Donald Trump has made no secret of his great admiration for Fox News—he tweets praise of it constantly—and his disdain for other, “fake news” outlets, which he regards as “enemies of the people.” But the closeness between Fox News and the White House is unprecedented in modern times, Jane Mayer tells David Remnick. In a recent article, Mayer, a staff writer since 1995, analyzes a symbiotic relationship that boosts both Trump’s poll numbers and Rupert Murdoch’s bottom line. “I was trying to figure out who sets the tune that everybody plays during the course of the day,” Mayer says. “If the news on Fox is all about some kind of caravan of immigrants supposedly invading America, whose idea is that? It turns out that it is this continual feedback loop.” Mayer pays particular attention to the role of Bill Shine, the former Fox News co-president and now former White House deputy chief of staff for communications. Shine resigned days after Mayer spoke to Remnick. In his tenure in the Administration, Shine helped create a revolving door through which those who craft the Administration’s political messaging and those who broadcast it regularly trade places. She also discovered that Shine was linked to the network’s practice of intimidating employees who alleged sexual harassment at work.

Trump’s actions as President are obvious indications of his overall behavior and intentions. Trump’s past dealing are also obvious indicators on how he conducts himself as president. All of this will be meaningless if Trump doesn’t end up in jail. Impeachment alone could be considered a victory for Trump. The very survival of our democracy is predicated on Trump going to jail, preferably for life. We let Nixon walk, and now we have Trump because of it. If Trump knew ahead of time that criminal behavior in office would land him in jail, he would have never run in the first place. This country needs to send a very clear message on this issue: Without exception, if you commit a serious crime while in office, you go to jail?—?period. When, exactly, did this country decide that the greater your office and responsibility, the less you should be held accountable for your actions? Rather than people like the president and police officers, etc, being held to a higher standard, they are held to a lesser one. Like Nixon, Trump seems to think that since he occupies the highest office in the land, he should be held to the lowest standard of conduct and accountability. This notion is patently antithetical to the very idea of equal justice under the law. If Trump escapes justice, than the promise and ideals of this nation will be permanently rendered moot.

Vox's Ezra Klein has some strong words for Brian Stelter about the choices newsrooms make. He wonders why President Trump's comments at rallies receive so much attention. He also sounds off on the appointment of Bill Shine and the media's framing of Trump's poll numbers. "One of the hard things that we do badly in journalism," he says, is "that we don't make clear to our audience what is our counterfactual... what is the other option."

Shine was ousted from Fox News last May over the network's handling of sexual harassment cases under Roger Ailes. His new job as head of White House communications is in some ways perfect and in many ways shocking.
Before the viral hashtag #MeToo, before the revelations against Harvey Weinstein and other media giants… there was Gretchen Carlson. Back in 2016, Carlson filed a landmark lawsuit against Fox News CEO Roger Ailes, beginning a wave of sexual harassment allegations at the network. Eventually Ailes was forced out, along with other Fox News big wigs, like Bill O’Reilly and Fox co-president Bill Shine. But at the time, Carlson was a solitary voice against one of the most powerful men in media. In this interview with the former Fox News anchor, POLITICO's Anna Palmer talks with Carlson about that "lonely, fearful" time, her advice for women in the workplace, her winding career path, and what's next for the pageant queen-turned-journalist-turned-women's empowerment advocate.
Sean Hannity took to Twitter Thursday to defend embattled Fox News co-president Bill Shine following a report that suggested Shineâ??s future with the network could be on unsteady ground. â??Gäbe i pray this is NOT true because if it is, thatâ??s the total end of the FNC as we know it. Done. Best Sean,â?? Hannity tweeted, with a link to Gabe Shermanâ??s New York magazine story citing unnamed sources who claimed that Shine has become worried about what he perceives as lack of public support for him from 21st Century Fox leaders Rupert, Lachlan and James Murdoch. Hannity then apologized for inserting a diaeresis into Shermanâ??s name, writing, â??Ha. Gabe sorry about the 2 dots. I couldnâ??t do that again if I tried. Best Sean.â?? Hannity and Shine have a long history at the 21st Century Fox-owned cable-news outlet. Hannity recommended that Fox News hire Shine early in the networkâ??s history, and Shine was an early producer on â??Hannity & Colmes,â?? one of the first primetime programs on the networkâ??s schedule. Hannity also claimed that Shine was was the victim of an internal fox News plot to undermine his leadership, tweeting, â??Somebody HIGH UP AND INSIDE FNC is trying to get an innocent person fired. And Gabe I KNOW WHO it is. Best Sean.â?? He followed up by tweeting #istandwithbill. When other Twitter users expressed confusion as to whether Hannity was supporting Shine or recently departed Fox News host Bill Oâ??Reilly, Hannity tweeted again, â??Iâ??ll change it. #Istandwithshine.â?? A Fox News spokesperson declined to comment on Hannityâ??s Twitter activity. Fox News thinks it can make all its problems go away by hiring a female CEO. Sean Hannity is fighting to keep his one time producer now co-President Bill Shine, but the Murdoch boys are "quietly" looking for his female replacement. Who would last in that job and what do the Murdochs want out of it? Public floggings of male employees? Fox is under attack because it's a successful conservative outlet - for now. Last week the left was after Hannity and Jesse Watters to quit. Does a female CEO make that go away? Our grades for the first 100 days - for the media that is. Hundreds of millions are spent to trash Trump politically. A fraction of that is spent to attack the media, but Trump still beats the media. What's the sense of the media Agonizing over Trump's approval ratings when theirs are worse? A 25-year old and Ja Rule concocted a destination music festival - in the Bahamas - for millionaires to mingle with girls in bikinis and top musical acts. It's called Fyre Festival. What could go wrong? Everything went wrong. Instead of gourmet meals the guests were given cheese sandwiches and instead of top accommodations they spent their nights in tent cities on the beach. The organizers say they learned their lesson and will be better prepared "next year." Oh yeah? LIVE SATURDAY 7AM PST/10AM EST. The Original and Classic Gang of 405!
