In this episode of the show, Raj and Stu discuss India v Pakistan at the Asia Cup, the Black Caps' T20 squad to take on Australia, NZ A's tour to South Africa and the start of Australia A's tour to India. We start the show once again by talking about another dominant Indian performance against Pakistan in the Asia Cup - this time in the Super 4 stage. Last week it was two brilliant allrounders - Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel - who made important contributions for India, but this time the spark came from Shivam Dube, who slowed Pakistan's momentum after a rather sloppy start to the match. There's also more praise for Abhishek Sharma, as well as discussion around the controversial catch by Sanju Samson. Next it's a Black Caps focus - first the T20 squad named to take on Australia in the Chappell-Hadlee series, in which Mitchell Santner, Lockie Ferguson, Kane Williamson and a host of other key names are unavailable for the Kiwi side. We discuss how the NZ T20 side might take shape over the course of the home summer, with an eye to the ICC T20 World Cup in February. Is it a good thing that we can't name the Black Caps' best XI? Or a concern that so many roles feel up for grabs this close to a major event? To round out the show, first we give a big tick to NZ A's overall tour to South Africa. Things started slow with the white ball, and the final Test ended in a fairly subdued draw, but the likes of Rhys Mariu, Dale Phillips, Curtis Heaphy, Adi Ashok and Matt Fisher all made cases for higher honours over the years to come. We also quickly touch on Australia A's tour to India, in which we saw bat dominate ball in the first Test of that series, with Sam Konstas, Dhruv Jurel & Devdutt Padikkal among those to impress. We'll be back in your feed again next week to discuss more stories from the world of cricket, including the Asia Cup & more from New Zealand. In this episode of the show, Jamie and Stu discuss India v Pakistan at the Asia Cup, the white-ball series between South Africa & England, NZ A's tour to South Africa and the NZC casual contracts that leave the Black Caps with some tough decisions in the build up to the T20 World Cup. We start the show by talking about India's dominant performance against Pakistan in the Asia Cup group stage. We talk about India's depth and the balance that their two brilliant allrounders - Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel - provide, as well as the impressive contributions of the likes of Kuldeep Yadav, Abhishek Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav. Saim Ayub's bowling was a bright spot for Pakistan in what was otherwise a tough day at the office for Mike Hesson's side. Next we move to the final stages of the English home summer to discuss a damp end to the white-ball series against South Africa, which saw a return to form for England's batters in between the rain. After scores of 400 in an ODI then 300 in a T20, it wasn't hard to hand out praise, with Phil Salt and Jacob Bethell in particular our topics of conversation. We also look back at a full international summer from Jofra Archer and try to make sense of a very full domestic calendar. We round out the show with a Black Caps focus - first a NZ A performance against South Africa which put the likes of Rhys Mariu, Dale Phillips, Curtis Heaphy, Adi Ashok and Matt Fisher in the spotlight, before running through NZ Cricket's decision to hand out five casual contracts to Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, Lockie Ferguson, Devon Conway and Kane Williamson. Does Kane's inclusion mean we might see him at the T20 World Cup? And did you realise the NZ home international summer is only two weeks away? Finally, we mention Gary Stead's new gig in the Ranji Trophy, and shout out Leicestershire for gaining promotion in the County Championship. We'll be back in your feed again next week to discuss more stories from the world of cricket, including the Asia Cup & more from England and New Zealand - maybe even some Australia A v India A content. The two icons of Indian cricket are back in the news. After India fought hard to draw the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, there's calm after the storm with no international assignments scheduled for the men's team until the Asia Cup in September. However, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have once again been dragged into the headlines. Reports are circulating that the two players might retire after the ODIs in Australia this October. But why? Kohli and Rohit are still among India's best one-day batters, and both have expressed their desire to play in the 2027 World Cup. Why are we forcing a transition when there's no need for it? Meanwhile, Shubman Gill is reportedly set to be named vice-captain for the Asia Cup T20Is. While Gill is undoubtedly India's next big cricket superstar, does he deserve a spot in the T20Is? Will India disturb the well-established opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill? In the latest episode of the Sledging Room Podcast, Akshay Ramesh, Alan John, and Saurabh Kumar discuss the chatter around some big selection calls that are expected soon. In this episode of the show, Baldy, Jamie and Stu look back at week 3 of IPL 2025 through a stock market lens. Who are we buying? Who are we selling? And what are we watching with our fingers poised ready to pounce in the coming weeks? We start this week with an injury update - and it's not been good news both on the field for the Kiwis Lockie Ferguson and Glenn Phillips, and in the podcast studio, with almost all of us suffering from one ailment or another. Once things do turn positive, it's the Gujarat Titans who are first to receive praise - in particular Sai Sudharsan and the consistency he's shown throughout the tournament so far. We also talk about Punjab's Indian core and the golden duck to century turnaround for Priyansh Arya. Dr Jamie takes us through the mindset needed to succeed across a long tournament like the IPL, in which you're bound to fail along the way - perhaps more often than you do succeed. Next we talk about the Sunrisers Hyderabad after Abhishek Sharma's outrageous 141, which saw them chase down almost 250 and maybe kick-start their turnaround. Is it time to load up on SRH stock? Or are there still worrying signs? Things get dark when discussion turns to CSK - the intent has disappeared, no one is scoring runs and not even MS Dhoni cameos can really get the crowd excited any more. Can they turn it around? Or is it already time to sell all our stock despite it reaching an all-time low? To round out the show, we detour briefly to talk about Harry Brook's appointment as England captain, we talk Digvesh Rathi's celebrations, Vipraj Nigam establishing DC's spin trio & Nicholas Pooran's six-hitting prowess as LSG continue to impress. We expect to be back in your feed later in the week with more IPL coverage. In which, we go back to the era when MS had Do Knees, and wonder if Umar Gul's Bowl-out inspired Digvesh Rathi, who signs off autographs for Travis Head to distribute to eager fans in supermarkets, and for Abhishek Sharma to flaunt after hitting match-winning 100s. In which Shreyas Iyer inspires order to the proceedings, and in which KL Rahul and Krunal Pandya follow in the illustrious footsteps of Anil Kumble, in two entirely different contexts. If nothing in the above paragraph made sense, don't panic - CSK's season is making even lesser sense.
On our next team preview we cover the play-off contenders from last year's Indian Premier League. Starting with RCB who feature the legend Virat Kohli in a new look side for the 2025 IPL. Will this finally be the year for Royal Challengers Bengaluru? Rajasthan Royals are next. They made some big changes but retained Samason and Jaiswal, who are more than a match for anyone on their day. Sunrisers Hyderabad were one of the funnest teams to watch in last year's IPL and it looks like the smashing will continue. They have only added to a team which featured Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma and Heinrich Klaasen already. And Kolkata Knight Riders, last years winners, will go again. They went big in the auction for Venky Iyer, will that pay off with another trophy for Dre Russ, Narine and the lads. www.pitch-mag.co.uk/ - use code Pitch+CricketPod15 for 15% off your first order Links to podcast audio: https://linktr.ee/thecricketpod Our website: thecricketpod.com Support the podcast: patreon.com/thecricketpod Buy merchandise: https://seriouscricket.co.uk/teamwear/stores/the-cricket-podcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thecricketpod Buy coffee: https://cricketcoffeeco.com/products/the-cricket-podcast-coffee Twitter and Instagram: @thecricketpod Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode of the show, Binksy, Jamie, Baldy and Stu kick off the IPL 2025 coverage by previewing the fortunes of the Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings. We start with a Baldy explainer, and a quick chat about the impact of the mega auction, before moving straight into the team previews. We discuss what excites us about our chosen teams, whether that's particular players or team storylines, and whether they'll be in title contention come the business end of the tournament. First up is KKR, in which Binksy asks why they aren't favourites with the betting agencies, highlights the importance of Andre Russell and Sunil Narine again, as well as the talented Indian bowling core featuring the likes of Varun Chakravarthy, Harshit Rana and Vaibhav Arora. There's also a word on Ajinkya Rahane taking over as captain. Next is Sunrisers Hyderabad, in which Stu gets excited about songs, Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, the power-packed batting lineup and bowling reinforcements, before asking whether this team can go one better in 2025. For the Rajasthan Royals, the absence of Jos Buttler is the question on our minds. Without him and others, they look weaker and the betting agencies have written them off. But can Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal and co. make those odds look silly when the winners medals are handed out at the end of May? The Mumbai Indians are up fourth, and Baldy proceeds with caution when discussing their favouritism with the bookmakers. Will the star-studded batting lineup featuring Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya and friends deliver in 2025? Or will the absence of Jasprit Bumrah - for how long? - be too difficult to overcome with the ball in hand? To round out part one of our preview, Jamie takes a look at CSK, highlighting the plethora of options their allrounder-packed squad provides them. What role will Rachin Ravindra play? Will MS Dhoni continue his six-hitting exploits? And when the team does settle on a best XI, will it be strong enough to take them to the final? We'll be back in your feed again at the end of the week with the second episode of our IPL 2025 Preview. India's T20I side is looking formidable after a dominant 4-1 series win over England at home, continuing their impressive run in the shortest format of the game. Under Suryakumar Yadav's captaincy, India have established a settled line-up in T20Is. Young talents are excelling, while senior players are embracing greater responsibility. The template set by Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid prior to the T20 World Cup triumph has been maintained, with a few lovely updates. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have stood out as openers, showcasing fearless cricket at the top of the order. They have been brilliantly backed by captain Suryakumar and coach Gautam Gambhir. Tilak Varma has also cemented his place in the XI with consistent performances. Barring the established trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Kuldeep Yadav, questions arise about whether there is room for other star players to return without disrupting the current balance of the T20I side. Leading up to the 2024 T20 World Cup, the Rahul Dravid-led management reintroduced Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja. While the trio delivered strong performances, their return impacted team continuity and limited opportunities for emerging players. Can Gautam Gambhir resist the temptation to reintegrate superstars? What will happen when Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant become available for T20Is? Will they be considered, and how will their inclusion affect the current dynamics? In the latest episode of the Sledging Room Podcast, we also delve into the build-up to the Champions Trophy, as India and England prepare for a three-match ODI series starting on 6 February. Tune in! Andrew McKenna is joined by the former England fast bowler Alex Tudor and the former IPL batter Abhishek Jhunjhunwala to look back at the 5th T20 between India and England in Mumbai, as India seal a 4-1 series win with an emphatic 150-run victory in Mumbai. They discuss a majestic century from Abhishek Sharma, as his 135 helped India post 247-9, they discuss more batting woes from England, as they were bowled out for just 97 inside 11 overs, and they hear from both Jos Buttler and Suryakumar Yadav. In this episode of the Top Order Podcast, Binksy, Jamie, Baldy and Stu discuss some of the major talking points from the past week, including the England v India T20 series, Australia's dominance of the WAshes, whether there should be NZ teams in the BBL and a look ahead to Australia's Test tour to Sri Lanka. We open the show by discussing the first two T20s between England and India, mainly from an England point of view aside from a SRH fan club shout out for Abhishek Sharma. We talk about closers, Jos Buttler's role and England's reliance on Adil Rashid. From there we move to the Women's Ashes, which have been one-way traffic so far as Australia continue their dominant run that looks to be extending for yet another year on the international stage. Staying in Australia, we also talk about recent discussions in New Zealand about getting some Kiwi sides into the BBL. Would this be good for the competition? For NZ Cricket? For anyone? To round out the show, we look ahead to Australia's upcoming Test tour to Sri Lanka. With injury concerns on both sides and World Test Championship final spots basically secured, how much does this series actually matter? We talk about whether Australia will shuffle the likes of Travis Head and Usman Khawaja, the role Scott Boland could play in Sri Lankan conditions, what we might see from newcomers like Sam Konstas, Beau Webster and Cooper Connolly and Sri Lanka making the most of the Galle fortress. At least 33 people died in heatwave during the 2024 General Election's last phase in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha. The people who died include polling officials. The average heat related mortality has increased by 85% in 2013-22 as compared with 1991-2001. Excess heat can cause: Cardiac related illness Lung damage Kidney injury Adverse pregnancy outcome Mental health impact But often these deaths are not recorded as heat-related deaths or are not accepted by the respective governments or local bodies. The National Action Plan on Heat Related Illnesses, 2021 gave detailed guidelines on how to record a suspected heat-related illness death. Recently, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare released a document examining autopsy findings of those who died of heat-related illnesses. This is an attempt by the govt to standardise the approach of confirming such deaths. We are replaying last year's episode. In this episode of the show, Binksy and Stu look back at the final week of the IPL 2024 regular season before previewing the upcoming knockout fixtures. Recorded on 20 May, we talk about a week that saw Royal Challengers Bengaluru storm into the playoffs, Sunrisers Hyderabad snatch second place, Kolkata Knight Riders watch some rain fall, Rajasthan Royals extend their losing streak and missed opportunities for Lucknow Super Giants and the Chennai Super Kings. We discuss the epic match between RCB and CSK, which essentially became a quarterfinal thanks to LSG's slip up earlier in the week, and then take a closer look at all four playoff teams as we move to the business end of the season. KKR have been superb all season, but will Phil Salt's absence and consecutive washouts leave them vulnerable? The Sunrisers Hyderabad bowling attack has improved throughout the season, but are their chances tied heavily to the success of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head at the top of the order? With the Rajasthan Royals in a slump and Jos Buttler gone - is Ravichandran Ashwin at 5 really the answer? Virat Kohli's form has been immense all season for RCB, but have they become an all-round threat during this six-game win streak? Plus predictions and much more! We might be back again later in the week with more news and views if there's an incredible game we can't wait to talk about, but if not we'll be in your feed again about this time next week to wrap up the final and also look ahead to the T20 World Cup. We are halfway through the IPL 2024 season. While the playoffs race is heating up, the focus is also on the T20 World Cup squad selection, which is set to be done before May 1. Yes, many young names have performed wonderfully well, but will the selectors make bold calls and reward them? Should an aggressive and in-form batter like Abhishek Sharma, who has been one of the pillars of SRH's batting brutality, be picked for the T20 World Cup, starting June 1? Then, there is Riyan Parag, who has revived his IPL career with the Rajasthan side. Should India look at grooming young pacers like Harshit Rana and Mayank Yadav for the World Cup? Is that a risk worth taking? Handing debuts to youngsters in an ICC event puts undue pressure on them. Isn't it? At the same time, it's worth mentioning that India, under MS Dhoni's captaincy, won the T20 World Cup in 2007 with fresh faces. There are some other important questions, too. Will Ravindra Jadeja, who is struggling for form with both ball and bat, find a place in the 15? Isn't Axar Patel a better option? What about opening the innings with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma? Sanju Samson or Rishabh Pant? KL Rahul in? Shivam Dube as spin-hitter? In this episode of the Sledging Room Podcast, Akshay Ramesh, Alan John and Kingshuk Kusari discuss the potential T20 World Cup picks. Tune in! Produced and Sound Mix By: Kapil Dev Singh

On our midweek 2024 IPL reaction we discuss three games, featuring: Sunrisers Hyderabad v Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans v Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings v Royal Challengers Bangalore. The main story is Sunrisers Hyderabad who, led by Klaasen, Head and Abhishek Sharma blitzed their way to the IPL record score of 275. Mumbai Indians were caught in the headlights as their bowlers were punished by the Sunrisers who were in amazing form. Earlier in the week Chennai Super Kings overcame the Titans with ease, as MS Dhoni took a great catch along the way. And Royal Challengers Bangalore won their first match of the year as they jumped all over mistakes from the Punjab Kings. #ai #rlhf #llm ReST uses a bootsrap-like method to produce its own extended dataset and trains on ever higher-quality subsets of it to improve its own reward. The method allows for re-using the same generated data multiple times and thus has an efficiency advantage with respect to Online RL techniques like PPO. Paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/2308.08998 Abstract: Reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) can improve the quality of large language model's (LLM) outputs by aligning them with human preferences. We propose a simple algorithm for aligning LLMs with human preferences inspired by growing batch reinforcement learning (RL), which we call Reinforced Self-Training (ReST). Given an initial LLM policy, ReST produces a dataset by generating samples from the policy, which are then used to improve the LLM policy using offline RL algorithms. ReST is more efficient than typical online RLHF methods because the training dataset is produced offline, which allows data reuse. While ReST is a general approach applicable to all generative learning settings, we focus on its application to machine translation. Our results show that ReST can substantially improve translation quality, as measured by automated metrics and human evaluation on machine translation benchmarks in a compute and sample-efficient manner. Guest Abhishek Sharma Panelists Eriol Fox Richard Littauer Perrie Ojemeh Memo Esparza Show Notes Hello and welcome to Sustain Open Source Design! The podcast where we talk about sustaining open source with design. Learn how we, as designers, interface with open source in a sustainable way, how we integrate into different communities, and how we as coders, work with other designers. Our special guest today is Abhishek Sharma, who is the head of a design company called ColoredCow. He is currently managing one of the open source projects called Glific, which is a WhatsApp based open source communication platform for NGOs to have conversations with their community. Abhishek shares his journey of self-discovery when he realized he really enjoyed design and problem solving, and not engineering. He tells us about his role as Community Manager at Glific, and how listening to the communities is very important for designers who want to make meaningful, impactful products. We learn about what he wants to do in the future for the open source space with designers and he shares some “best practices” for designers to be able to collaborate with NGOs more. Go ahead and download this episode now to find out more! [00:01:55] Abhishek tells us what he does and his role at ColoredCow and Glific [00:03:43] With Abhishek taking on so many different job titles and job positions, Eriol wonders how Abhishek manages his time and makes sure he's doing each of the roles well, and does he see other designers in open source doing this as well. [00:07:08] We find out how Abhishek's started to engage in creative projects and the path leading to where he is today. [00:10:37] How does Abhishek engage the kinds of people that Glific is most useful for? [00:14:52] Perrie asks Abhishek based on him working on the community engagement part if he thinks getting people together and then giving them space to learn, if that will increase the adoption of products. [00:16:54] Memo wonders how Abhishek interacts with this open source culture in his organization with design. [00:18:36] How does Abhishek view himself as a Designer as well as a Community Manager? [00:20:13] Eriol shares their thoughts on what Richard and Abhishek were talking about with the role of the Community Manager and listening to communities. [00:23:09] Abhishek shares how he wants to engage designers in the open source space in the future. Also, he talks about how a lot of designers want to know everything before they start producing something. [00:29:56] We learn from Abhishek what the “best practices” are that designers have to learn to be able to collaborate with NGOs more. [00:32:24] Find out where you follow Abhishek on the internet. Quotes [00:07:41] “And I did a quick self-discovery where I wanted, I drew some Venn diagrams, figured out, okay, this is what I'm good at.” [00:08:37] “I was really not good at it at the beginning, I was just full of ambition that: okay, this is what I wanted to do.” [00:10:48] “I have started seeing my role as equating product management to actually being this community facilitator, and engagement creator for lack of a better word.” [00:11:48] “It's not really the tech or the solution, it's really about the problem that the NGOs are solving, so it kind of gives them a space or the topic that there is a need with.” [00:12:27] “We are actively building a support channel and community space where these NGOs can interact with each other, with their team, development team, design team, support team, and with each other so they can learn from each other.” [00:18:47] “The thing that happens as a Community Manager role is it keeps increasing your empathy towards the users, towards the space, because as a designer, what I need to do is solve problems.” [00:19:42] “I feel this role of being a Community Manager and listening to the communities is very important for all designers out there who want to make meaningful impactful products.” [00:21:33] “I if you're not telling the right story of the product, then also you lose a lot of the impact of the product.” [00:26:29] “What ends up happening is when you create you first learn, but when you learn you're not creating.” [00:26:43] “It's like a math problem: you can't solve a problem just by reading math, you have to actually solve those problems.” Spotlight [00:33:56] Memo's spotlight is a resource repository model called Nice Very Nice. [00:34:35] Perrie's spotlight is a new open source initiative called Open Source Stories. [00:35:21] Richard's spotlight is Tiny Cat, the online catalog for tiny libraries. [00:35:51] Eriol's spotlight is a project made by the Federation of Humanitarian Technologists and the tool called Coalesce.
