Life's a Project is the latest PBL book written by seasoned PBL educator Andrew Larson from a Magnify Learning National PBL Model School. Imagine an educational philosophy that not only emphasizes academic rigor but also  weaves in vital employability skills – that's the essence of the PBL that Andrew brings to life in our latest episode. His new book, "Life's a Project: The 6 A's of Project Based Learning" serves as a guide, sharing his personal transition from traditional teaching methods to a decade-long PBL adventure. The conversation promises to dismantle myths surrounding the perceived chaos of PBL, instead highlighting how it supports a structured, innovative classroom environment.Venture with us through the 6 A's framework, a vital part of PBL that marries soft skills with academic rigor. We also discuss a newly introduced seventh A – aspiration – pondering its role in PBL. The discussion reinforces the notion that chasing perfection in education may well be a fool's errand, advocating instead for a more accommodating, practical approach to teaching that embraces the iterative nature of learning. Finally, we tackle the often-overlooked but crucial aspect of PBL – assessment. By unraveling the creation of versatile rubrics, we demonstrate how standardized tools can enhance the learning experience. We shed light on the role of educators as facilitators, providing the structure necessary to scaffold student learning. If you're an educator seeking to enrich your teaching practice with authentic learning experiences, this episode will not only offer valuable insights but may very well shorten your learning curve into the world of PBL.PRE-ORDER LIFE'S A PROJECThttps://magnifylearningin.org/lap-waitlistPODCAST EPISODE WITH MICHAEL MCDOWELLhttps://thepblplaybookpodcast.buzzsprout.com/michael-mcdowell-e145SIGN UP FOR THE MAGNIFY LEARNING NEWSLETTERhttps://www.magnifylearningin.org/newsletter-sign-upSHARE A PBL WIN!www.pblshare.com ORDER THE BOOK PBL SIMPLIFIEDhttps://amzn.to/3VLsBtGSCHEDULE A PBL TRAINING WITH MAGNIFY LEARNINGhttps://resources.magnifylearningin.org/onsite-workshopsCHECK OUT RESOURCES MENTIONED ON THE PODCASTPBL Simplified Podcast LinksASK RYAN A QUESTION FOR THE PODCASThttps://www.pblshare.comFOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIARyan's Twitter (X): https://mobile.twitter.com/ryansteuerRyan's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryansteuer/Magnify Learning Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/magnifylearningBOOK A MAGNIFY LEARNING DESIGN DAYS WORKSHOPhttps://www.magnifylearningin.org/design-days-sign-upSome of the links above are affiliate links which means we get a small commission on anything you purchase using that link (at no more cost to you). Celebrating the 300th episode of a podcast feels like a landmark achievement, and it's perfect timing to bring on podcasting peers and pastoral pals, Dr. Andrew Larson and Tim Miller, who join us to chat about the unique juggle of ministry and the microphone. We peel back the curtain on their Monday routines, post-Sunday fatigue, and the weekly pressures that pastors face in crafting meaningful messages for their congregations. As we sit down, sharing our own trials and triumphs, the episode becomes a testament to the power of shared stories in creating connections within our vocation.Navigating sensitive topics can feel like a high-wire act, but Andrew and Tim embrace the challenge with a mix of sensitivity and humor. We discuss the importance of authenticity and relationship-building in our roles while also respecting confidentiality. We share the unexpected joys and heartfelt messages from listeners who find solace in our shared experiences, reinforcing that none of us has to navigate ministry alone. Our conversation then takes a practical turn as we examine how churches can form meaningful partnerships with nonprofit organizations. We exchange tales of community impact, how to sidestep the aggressive tactics of certain nonprofits, and the merits of relational engagement. This episode serves as a hearty blend of advice, anecdotes, and affirmations, reminding all of us in ministry, or those working with ministries, how vital it is to serve with purpose, preserve our well-being, and lean into the support system that surrounds us.ShownotesThe Nonprofit Renaissance is Powered by Vers Creative. We've been talking about books all month, and Andrew shares his processes and thoughts on how to make it happen while being a full-time teacher. We also have a book-related “need to know” focused on how you can get that book written. We know everyone has a book inside them, but very few do anything about it. We start by taking the ambiguity out of the equation. Once you know what you're going to write about, the outlines and chapters begin to fall into place. This episode combines getting that book out there with the benefits of quality PBL. Episode Highlights: [02:07] Need to Know: How do you get your book written? Everybody has a book inside them, but very few get published.[02:21] Take the ambiguity out of the phrase “I want to write a book.” Sit down and write out the title, niche, and start to outline the chapters or main talking points.[03:07] Now start collecting ideas because you have a place to put them.[05:39] You should write your book. "The quality of your life is the quality of your communication" ~ Tony Robbins We live in a material 3-dimensional world, yet our communication is quite often flat and 1-dimensional. It's been said that 55% of our communication is our body language, 38% is our tonality, and just 7% is our words. 7%! If most of the communication we engage in throughout our day is text message and email, our messages are at such a risk of being miscommunicated because only 7% of it is being conveyed! Even a phone call lacks up to 55% of the intended message! Humans have known this for some time... which is where the dawning of visual media comes in. How can we convey messages better? Better yet, what's a way we can instill a targeted emotion? How can images or video influence our thoughts and actions? This week's #truthseekers guest, Andrew Larson, Animator/Producer at The Production Group and Owner/Animator at Spirit Studios, talks about what it's been like to live in this space for decades. What's it like to be a creative? How important is digital marketing in today's day and age? Where does Andrew draw his inspiration from? What does he do when he's in a rut? And perhaps most importantly, how can we communicate more effectively? We decided to bring Andrew to #truthseekers to get inside the mind of somebody who contemplates these things every day.
