We each have to make thousands of decisions every day—what to wear, which route to take, what to eat for lunch, which books to read. When you're writing a book, you can expect to add another hundred decisions to your day. What time of day should I write? Should I research more or dive into writing the content? Should I edit as I go or finish the whole draft first? While making decisions is often tough, it can be easier when you know what kind of decision maker you are. With this knowledge, you can gain insight into the kinds of decisions you are probably going to make in the future, and find your most efficient path forward. In episode #114 of The Author's Corner, Robin is joined by Cheryl Strauss Einhorn, who has identified five decision maker types, which she calls Problem Solver Profiles (PSPs). We discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each one, and how you can use them, not only to make better decisions, but also to strengthen your personal and professional relationships. Cheryl also shares how your PSP can relate to problems you encounter in writing. Becoming Your Best | The Principles of Highly Successful Leaders
Making a Google search is so common the act already became a verb: googling something. There's nothing wrong with it, yet we should pay more attention to some things. For instance, relying mindlessly on one source of information is agreeing to that source's motivations, values, and interests. In today's episode, thanks to our guest, Cheryl Strauss Einhorn, we learn about AREA, an evidence-based decision-making system she created to counter cognitive bias to expand knowledge while improving judgment. Cheryl developed the AREA method after over two decades as an award-winning investigative journalist writing for The New York Times, Foreign Policy Magazine, Barron's, and Harvard Business Review. Cheryl is a Founder and Author of multiple books on leadership and self-development, a TEDx Speaker, and the Creator of the AREA Method. In January 2008, she founded Decisive, a leadership training and professional development company. Throughout our conversation, Cheryl explains why she believes decision-making is a skill that can be learned and developed, debunks the idea that decision-making is an individual activity, and describes the five problem-solver profiles. We also discuss Cheryl's AREA Method, why she describes the AREA Method as the opposite of googling, how to "clean" bias' dirty windshield, and more. Tune in to Episode 389 and prepare yourself to develop your decision-making skills and make big decisions better. Some Questions I Ask: Please, tell us about AREA; how did it come about? What is it? What's your current process for making a complex, high-stakes decision as a leader? Do you conduct extensive research? Rely on your intuition? Ask for advice from trusted parties? Most decision-making models include some version of each of these components. But few actually guide you through a specific, logical research process — and fewer still include built-in cognitive bias challenges. That's what makes the AREA Method different. In this week's episode of The Enlightened Executive, we are joined by Cheryl Strauss Einhorn, the developer of the AREA Method — a decision-making system for individuals, companies, and nonprofits to solve complex problems. AREA is an acronym that stands for Absolute information, Relative sources, Exploration and Exploitation, and Analysis. As a result of applying this process, leaders end up with a documented trail of ordered steps they took to arrive at their decision, including self-reflection. This trail not only makes them feel more confident in their final decision but also helps improve buy-in from team members who now have proof they did their due diligence.
Cheryl Strauss Einhorn shares her decision-making system to solve complex problems. Whether you are deciding between colleges or navigating a career decision, Cheryl's powerful AREA Method helps to make complex personal and professional decisions with confidence and conviction. Life is filled with uncertainty. Cheryl's book, Problem Solved, offers a proactive way to work with, and work through, ambiguity to make thoughtful, confident decisions.Cheryl is an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School and has won several journalism awards for her investigative stories about international political, business, and economic topics.
Former British Prime Minister and global diplomat Tony Blair credits Cheryl Strauss Einhorn, founder of CSE Consulting, with developing “the science of decision-making” and helping him resolve tough choices. Einhorn, a master problem-solver, business consultant, author, and public speaker, is the developer behind the AREA Method, an increasingly popular framework that allows executives, politicians, and even investors to make better choices, especially when the stakes are high. When you’re trying to answer significant business or personal questions, those with large and long-term repercussions, Cheryl tells host and award-winning journalist Dean Rotbart that her proprietary method will lead to better outcomes and a more efficient, less-stressful, decision-making process. One high-impact decision that is actually easy to make, is not to miss this week’s valuable edition of Monday Morning Radio. Today I'm glad to welcome Cheryl Einhorn to The Psychology Podcast! Cheryl is the creator of the AREA Method, a decision making system for individuals and companies to solve complex problems. She is also the founder of CSE Consulting and the author of the book Problem Solved, a Powerful System for Making Complex Decisions with Confidence & Conviction. Cheryl teaches as an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School and has won several journalism awards for her investigative stories about international political, business and economic topics. In our conversation she takes us through the philosophy behind her unique perspective taking process for making better decisions as well as through each of the steps: The AREA Method gets its name from the perspectives that it addresses: Absolute, Relative, Exploration & Exploitation and Analysis: A, or Absolute, refers to the perspective of the research target. It is primary, uninfluenced information from the source itself. R, or Relative, refers to the perspective of outsiders around the target. It is secondary information, or information that has been filtered through sources connected to the target. E, or Exploration and Exploitation, are really about the human mind. Exploration is about listening to what other people think and believe. Exploitation is about listening to yourself and examining your own assumptions and judgment. The second A, or Analysis, synthesizes all of these perspectives, processing and interpreting the information you’ve collected. Cheryl also shares stories of the people she encountered along her journey of researching the book and explains a variety of applications of this method. We hope you enjoy this actionable episode, and if you're interested to applying this method to a decision you're struggling with right now, be sure to check out Cheryl's free resources!
