Now, more than ever, we are trying to find ways to save ourselves time and to spend more time with our families and doing things that we enjoy. From hiring a landscaper to help tidy up our lawns, ordering our groceries online for pickup, or a talented baker to make delicious cupcakes and treats for special events. But for some reason, the longest standing service, hiring a house cleaner, is still something many are embarrassed or don't want to admit that they outsource, and yet, it's the most used service that we ALL admit we could use! Karen Kavanagh and her team of ladies at Valley Clean Co know that having a clean home is essential to your well being and hiring help shouldn't be considered a luxury. And her team is here to serve the Arnprior, McNab/Braeside and most recently, Cobden area to help keep your home dust-free and your floors sparkling! Karen talks to Holly about what goes on behind the scenes of this industry - from her experience to cleaning a hoarder's home, a client's husband asking her staff to leave while in the midst of cleaning, and an awkward encounter her team members ran into with their clients. She also shares cleaning tips, my favourite "can you not" cleaning style, and how she manages to keep her own house tidy with 6 kids if her own! Trust me, you're going to want to tune into this one!

It's been a long time coming, but I'm so happy to finally be bringing you a conversation with my dad, Darrel O'Shaughnessy. If you want to get to know someone, often meeting the parents is the best way to do that. Let's just say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. You can also listen to a chat I had with my mom back in Episode 14.Born in Bancroft, Ontario in 1946, Darrel O'Shaughnessy grew up in the post war era of opportunity, which he didn't take for granted. He has worn many hats, from being a chef, to being an officer with the Ontario Provincial Police. He was the Director of Security at Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. where something like 80% of the worlds isotopes were derived, and later, branched out on his own to share his security expertise as a consultant. My Dad was always a hard working dude, travelling often to seek out new challenges and opportunities to make a better life for our family.Darrel never fully retired. Later in life, he and my mom built a Dragon Boating community in Kelowna, B.C. Later, when they moved back to Arnprior, Ontario, they founded the Arnprior Dragon Boating Club, dedicated to inspiring health and fitness, for all ages through the sport of dragon boat racing. Dad became an active board member with the Senior's Active Living Center in Arnprior, which led to him developing “Men's Sheds”, non profit entities that support senior men by providing a place of camaraderie, purpose and meaning. Members of Men's Sheds are active in the community and work hard on projects such as building toys for fairs and markets, picnic tables and benches for parks and were active in building screens for various public facing services during the Pandemic.Being in service to others has been an extremely meaningful path for my dad and he has been recognized for his efforts. He was recently named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International “in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world.” Humbly, he accepts this award on behalf of the team of hard working people he surrounds himself with.Dad was always an active guy and considered being active and staying fit very important. He played and coached hockey and was an avid tennis player, classic cross country and downhill skier and, if I'm not mistaken, did pretty well in the Silver Spoon Ski Fest that the Deep River Cross Country Club has been hosting for the last 50 years. I couldn't be more proud of my dad and am so happy to be sharing this conversation with you. Despite it not being cycling centric, this chat still reverberates with the importance of being in service to others, finding meaning and purpose in one's life and the importance of living an active and stimulating life. I'm joined by my great friend of 20+ years Derek Stashick where we wax poetic about classic stories of yesteryear including our epic boxing matches "The Fire in Arnprior" and the "Barrage in the Garage" in high school! We also delve into some classic tales of why I was nicknamed 'No Skates Harrison', the unbelievably stupid faux pas in grade school that foiled my attempt at making the basketball team and how Derek was so huge in high school that he dominated hoops! Since he's a (shudder) Ottawa Senators fan we break down their draft, why he wasn't initially happy with it and why the Seattle Kraken didn't select better players in the expansion draft. He then hangs up on me mid-call, only to return to try and convince me his Dallas Cowboys have a better offense than my Seattle Seahawks! *Note, Derek is not my best friend. I'm sure he'll be crushed to realize this. I clearly explain in my intro how you can ONLY have ONE best friend, not multiple best friends. He did not make the cut. Sorry Stashick, I'll be sure to beat you in future boxing matches "The Static in the Attic", "The Mush in the Bush" and the "Stash in the Trash".
Over the past 15 months, Julie McNamara and her team at Julie and Co., along with many other event planners and vendors, have had to recreate their event planning checklists to enhance weddings, events and other micro gatherings, keeping in mind provincial guidelines and regulations around wearing masks, number of guests, social distancing rules, and even whether or not a DJ would be allowed. Julie stumbled into the event planning industry and fell in love with meeting her clients, helping them to bring their vision to life and work with local vendors to make an unforgettable day. However, when the pandemic struck in March 2020, Julie's team had to work with new brides to reschedule or postpone 41 weddings in 2020, along with all of their vendors, while trying to keep everyone positive and hopeful during these unprecedent times. How do you uninvite guests? What are some alternative ways to have a wedding reception? Should you be asking your guests to prove that they're vaccinated? Julie shares some insight into how she and her team make sure her clients still have the best day, whether it's creating an interactive virtual event, planning a micro wedding, or even an elopement. Growing up on a farm in Saskatchewan, you'd think that Michelle was always meant to get into the agricultural industry... but you won't believe what she went to school for before deciding that butchery was her passion. Holly added a new segment to the podcast called “Ask the Butcher” where we find out some interesting facts about meat...like what the heck is meat glue?! Why are spare ribs called “spare” ribs? Why do steaks that look the same have different names? And there is a well-know area in San Fransisco known as the Tenderloin... and it has absolutely nothing to do with meat! Episode 8: The Grand Trunk's Long Lost Algonquin Railway Hotels In the late 1800s, outdoor recreation in Ontario was just starting to become a ‘thing.' Folks who lived in cities were anxious to escape their urban and industrial woes and reconnect with the wilderness. In 1905 the Grand Trunk Railway had just acquired J. R. Booth's Canada Atlantic Railway, which in turn had merged with his Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound Railway that ran through the southern end of Algonquin Park a few years earlier. Charles Melville Hays, President of the Grand Trunk Railway, who went down with the Titanic in 1912, apparently had a passion for hotels in addition to railways. His view was that the best way to increase passenger traffic on his northern lines and take advantage of the growing interest in outdoors recreation was to establish hotels and well-appointed rustic resorts at certain key locations. Though most of his hotels were in big cities like Ottawa, Edmonton and Winnipeg, he established three along his newly acquired rail line that ran, as indicated previously, through the southern end of Algonquin Park. In 1908 the Highland Inn was built on Cache Lake and in 1912 Camp Nominigan was built on Smoke Lake and Camp Minnesing on Burnt Island Lake. Except for a series of outdoor sign boards at Cache Lake put up by the Friends of Algonquin Park in 2008 and a plaque hidden in the bush on Smoke Lake that was mounted there in 1969, there are few if any signs that any of these vacation paradises ever existed. In this episode, I'm going to try to bring each of them to life and share not just the lodges history, but hopefully give listeners a sense of what it must have been like to vacation there. Most of the content for this episode comes from two key sources. The first is the late Don Beauprie's 2011 book called Destination Algonquin Park, Tracks to Cache Lake and the Highland Inn. Second is my own entitled, Nominigan and other Smoke Lake Jewels that was published in 2012. I've also posted photographs that I have on my Algonquin Park Heritage website for you to peruse at your leisure. Note that there is also a video version of this episode on my Algonquin Defining Moments YouTube channel. (https://youtu.be/5tXI2Wxj5iw) Enjoy!!!

As Halloween is just around the corner, this episode of Scran is all about pumpkins. Rosalind finally gets back on the road again to visit two pumpkin farms - Arnprior in Stirling and Kilduff in East Lothian. Opened in 2015, Arnprior was one of the first pick-your-own pumpkin farms in Scotland. Run by Duncan and Rebecca, who live on the farm with their children and Duncan’s parents, the Arnprior pumpkin patch is a popular family day out every year. Rosalind then heads east to Kilduff Farm in East Lothian. Owners Lucy and Russ talked to her about their decision to open in 2018 and their quest to reduce waste associated with Halloween and pumpkins. Finally we couldn’t talk pumpkins and autumn without chatting about some people’s favourite seasonal drink - the pumpkin spice latte. Find out how to make one at home.
