The clock in the tower at Tampa's Hillsborough High School was dedicated in 1949. Students of the classes of 1946 through '48 raised thousands of dollars to build the clock in honor of those alumni who died in combat in World War Two.The clock stopped keeping time and chiming the hours several years ago. But it's being rededicated Saturday (2/24) after an alumni fundraising campaign. We speak with Darlene Fabelo, a HHS graduate who led the drive.

Och allting tycks nu förändrat i skuggan av Förintelsen och Bomben. Ställt under stark existentiell vånda, tvivel och tvekan.Vad är en människa? undrar författaren Primo Levi. Att skriva poesi efter Auschwitz är barbari, säger den tyske filosofen Theodor Adorno 1949.Den 3 november samma år, 1949, kommer också nyheten i Ekot. ”I år utdelas inget Nobelpris i litteratur. Och motiveringen är i all korthet den att ingen av årets kandidater har kunnat samla den absoluta majoritet som enligt stadgarna fordras för att priset ska utdelas.” Och kanske kan man se Svenska Akademiens historiska beslut 1949 som ett slags avgörande ögonblick. Att man inte längre kan vara lika säker på att man har överblick. En symbolisk och faktisk kontrollförlust.Men fortfarande tycks Akademien mest se vita västerländska män. Till exempel den amerikanske författaren William Faulkner – som till slut blir den som får 1949 års Nobelpris, ett år i efterskott.Och ännu är det långt till en varaktig förändring av värdeskalor och hierarkier. SOMMERPAUSE! Der Kinoshita-Podcast macht Ferien und schnuppert etwas salzige Meeresbrise. Wir sind am 25. September wieder mit einer neuen Folge da.Nachdem wir Keisuke Kinoshitas zweiteilige Verfilmung des Kabuki-Theaterstücks Yotsuya Kaidan gesehen hatten, haben wir uns zu seinem Exkurs entschieden und zum Vergleich Nobuo Nakagawas Version THE GHOST STORY OF YOTSUYA aus dem Jahr 1959 angeschaut. Hier wird der ehemalige Samurai Iemon von Shigeru Amachi gespielt, seine Frau Oiwa von Katsuko Wakasugi. Zehn Jahre nach Kinoshitas Film geht Nakagawa einen anderen Weg, der schon viel näher am Horror und Gore ist, den wir aus den vergangenen 40 Jahren kennen. In Japan ist die Geschichte durch ein Kabuki-Theaterstück bekannt - die gruselige Geistergeschichte des verarmten Iemon (Ken Uehara), der vom Samurai zum Ronin abgestiegen ist. Seine Frau Oiwa (Kinuyo Tanaka) liebt ihn, aber sie ist ihm nur im Weg, als sich eine reiche junge Frau in Iemon verliebt. In einem Streit wird Oiwa grausam verstümmelt, Haare, Gesicht und Auge entstellt, sie leidet furchtbare Schmerzen, bis sie schließlich ermordet wird. Iemon heiratet nun in die reiche Familie ein, aber Oiwa lässt ihn nicht los ...Kinoshita übernimmt in seinem Film die zweiteilige Struktur des Theaterstücks. Im Podcast reden Sandra, Michael und Thomas über den ersten Film, über die Ästhetik der nichtmenschlichen Körperbewegungen und die Bedeutung der Haare. Beides findet sich wieder in J-Horrorfilmen der vergangenen dreißig Jahre. Was zu Beginn wie eine leichte Komödie wirkt, wird im Laufe der Handlung immer vielschichtiger: Sozialkritik und eine Analyse der Klassenunterschiede transportiert diese romantische Komödie ebenso wie eine Geschichte von Verlust und dem Mut, eigene und gesellschaftliche Hürden zu überspringen. Ein einfacher Mechaniker, der mit Fleiß und Einfallsreichtum zum erfolgreichen Unternehmer geworden ist (gespielt von Shuji Sano), soll mit der Tochter (Setsuko Hara) aus bedeutendem, aber mittlerweile verarmten Haus verkuppelt werden. Keisuke Kinoshita findet einen wunderbaren Weg die Annäherung des Paares unter anderem beim Boxkampf und beim Ballett zu zeigen. Im Podcast sprechen wir über geküsste Handschuhe und dünkelhafte Bemerkungen über den Cadillac, den man einmal hatte, über Klassenunterschiede, Slapstick und die Ehrlichkeit einer betrunkenen Wirtin und schweifen immer wieder ab. Fazit: Ein stark unterschätzter Film, der ebenso großartig wie unterhaltsam ist.HERE'S TO THE YOUNG LADY (Ojōsan kanpai!) aus dem Jahr 1949 ist der elfte Film von Keisuke Kinoshita. Emmanuel Laurentin consacrait en 1998 deux émissions de "L'Histoire en direct" à la loi du 16 juillet 1949 destinée à réglementer les bandes dessinées pour la jeunesse. Le premier volet donnait la parole à plusieurs acteurs de la B.D dont Forest, Morris et Uderzo.Le 16 juillet 1949, l'Assemblée Nationale vote une loi destinée à réglementer les publications pour la jeunesse. Les cibles privilégiées de la loi sont deux groupes de presse, Opera Mundi dirigé par Paul Winkler, et les Editions Mondiales de Cino del Duca , principaux importateurs de bandes dessinées américaines.  * Il s'agit pour les promoteurs du texte de condamner les bandes dessinées trop violentes ou contenant des allusions sexuelles trop évidentes. La loi trouve ses racines avant la guerre lorsque les mouvements de jeunesse et d'éducation populaire s'attaquent à la vulgarité et à la bêtise du Journal de Mickey, de _Tarzan_et de Mandrake. Ces critiques sont reprises avec vigueur dès 1945 à la fois par les catholiques et les communistes propriétaires les uns et les autres de deux grands groupes de presse enfantine, Vaillant et Coeurs Vaillants.  Si les catholiques cherchent avant tout à protéger la jeunesse de la violence et à défendre une certaine morale, les communistes ajoutent à ces valeurs un anti-américanisme de circonstance. La guerre froide vient de commencer. Dans quel climat fut institué cette loi et la commission de contrôle qui en est issue ? S'agissait-il de censure ou de prévention ? Comment s'est passée l'alliance entre catholiques et communistes sur ce texte ? Emmanuel Laurentin consacrait en 1998 une émission à la loi du 16 juillet 1949 destinée à réglementer les bandes dessinées pour la jeunesse sous la forme d'un montage d'entretiens avec René Finkelstein, fondateur du groupe Fleurus, Eudes de la Poterie, spécialiste de la presse de jeunesse, Raymond Labois, membre de la première commission, Philippe Farine, député MRP, Jean-Claude Forest, créateur de Barbarella, Raoul Dubois, du mouvement des Frankas, Charles Ronsac, éditeur, Raymond Poivet, créateur des Pionniers de l'espérance, ainsi qu'Uderzo, père d'Astérix et Morris, père de Lucky Luke.
