SW0133 Soldiers Adapted and Innovated Amidst A Climate of Hostility in Florida In the Second Seminole War, probably every soldier complained about the hostile Florida climate. But, only a few ever did anything about it. In this episode, Professor Jacob Hagstrom of The Citadel joins us to discuss the climate of operations for soldiers in that war. Jacob examines and assesses disputed overall casualties; whether the climate was uniquely inhospitable; whether it was indeed so hostile that the Army could not successfully remove the Seminole from Florida; and how soldiers -- and Seminole -- adapted and innovated within its confines. To increase soldier mobility or to slow down Seminole escape, Gabriel Rains fashioned land mines. John Lane fashioned rubber pontoon bridges so soldiers could more easily cross streams and rivers. And Hezekiah Thistle crafted a saddle that could aid evacuation of casualties who would ride “comfortably” in the prone position. This culture of innovation became so well known that it reached the consciousness of one Edgar Allen Poe, late of the US Military Academy at West Point, who penned a satirical account, The Man That Was Used Up, about service in Florida at the time.   The Seminoles, for their part, innovated as well, switching from labor-intensive log cabins to easily constructed chickees. And they modified their diets to adapt to available produce in the Everglades. They also used the environment to take cover and to conceal themselves from advancing soldiers.  Take a listen to learn how this all panned out.   Seminole adapted to their new south Florida Everglades climate.      Hezekiah Thistle improvised a litter that could be attached to a horse's back for medical evacuation of casualties.     John Lane's rubber bridge pontoons increased the Army's mobility and saw later use in the US-Mexican War and the U.S. Civil War (above). Jeff Mason, is a "traditional values" guy with a lovely wife, and three children who loves to spend as much time as he can with them, doing outside activities.   He and his wife, raise their children traditionally and institutes a value system for them.   He runs a phenomenal business that is worldwide,  bringing technology into the moving business, and seems to be well ahead of his peers in innovating the business. He is a very smart businessman, very humble, and great to talk to. He has used technology to increase other areas of profitability in his business, as he keeps the tradition of the moving business, but has been innovating is discovering more modern pockets of service.  The one thing that sticks out with Jeff is that he puts values first, not only with his family, himself and also his employees. His biggest concern is to give value to the employees. He's quite a humble person, and the type of nice person you don't meet every day. Jeff is a version of Traders Joe, or Costco, in that building a home for his employees and treating like family.  His culture works very well.   I really enjoyed having him on our podcast, he was a breath of fresh air. Research and investigation point to a sustainable future for dairy farming in Ireland. Established in 2018, the VistaMilk SFI Research Centre meets challenges and solves problems in five specific areas: soil, pasture, cow, food and agri-tech. Through organised collaboration and coordination, VistaMilk creates an overview of all research and innovations taking place under its remit and can combine different projects to generate a range of recommendations and practical solutions. Dairy Farming in Ireland These will enable Irish dairy farmers to develop sustainable practices that will protect the 18,000 family dairy farms, the 60,000 jobs, and the €5bn yearly economic contribution that dairy supports in this country. It will also provide consumers with the reassurance of knowing that the dairy products they buy continue to be both farmed and processed locally. For the Irish dairy industry (part of an agricultural sector that accounts for 37% of Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions, the bulk of which are methane) there's an issue beyond reducing its total emissions by 22% by 2030. It's an issue of perception. The conclusion has been drawn that reducing Ireland's emissions is as simple as reducing livestock numbers and two narratives have emerged: · A reduction in emissions from livestock is a ‘quick fix', allowing everyone else to get on with business as usual. · A reduction in Ireland's national herd is the only way to meet agri-sector-specific targets. Both conclusions are overly-simplistic and flawed, and both ignore the significant strides and investments being made by the dairy industry to address the issues, reduce emissions, meet the targets, and become a truly sustainable sector. Much of this work is research-based, and the results that are emerging point to a bright green future for agricultural Ireland. VistaMilk Research The research experts at VistaMilk are showing the way in: · Breeding Programmes – matching specific cows with particular bulls and identifying and predicting cow characteristics, breeding animals which produce high-quality milk, give birth to more valuable calves, are disease resistant, are fertile and produce less methane. · Pasture Management – optimising pasture yield, and pasture quality, reducing reliance on chemical fertiliser, increasing milk production, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. · Biogenic Methane Emissions – agriculture accounts for about 35% of Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions, the bulk of which is biogenic methane: · Research at VistaMilk has shown that national inventory calculations may overestimate methane emissions from dairy cows by up to 18%. · New methodologies have been developed to distinguish short-lived biogenic methane from cumulative greenhouse gases, ie carbon dioxide. · Research is investigating the potential of feed additives supplemented to dairy cows in small quantities to mitigate enteric methane emissions. · Carbon Sequestration – infrastructure is in place at VistaMilk to establish the quantity of carbon being sequestered by pastures, determine the effect of soil type and management practices, and identify practices to optimise carbon sequestration rate. Beyond emissions and environmental impact, VistaMilk is also leading research and development programmes that point to the future of farming as well as suggesting solutions to nutrition-related challenges: · AI, Machine Learning and Machine-to-Machine Communication – predicting grass growth, identifying which animals might become ill, and what impact climate might have – with the aim of modelling the entire farm. · Dairy Products and Nutrition – there's a global obesity crisis costing trillions of dollars a year – what if there was a dairy product – a protein – which, by simply incorporating it in your diet, combats weight gain and ‘trains' the gut to behave differently? To find safety in our connections, we do not need to agree. Instead, we need to be heard, show respect, and strive to understand what each person tells us to meet their needs. I may disagree with someone's hobby because I find it harmful. However, my opinion does not mean I can't appreciate the joy Phil finds in being an outdoorsman and fisherman. I am not here to judge or force my beliefs onto Phil. We all grew up in a meat-eaters world full of traditions supporting the industry. I understand how Phil developed his hobby. I am here to connect with Phil and understand the intensity of his journey over the past few years sharing what he has learned with you and offering insights where it makes sense. I have tremendous respect for Phil and appreciate his leadership, innovativeness, savvy business acumen, the therapeutic comforts he manufactures for others, and how he has implemented an employee stock option plan (ESOP) for employees. A win/win/win for his employees, leadership team, and himself. Are you ready for his fishtail? Moving from Wisconsin to Florida and re-engaging Phil's love of fishing. I find Phil sitting in his car in Crystal River, Florida, hoping the rain won't start during our conversation, which it doesn't. The house he purchased is not what it seems. A few touches turned into an extensive remodeling project. Phil developed a love of flying from his Dad, who was a professional pilot in the military. The fishtail begins here. You will learn about specialized trout and redfish in the Gulf and Charles from Trinidad and Peacock bass, Galy, arctic char, fish in the Amazon, and swimming in rivers with piranha. This fishtail sounds true. Phil uses a cow analogy to calm COVID's pandemic fears. Now we're cows? This is how an innovative mind works. Coming up with analogies that fit the population you work with, something about Manhatten's population of 1.63M people in 23 square miles and 70,869 people/square mile compared to Polk County, where two of Phil's manufacturing companies are located in Chetek and Osceola, WI. Polk County is 956 square miles and has 44,000 people or 46 people/square mile. They are already physically distanced by proximity, Phil emphasizes. That analogy might have calmed the fear of some employees but didn't keep Phil and other employees from getting COVID. Phil discusses what happened when COVID arrived at CORE Products International, Inc. and how their sales volume percentages changed between healthcare providers and consumers. It is worth hearing how they scaled up and down their manufacturing production of masks and hand sanitizer finishing with a surplus of products when product demand changed. Facebook’s head of Social Impact (EMEA), Anita Yuen, joins Alberto Lidji to discuss how they’ve raised $2 billion for good causes, connected blood donors to those in need and innovated at global scale.   The conversation explores how Facebook is using its tremendous global scale to drive forward social impact and social good.   There are more than 2bn people on the Facebook platform, which in many respects can be viewed as a global community of advocates, volunteers and donors.  Combined with the fact that there are millions of non-profits active on Facebook, this provides a great opportunity for these organisations to engage with their community in a genuine and authentic way.   Anita explains how there are various tools on Facebook, such as Groups and Blood Donations, that are being effectively used by non-profits and those in need.    The Blood Donations product was developed in 2018 and it came out of what Facebook were observing in India. They noticed that when people where due to head for surgery in India, people would post on Facebook and ask their friends and family whether they could donate blood. This is because in some parts of India, when people have to go in for surgery they often have to bring in their own blood in case they need a blood transfusion. There is a global shortage of blood.   After observing this, the team at Facebook asked themselves how might they be able to make this process to facilitate blood donations easier.    The Blood Donations product has now been rolled out to various countries, including Bangladesh, Pakistan and Brazil.  As of today, Facebook have over 50m people who have volunteered to donate blood.   Anita speaks with passion and is particularly excited about the sheer scale they are able to enjoy whenever they decide to pilot and deploy new, innovative products.  There aren’t many companies where one can engage with millions and millions of people globally.   Facebook also have created a donations tool that allows people and organisations to raise money for causes they care about.  You can create fundraisers, go out to your Facebook community and ask them to make a donation.   Anita provides useful insight into specific case studies.  ‘Ocean Cleanup’ is a Dutch-based organisation with a focus on cleaning the word’s oceans and rivers.  Anita notes they build amazing tech to clean the ocean.  They are a relatively new organisation and have been using Facebook’s tools for approximately the past year and a half, and have already been able to raise millions of dollars by having people create birthday fundraisers for them. So, two weeks before people’s birthdays, they’re asked whether they’d like to donate their birthdays to the Ocean Cleanup – and this approach has worked extremely well.  Anita is very proud to have them on the Facebook platform.   Another organisation Anita mentioned is a UK-based outfit called ‘Help Refugees’, which was started by an individual who wanted to do something about the refugee crisis and bring supplies to refugees in Greece. They’ve used Facebook’s donations tool to buy supplies; people have created fundraisers for them; and they’ve also encouraged folks to do fundraisers for them.  Anita drilled down and provided insight into a particular instance when Help Refugees were in Calais, France, and experienced their truck breaking down; and they didn’t have enough money to fund its repairs. So, they went onto Facebook and created a special fundraiser just for this. Within a week they were able to fund the repair of the truck.   The community angle is key. Non-profits who understand their community and are able to speak to them in an authentic and genuine way are achieving amazing results on Facebook – people are looking for meaning and an understating of the impact of the causes they’re supporting. Anita explains how the Facebook platform has been very powerful in helping them reach new audiences.  Community engagement is invaluable and can revolve around moments of global crisis, just as it can around small moments, or diaspora communities scattered across the globe.   Anita sheds light on Facebook’s Social Impact Team – a diverse and highly motivated team including a group of engineers mainly based in California who are behind innovations such as their Blood Donations tool, crisis tools, fundraising tools, volunteering and all kinds of social impact products. They also have marketing, communications and partnerships specialists in the team.   Anita remarks that many folks are surprised to hear that they have people working at Facebook who focus only in the social impact space.   We hear how the team at Facebook work very closely with partners. These partnerships help inform Facebook and help them produce new products and ensure their relevance.   Scale is a theme that comes up during the conversation repeatedly. Indeed, Anita is very excited about scale and she notes that in many respects the journey has only just begun.    For instance, the Blood Donations tool is only available in 5 countries at present, but they want to make that global. The same applies to their donations tools, which are only available in just 19 countries.  They’re constantly asking themselves how best to scale such products.   It may be counterintuitive but scaling up a digital tool to new countries isn’t as straightforward as one might think – it’s not about merely flipping a switch.  For instance, to expand their Blood Donations tool, they need to establish partnerships with governments, with NGOs on the ground and with blood banks – you need to get this right on many levels.   Remarkably, their donations tools are only available in 19 markets but, as of September 2019, Facebook have raised over $2bn for good causes and individuals.  Anita invites listeners to imagine what these sums could look like if they were to scale this globally, and the good this could do.   A bit of information Anita underscores very clearly is that Facebook do not take any fees at all for any of the donations they’re helping raise. Anita notes how 100% of what is raised for a charity goes to that charity. Facebook don’t take any transaction fees; they cover the credit card fees of donations.  Facebook has not taken any fee at all for the $2bn that they’ve raised thus far.   When asked about what success looks like in the next 10 years, Anita notes that they’d like to continue to do what they’re doing, in the sense that when they think of their approach to social impact partnerships and product, they’re really observing what is happening on the Facebook community on the platform; what do people want to be doing, and how can Facebook facilitate that in an easier way. They look to the Facebook community and to their partners to say, well, ‘what can we be offering that is genuinely and authentically useful’ and so if Facebook continue to do that Anita feels that they’re going to see their work in this space go into all sorts of different areas., with a focus on scale.   Facebook, Instagram, WahtsApp – these platforms are all part of what Anita calls ‘Facebook Inc’. They are looking to ensure best practice and innovative tools from one platform are deployed across other platforms. In July 2019, for instance, they launched Donation tools on Instagram.  So, they’ve taken learning and best practices and experience from their Donation products on Facebook and are now beginning to build these things out on Instagram.  You can expect to see more innovation on instagram.   Facebook has been on this journey for social impact for quite a while. They launched their donation tools in the USA in 2015.  And even before that, ‘Safety Check’ – one of their crisis tools – came out of the Fukushima disaster in Japan back in 2011.   Anita sheds light on the impact the ALS Bucket Challenge had on Facebook’s thinking.  The ALS Bucket Challenge took place back in the summer of 2014 and out of that Facebook saw essentially the world’s biggest viral fundraising campaign take place on Facebook.  All of these videos were being uploaded to Facebook, people were tagging friends, and so the whole thing was actually happening on Facebook but at the time Facebook didn’t have a way for non-profits to take in donations. But because of that experience Facebook started to see that there was actually a need, and a willingness, for the Facebook community to give to good causes. So, after that, they had a couple of engineers in California start to work on creating a donation button. And, that donation button was the start of what has now become a set of tools that the entire sector and the Facebook community are using.   Anita also explains how the tsunami of 2004 was one of the first major disasters when people actually gave at such a scale but they did it online. Anita remembers that well, because she saw this as a turning point in philanthropy, where non-profits recognised the power of online giving.  Things back then happened quickly but nowhere as quickly as today. If a tsunami happened today they’d be able to move in minutes or seconds, not days as was the case back then.   Anita’s key takeaway for listeners: she starts by letting listeners know she has been thinking about ‘purpose’ lately, and goes on to note that people sometimes may feel unsure as to how to begin supporting a cause.  She explains that now more than ever is a time when everyone can do good. Everyone has a voice. Everybody can use their voice and do good things.  She encourages listeners simply to “just jump in”. Small acts of kindness are amazing. In today's episode of the Idea to Value podcast, we speak with Nick White from Deloitte Sydney about a new innovation which has been receiving a lot of attention, called "Deloitte Assist". Deloitte Assist is a way for patients in a hospital to ask for help using their voice, so that nurses and doctors know exactly what the patient needs before arriving at their bedside. Historically, and still the case in most hospitals, the only way that a patient has to ask for help or attention is a button to press next to their bed. This could be help for anything from being in pain, to having fallen and being seriously injured, to wanting something to drink or asking for the TV channel to be changed. Not all requests are as urgent as others. Deloitte Assist was conceived after a Deloitte partner saw how his father suffered while he was in a critical condition in hospital, and asked himself if there was a better way to help both the patients and those attending to them. The solution uses Amazon's voice recognition features built into Alexa and its Echo devices, to allow the patients to speak with the system, letting it know what they need, and alerting the relevant nurses allowing them to prioritise their work much more effectively. The solution has already won several innovation awards, like the AMY Grand Prix (https://www.dtcollective.org.au/awards/amy-award-winners) and helping Deloitte be listed as one of Australia's most Innovative companies in 2018 (https://mostinnovative.com.au/). Kelly Close founded Close Concerns in 2002; its mission is to make everyone smarter about diabetes. At Close Concerns, Kelly and her team write approximately three million words each year on diabetes, prediabetes, obesity, and digital health for Closer Look, a highly praised service covering the goings-on in the field. Kelly's passion for the field comes from her extensive professional work as well as from her personal experience, having had diabetes for over 30 years. Kelly is the author of more than 30 peer-reviewed manuscripts as well as Targeting a Cure for Type 1 Diabetes: How Long Do We Have to Wait?, a widely praised book published by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in 2013. She also wrote the foreword for the widely praised Bright Spots & Landmines by Adam Brown, published in 2017. Kelly is an associate editor of Clinical Diabetes, a journal focused on diabetes for primary care physicians published quarterly by the ADA. Close Concerns is a winner of the ADA’s “Excellence in Health Communications” Award, and Kelly and her team write a quarterly column in Journal of Diabetes, a peer-reviewed journal based in Shanghai. Kelly chairs the diaTribe Foundation, a nonprofit established in 2013 to improve the lives of people with diabetes and prediabetes and to advocate for action. She is also the founder of diaTribe.org, begun in 2006 as an educational resource for people with diabetes; diaTribe.org’s free educational mailers go to over 100,000 people every 2 weeks. Before starting Close Concerns and the diaTribe Foundation, Kelly’s work focused on life sciences more broadly. Over nearly a dozen years, she worked on Wall Street (investment banking at Goldman Sachs, equity research at Merrill Lynch) and at McKinsey & Company, where her work centered on life science, managed care, and nonprofit organizations. Kelly has a BA in economics and English from Amherst College, magna cum laude, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. LEGO has built a global empire and become a household name thanks to the interlocking bricks that its founders developed half a century ago. But the company almost went belly up in the early 2000s due to an innovation binge that took it too far away from what LEGO did best.
