I rank the top R&B Albums that I heard in 2022. Tory Lanez vs Megan Thee Stallion. Stephen Curry out at least 2 weeks with a shoulder injury. Did Gunna rat on Young Thug and YSL? Lonzo Ball will miss the entire 2023 season. An NBA exec thinks that the Warriors will trade Johnathan Kuminga or James Wiseman. We had the pleasure of interviewing Zyah Belle over Zoom video. When you know yourself, nothing can stop you… Zyah Belle both realizes and understands her power as a singer, songwriter, producer, and arranger. She's reached this realization through a tireless grind, going from countless open mics and gigs at dimly lit bars in Northern California to collaborating with some of the most celebrated icons in history. At the same time, she's also grown into an uncompromising and undeniable solo artist in her own right with widespread critical acclaim and millions of streams. Hailing from the small town of Vallejo, CA, she initially discovered music in church. Mom served as the choir director, so Zyah participated in children's choir as soon as she could. Inspired by her two older sisters, she simultaneously developed a passion for R&B. Raised by a single mother and her siblings, she found herself surrounded by “powerful women.”Among many highlights, she co-wrote and collaborated with Snoop Dogg on “Trouble,” which served as the end credits song for Dog Gone Trouble on NETFLIX. She lent her voice to Terrace Martin's “Never Saw It Coming” [feat. Zyah Belle & Problem] in addition to Too $hort's “I Stay Up” and “Get Top.” Recording and performing with Kanye West's Sunday Service Choir, her voice boomed on chart-topping #1 releases such as ye and Jesus Is King. The latter even earned “Top Christian Album” and “Top Gospel Album” at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards and “Best Contemporary Christian Music Album” at the 2021 GRAMMY® Awards. Following New Levels [2016] and IX [2019], Zyah's 2021 Who's Listening Anyway EP racked up millions of streams and incited widespread critical acclaim. Vibe touted it on “The 21 Best R&;B Albums of 2021” and went on to declare, “Belle is able to fold the styles of Erykah Badu's melodic rawness, Anderson .Paak's wittiness, and the essence of ‘90s neo-soul into a terse seven-track body of work.” Working with the likes of Hollywood Cole, Sam Barsh, and PBnJ, she levels up yet again on Yam Grier. Cut at the legendary Doghouse Studio in Los Angeles, she strikes a balance between 21 st century soul and classic seventies spirit—suggested by the title Yam Grier. We want to hear from you! Perhaps more than any other musician mentioned below, The Weeknd blurs the lines between R&B and pop. When he launched his career, he quickly established himself as one of the most exciting new names in the R&B genre, but his last album and his most recent singles could be described perfectly as pop, even if Billboard counted the era largely as R&B. The Weeknd is one of several acts who are classified by many in the music industry as R&B, though what that means these days is unclear. Either way, they're making excellent art, and there's hopefully a lot more of it coming in 2022. While he hasn't explicitly confirmed that his new album is called The Dawn Is Coming, The Weeknd has dropped enough hints that some fans have started using the title regularly. After enjoying unprecedented global success with his full-length After Hours, it seems the Canadian musician is sticking with a similar sound for what will be his fifth full-length. Lead single “Take My Breath” is more of the same ‘80s-leaning electro-pop that people can't seem to get enough of, as the tune bolted right into the top 10 on various charts all around the world. Apparently, The Weeknd's new album is already done, but he's not sharing it just yet. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/masseffect/support

Snoh Aalegra has officially entered her purple era. Her new album TEMPORARY HIGHS IN THE VIOLET SKIES was released Friday (July 9), complete with two Tyler, the Creator collaborations among 15 passionate tracks. A cover picture of Aalegra shows her irises painted purple. The Swedish singer's new release marks her third studio album and comes two years after her sophomore album, Ugh, those feels again, peaked at No. 73 on the Billboard 200 and No. 6 on the Top R&B Albums chart. Two of the album's singles were Adult R&B Airplay chart hits: “I Want You Around” was No. 1 for two weeks, while “Whoa,” featuring Pharrell, reached No. 2. The new record's 15 songs range from smooth, soulful R&B to faster beats like “Neon Peach,” which finds Aalegra quipping back and forth with Tyler, the Creator over the faults they each bring to a relationship. On “In the Moment,” Aalegra and Tyler apologize to one another over some laidback drums and synths, and James Fauntleroy also makes a smooth appearance for “On My Mind.” Aalegra worked with a number of producers for TEMPORARY HIGHS IN THE VIOLET SKIES, including No ID, The Neptunes, Mellodust, Sensei Bueno, Joel Compass, Doctor O and, of course, Tyler. The release of the new record has a lot of fans happy — including Alicia Keys. The “Girl on Fire” singer encouraged her followers to listen to her “sis” Aalegra's new album. The Starting 5 discuss their all-time favorite R&B albums.
Over the last decade, oddCouple has supplanted himself as a staple in Chicago music. Producing for, and collaborating with artists such as Chance The Rapper, Joey Purp, Noname, Saba, to name a few — the savvy composer has created a sound as unique as his persona. In 2016, he released his debut LP, Liberation, to an overwhelmingly positive critical and fan reception. The project was described as "a varied affair with jazz, gospel, neo-soul, trap, boom-bap, traditional R&B, and blues oscillating in energy." That same year, oddCouple served as executive producer for Jamila Woods' debut album, HEAVN — hailed as one of the “50 Best Albums of 2016” by Pitchfork and NPR Music, and one of Rolling Stone's “20 Best R&B Albums of 2016”. With standout production on Jamila Woods' newest album, Legacy Legacy, the Milwaukee native continues to churn out lush production as he works on his forthcoming LP, Reflections. During the creative process of Reflections, the producer/DJ has expanded his musical vision with several brands and companies, including his latest role as Musical Director for Oprah Winfrey's 2020 Vision Tour and her 2021 event “Your Life In Focus: Be the Love You Need" Equally skilled as a performer, oddCouple's live expression mixes instrumentation, vocals, and composed elements with electronic drums and DJ scratching — bringing the energy of his studio work to the stage. Headlining and playing venues from Chicago to LA, some of his most notable performances include FOX32's “Good Day Chicago”, Mamby at The Beach, Summerfest, the 2017 MLS All-Star Game Concert, West Fest 2018, and Logan Square Arts Festival. Blowout Comb is the second studio album by American hip hop group Digable Planets, released October 18, 1994, on Pendulum/EMI Records. The album was written and recorded in Brooklyn, New York, where the group moved, with recording sessions beginning in 1993 and finishing in 1994. On Blowout Comb, Digable Planets abandoned the radio friendly style of their debut album and worked with a more ambitious, stripped-down sound. The album features a diverse range of samples and live instruments, and contains lyrical themes of the inner city and black nationalism.[1] It also features guest appearances from Guru of Gang Starr, Jeru the Damaja, and DJ Jazzy Joyce.Upon its release, Blowout Comb received minimal label support, and virtually no pre-release publicity.[2] It peaked at number 32 on the Billboard 200, and number 13 on the Top R&B Albums, making it a commercial failure. It featured the singles "9th wonder" and "Dial 7", which also did not chart well, and failed to match the success of the group's previous singles. Several music writers have attributed this lack of chart and sales success to the album's afrocentric content, and un-polished tone. Shortly after the release of Blowout Comb, Digable Planets broke up due to creative differences and displeasure with the music industry.Although the album did not achieve commercial success, and received very little attention at the time of its release, Blowout Comb received generally greater acclaim amongst music critics and writers than the group's debut Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space). It has been noted for its seamless production and has been described as a "textured soundscape of a mythical world of rhymes, jazz and urban ambiance."[3] Blowout Comb is often regarded as Digable Planets' best album, and has gained an underground following in later years.[4] In 2013, it was reissued on vinyl LP by Light in the Attic Records.

Planet Patrol - Play At Your Own Risk Edit By Petko Turner Planet Patrol is an American electro group originating in the 1980s. The members were Arthur Baker, John Robie, and a quintet of vocalists led by Herbert J. Jackson: lead singer Joseph Lites, Rodney Butler, Michael Anthony Jones, and the late Melvin Franklin. The group only produced a single album, the self-titled Planet Patrol in 1983, which peaked at #64 on the Billboard R&B Albums chart. The group's most popular song, "Play at Your Own Risk", was created from tracks that did not make the final version of Afrika Bambaataa's seminal "Planet Rock". Download for free on The Artist Union
