We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2015 conversation with Bill Withers. ABOUT BILL WITHERSPop and R&B legend Bill Withers released nine albums between 1971 and 1985 that included such classic songs as “Lean on Me,” “Ain't No Sunshine,” “Grandma's Hands,” “Use Me,” “Lovely Day,” and “Just the Two of Us.” Though he stepped away from the limelight in the mid-1980s, his songs have become classics that have withstood the test of time and been covered by iconic artists including Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Gladys Knight, Garth Brooks, Willie Nelson, Paul McCartney, Ike & Tina Turner, Smokey Robinson, Al Green, The Staple Singers, Diana Ross, Neil Diamond, Sting, Linda Ronstadt, Roberta Flack, Buddy Guy, Barbra Streisand, and George Benson. Additionally, his music has been sampled by Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, L.L. Cool J, Tupac Shakur, and Kanye West. Withers was in the inaugural class of the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame, and is a nine-time Grammy nominee. He won three Grammy awards for Best R&B song for “Ain't No Sunshine” in 1971, “Just the Two of Us” in 1981, and the Club Nouveau cover of “Lean on Me” in 1987. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.

Back in season 1 (episode 9) of The Music List, the siblings argued, persuaded, cut deals, and finally settled on the top 5 female R&B vocalists of the 20th century. In season 2 (episode 9), the TML siblings decided on a top five list of the best male R&B vocalists during the same period. In this special bonus episode, The Music List takes the list of those 10 absolute R&B legends, and assumes the unenviable task of removing five of them from the master list. To up the ante, the siblings then have to rank the top five. Listen in as last week's argument spills over into this bonus episode!

You're listening to the Whitney Soul Podcast, and I'm your host, Gail Nobles. Today's topic: Another Heartbreak (Another Hotel). First, it was MJ. Then it was Whitney, and this is a podcast intro.(Music)That was just an intro for the show but Whitney Houston had a heartbreak hotel song of her own to sing with Faith Evans and Kelly Price. To hear it, you can listen on Spotify and YouTube. The song was released as the second single from Houston's 1998 album, My Love Is Your Love. Whitney also had sung a little bit of Jackson's version of Heartbreak Hotel live in concert back in 1999. She was awesome. She could throw down on some Michael Jackson songs. I'm wondering did Michael say anything to her about it. And he should of made a record with Whitney. But it didn't happen. It's good to know that they were friends. Two gifted people. However, Whitney Houston never tried to be anyone else in singing. She said, “ I got my licks from my mom. My mother, Cissy Houston. … So when everyone tries to figure out who I sound like, I don't sound like anyone apart from my mother.” And so, singing her own version of Heartbreak Hotel, the song reached number two on the US Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart on Feb. 2, 1999. Heartbreak Hotel was certified Platinum by RIAA. It was also a hit in many countries worldwide. The song received two nominations at the 2000 Grammy Awards for the Best R&B song and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The video was nominated for Best R&B Video at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards. We got a Whitney Houston story. We got another version of another heartbreak of another hotel written down in music history. (music podcast theme)Another Heartbreak (Another Hotel) by Gail Nobles.
