatory that help is given. Read “On Killing” by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman. It’s eye opening. My guest has lived it. SGT David Jordan is the co founder of We Got Your Six Mr. David Jordan, co-founder of the WGY6 organization and a proud 12-year Veteran with the National Guard. David has amassed an excess of 20 years of combined management experience that spans over his military and civilian careers. With more than 25 years of customer service in a variety of industries, David is well versed in communication and presentation to small and large audiences that include peers, leaders and citizens alike. Mr. Jordan gained business and accounting skills during his time overseeing housekeeping and laundry staff of multi-bed nursing home facility. In this role he was accountable for following and applying strict budgetary guidelines to include every aspect of the business from scheduling through inventory supplies and costing. On December 22, 2009, the "STRIKE" Brigade received orders to spearhead the new surge of forces into the southern region of Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The 2nd Brigade Combat Team (BCT), 101st Airborne Division, Air Assault - Combined Task Force (CTF) STRIKE deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) X-XI from 10 May 2010 to 30 May 2011, as the main effort brigade of the President's "surge" force in Afghanistan. CTF STRIKE conducted a comprehensive counterinsurgency strategy in Arghandab, Zharay, Maiwand, and Panjwai'i Districts, Kandahar Province, to defeat the insurgency and improve the security situation in the "militant birthplace of the Taliban." CTF STRIKE simultaneously developed and enabled the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) and district governance to assume control in the region. During the year-long deployment in Southern Afghanistan, STRIKE defeated the Taliban in these critical districts and established over 29 combined Coalition and ANSF bases in Taliban contested areas. Combined Task Force STRIKE extended governance into previously inaccessible areas establishing district administration, health and educational services, and providing the people of Kandahar Province a voice in their government. During the deployment, Combined Task Force STRIKE effectively reduced violence along major civilian supply routes by attacking the insurgency deep in historic enemy-held terrain. STRIKE's use of persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance platforms prevented the reemergence of the Taliban in the critical terrain. The actions of CTF STRIKE resulted in the significant reduction of Taliban influence where hostile activity the area of operations dropped significantly and allowed for greater engagement of the population by ANSF and local government leaders. Success in Kandahar Province provided the Afghan people the choice to support the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the opportunity for peace and prosperity in the future.   CTF STRIKE's deployment in Afghanistan saw the award of a Distinguished Service Cross, 5 Silver Stars, 38 Bronze Star Medals with Valor, 111 Army Commendation Medals with Valor, and 491 Purple Hearts. CTF STRIKE executed more than 7 major operations during which 65 STRIKE Soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice. In recognition of their efforts under extreme combat situations, the STRIKE Brigade Combat Team was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation (PUC) for OPERATION DRAGON STRIKE and operations in Kandahar, as well as a Valorous Unit Award for the deployment. 1st Battalion, 502d Infantry Battalion, Combined Task Force TALON, received the Valorous Unit Award for their actions to remove hardened Taliban fighters and supporters in eastern Zharay District from September to November 2010. A proud father of five; Trystan, Madison, Daniella, Christian, and Joshua Junior, josh now makes his home in the beautiful jungle of Costa Rica. In February 2000, he left for basic training. Then he joined the United States Army as a 13F, Forward Observer. He talks about his job going anywhere on the front line, where infantry goes or beyond into or behind enemy lines and call for air support or artillery. Josh quickly made the rank of E-8, First Sergeant, in just ten years. This means he was selected by the Department of Army, part of Congress, two times for excellent service and dedication to duty. As he tells me, normally, soldiers don’t make this rank until closer to twenty years. To make this rank in just ten years put Josh in the very top one percent of performers. On top of this, Josh deployed for a total of over three years to combat. Iraq 2002-2003, 2006-2007, and 2009-2010. He served in units such as the 1-23 Tomahawk Stryker Brigade, 1stSpecial Forces, and the Henry Lind Leadership Academy. Josh talks about how proud he is of the time served in the Military and very grateful to have served amongst the humble heroes who made his time in the service so enjoyable. Then Josh talks about what he learned and experienced during this time and how it will forever be a part of what motivates him to continue to grow and be a better man. The brotherhood within the Army, of those whom you deploy to war with, is unexplainable and unforgettable, he says. Josh has found the deepest fulfillment in the success and happiness of his children. Growing up without a father has motivated him to be the best father within his personal abilities. Although, he don’t currently live with some of his children, he puts forth his greatest efforts to maintain a strong relationship with them and to be the foundation they need in their lives. He talks about how he also learned through time away, that it is never the quantity of time you spend with someone but it is the consistency of how you spend time, and the quality of time, you spend with them that will forever touch their hearts and minds. Nothing makes Josh smile the same as seeing the smiles of all five children. A proud father of them all for their will to succeed, excellent grades in school, and most of all their loving and respectful personalities. To the next step in the journey.       In This Episode You Will Learn About:     -Why Josh joined the military   - What life was like on the war grounds - What was going on in his brain during war - What bothered Josh upon his return home from war - How Josh dealed with life post war - What has affected Josh the most from being at war - How many people were lost under Josh's leadership - What you are not trained for at war - Why Josh decides to live in the jungles of Costa Rica - What different types of therapy there are in the military - Why Josh felt stuck after life at war AND MUCH MORE!!

All the Rabbis have been wrong for 2,000 years. The Math of Christ uses the fundamental tenets of science to prove conclusively that Jesus Christ fulfilled the prophecies about the coming Messiah for all people. Predictions written centuries before the birth of Christ describe how man can identify the only valid offer of salvation and eternal life for all mankind. True Christians already possess sufficient faith in Christ as the Messiah. This book is written for those technical people and children whose faith may be challenged by science taught in public schools. The Math of Christ will show you how the odds of forty prophecies about the Messiah could not possibly have happened by accident, but rather had to have been the result of a purposeful design. The Father of Mathematical Probability, Dr. Emil Borel confirms that these events were no grand coincidence. Readers will also discover how many other prophecies in the Bible have already come true, how the Bible is full of science knowledge revealed centuries before man actually discovered these facts, how the Earth was made specifically for man to live in and how life would be impossible if very minor changes were made in its existence. Every Christian will want to read The Math of Christ to strengthen their own faith. They will also want a copy for every person they have tried to witness to and reach. Author and lecturer, Colonel Stephen M.
