The Power & Privilege Dynamics of MicroaggressionsIn this episode, herdacious host Lorelei chats with Alejandra Mielke about the role power and privilege play in the ability to micro-aggress against others. Microaggressions are everyday verbal, behavioral, or environmental snubs that demean, diminish, or harm members of marginalized groups through belittlement. “Your English is great,” or, “As a woman, I know what you go through as a racial minority,” might not appear harmful, but Alejandra enlightens us as to why such comments incur feelings of invalidation. As a DEI coach who works with underrepresented minorities to overcome workplace biases, Alejandra teaches us that microaggressions are born out of inherent power and privilege differences, which often creates a suppressive atmosphere for marginalized individuals. However, Alejandra assures us that derogatory comments and behaviors can be avoided when those in power become self-aware, and those on the receiving end respond suitably to their own needs. From accepting feedback to acknowledging that experiences are not one-and-the-same, Alejandra underscores that microaggressions can be halted through better awareness. As Alejandra best explains, power is infinite; and empowered people empower people!Host: Lorelei GonzalezCo-host: Alejandra Mielke, PhD Dr. Alejandra Rodríguez Mielke is a Leadership Coach & Consultant with more than 20 years' experience in the field of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. On our latest podcast, we dissect the episodes of Coronation Street shown in the UK between the 23rd and the 27th November (Episodes #10169 - 10174). Leanne may not have been willing to admit it, but the inevitable events of Friday's heart-breaking episodes have been on the cards for quite some time now, but that certainly didn't make them any less enjoyable to watch - indeed, the sad scenes where Steve and Leanne said their final goodbyes to their son were among the actors' very best, and, supported by spectacular performances from the rest of the cast, made for a truly powerful end to the week. Also this week, it looks like it could be the end of the road for Johnny and Jenny (Nooo!), villainous Ray and Geoff strike a deal (Boo!) and things are still tough between Peter and Carla (Meh..) In the Kabin, we celebrate Corrie's wins at the Inside Soap Awards and cast a critical eye on the newly unveiled pieces of artwork to mark the 60th anniversary, then we round off the podcast with more of your listener feedback. Matt catches up the feedback from listeners. This episode was originally the 52nd episode (some episodes have been LOST along the way), and was released on March 29th of 2010. Find all of the back episodes released (so far) at https://ktlrelisten.blogspot.com/mp3
On our latest podcast, we chat about the episodes of Coronation Street broadcast in the UK between the 18th and the 22nd May (Episodes #10,063 - 10,065). It was a pretty heavy week this week, with the dominating stories being Oliver's diagnosis of mitochondrial disease and Ed standing up to racist Bistro manager Don. Though the message in the latter story was hammered home a little too heavily at times, we thought, both stories contained some fantastic performances from the main cast, and we're hoping that this could be a bit of a turning point for the Baileys, especially Ed. Thank goodness for the lighter side of the week provided by Evelyn and Arthur's blossoming romance, though - now can we please not rush towards some kind of tragic end for Arthur, and let the two of them enjoy a bit of happiness together? With not much news to cover this week, we decided not to have a Kabin segment, but rather skip straight to the feedback section after Street Talk, where we read out some of your early reactions to Friday's episode and discuss the employment status of Special Constable Tinker. On the latest podcast, we chat about the episodes of Coronation Street broadcast in the UK between the 4th and the 8th May (Episodes #10,057 - 10,059). After last Friday's shocking cliffhanger where she was driven to attack Geoff with a wine bottle, Yasmeen has to face a grilling from Weatherfield's most tenacious police officer, DS Abney. Did you act in self-defence? Was Geoff still holding the knife when you hit him? What do you think of my amazing fringe? It's a tough week for Yasmeen - thanks goodness she has Imran to back her up! Also this week, Weatherfield hosts yet another bizarre award ceremony, whose recipients appear just as randomly picked as the kids they get to do the speeches, and, for some reason, Leanne is concerned when Oliver comes back messy from messy play. Next up on the podcast we take a look through this week's Corrie news in The Kabin, including a couple of quotes from Ian Macleod's press interview - filtered for spoilers, of course! - and we finish off the show with some of your reactions to the latest Geoff and Yasmeen developments in the feedback section.
