This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain. It's the 4th of June and here are today's headlines. With the NDA poised to form the government for a third consecutive time, bagging at least 290 seats, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it a “historic feat”. As the INDIA bloc managed to halt the BJP's march towards majority, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi came out to hit out at the BJP, saying that the mandate today was a clear indication that the people of the country do not want to PM Modi and Amit Shah to run the country. The Opposition INDIA bloc has reversed all exit poll predictions, leading in at least 228 seats, according to the latest numbers. However, despite a stiff contest, the BJP-led NDA is inching closer towards the 300-mark, standing at 297 at the moment. In what is probably the biggest upset state-wise, the tug-of-war for Odisha between BJP and BJD ended today with the Bharatiya Janata Party set to form the next government. Though the ruling BJD party hels various rallies and election campaigns, the saffron party has crossed the majority mark of 74. Odisha CHief Minister Naveen Patnaik served for five consecutive terms, but now the lotus party will form its first cabinet in the coastal state. In a major setback for the BJP, Union minister Smriti Irani lost to the Congress's K L Sharma in Amethi, as Congress wrest back power. The Amethi win comes as a big boost to the Congress, with Rahul Gandhi losing the seat to Irani in 2019. In neighbouring Rae Bareli, a Congress party bastion for decades, Rahul defeated BJP candidate Dinesh Pratap Singh, who apologised to the people of Rae Bareli.Behind the remarkable turnaround for the Opposition Samajwadi Party and Congress in Uttar Pradesh where the INDIA bloc was leading, some fascinating factors may have given them an upper hand over the BJP. One of the factors that may have worked in favour of the SP, is its ticket-distribution strategy. Unlike previous elections, the SP ticket distribution focused on non-Yadav OBCs. Also, the SP changed candidates in several constituencies, depending on feedback from local cadre and local caste equation. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and its allies, the JanaSena Party (JSP) of Pawan Kalyan and BJP, are headed for a landslide in Andhra Pradesh, in what is a complete reversal of the 2019 results. This is quite a turnaround for the TDP-led alliance, which was almost written off months before the elections after its chief N Chandrababu Naidu's arrest. Jagan seemed to have lost focus on governance issues in trying to implement his nine welfare schemes, which he had promised during his padyatra ahead of the 2019 polls. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.

Conversely, critics like K. Kavitha from BRS condemned the remarks as ignorant. In this episode of Workwise, we covered this discussion with  Kalpana Sachdeva and Souniya Khurana. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Punjab turned into quite a fiasco with his convoy being stranded on a highway and the PM being forced to cancel his plans and public addresses in the state. What followed was a full-blown political slugfest between the BJP-led Centre and the Congress-led Punjab government. Shortly after the episode, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a statement accusing the Charanjit Singh Channi government of a lapse in the PM's security. Seeking a detailed report on the matter, Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted, "Such dereliction of security procedure in the Prime Minister's visit is totally unacceptable and accountability will be fixed." Other BJP leaders like Smriti Irani also went onto claim that there were "murderous intentions" behind such an oversight. Former Punjab CM and Congress leader Amarinder Singh, who is now a BJP ally, went a step ahead and asked CM Channi to quit. While the Punjab government has constituted a high-level committee to investigate into the lapses around the visit, CM Channi, on his part, has denied any breach. Rejecting the allegations that PM Modi's life was in danger, he said, "Narendra Modi is our PM. I would lay down my life to protect him, as a Punjabi." But how did this visit take such a wild turn? How did PM Modi end up being stranded on a flyover? Who is to blame for the security lapses? And the most important question, given that Punjab is headed to the state elections: is there a political gameplay here? We'll dive into all these questions and the timeline of the events that led to this fiasco. Host and Producer: Shorbori Purkayastha Guests: Aditya Menon, The Quint's political editor. Greater Hyderabad is going for civic polls on 1 December and the BJP is leaving no stone unturned to gain some ground. From deploying political heavyweights like Union Ministers Amit Shah, Smriti Irani, UP CM Yogi Adityanath to raising the communal rhetoric — the party seems to be fighting this election tooth and nail. While the BJP has promised to free Hyderabad from the "Nawab Nizam culture" and rechristen the state to "Bhagyanagar", Chief Minister KCR is feeling the heat of this high-octane campaign in his own turf and has been compelled to give it as much importance as the BJP is giving. In his rallies, KCR urged people to not get influenced by what he describes as "outsider politicians" and “to save Hyderabad from divisive forces”. But why is the BJP stressing so much on the municipal elections — what is the game plan here? And what it at stake for the TRS? The fact that retailers are spotlighting sustainable brands is adding fuel to a small but emerging segment of the market. As brands scramble to find ways to distinguish themselves in an intensely competitive market, the prospect of additional promotion from major retailers could provide a significant push towards more sustainable practices.“It’s an emerging demand, and I feel that all these retailers and many more anticipate it because it will arise very quickly over the next few years. It's also not the first time retailers have flirted with sustainable commitments. It was an active conversation in the late 2000s that got derailed by the recession, but things have moved on since then, with climate change becoming a much more pressing social and political topic. Initiatives linked to sustainability also offer potential new revenue streams. For instance, launch of project SURE by Union Minister of Textiles, Smriti Irani, last year which is India's biggest commitment  towards sustainable fashion. SU.RE stands for ‘sustainable resolution’ — a five-point agenda for the industry to move towards fashion that contributes to a clean environment.

His 27th book, Anita Gets Bail, is an account of and commentary on the state of the Indian judiciary. In an interview with Newslaundry, Shourie speaks to Madhu Trehan about the issues the legal system is grappling with today.Commending the efforts of Niranjan Takle, the Caravan journalist who wrote about the possible tampering with evidence in the probe into Justice Loya’s murder case, Shourie expresses distress over the case.On the transfer of the judge appointed to hear the Sohrabuddin Sheikh murder case and absenteeism of main accused Amit Shah, BJP president, from the hearing despite being summoned, he remarks: “The Supreme Court does nothing! It is their own order being violated, but (the Supreme Court remains) asleep, not asleep but looking the other way.”He further mentions points about the legal proceedings in the Loya case. “After the story is published by Caravan, the Bombay advocates’ association immediately files a petition in the high court saying there should be an independent inquiry into the circumstances of the death,” he says, adding: “And suddenly, two unknown petitioners turn up in the Supreme Court and suddenly the Supreme Court says, ‘Noo… no... no..., we'll hear it. Nobody else will hear the case’.”Madhu asks Shourie whether the departure of Smriti Irani from the I&B ministry, and the new minister’s comment that he won’t control the media, is a positive sign. He replies with a wonderful couplet: “Qaidi ka mann behlane ko, darbaan badalte jaate hain.” (To keep the prisoner engaged, gatekeepers are often changed.)On the speculation of possible mistakes that led to Irani’s departure, he says, “After all, Smriti Irani could not be issuing those instructions (and) circulars without clearance (from the PMO).” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On this week’s NL Hafta, Abhinandan is joined by Madhu Trehan, Raman Kirpal and guest Ajoy Ashirwad, Deputy Editor at The Wire. Journalist TS Sudhir from India Today joins the panel on the phone to discuss the Karnataka results. The talk kicks off with the elections, with Sudhir sharing the possible political manoeuvrings that can be adopted by the BJP to prove its majority in the Assembly. Enumerating on the vulnerable spots in the JD(S) and Congress, he says: “Caste and Cash, these are the two things that are being used to kind of ensure a majority for the BJP government.” Abhinandan brings in the Karnataka governor’s decision to call the BJP first to form the government. Madhu weighs in with a pertinent reference to 1996. The Suresh Mehta-led government in Gujarat, under which the present Karnataka governor held a cabinet portfolio, was dismissed by then Prime Minister Deve Gowda. She remarks, “So, this was his Karmic chance.” Ajoy says: “The governor was facing a kind of complicated situation where he had to choose between constitutional responsibility and party loyalty, and we know what he chose now.” On the matter of “horse-trading” of MLAs, Abhinandan comments: “One thing it definitely shows is that our democracy is very immature.” He adds: “For one, something like this happens… and no reporter is out there who will question the MLAs who flipped! Why did you flip? What were the specifics?” Abhinanadan wonders about the possibility of turncoats being re-elected. Sudhir says it depends on the constituency, for instance in places like Ballari ‘muscle power’ can be used to ensure no formidable candidate stands against them. The panel also discusses the ‘supremacy’ of certain individuals and groups that still persists, despite the system discouraging discrimination. Talking about whataboutery, which has become the trend nowadays, Abhinandan weighs in by saying: “This whataboutery has just become the default setting of not just politicians but every journalist in the country.” Madhu adds: “They don’t have any credibility at all. I think we’ve come full circle on that.”Raman points out that “we've hit the bottom already. If you check the TRPs… people have stopped watching TV”.Adding to this, Madhu talks about the ban on Republic TV in a chain of hotels because of the thought process of the owner.Talking about Smriti Irani and the recent cabinet reshuffle, Abhinandan asks: “Why do you think she was asked to go?” Madhu responds: “I will really miss her. She’s very articulate, she’s very well dressed… I don’t think any of the things she’s done, they weren’t done by herself alone. They were done with the PMO’s knowledge and approval. The government has its eye on the 2019 elections.”Raman agrees, saying “she used to pick up fights and creates controversy… the government doesn’t want it, very simple.” Ajoy adds that “all the controversies she created actually worked out to the advantage of the BJP."Abhinandan updates the panel by reading a report on News18. "Security to be withdrawn from the resort where all MLAs are staying - they’re being moved to Punjab or Kerala." To this, Madhu asks, “Why has he chosen Punjab and Kerala?” Abhinandan points out that there is a non-BJP government there. He jokingly asks Ajoy: “Would you say Odisha’s biggest contribution to the country has been Sambit Patra?” Ajoy in his reply highlights the stereotypes and adds: “Why would I say that… He represents the Odiya face in Delhi. Not the food or dance forms and diverse cultures.”The panel talks about Patra’s crassness that is conspicuous in his verbal and online communication. Abhinandan feels that “he is just a very vile man” while Madhu says “he is very entertaining”. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
