Shame might be the most powerful force keeping you stuck in the binge cycle—and you might not even realize it's there.Today I'm joined by Kyira Wackett, a licensed therapist specializing in shame, burnout, and anxiety, for a conversation that gets to the heart of why shame and binge eating are so deeply connected. Shame is the painful belief that we are fundamentally unworthy of love, belonging, and connection—a feeling that shows up intensely after binges or any behavior we try to hide.Kyira shares her own story of struggling with food and body image, and how her "protective shame parts" developed in childhood to keep her safe. She walks you through practical exercises to identify your shame stories and understand what's really driving the behaviors you want to change. What You'll Discover:The difference between shame and guilt—and why shame leads to hiding and performingHow to identify if shame is running the show in your relationship with foodWhy trying to control the externals keeps you stuck (and what to focus on instead)The problem with most New Year's goals—and how to set intentions that actually align with your valuesIf you've ever felt like you're stuck in a cycle of trying to be "good" with food, only to end up binging and drowning in self-criticism, this conversation will help you understand what's happening underneath—and give you a path forward.Connect with Kyira at https://adversityrising.comListen to Jane's conversation on Kyira's podcast, Untethering Shame, where they discuss shame, binge eating and parts work. This week, I'm joined again by emotional eating expert Tricia Nelson. This time, we explore the intricate connection between emotional eating and romantic relationships. We talk about how emotional responsibility includes becoming aware of the ways food struggles can impact intimacy and communication in relationships. We also discuss how isolation can intensify emotional eating, why connection and honesty are essential to healing, and the underlying reasons food becomes a coping mechanism. Tricia shares practical ways she has helped people shift these deep-rooted patterns, including how processing, expressing, and communicating how we're feeling is essential to changing compulsive eating behaviors. It's an honest conversation about how long-term struggles with food can affect the people in our lives, with practical advice for how to feel and connect with others instead of numb and avoid with food. In Part 2 of the Food Noise series, Kathryn explores how the modern food environment and intense cultural pressure around bodies and weight contributes to an overabundance of thoughts about food. This episode is designed to help you better understand why the noise shows up, so you can approach it with less self-blame and more self-compassion. Kathryn acknowledges that some people are more sensitive to today's environment than others and uses a thoughtful comparison to other natural drives to show that increased “noise” doesn't have to dictate your actions. If you've been telling yourself you've “fallen off track” this year, this episode is for you.In this raw, honest conversation, I open up about my own struggle to find my groove again in the new year and the uncomfortable truth I had to face along the way. Most women don't derail their progress with one big mistake. They quietly loosen their standards.A skipped habit here.A little negotiation there.A plan that slowly becomes optional.By the end of the week, they feel flat, frustrated, and disappointed, but can't pinpoint what went wrong. In this episode, I break down: • Why “falling off the wagon” is usually a myth • How lowered standards quietly sabotage weight loss and self-trust • The difference between motivation problems and containment problems • Why midweek is where identity either holds or leaks • How emotional eating sneaks back in through micro permissions • What to do when you feel off track without doing anything extreme • How to raise your standards again without punishment, restriction, or a full resetThis isn't about being harder on yourself. It's about being more honest with yourself. If you've been blaming motivation, hormones, or willpower, this episode will help you see the real issue and fix it before another week slips away.Get Kylie's exact weight loss BlueprintGet Kylie's Free Weight Loss CourseFollow Kylie on InstagramBOMBSHELL BLUEPRINT WEIGHT LOSS FOR EMOTIONAL EATERS
One month into the new year, many people are feeling discouraged. Maybe you're not where you thought you'd be. Maybe you feel like you've backslid into old patterns. This episode offers a completely different way to look at where you are - one rooted in both truth and compassion. You'll learn about measuring the gain instead of the gap, why you're never actually back at square one (even when it feels like it), and how to find what's different even in familiar patterns. What You'll Discover:• The Gap and The Gain: two completely different ways to measure progress• Why you're never actually back to square one (even when the pattern looks identical)• How to find what's different even when you feel like you've backslid• Why old patterns are signals from your nervous system, not evidence of failure If you're feeling discouraged about where you are right now, this episode will help you see your progress with new eyes - and understand what you actually need to move forward.Resources mentioned in this episode:Book: The Gap and The Gain by Dan Sullivan & Dr Benjamin HardyLearn more about 1:1 coaching and schedule a Breakthrough Call: janepilger.com/breakthroughWant to know why you struggle with food and what to do next? Together, they explore why food struggles are often rooted in deeper stories about safety, identity, and being told to shrink, rather than a lack of discipline or willpower. This episode blends lived experience with practical tools, including a playful journaling practice Kayla calls narrative alchemy, designed to make inner work feel lighter, more creative, and more sustainable.

Emotional eating isn't about willpower — and for many women, midlife is when it finally becomes impossible to ignore. In this powerful episode of Asking for a Friend, Michele Folan sits down with emotional eating expert, TEDx speaker, and bestselling author Tricia Nelson to unpack what emotional eating really is, why it intensifies during midlife and menopause, and how women can finally break free from decades of dieting, shame, and self-blame.Tricia shares her deeply personal story — from childhood emotional eating and binge drinking to sobriety at 21 — and explains why food is often used as a coping mechanism for stress, unprocessed emotions, people-pleasing, perfectionism, and burnout. Together, Michele and Tricia explore how hormonal shifts, caregiving roles, identity changes, and boundary struggles collide in midlife, making emotional eating patterns louder and harder to manage. This conversation goes far beyond food rules and meal plans. You'll learn how emotional eating shows up as pain-killing, escape, and self-punishment, why dieting alone never solves the problem, and what it actually takes to heal your relationship with food — without restriction, guilt, or obsession. Tricia also addresses the misunderstood link between emotional eating, addiction, alcohol, and highly processed foods, and explains why healing requires addressing emotions, stress, and daily habits together. If you've ever felt stuck in a cycle of “doing everything right” but still struggling with food, weight, or self-trust — this episode will feel like someone finally put words to your experience.Tricia is the author of Heal Your Hunger and founder of Heal Your Hunger, a proven program helping women end emotional eating by addressing the root causes — not just the symptoms.

If you keep starting strong with weight loss and then slipping back into emotional eating, binge cycles, or self-sabotage, this episode is for you.In this raw and honest episode, I break down exactly how I lost 18kg in six months. If you've ever lost weight only to gain it back, this episode will explain exactly why.Permanent weight loss doesn't come from motivation, discipline, or trying harder. It comes from following the correct sequence of change. Most people fail because they skip phases, rush the process, or rely on emotions instead of structure. In this episode, I break down the 5-step process that creates permanent weight loss, the same framework I teach women who are done with yo-yo dieting, emotional eating, and starting over every January. This isn't about food rules. It's about behaviour, identity, and self-trust.You'll Learn:• Why motivation is unreliable, and momentum is everything • How setting standards removes daily decision fatigue • Why following your plan instead of your mood changes everything • How self-trust is built through consistency, not confidence • Why your brain only rewires after proof is created • The exact reason weight loss finally starts to feel automaticIf you want weight loss that lasts, this episode will show you the order you must follow.Get Kylie's exact weight loss BlueprintGet the Bombshell Journal & Planner setGet Kylie's Free Weight Loss CourseFollow Kylie on InstagramBOMBSHELL BLUEPRINT WEIGHT LOSS FOR EMOTIONAL EATERS

Binge eating is a HABIT that needs to be rewiredYou spent years telling yourself:To only have 1 TBSP of PBDon't eat after 7pmOnly have 1 cookieMake sure you get protein and veggies at every meal.& these rules just left you feeling super deprived, thinking about food so much more and having strong urges to eat way past fullness. It doesn't matter how motivated or discipled you are… as soon as a strong urge comes on, it feels like you don't have a choice but to give in.And every time you give in, you're further ingraining this habit of binge eating into your brain.Alongside shaming yourself for not being “motivated” enough to just say NO.Your brain gets rewired through REPETITION of the proper brain based tools and shifting your mindset around how you see food….And that's exactly what you'll learn inside my Root & Rewire Membership!ROOT & REWIRE MEMBERSHIPCONNECT WITH LORNA:---> Instagram @lorna_bingeeatingcoach---> Tiktok @lorna_bingeeatingcoach

You'll learn why high-performing women don't rely on motivation, how standards eliminate self-sabotage, and how identity-based decisions make weight loss inevitable. This is not a hype episode. It's an identity intervention. What You'll Learn in This Episode:• Why motivation keeps women stuck in the same weight loss cycle • How binge eating is a standards issue, not a food issue • The reason emotional eating is learned behaviour, not a personal flaw • Why structure beats discipline every time • How to stop negotiating with cravings like they deserve a vote • Why acting “as if” creates results faster than waiting for proof • How obsession with weight loss blocks fat loss • The skill that stops self-sabotage without relying on control • Why long-term identity change matters more than short programsGet Kylie's exact weight loss BlueprintGet the Bombshell Journal & Planner setGet Kylie's Free Weight Loss CourseFollow Kylie on InstagramBOMBSHELL BLUEPRINT WEIGHT LOSS FOR EMOTIONAL EATERS

There is a widespread idea that bingeing has “protective” value for the binge eater—protection from difficult emotions, pain, stress, and other problems. I remember believing this when I was bulimic, and I know how convincing it can feel. In this episode, I talk about why the protection narrative may be holding you back in recovery, and how you can learn to see that bingeing isn't safety—it's dangerous and it's hurting you. You can learn to recognize and dismiss the protection thoughts and realize you're much safer without binge eating. Subscribe to my email list (and get my free Inspiration Booklet!)
