POPULARITY
Progressive's Jeremy McKeown recently had another chance to talk to Substack's No. 1 financial commentator, Doomberg. It has been some 15 months since they last spoke, a time when Rishi Sunak was Prime Minister and Joe Biden was President. Much has happened subsequently in areas of energy policy, energy markets, politics, and global trade and conflict. And I was keen to catch up. Doomberg utilises his expertise in understanding our fundamental and complex energy requirements and how they impact the broader macro and geopolitical landscape. And, as usual, he does not pull any punches in his well-reasoned views. The pair discuss the rise of populism and the long-term outlook for energy supply and demand. In particular, how the additive energy requirements of AI might counterintuitively lead to much lower oil prices. It's all to do with the unique economics of US shale and AI's enormous demand for US natural gas. Doomberg also offers a no-holds-barred view of the outlook for post-Ukraine war Europe, including the need for political realignment and an explanation of why sanctions fail.

What happens when political ambition trumps economic reality? Doomberg lays it bare. In this episode, Doomberg returns to unpack the dangerous disconnect between Washington's four-year campaign cycle and the multi-decade timelines required for industrial and energy investments. From Trump's tariff threats to the fragility of global auto supply chains, we explore why the U.S. economy may be hurtling toward a recession of its own making. Doomberg dives deep into America's squandered energy advantage, China's calculated rise, and how short-term politics is colliding with long-term capital planning. Tom Bodrovics welcomes back Doomberg, head writer for the Doomberg Substack, to discuss a range of topics including Trump's presidency, national debt challenges, energy policy, and global geopolitical dynamics. Doomberg begins by analyzing Donald Trump's first 58 days in office, highlighting his whirlwind pace of executive actions. He notes that Trump is fulfilling many promises but acknowledges the limitations of relying on executive orders, which can be undone by future administrations. Doomberg expresses concern about the long-term effects of policy whiplash on industries with lengthy planning cycles, emphasizing the importance of predictable governance for capital investment. The conversation shifts to the national debt and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's challenges in refinancing $6.7 trillion of maturing debt. Doomberg criticizes Janet Yellen's management of the debt maturity curve, comparing it to practices seen in emerging markets before crises. He suggests that Trump's team is navigating a delicate fiscal situation, potentially leading to a short but deep recession to reset the economy ahead of midterm elections. Doomberg explores unconventional strategies like creating a crypto reserve or revaluing U.S. gold holdings to alleviate debt pressures. He also discusses the potential for tax reforms and spending cuts. The Doom Bird discusses energy policy under Secretary Chris Wright, praising his business acumen and alignment with pro-energy industry stances. The Lifting of LNG export restrictions and the expected surge in energy production could position Trump's administration as friendly to business despite the risks of policy volatility. Doomberg also examines global trade dynamics, particularly U.S. - Canada relations under Mark Carney's leadership and potential tariffs as a revenue source. The discussion extends to geopolitical tensions, including Trump's approach to Ukraine, NATO, and potential conflicts with Iran. Doomberg questions the feasibility of military interventions and suggests that economic leverage, such as energy supplies, might play a more significant role in resolving conflicts than direct confrontation. Doomberg doesn't have a lot of hope in the near term that the EU will wake up to their own demise and take needed actions to make energy affordable again so they don't deindustrialize into oblivion. This episode we have returning guest Doomberg. Over the years Doomberg has made multiple appearances on the show and his episodes are some of my favorite to record. If you don't already know, Doomberg runs one of the largest paid substack newsletters and puts out some incredible content around energy, markets, business, politics, and the other craziness going on in the world. This episode we talk about how OPEC is losing its influence and the ripple effects that will ensue if the cartel ultimately dissolves. We discuss how ESG has peaked, and how the green movement is on its last leg. The conversation then turns to politics and what's at stake in the upcoming U.S. election. It has become increasingly apparent that "democracy" is threatening to the establishment as they try to cling to their globalist ambitions in the face of the rising popularity of nationalism in western nations. Lastly, we talk the economy, the fed, and how alternative assets like Gold and Bitcoin will play an increasingly important role in a world where governments can't stop printing money. As today's guest rightfully often repeats "Energy is life" Without it, there is no economy. No means to power the systems society depends on. And, like it or not, the world still runs on hydrocarbons -- most especially oil. Well, oil is in an interesting place right now. It's starting to become cheap again. After trading near $120/barrell following the Russian embargo ensuing from the war in Ukraine, it's now nearly half that -- trading at $67/barrel the day of this recording. New technologies are creating oil substitutes from natural gas condensates. And the OPEC cartel, which has exerted control over world oil supply and therefore price, suddenly looks in danger of losing its grip. What do all these mean for the future of oil? And in turn, for the economy? And where are the best opportunities for investors? To find out, we have the good fortune today to sit down with the green chicken himself, energy analyst Doomberg. Andrew and Doomberg will explore the World Energy Statistical Review, offering insightful perspectives on the reality of an energy transition. As global energy demand continues to surge—having more than tripled since 1970—developing nations are driving two-thirds of this demand in their quest to improve living standards. The world reached a grim milestone in 2023, with carbon emissions hitting an all-time high, fueled by the accelerated use of traditional energy sources, particularly in non-Western countries like China. Will 2024 look any different?
Tom Bodrovics welcomes back Doomberg, author of the Doomberg Substack, for a discussion on the science hype cycle and its impact on investments. The science hype cycle refers to the persistent overhyping of scientific innovations, such as solid state batteries, fusion, room temperature superconductors, and cancer cures, which often take decades to materialize. Despite progress, solid state batteries face inherent challenges due to safety concerns and complexity. Samsung's recent announcement of a silver-intensive solid state battery may boost silver demand but diminishes its near-term relevance for investors. Next, the conversation shifts to the automobile industry, focusing on plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs). PHEVs reduce regional gasoline consumption efficiently, but China's competitive edge in manufacturing affordable cars, driven by access to intellectual property, lower labor costs, and less stringent regulations, poses a significant challenge. Consumers favor affordable PHEVs over luxury BEVs, believed to be saturated in demand. The discussion touches upon the carbon footprint of battery production for electric vehicles and the importance of recycling them. The focus should be on addressing pollution rather than just reducing carbon emissions. China's lenient environmental regulations give it an edge in industries like magnesium production. Doomberg advocates continued investment in nuclear, natural gas, and existing hydroelectric power due to their reliability and suitability. He dismisses fusion reactors as unnecessary distractions from proven nuclear technologies. Small modular reactors and thorium reactors hold potential but lag behind large modular reactors, which offer known designs and predictable supply chains. The conversation addresses the Russia-Ukraine conflict's implications for energy markets, Russia's role as a nuclear superpower, and the consequences of NATO involvement. Doomberg expresses concerns about the conflict's outcome and its impact on gold as a neutral reserve asset amidst geopolitical tensions and the bifurcation of the world into G7 and BRICS. He concludes by advocating for thoughtful consideration of military conflicts and their consequences, and introspection about the wisdom of engaging in war. Join Doomberg and I as we discuss several topics sure to stir even the most languid of blood including the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the changing nature of warfare with the rise of drone technology, and the concept of peak cheap oil. Doomberg's argument that peak cheap oil is a fallacy and that human ingenuity will always find ways to extract and produce more hydrocarbons has garnered plenty of attention (and pushback) in recent weeks so here's another chance to understand why and to hear about the backlash they received for their views on the matter. Finally, just when you think we've run out of controversial subjects, the conversation turns to an upcoming piece on the assault on climate denialism and the labeling of certain views as hate speech… Every episode of the Grant Williams podcast, including This Week In Doom, The End Game, The Super Terrific Happy Hour, The Narrative Game, Kaos Theory and Shifts Happen, is available to Copper, Silver and Gold Tier subscribers at my website www.Grant-Williams.com. My guest in this edition of The Grant Williams Podcast is a man who finds both himself and his field of expertise at the very heart of recent events in Ukraine, geopolitical strategist and author, Peter Zeihan. Peter's books, The Absent Superpower, The Accidental Superpower and Disunited Nations have been incredibly helpful to me in understanding the strengths and weaknesses of not just the global geopolitical landscape as a whole, but also the individual countries involved in the escalating tensions. His upcoming book The End Of The World Is Just The Beginning is set to be an absolutely invaluable addition to his excellent work. In what is an intensely though-provoking and painfully realistic assessment of the war in Ukraine, Peter pulls no punches in laying out where we currently stand, why we are where we are, and the many painful roads the world may well travel from here in the weeks and months to come. This conversation isn't for the faint of heart, but Peter's understanding of the range of outcomes available to us is incredibly valuable at what is shaping up to be a pivotal time for mankind in so many ways.
