He was the strangest titan America ever produced: a whisper-quiet banker who turned systematic thinking into a superpower, building an industrial empire while barely raising his voice above a murmur. Andrew Mellon's story isn't just about money—it's about how patience, observation, and positioning can create more wealth than charisma ever could. But when the Great Depression hit, the very qualities that made him rich made him the perfect villain for a nation demanding change. Whether you're building a business, investing in the future, or seeking insights on strategic decision-making, Mellon's story reveals the power of patience, positioning, and playing the long game. Mellon, which masterfully chronicles his journey from shy Pittsburgh boy to industrial titan, Treasury Secretary, and philanthropist. The second source, 'Thomas Mellon and His Times', written by Andrew's father Thomas Mellon himself provides invaluable firsthand insights into the immigrant experience and the formation of the Mellon family's business philosophy in America. If this story captured your interest, we highly recommend both works – Cannadine's for its thorough examination of Andrew's profound impact on American business, politics, and philanthropy, and Thomas Mellon's autobiography for its intimate portrait of the family's rise from immigrant farmers to financial powerhouses in both nineteenth- and twentieth-century Pittsburgh. The 1920's was a very prosperous time for America, and for much of the world. As I mentioned last episode, during the 20's the American economy became the largest in the world. Yet postwar prosperity was precarious. Much of the American boom was a speculative affair. Fueled by optimism, and fueled by borrowing. Customers were urged to buy on credit or to borrow from the banks, and thus the banks earned large profits. The stock market was riding high. But at any sign of a credit squeeze or a loss of confidence, everything was likely to collapse. Demand would fall, goods would pile up, and prices would plummet. This was precisely what happened on “Black Thursday,” October 24, 1929, the day of the Wall Street crash. I'll talk about that in a minute, but first, I need to talk about one of the weirder things about the 1920's - prohibition. First of all, it's a weird word. Prohibition. Obviously, it refers to prohibiting something, but why did it come to be associated only with the prohibiting of making or selling alcohol? And why did America, a freedom-loving place, decide to outlaw AT THE FEDERAL LEVEL, this one particular thing? We've never had an amendment that outlawed prostitution, or drugs, or corrupt politicians, or driving at night in traffic with your high beams on, though I might support that one. “A wise man never sells out at the first sign of trouble. That's for the pikers.” This is the story of the 1929 Wall Street Crash. On October 24, or “Black Thursday,” stock prices plunge unexpectedly. Early the next week, whatever was left of the bottom falls out on “Black Tuesday.” The New York Stock Exchange has crashed. The Roaring 20s are over. But what exactly is a stock market? How does the American financial system work in the 1920s? And how did the Crash of 1929 happen? From the origins of the NYSE to the development of the Federal Reserve System, we'll unravel it all before it all unravels as we also meet the man that 1920s Americans overwhelmingly want to lead the nation. He's a man known for his gifted abilities when handling a crisis. They call him the “Great Humanitarian.” Welcome to the White House, President Herbert Hoover. For fans of a certain age, Wednesday's news that the Bills cut three staples of their starting lineup and locker room—CB Tre'Davious White, S Jordan Poyer, and C Mitch Morse—was eerily similar to Black Thursday, when, on Feb. 10, 2000, Buffalo cut future Pro Football Hall of Famers DE Bruce Smith, RB Thurman Thomas, and WR Andre Reed. In both cases, the moves were made to help Buffalo become cap-compliant, as current GM Brandon Beane faced a cap deficit of over $40 million before making this year's roster cuts to free up salary space. This week on the Billieve Podcast, host John Boccacino discusses the end of an era for the Buffalo Bills, how cutting mainstays and fan favorites like White, Poyer, and Morse is a harsh reminder that the NFL is a business first and foremost, how the emotional trauma Bills fans felt will be greater than the hit the team takes on the football field, and why, in the long run, these were moves that Beane had to make. On today's Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Joe From Queens to evaluate and discuss a seemingly normal Wednesday afternoon that quickly erupted into a historically chaotic Wednesday as the Buffalo Bills released a trio of incredibly valued big-named players, cut a few more additionally and also redid the contracts of two others. Oh they re-signed David Edwards too. And we think Matt Haack. Not since "Black Thursday" of February 10, 2000 when the Bills cut Andre Reed, Thurman Thomas and Bruce Smith on the same has there been this kind of single-day impact on a Bills roster. At around 2pm Wednesday Patrick had wrapped recording a solo podcast for the next day that was focused on his definition of what a realistically perfect Bills offseason would look like. Two hours later that episode, which will never see the light of day was shot to the moon after the Bills released Jordan Poyer, Mitch Morse and Tre White in one big swoop over roughly 90 minutes. They also cut special teams standout Siran Neal and wide receiver Deonte Harty while redoing Rasul Douglas's contract for 2024 and getting Von Miller to take what actually accounts to a 2024 pay cut. In all the Bills gained over $30 million in cap space during the day, not counting $10 million more not available until after June 1 with the Tre White release. While it greatly helps puts general manager Brandon Beane towards much more practical operating procedure heading into free agency it comes with a pretty big price. Morse still looked good at center last season and the unit was not only one of the low-key strengths of the team but also collectively played together all 17 games. His loss will be missed. So will Jordan Poyer, who came back last year on a two-year deal and while he wasn't the Poyer of old, he played pretty well. Tre White is one of the most popular players in team history and elite cornerback when healthy--the problem is he's now had two major injuries and the Bills have multiple good cornerbacks. The guys, to some extent stunned, react to it----all of it. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter: @PatMoranTweets. “Your friends and comrades that have been lost and that will be lost today are depending on you. Their sacrifice must not be in vain. “Good luck. Good shooting and good bombing.” These were the final words of General Fred Anderson of the Eighth Air Force before sending his men to Schweinfurt on the 14th October 1943. The mission became known as Black Thursday. In a new epic seven-part series inspired by the release of ‘Masters Of The Air' on AppleTV, Al Murray and James Holland tell the true story of the Mighty 8th - one of the most courageous units in the USAAF. Today, Al Murray and James Holland detail the horror of Black Thursday, and the birth of the Bomber Mafia and The Eight Airforce. This appendix episode features two bushfire stories from Australia's early colonial life. One of the earliest bushfire narratives, William Howitt's short story Black Thursday, is an adaptation of his own reporting on the fire disaster of the same name. Black Thursday (February 7, 1851) was perhaps the first great fire disaster in settler Australian history. Although no official records exist, it is estimated that almost a quarter of the Victorian colony was burned. Howitt's literary account is partly a revision of his own reporting that drew together different newspaper accounts to present a sensational report of unprecedented destruction. Howitt's narrative is ultimately a tale of settler endurance that features protagonist Robert Patterson successfully navigating the difficulties of bush life. Nonetheless, he draws heavily on these journalistic accounts for both the narrative setting and the description of the fire itself.Ria: A West Australian Story is notable as the only representation of a woman fighting a bushfire at the fire-front, rather than within the boundaried perimeter of the property or directly outside the homestead. This story presents the opportunity for discussion of gender norms and the gendered politics of fire-fighting Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

For weeks, there had been talk that WWE would start cutting staff following its merger with UFC into the newly formed TKO Group. That process really became noticeable last week when — on what some are calling “Black Thursday” multiple low and high profile wrestlers were cut from the roster. The two most high profile wrestlers were Dolph Ziggler and Shelton Benjamin. In this episode we also look at the long term future for longtime WWE owner Vince McMahon. His role with the company has shifted following the merger as he's now a minority shareholder. But the company still considers him the head of WWE.
Diana Henriques, author of the new book, "Taming the Street: The Old Guard, The New Deal, and FDR's Fight to Save American Capitalism", joins the show to talk about how President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and a small group of men revolutionized Wall Street after Black Thursday with the establishment of the SEC and other agencies. Plus, how today's financial regulators are under pressure, and the risks that pose to all investors. And, investors are finally coming around to the Fed's 'Higher for Longer', mantra, and that is keeping stocks under pressure. October 24th 1929. An unprecedented day of plummeting prices at the New York Stock Exchange becomes known as “Black Thursday” and heralds the start of the 1929 Wall Street Crash. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Synopsis In the year 1929, October 24th fell on a Thursday, and that particular day has the dubious honor of being dubbed “Black Thursday” — for it was on that fateful day that the New York Stock Exchange crashed. A full-blown financial panic ensued, leading to the Great Depression of the 1930s. For many who saw their fortunes wiped out overnight, it must have seemed like the end of the world. Meanwhile, in Charleston, West Virginia, a baby boy was born on “Black Thursday” who would grow up to become one of America's most original composers. By the 1970s, George Crumb was acknowledged as a masterful creator of impressionistic and mysterious soundscapes, with evocative titles like “Dream Sequence,” “Night of the Four Moons,” and “Eleven Echoes of Autumn.” Most of Crumbs' pieces are for small ensemble, but in 1977 he composed a large-scale work entitled “Star Child,” scored for antiphonal choirs, bell ringers, and a large symphony orchestra positioned for surround-sound effect in the concert hall. Crumb says it traces a “progression from darkness and despair to light or joy and spiritual realization.” A recording of “Star Child” was issued to celebrate Crumb's 70th birthday in 1999 — a year, curiously enough, in which the stock market enjoyed an all-time high, just before taking yet another downward plunge! Music Played in Today's Program George Crumb (b. 1929) Musica Apocalyptica, fr Star-Child Warsaw Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra; Thomas Conlin, conductor. Bridge 9095

Today we discuss Bitcoin in JuneTradingShot Chart via Trading ViewChart by GlassnodeMay Market Sell Off…On 19 May 2021, Bitcoin market experienced one of the most significant liquidity events and price draw-downs since Black Thursday in March 2020. The worst of the sell-off on 19 May printed the largest daily candle in Bitcoin history with an intra-day price range of $11,506. Inflation Is a Dangerous Way to Get Rid of Debt Burdens…Joe Biden's fiscal plan calls for increasing those taxes on “the rich” and on corporate America to the tune of $3.6 trillion over the coming years. But as an article in The Washington Post (May 28, 2021) pointed out, even if all of Biden's tax increase proposals were to successfully pass through Congress, their effect in raising federal government revenues would not be fully felt for years ahead. So, the Biden budget proposal assumes a deficit of $1.8 trillion in fiscal year 2022, based on $6 trillion of government spending (or almost one-third of total planned federal expenditures); and there will be budget deficits for many years after that of at least $1.3 trillion per year. Given the current national debt of over $28.3 trillion, if this were to be the pattern of government spending and borrowing over, say, the next ten years, then, in 2031, the accumulated national debt would reach more than $42 trillion.Keep in mind…Rumors of Apple entering Bitcoin & Crypto…more industry news that is circulating around a new position. “The Apple Wallets, Payments, and Commerce (WPC) team is seeking an experienced Business Development Manager to lead Alternative Payments Partnerships.”We have 2021 Bitcoin Conference this month…more bullish news in the Bitcoin space and exciting new companies making their debut. My mother's loss became my loss. The letters I found were like a roadmap through a grief she never meant to leave me. -Jessica Pearce Rotondi In the mood for a story you just can't stop listening to? When she was growing up, Jessica heard stories of her Grandpa Ed's heroism in World War II. Shot down in a B-17 bomber over Germany in 1943 on a day known as “Black Thursday”, he was captured after parachuting onto a farmer's land and spent over two years in the infamous prison camp known as Stalag 17. Once liberated, he returned home to the United States where he became a Pennsylvania State Trooper, raising five children with his wife, Rosemary. Three of their boys went into the military including their eldest son, Jack. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam until the night of March 29, 1972 when his AC-130 bomber vanished over Laos. For the next 36 years, the Pearce family searched for answers, refusing to accept his death without proof. Jessica's mother devotes much of her life to finding out what happened to her brother, while at the same time, raising her daughter's in a loving home, sparing them the pain she felt so deeply. But when her mother dies of breast cancer in 2009, Jessica finds herself on the floor of her mother's closet sitting beside an old file cabinet filled to the brim with handwritten letters, news clippings, military documents and 13 CIA reports about the disappearance of Jack Pearce. On this day, Jessica decides to take up her mother's search and find some answers of her own. An accomplished writer and editor, Jessica's work has been published by TIME, Reader's Digest, HuffPost where she is a senior editor and The History Channel. Her book: What We Inherit is more than a great story, it is living proof of the unbreakable bond between a mother and a daughter. www.JessicaPearceRotondi.com
In Episode 6 of the Ethereal Podcast, DeFi Dad interviews CoFounder of Opyn, Alexis Gauba.Alexis and her team launched the first DeFi platform on Ethereum for buying and selling put options for DeFi assets like DAI lent on Compound as well as the first on-chain put options for ETH. It's been a huge leap forward for the Ethereum and DeFi community to be able to essentially use these on-chain put options as insurance against technical (smart contract bugs) and financial risks while also hedging against the volatility of ETH. At the time of our interview, they were only a month post-launch from ETH Denver, where coincidentally bZx suffered from a flash loan attack, helping further bring to light the need for Opyn to protect DeFi assets deposited in Ethereum smart contracts. Alexis and her two CoFounders all met at UC Berkeley as members of Blockchain at Berkeley, where they came up with the idea for Opyn. During the interview, she explains how anyone, regardless of having zero knowledge about options, can use this popular instrument in legacy finance, cleverly rebranded by Opyn as "protection" to prevent losses in case of smart contract failure or some unforeseen financial risk causing a DeFi apps like Compound to ever fail in the future. They also discuss an even bigger addressable market in offering trustless put options on ETH to protect against a volatile drawdown in the price, especially after we had all recently lived through a near 50% drawdown across the entire crypto market on Black Thursday, March 12, 2020.Alexis is the CoFounder of she256, a nonprofit dedicated to increasing diversity and breaking down barriers to entry in the blockchain space, with nearly 1000 global members. She talked with DeFi Dad about being a female founder in the crypto space and how she's trying to encourage more women and more diversity to work in Ethereum and crypto in general. You can see Alexis speak at the Ethereal Virtual Summit on May 7-8th, 2020 by registering for free at etherealsummit.com/register.To learn more about Opyn, visit opyn.co and follow the @opyn_ team on Twitter.Ask questions in the Opyn Discord at discord.gg/2NFdXaE.Follow Alexis on Twitter at @AlexisGauba.
