Amy Feierman was 38 when she realized she wasn't happy anymore in her very successful business as an Amazon seller and coach.  Prior to that she had loved her business, but it was starting to feel more like a “J.O.B.”  than the entrepreneurial endeavor she had started out with.  She realized she needed a change and it was going to require her to get out of her comfort zone to explore her next move.   Also, she found that there was some Judo required in changing the way she was thinking about giving up that business in order to feel good about moving on.

The future is hazy. It's unknowable. And that makes taking decisive action to build a stronger business much more challenging. But we have a choice. We can either fight it--and metaphorically try to shake that damn ball until we have a complete picture of what the future is going to be. Or we can make decisions based on the information we have, a solid understanding of our goals, and an acceptance of the uncertainty of it all. Waiting until you have all the answers you need or want is a great way to keep spinning your wheels. While embracing uncertainty might be risky and it's can definitely be scary, but it's the only way we move forward. This month, we looked at 3 different stories of embracing uncertainty. Lou Blaser told us how a big life change allowed her to look at her business in a new way and see how she could finally build the business she'd been dreaming about for years. Sarah Avenir shared how she leads herself and her team through uncertainty. And Cher Hale told us about getting clearer and clearer on her vision for life and business--and the big moves it required of her. We're rounding out this conversation about embracing uncertainty today by hearing from 4 more small business owners: Podge Thomas, Melissa Dinwiddie, Kat Lu, and Amy Feierman. Each entrepreneur embraced uncertainty in a way that allowed them to move forward despite not having all the answers or a guarantee of what the future would hold. My guess is that you'll hear a version of situation or question you're wrestling with right now in at least one of these stories. The post EP 291: Reply Hazy. Nothing happens overnight when it comes to growing your Amazon business. This doesn't seem to be the case in social media, where you can see posts that look like instant success. We see these stories of overnight sensations or earning thousands of dollars in days, but what all the hype doesn't tell is a deeper truth. They don't show the journey of how they got there: we only see the stats and the dollars. The reality is - to achieve success, we need to make changes towards it, no matter how small the steps we take. In this episode, I discuss how small, incremental changes directly impact future significant results. I explain how the hype on social media platforms doesn't show the hustle behind it. I discuss why you need to take small steps for your business right now and illustrate how the 15-Minute Hustle can help. I also share ideas on what consistent changes you can make for your Amazon business on a daily and weekly basis as well as underscore the importance of visualizing the progress of your business.   “Small, calculated steps work. Change - it's the only constant thing in business, whether it's a brick-and-mortar store on an online Amazon business. Over the years, Amazon has made changes that can impact how we run our business. Sometimes, they even make changes without first announcing it, leaving some Amazon sellers surprised - or worse - suspended. Luckily, there are people and teams who can advise sellers on suspensions and reinstatement, like Lesley Hensell. Lesley is a specialist on Amazon account reinstatement who has built Riverbend Consulting, an agency that helps third-party sellers reinstate their businesses on platforms like Amazon. Lesley joins us today to discuss the common reasons Amazon accounts are suspended. She shares tips on how to avoid Amazon account suspensions and reveals what caused the rise of warnings for product detail and variations pages. She explains the different Code of Conduct violations on Amazon and shares the story of how an Amazon seller was suspended for collusion despite acting in good faith. She also discusses assessing your risk profile as an Amazon seller and underscores the value of saving money when running an Amazon business.   “Amazon takes listing errors that we sellers see as small things very seriously. There's a lot of hype about retail arbitrage on Amazon. Blog posts, ads, and websites are out there talking about retail arbitrage to people who want to start an Amazon business. It's viable for you if you want to set up an online store as a side hustle to fund your Disneyland adventure. What the hype isn't telling you is that retail arbitrage comes with risks that you need to be mindful of. And if you want a legitimate online business that will get you out of your 9 to 5, you wouldn't want to invest everything that you have in something as risky.   In today's episode, we discuss the risks involved in doing retail arbitrage on Amazon and how they can get your seller account suspended. We share the story of an Amazon seller whose merchant account was suspended and illustrate what happens when Amazon suspends your account. We define what an Amazon Plan of Action is and why wholesaling on Amazon is a better alternative. We also reveal some of the reasons Amazon business owners avoid wholesaling and bundling as well as underscore the value of building multiple income streams.   “Retail arbitrage is not sustainable if you want to grow - it's scary and risky, and it's not worth it to risk your business.” - Kristen Ostrander   This week on the Amazon Files: The risks of doing retail arbitrage on Amazon How an Amazon seller who did retail arbitrage got suspended What a proof of authenticity is and what happens when Amazon suspends your account What an Amazon Plan of Action is and what to do when your account gets suspended Other platforms where you can do retail arbitrage and resell items Why Amazon wholesaling and bundling are better alternatives to retail arbitrage The difference between manufacturers and liquidators The reasons Amazon sellers shy away from wholesaling The importance of building multiple streams of income and not putting all your eggs in one basket   Related Content: Find 100s of Wholesalers by Noon Today   Want to Learn More? Competition can be a real hurdle to overcome in any business or industry. This certainly is the case in Amazon, where competitors can be as unpredictable as the market itself. The struggle is real: how can you earn a real living income on Amazon with so many businesses trying to sell the same products to the same customers? How can you set yourself apart? Many businesses lower their prices to compete but it's not just about the money. With the right steps and strategies, you don't need to worry about losing money to your competitors: you can stand out. In today's episode, we discuss how to manage, reduce, and eliminate competitors on Amazon. We discuss what a direct and indirect competitor is and identify the kinds of items associated with a huge amount of competition. We share tips and tricks on how to identify Amazon competitors and item and product differences as well as explain why it's important that you do so. Like any other business environment, Amazon is a constantly evolving marketplace. At one time, Amazon sellers had a ‘Midas' touch' and could put anything up for sale. But today, Amazon puts rules and policies in place that restrict some products and brands from being sold. To top it off, Amazon sometimes shoot their regulatory changes first before they give a warning—if they do at all! These constant changes mean that online business strategies that work today may not work within the next six months. It also means that although your Amazon seller account is safe from suspension right now, it may be at high-risk tomorrow. But that does not mean you have to run around in fear. In today's episode, we discuss what selling on Amazon looked like before, how it evolved, and the factors that drive Amazon's policies and restrictions. We reveal tips on how to be more vigilant about policy changes and how to keep your Amazon seller account secure. We discuss what many people consider as ‘grey areas' on Amazon's rules and regulations as well as tips on identifying high-risk items. We also break down retail arbitrage—the good, the bad—and its alternatives.     “Amazon has house rules. You have to follow their rules and protect yourself. Excuses and ignorance don't fly with Amazon.” – Kristin Ostrander     This week on the Amazon Files: The evolution of selling on Amazon Why Amazon developed restrictions and policies How being adaptive to change brings success to Amazon businesses Tips on managing your Amazon seller account risk Identifying low-risk and high-risk Amazon items How retail arbitrage can affect your Amazon seller account's security A secure alternative to retail arbitrage sourcing on Amazon A better way to earn income on Amazon    Related Content:   2020 Confident Wholesale Bundlers Workshop Step-by-step guide to 100s of Wholesalers Wholesale Bundle System 2.0    The Confident Wholesale Bundlers Workshop Comes to a City Near You!   Are you ready to take your Amazon business to the next level? Amy is a podcaster, educator and entrepreneur who has been selling online for almost 10 years. While she started on eBay, most of that time was focused on Amazon. In 2014, she and a friend/colleague started teaching others how to sell on Amazon. This has become her area of expertise. Now now co-hosts the Amazon Files show that you can catch live every Monday night at 9pm eastern. Replays are available on YouTube or a podcast of the same name. Amy’s goal to help others start and grow their Amazon businesses so they can build lives they love. Business Building InsightsIn business it’s best to have multiple places to sell your product. Having a website is essential because that’s where you want to steer people. If you want to broaden your audience, Amazon is a great way to do that. The search in Amazon is amazing as long as you optimize your listing with keywords that people are actively searching for. If you’re selling in Amazon be aware of the rules. Understand the platform well. Read the terms of service and the guidelines. Ask questions of you don’t understand. By niching down you can focus on the segment of the audience actually looking for and buying your product. Work on where you are today and what you want to accomplish. Take baby steps towards that end goal. Don’t do something without a reason behind why you’re doing it. Amazon feels overwhelming. Take it one step at a time and don’t let fear take over business potential.
