Show Notes: Jack Levy spent a year before college studying Judaic Studies and Talmudic studies in the Old City of Jerusalem. During his time in Harvard, he became particularly interested in Israel, as he had grown up with a strong Jewish background. He received a Raoul Wallenberg fellowship, funded by Fred Schwartz, to go to Hebrew University for a year after college during which he interned for Knesset member Naomi Hazan and worked for the Association for Civil Rights in Israel. From Columbia Law School to Venture Capital After Israel, Jack went to Columbia Law School. He worked one summer as a human rights lawyer and later worked for Wall Street firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher to pay off his debt. He chose that law firm based on their Israeli clients and had a great experience with a mentor named Peter Jakes. During his time at law school, Jack met his wife, Dahlia. They settled in New York for a while before moving to Israel. Jack worked at Willkie before transitioning to Register.com, an internet company. In 1999, the internet was booming. Jack spent four years as General Counsel of Register during the the .com boom. In 2003, they moved to Ra'anana, Israel, a suburb of Tel Aviv, and have raised their three children there. Jack practiced law briefly in Israel before becoming a venture capitalist in 2006. He was the first to raise the banner of cleantech or climate tech in Israel in 2006 and 2007, thanks to Harvard classmate Sanjay Wagle. The Israeli Experience after October 7 Life changed for all Israelis and Palestinians in the wake of the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. All of the Jack's children serve in the military, and the community has experienced losses. The country came under attack by Hamas, led by Yahia Sinuar, and immediately followed by Hezbolla in the north. The October 7 attack resulted in horrific violence, crimes, destruction, rape, murder, and burning of people in the Southern Communities. Like many religiously observant Israelis, Jack and his family were in synagogue during the attack, when the rumors started to spread. Jack mentions that in the week prior to the attack he'd been on holiday in Jordan. Early in the morning of October 8, their best friends called to tell them that their 27-year-old son, Major Aryeh Ziering, had been killed by Hamas command naval commandos who had infiltrated Israel. Arey was an excellent fighter from the canine unit who had captured terrorists alongside some of the most elite forces during his service. He had gone to the United States to help train Navy SEALs with canine warfare. He was killed by 1pm that day.The next day, other friends found out that their son Hirsch had been kidnapped into Gaza, which ended with tragedy about a month ago when he was killed by Hamas. By the end of the first day, they had one friend whose son had been killed as a fighter, one friend who had been captured from the Nova festival and held prisoner by Hamas, and another business partner who lost his cousin's child fighting that day as well. As the war continued in the coming months, their network of friends who experienced loss widened to include – one who lost their nephew in December fighting in Gaza, one whose daughter's boyfriend was killed pursuing a terrorist in the West Bank, and others who lost their lives in the conflict. The story of the heroism of those who fought for their lives and the lives of others is one that will be told for generations. As a 54-year-old Israeli father, Jack has three children who have been fighting in the war, Jack explains the extremely high cost to Israeli families who have children in the army. Jack states that the present generation is remarkable, and he wrote a piece in the Times of Israel about the little league team he had coached going to war. He still plays softball with his boys and realized that by December, every child he coached was fighting in the war. How Heroism Drives Soldiers Jack shares the lessons he learned about conflict and military training. He talks about the importance of respecting American military families. He reflects on the recent tragic death of a soldier who recorded a video of himself before going into Lebanon, expressing love for the person behind him. He believes that Americans of his generation don't understand the importance of military families and the sacrifices made by soldiers. He grew up during the reckoning with the Vietnam War through Oliver Stone movies, and grew up thinking war was primarily unjust or wrong. Jack explains that the men and women fighting are often the best, motivated, kind, and loving people. He identifies with pacifism but lives only because there are people willing to defend him. Civilian War Rooms in Action The state apparatus of defense along the Israeli border failed on October 7, allowing hordes to burst through the borders and kidnap hundreds. However, people jumped into action. People established civilian war rooms, where they could be proactive in helping house, shelter, build and support in multiple ways. After October 7, many communities accepted refugees from the north and south - similar to the Second Lebanon War – and many in Jack's community helped families who had moved into hotels in the Dead Sea area. A friend of Jack, who lost her nephew, set up a school in the Dead Sea area within four days. The community extended to raising money to buy better helmets and equipment for reservists. This community-building effort was remarkable and comforting. Gazan Civilians under Hamas Jack, a former human rights attorney, discusses the situation with civilians in Gaza and the ethical considerations surrounding the response. He believes that the destruction to Gaza is horrific and tragic, with 40,000 people killed, but the problem is that it is not 40,000 civilians. Recent reports state that 30,000 of those were Hamas fighters or their family members. Jack blames Hamas for the destruction, but also emphasizes the morality and the need not to damage one's own cause. He shares first-hand testimony from his son, who describes his experience as a surveillance unit officer in Khan Yunis. He encourages people from outside Israel to focus on being “pro peace” rather than being “pro Israel” or “pro Palestine”. The Tech Industry in Israel Jack, an investor and startup expert, discusses the impact of travel restrictions on the tech industry in Israel as the travel restrictions due to missile attacks from Hamas,  Hezbollah and Iran have been problematic for Israeli companies. Despite the obstacles, he notes that Israeli companies have been able to function during this period.  In addition, it is common with Israeli technology companies for the CEOs to relocate to New York, Silicon Valley, Boston, or Austin, while the tech teams remain in Israel. Jack believes that the war is not good for the Israeli economy and that it is clearly awful for the lives of Palestinians, South Lebanon residents, and even people in Tehran. He believes that the US needs to take a more muscular reaction to the situation and help the parties find a way to end the war. Influential Harvard Professors and Courses Jack discusses his experiences at Harvard, including courses taught by Stanley Hoffman, Michael Sandel, Louise Richardson, and others. He mentions his appreciation for Professor Stanley Hoffman's course Ethics and International Relations.  Jack was in touch recently with Professor Emeritus Michael Walzer of Princeton whose book he studied in that course and who had defended Israel's war against Hamas and Hezbollah but was critical of the alleged Israeli involvement in the Pager attack. Jack also mentions his love for Professor Michael Sandel, and Dame Louise Richardson, who was his junior faculty seminar professor when he was 21 and became his thesis advisor. She was a young professor who wrote a great book called What Terrorists Want, which became one of the most popular courses at Harvard after September 11. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Benjamin Shestakofsky, assistant professor of sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, to discuss his recent book Behind the Startup: How Venture Capital Shapes Work, Innovation, and Inequality. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on presidential polling, the Harris, Trump and RFK campaigns, the DOJ v. Google II, IRS funding, the GOP's government shutdown, Israel's slaughter of its own citizens on October 7, the murder of Aysenur Eygi, and the end of the “return the hostages” pretense for Israel, before listening in to Fox's suggestions for Trump ahead of tomorrow night's debate. Professor Benjamin Shestakofsky then joins, diving right into the rise of Venture Capitalism out of late 1970s/early ‘80s reforms that shifted economic and corporate power to financiers and investors, such as the opening of pensions to riskier assets and dropping capital gains taxation, pushing businesses to put a much greater emphasis on stock prices and the promise of immediate growth instead of production or sustainability. Next, Professor Shestakofsky tackles his time working within and researching the world of venture capital, giving some practical examples of the risky and unsustainable mentality that drives the industry, stepping back to walk through some of the extreme examples of the exploitation it relies on, including obscuring the failed promises of their technologies by relying en masse on low-wage human labor – be it in the Philippines or Las Vegas. Expanding on this, Benjamin walks Sam and Emma through the impact the VC revolution has had on undermining the quality of services and helping to spur the “enshittification” of the internet, before wrapping up with some alternatives to this Silicon Valley mentality and the policies that can be used to incentivize that change. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Trump flounder in the face of more legitimate sexual assault allegations and unpack his absurd statements on gender-affirming surgery… in schools, and his platforming (alongside much of the media) of the ridiculous Venezuelan gang story out of Colorado. They also discuss the progression of the Harris campaign and the state of polling ahead of the first presidential debate, and watch Dave Rubin, noted beneficiary of millions in Russian money, struggle with the concepts of taxation, wealth, and equality, plus, your IMs! The podcast episode features a conversation between Stewart Alsop III and his father, Stewart Alsop II, and their guest, Joe Schoendorf from Accel, a prominent venture capital firm. Joe shares his insights on the transition from the early PC computing industry to the rise of the internet and eventually to the AI revolution. They discuss factors like the creation of the cloud, AI, and other technological tools that have greatly accelerated the speed of innovation. The podcast also covers the history of Silicon Valley, the evolution of venture capital, and the roles of today's young CEOs in tech startups. Stories recalling specific incidents from Silicon Valley's history and influential personalities, like Mark Zuckerberg, are also shared. Timestamps 02:04 The Start of the Interview with Joe Schoendorf 02:40 The Journey into Venture Capitalism 04:04 The Story of Joe Schoendorf and Apple 05:28 The Evolution of the Computer Industry 11:07 The Transition from Instruments to Computers: Hewlett Packard 17:17 The Rise and Fall of Tech Giants 21:23 The Emergence of AI and the Future of Tech 26:17 Recognizing Patterns in Business 27:02 The Origin of Silicon Valley 27:10 The Story of William Shockley 32:14 The Impact of the Consciousness Revolution on the Computer Industry 35:06 The Evolution of Silicon Valley and the Role of AI 40:34 The Journey to Accel and the Facebook Investment Key Insights The Evolution of Silicon Valley and Venture Capital: The episode highlighted the historical context of Silicon Valley's evolution, emphasizing the shift from hardware and instruments to software and the internet. Joe Schoendorf shared anecdotes from his career to illustrate this transition, including his experiences with companies like HP and Apple. This reflects the broader trend of technological innovation driving economic and cultural shifts, underscoring the importance of adaptability and foresight in the tech industry. The Probabilistic Nature of AI Compared to Deterministic Computing: One of the central discussions revolved around the difference between traditional computing and AI. The past 50 years of computing were deterministic, where outcomes are predictable and repeatable. In contrast, AI is probabilistic, offering a different approach to problem-solving and innovation. This distinction underscores AI's potential to enhance personal agency through technology, promising a future where technology adapts to and learns from human behavior. The Importance of Young Talent in Shaping Technology's Future: Schoendorf pointed out that the key to predicting the future of technology lies in understanding where smart, young people choose to work. Unlike 20 years ago, when the aspiration was to work for established tech giants, today's talent is more inclined towards startups, especially in AI. This shift indicates a potential for significant disruption and the emergence of new leaders in the tech industry, as was seen in the transition from mainframes to personal computers and now to AI. The Role of the Cloud in Enabling AI: The conversation highlighted the cloud's pivotal role in AI's development. By providing a centralized repository of digital information that can be efficiently retrieved and processed, the cloud has made it possible to train AI systems in ways that were previously unattainable. This has led to rapid advancements in AI technology and its applications, signaling a new era of innovation driven by data accessibility and computational power. The Cyclical Nature of Technological Disruption and Leadership: Schoendorf reflected on the historical pattern where incumbents rarely survive major platform shifts, citing examples from the transitions from mainframes to minicomputers, and then to personal computers and the internet. This pattern suggests that the current AI revolution will likely give rise to new industry leaders, emphasizing the importance of innovation and adaptability in maintaining competitive advantage.

About Our Guest:Charles Hudson is a well-known figure in the Silicon Valley venture capital space. He is the founder and managing partner of Precursor Ventures, an early-stage venture capital firm. With over 26 years of experience in the industry, Charles has made a name for himself as a trusted investor and advisor to numerous successful startups. Summary:Charles Hudson, founder and managing partner of Precursor Ventures, shares his insights on venture capital and the process of investing in high-growth companies. He emphasizes the importance of investing in the right people and the challenges of evaluating early-stage startups. Charles also discusses the role of the board of directors and the impact of acquisitions on venture capitalists. Key Takeaways: Venture capital is a sub-branch of finance that aims to fund high-growth companies and help them achieve their full potential. The most important factor in investing is the founder's ability to turn their idea into reality. Venture capitalists aim to find outlier companies that can become worth hundreds of millions or billions of dollars. The role of the board of directors is to evaluate the performance of the CEO and provide guidance and support. The venture capital industry is slowly evolving to be more open and inclusive, but there is still progress to be made. Quotes: "I'm investing mostly in things that don't yet exist." - Charles Hudson "The more money you raise, the less fixated I am on the idea because money equals time." - Charles Hudson "Good boards can make you a better leader, a better CEO." - Charles Hudson "Sometimes good people pick bad ideas." - Charles Hudson "I want invest in companies that I think can become IPO candidates." - Charles Hudson Transcripton --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/lexib/message

Today I have the privilege of sitting down with my Dad, Ivan Gergel, again. My dad was born and raised in London where he went to medical school and became a psychiatrist. He then joined the pharmaceutical company GSK in developing new antidepressant drugs, famously some of the SSRIs we all are of course aware of today. This job took him to the US where he started our family with my Mom. Dad was responsible for the running of hundreds of clinical trials, directed R&D for various pharmaceutical companies, and personally led the development and approval of 14 new therapies such as Lexapro, Paxil, and Namenda that have had fantastic impacts on patient's lives. He currently is working in healthcare investing with new startup drug and device companies. Today, we will be discussing alternative careers in medicine, specifically because my Dad only practiced medicine for two years before switching over to Industry.___0:00 - Intro0:54 - Going Into Medicine5:37 - Specializing in Psychiatry8:58 - Why Leave Medicine?13:36 - Disliked Aspects of Clinical Medicine15:55 - Transitioning From Medicine and Second Thoughts23:54 - First Job in the Industry29:52 - Why Go Into Pharma?31:18 - Career Rundown in Pharma34:08 - Key Factors in Changing Careers35:52 - Leadership Lessons Learned by Leading 900 People42:51 - Advice for People to Navigate the Corporate World48:54 - Top 3 Important Decisions in Your Life?51:27 - Considering Other Careers53:56 - Why Change Into VC Now?58:35 - Advice to a High School Student1:00:52 - Common Bad Advice High School Students Receive1:04:16 - Are MBA's and Ph.D's Any Useful?1:07:57 - Characteristics of Someone Who Would Do Well in Corporations1:11:26 - What Do You Look For in a Person While Hiring Them?1:14:08 - Any New Life-Changing Habits in the Last 5 Years?1:16:15 - Closing Message1:18:00 - Outro___View the Show Notes Page for This Episode for transcript and more information: zhighley.com/podcast___Connect With ZachMain YouTube: @ZachHighley Newsletter: https://zhighley.com/newsletter/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/zachhighley/?hl=enWebsite: https://zhighley.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/zachhighleyLinkedln: https://www.linkedin.com/in/zach-highley-gergel-44763766/Business Inquiries: zachhighley@nebula.tv___Listen for FreeSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/23TvJdEBAJuW5WY1QHEc6A?si=cf65ae0abbaf46a4Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-zach-highley-show/id1666374777___Welcome to the Zach Highley Show, where we discuss personal growth and medicine to figure out how to improve our lives. The IO podcast with Sterling and Tyler features Andy Rachleff, the founder of Benchmark Capital and unicorn startup Wealthfront, and explores the intersection between investing and operating. Ratcliffe believes that finding product-market fit and being ambidextrous in finding new opportunities while optimizing existing ones is more important than being paranoid in either role. He also discusses the importance of learning from success and putting entrepreneurs first. Venture capitalist Bill Gurley emphasizes the importance of product market fit and finding an inflection point in technology to identify a non-consensus market that is desperate for a product. Rachleff admires investors Howard Marks, John Dora, and John Valentine, and considers Reed Hastings as an exemplary operator who makes asymmetric bets. The success of running a company or making investments is determined by the magnitude of success when you are right, and great CEOs must be like venture capitalists in adding businesses to their portfolio and betting the company through major development initiatives and acquisitions with a high chance of failure.Timestamps[00:00:00] Interview with Investor Operator Andy Rachleff[00:01:40] Investing vs. Operating Skills[00:03:32] Product Market Fit and the Art of Being Ambidextrous[00:05:41] From VC to Entrepreneur: How Wealthfront Was Born[00:09:41] Making Money & Taking Leaps of Faith in Non-Consensus Ventures[00:12:37] The History and Success of Benchmark's Equal Partnership Model[00:16:41] Insight on Product Market Fit with Andy Keen[00:19:03] Spotting Inflection Points: Technology Entrepreneurship and Venture Capitalism[00:20:22] Product Market Fit and the Thesis of Everything Going Wrong[00:22:51] Key Trait of Successful Entrepreneurs: Deep Understanding of Technology[00:27:07] Finding Desperate Customers for Startup Success[00:28:41] Why Great CEOs Layer New Businesses to Succeed[00:33:04] Best Startup for Asymmetric Bets Today?

Sam and Emma host Alexandra Scaggs, reporter for the Financial Times, to discuss the recent turmoil surrounding the Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on inflation, the FDIC's upcoming bank auctions, EPA water regulations, SCOTUS taking on a massive Shadow Docket case on trans rights, and South Carolina lawmakers proposing a death penalty for abortions, before diving into the incestuous dealmaking behind SVB's collapse. Alexandra Scaggs then joins as she walks Sam and Emma through the four central elements of Silicon Valley Bank's collapse, starting by assessing the rollback of the Dodd-Frank capital checks on banks with under $250 Billion in assets, which allowed SVB, the 16th biggest bank in the US, to completely undercapitalize without any awareness from regulators or the Federal Reserve. Next, Alexandra looks to the behind-the-scene shenanigans at SVB that kept them below the $250 Billion threshold, before turning to their relationship with depositors, making outlandish deals to get their clients to deposit well above the FDIC $250k insurance threshold. Bringing these various elements together, Scaggs explores how rumors of SVB's undercapitalization with the Fed's constant interest hikes were then spread to depositors, who made these losses official with en masse withdrawals during last Friday's bank run. Wrapping up the interview, Alexandra, Sam, and Emma tackle how endemic this particular failure was to the ideology of Silicon Valley, one that is grounded in cash-poor companies with promises of future profits, alongside the general culture of Big Tech. Sam, Emma, and the MR Crew also discuss the SVB collapse's relationship to the US' general failure of centralized planning. And in the Fun Half: Emma and Sam talk with Sterber from Idaho about the various disturbing bills coming out of the state, Sam eases Hamza from Utica's fears of a 2008-esque recession, and Newsmax brings on the post-Great-Recession gold hawks in the wake of SVB's collapse. They also summarize the Supreme Court's upcoming shadow docket case on trans civil rights, watch Judge Kyle Duncan throw an absolute hissy fit in front of Stanford students, and Cuomo turns to the anti-progressive AIPAC grift. Mike in Orange County expands on the culture of Venture Capitalism that led to the SVB collapse, and Amy from Nashville parses through the potential impact of various anti-trans bills coming out of Tennessee.
