They address the myths and realities of the mental health consultation, discuss some of the common issues that mental health professionals deal with when supporting infertility patients, and talk about what intended parents can gain from their meeting with a qualified fertility counselor. This international retrospective cohort study evaluated the safety of assisted reproductive technology (ART) in BRCA1/2 carriers who conceived after a breast cancer diagnosis at age 40 or younger. Among 543 women, 107 conceived using ART and 436 conceived spontaneously. ART methods included oocyte/embryo cryopreservation, in vitro fertilization, ovulation induction, and oocyte donation. Patients who used ART were generally older, had more hormone receptor-positive tumors, and a longer interval from diagnosis to conception. After a median follow-up of 5.2 years post-conception, ART use was not associated with an increased risk of disease-free survival events, suggesting that ART is a safe option for pregnancy after breast cancer in this population.

Christie shares how she and Bryan have navigated his cancer treatment over the years (thankfully, he is now healthy and doing well!); how "You're not having a lot of sex when your fiance has just been given a death sentence of six to 12 months," how nothing was the same BC and AD (before cancer and after diagnosis); doing multiple IUIs that didn't work; doing two rounds of IVF; and how they finally, miraculously, had their daughter, who was conceived naturally. TOPICS COVERED IN THIS EPISODE: Cancer: brain cancer; IUI; IVF; cancer treatment; sperm freezing; embryo transfer; pregnancy after IVF and IUI; anxiety; ; chemo; hospitalization for stress; acute colitisFor more, go to https://www.christiebishop.com/EPISODE SPONSORS:WORK OF ARTAli's Children's Book about IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technology https://www.infertileafgroup.com/booksDo not miss Ali's children's book about IVF! This month, July 2024, marks 46 years since the world's first IVF baby, Louise Joy Brown, was born in the northwest of England. Since this historic day of Brown's birth that made international headlines, the International Committee for Monitoring Assisted Reproductive Technologies estimates that at least 12 million babies have been born as a result of IVF and other assisted reproductive technologies, making “science babies” ubiquitous, albeit still too often misunderstood by the general public. The guests on this episode, Ellen Weir Casey and Laurie Sirus, underwent in-vitro fertilization in the early days of IVF, in the early 1980s and 1990s respectively, when the general public, news, and media called babies born from this procedure "test tube babies" -- even though no test tubes were involved!Ellen became Colorado's first IVF mom and Laurie delivered twins via IVF a decade later after grappling with the decision to pursue treatment due to the fact that it was still considered a somewhat experimental procedure, and since she knew the Catholic faith prohibited it. Carli tells Ali all the details, starting from when she and her high school sweetheart-turned-husband, Brian, started to try for a baby, and what happened when it wasn't working. She talks about traveling the world playing professional soccer, why she didn't want to have kids while she was playing, and how, when she retired at 39, she found out, "It's a lot harder to get pregnant than people think." She explains being told they should do IVF, going through the retrieval process, and how her first transfer didn't work. She also talks about why they needed to take a mental break, what it felt like to do their next retrieval, and how she felt when she found out she was finally pregnant. "This journey was a humbling experience," she says. "For someone who's achieved greatness in the soccer world to have to struggle through this, it was really, really difficult.
