The Healing Chicago co-founders Tristan Lewis and Andrew Smith join Zerlina on the show for Mental Health Week!In the wake of the 2020 global pandemic, Black and Brown men across the country were processing this international event through a unique lens. The beginning of the year was marked by grieving the loss of sports legend and icon Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna. Several weeks later, our day to day normalcy came to an immediate halt with a mandatory quarantine across the nation. As we were stuck indoors, stripped of many of our social and professional routines, we witnessed the killings of Ahmaud Aubrey, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd and the resulting global awakening to systemic racism directed towards Black Americans.Andrew Smith and Tristan Lewis noticed the effects of these events on their peers and wanted to do something. The action resulted in creating a space for Black and Brown men in Chicago to work through the traumas of 2020 and beyond while exploring traumas that might be hindering their personal growth and development. Fueled by an undeniable moment in history, The Healing was born. What started as a weekly session for yoga and fellowship that has evolved into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and community of men who are striving for personal greatness to impact their communities.

{5 minutes with Mike is sponsored by This episode of 5 minutes is Mike it's sponsored by 'li'l boy. A dramatically different short story that speaks to the heart strings of young people and adults in today's America it is available now for pre-order on amazon.com written by Michael D Beckford. Ahmaud Aubrey was a victim of racial profiling Is there brother I'm at Aubrey was killed cold-blooded in Brunswick Georgia trying to defend himself. These white vigilantes killed him in the process of what they calling a quote unquote citizens arrest. His brother did not commit a crime at the very least he trespassed on a property that wasn't even fully constructed yet which as we all know trespassing is a minor offense he's not commit a burglary that was no violent crime involved and this should have never ever have happened to this young man. Gone too soon as his life because of the actions of these Three goons. 2. This was a KKK style killing When I first saw this video last year which I could not really complete the whole thing to this day these videos really make me emotionally charged so I really try to stay away from him but when I watched enough to know what happened and see what's going on it surely reminded me of the days of you know the KKK The mask to vigilantes for white power and white supremacy went around killing black people for position for power and to completely terrorize black neighborhoods. So when I watch this video I realized that this was a KKK style killing of another unarmed black man. . 3. The police and the da should also be up for charges for falsifying information It wasn't until certain video was released in regards to this killing that we started to find that the police and the da is complicit in the murder of Vermont Aubrey they try to rub it off and say oh yeah just a burglary and other black kid doing this during that and someone was protecting their quote unquote property which you know in America property is a contentious thing because we as blacks were once considered the very thing for which they feel they have to outright defend by force but as we all know especially those who claim to be Christian property you can get back you can rebuild but we'll never be able to get back and rebuild on Aubrey's life and a da and the police should be also prosecuted it's in the best of the law in regards to them being complicit and it's deadly act by these white vigilantes. and with the da and police help these murderous vigilantes could have gotten away with it. Where is Sleepy Joe? Unfortunately it seems that sleepy Joe has been pretty mute and regards to this particular case I'm assuming he doesn't want to sway the courts but where is sleepy Joe I don't know. Let's Take Em To Church This world needs a reset since the pandemic has been a strong tense atmosphere of racism and prejudice in America, anti-black, anti-asian and anti everyone else. We are filled with sorrow and rage.In the last year, violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders has surged 149% according to a recent article in Time. It is sickening and heartbreaking. The most recent attack gaining national attention happened last week in Atlanta on March 16th,  (the murder of 8 people) 6 of whom were Asian women in what has still yet to be classified as a hate crime. There has been a long history of anti-Asian rhetoric and action in our country -- the Chinese Exclusion Act and Japanese Internment, are just two of the large government-sponsored acts against Asians. This last year's spike in anti-Asian hatred feels so closely linked to Trump's racist remarks around the COVID-19 global pandemic, which he repeatedly referred to as the "China Virus," thus putting blame on an entire people group and inciting fear, xenophobia and hatred against people of Asian heritage. As we have seen all year, COVID has ripped back the veil of a post-racial America showing racism is alive and active. The increase in anti-Asian violence was already in full swing in March of 2020 when Danielle Castillejo sat down with the Allender Center's Wendell Moss and Seattle area high school teacher and coach Dan Taylor for the Arise Podcast. This conversation, now over a year old, continues to feel relevant today in terms of recognizing that we are still seeing racial trauma lived out as a collective experience. And it is not just a "black and white" issue. While there has been countless accounts of police brutality against Blacks and African Americans; in the last year the horror of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, the White Supremacy on display in the murder of Ahmaud Aubrey, and so many other hate crimes against Blacks, they aren't the only group who have been targeted. Asian Americans have been verbally assaulted, their businesses vandalized, the voices silenced and their lives threatened and ultimately taken. In contrast to the proceeding administration, President Biden openly condemned anti-Asian violence, ordered all flags to be flown at half-mast in honor of those lives lost, and along with Vice President Harris visited Atlanta in support of the Asian community. These actions say, "We see you. We hear you. And we will not idly stand by." They set an example for us; we too cannot remain silent and watch hate, racism and white supremacy snuff out lives. Sometimes it feels like we can't possibly do enough with a problem this far spread and this deeply entrenched and yet as Wendell Moss said, "Don't underestimate what one person can do."Here's a few things you can do to stand against anti-Asian Violence:1. Don't look away. Pay attention to what is happening around you and in our nation. Spend some time and get educated on the experiences of Asian Americans. A great place to start would be PBS's 5 Part Documentary "Asian Americans." Find out the specific history in your town, your state by connecting to your local library, historical society or museums.2. "If you see something, say something." Report anti-Asian violence to your local authorities and to organizations like Stop Anti-Asian and Pacific Islander Hate. Commit to not remaining silent while racist jokes and memes are said or shared: Speak up and speak out.3. Donate your time and your money. To help the families and communities that have been impacted by the March 16th shooting, the Atlanta's branch of the Asian American Advancing Justice Organization set up a fund which you can give to that goes directly to those families. You can also support your local Asian owned and operated businesses by frequenting their establishments and sharing them on social media.Join us in standing against anti-Asian violence. Stop Asian Hate.Originally from a blog post published 3.19.2021https://www.maggiehemphill.com/post/standing-against-anti-asian-violence

Oneness Restored Episode Four: How Long, Lord? Habakkuk 1:1-4, Amos 5, Micah 6:6-8 Guests: Lionel & Charic Jellins   Episode Summary:    When we look out at our world, it is evident that things are not the way God intended. There is an ever growing list of black and brown bodies that fall at the hand of the state and private citizens. Breonna Taylor. Ahmaud Aubrey. Elijah McClain. George Floyd. To name a few. The violence is abhorrent to the way of Jesus Christ. It has gone on for centuries, and our brothers and sisters are tired. They cry, “How Long, Lord?”   Scripture calls us to mourn with those who mourn. As our fellow image bearers experience pain and trauma from racial injustice, how should we be proximate to their pain? Scripture teaches us to spend time crying out to the Lord. And scripture also shows us that God also cries out to us. God speaks to us, showing us that he requires us to Do justice, Love mercy, and Walk humbly with Him.    Descriptions and Definitions:   Lament – a passionate expression of grief or sorrow.  –To express regret or disappointment over something considered unsatisfactory, unreasonable, or   unfair. –To cry out to God expressing disappointment, grief, or sorrow over sin or injustice.   Justice  – Right actions which bring about shalom, wholeness, and flourishing.  – Actions that lead to the destruction of evil and the flourishing of the cosmos, Andy Crouch

This past week has been difficult for many of us as the African American community continues to bear the pain and unfairness of our "Justice" system.  A lot has happened this year from Ahmaud Aubrey, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and the many other names that get silenced.  It shows you the value of black life. How about not getting the job you are well qualified for because of your hair texture!  We are in the year 2020 and we are still fighting for a voice in a county that was built on the backs of our Ancestors. In this episode, I share my thoughts and feelings on the social and economical injustice we face on a daily basis.  I also share how we (especially the black woman) must support, praise, and validate each other because we are the most under-protected but yet the most powerful influencer on the planet.  This episode is in no order, just me expressing my thoughts and feelings.   There are challenges over what are called “race issues” that our society faces every day.  Recurrently there are stories in the media that bring the issue front and center.  Breonna Taylor killed in her bed.  Ahmaud Aubrey killed while he was out jogging.  Tamar Rice, a 12-year-old shot while playing in the park.  And, of course, George Floyd pinned to the ground by several uniformed police officers until he died.  In reaction to things like this there have recently been widespread protests.  And related to this there have been violently destructive and deadly riots across the country.  What’s a biblical Christian to do and think?
