EMERGENCY POD! The crypto market is in a free fall. What is happening?! Bennett Tomlin of Crypto Critics' Corner joins Scam Economy with Matt Binder to break down what stablecoin Terra (UST) is, why it lost its peg and what that means, how its sister coin Luna factors in to all this, and how this all led to one of the biggest crashes across the entire cryptocurrency market – one that has Bitcoin at its lowest value in nearly a year and a half. Bennett and Matt also discuss the coins' parent company, Terraform and its eclectic founder Do Kwon, what an "algorithmic stablecoin" is, and how the whole thing is a ponzi. If that wasn't enough, the two also take a look at some of the conspiracies such as Blackrock and Citadel "attacking" Terra and how a Major League Baseball team was sharing Terra marketing videos as the whole thing came tumbling down. The same week that Organic Fresh Coin Executive Vice President Keith Ingersoll was indicted along with his business partner James Adamczyk for a real estate and wire fraud scheme, we determined that Organic Fresh Coin was not an authentic initial coin offering because, in July of 2019, 86% of the total 88% of public OFC volume was transferred to one wallet.  The approximately 10% of OFC set aside for "founders and team" is also sitting in exactly one separate wallet. This means that the cryptocurrency was never dispersed among the public or even among the numerous executive and board members named in the white paper.  Also, Organic Fresh Coin claimed that it had a soft cap of $15 million in its ICO.  86% of $15 million dollars is $12.9 million, the same amount Ingersoll was indicted for bilking from an investor this week. Guests:Bennett Tomlin (twitter.com/bennetttomlin)Sam Kazemian (twitter.com/samkazemian)Host:Richard Yan (twitter.com/gentso09)Today's motion is “Algo and fraction stablecoins are flawed.”A good stablecoin can sustainably hold its peg, and recover quickly from a premium or discount. This is a basic requirement for stablecoins. An obvious design is the bank coin model, where coins are backed 1-to-1 by fiat. But this creates a single point of failure and incurs compliance overhead. Hence MakerDAO, which made a smart contract driven stablecoin, and is de-coupled from the banking system. But it requires over-collateralization. So new designs popped up and tried to make the next capital-efficient stablecoin to allow under-collateralization, with innovative collateral adjustment mechanisms. We call these algorithmic and fractional stablecoins. Historically, most of these coins failed to hold their pegs. Is there a fundamental problem? Or can these challenges be overcome? The two debaters today include the founder of an algo/fractional stablecoin that has been holding its peg relatively well since launch, that is about half a year, as well as a well-known critic of various stablecoins. If you're into crypto and like to hear two sides of the story, be sure to also check out our previous episodes. My recent foray into the world of the stablecoin tether and the companies and personalities surrounding it has been utterly fascinating. I've seen many curious things during my career but the seemingly blatant nature of what certainly seems, at face value, like a gigantic fraud, has astonished me. In the recent June edition of Things That Make You Go Hmmm..., I dove into Tether (the company), Bitfinex and tether (the coin) and what I found blew my mind. Much of my research was built upon the work of  a group of tether skeptics, one of whom, Bennett Tomlin, agreed to join me for this discussion to hopefully bring the story to wider attention. It's worth pointing out that Bennett is not a crypto-skeptic, but  what he's uncovered is a complex web of deceit and obfuscation that will, I suspect, take your breath away like it did mine. Joining Bennett and myself is George Noble, a hugely experienced hedge fund manager with an extraordinary track record. Like Bennett, George is not anti-crypto, but his own work on Tether has led him to similar conclusions. Hopefully, this discussion between a stalwart of the financial industry and a man who has immersed himself deep in the crypto world can help both sides understand each other better and you to gain a perspective on what could well become the biggest story in crypto in the coming weeks and months... As a companion piece to this discussion, for a limited time, I'm making BOTH this podcast, in its entirety, and the June edition of Things That Make You Go Hmmm..., Schrödinger's Coin, free to non-subscribers. Guests:Bennett Tomlin (@bennetttomlin)Larry Cermak (@lawmaster)Host:Richard Yan (@gentso09)Patrick McKenzie (@patio11, special co-host)Today's motion is “Tether has always been acting in bad faith.”This topic is very relevant for today's markets because Tether is simultaneously an incredibly important, if not the most important, source of on-ramp liquidity for crypto, and a controversial, legally-challenged, blackbox operation that make market participants worry about their undesirable dealings and, worse, imminent collapse. We previously had a similar debate on this with Matthew Graham from Sino Global Capital vs Cas Piancey, the independent crypto commentator and Tether skeptic. So definitely check that out.Today's debaters are Larry from the Crypto publication and Bennett Tomlin, another crypto commentator and Tether skeptic. The episode was also co-hosted by Patrick McKenzie, who also did extensive independent research on Tether. If you're into crypto and like to hear two sides of the story, be sure to also check out our previous episodes.
