Send us a textWhat if the thin line between law and chaos was a daily path you had to walk? We take you back to the wild streets of 1873 Ellsworth, Kansas, where every choice could make or break a gambler's fortune. This is the poignant tale of Chauncey "Cap" Belden Whitney, a respected lawman and skilled scout known for his steadfast commitment to justice in the turbulent American frontier. Whitney, a prominent figure in his community, notably participated in the intense and storied Battle of Beecher Island in 1868. This event solidified his reputation as a courageous defender of settlers. In 1871, he was appointed sheriff of Ellsworth County, where he earned accolades for his unwavering dedication to law enforcement and ability to maintain order in a lawless region. The tragic turn occurred one fateful evening when Billy Thompson, a brash and impulsive frontiersman, sought to stir trouble over a heated card game. Thompson, known as the brother of the notorious Ben Thompson, was determined to escalate tensions. As voices rose and the atmosphere charged, Whitney stepped in to quell the brewing confrontation, prioritizing peace and the safety of those around him. Tragically, in a sudden act of violence, Thompson drew a double-barreled shotgun and fatally shot Whitney, cutting short the life of a man who had devoted himself to protecting others in a perilous time. Whitney's death sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the ever-present dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the Wild West.Support the show

From The Retreat website: "The Retreat was born in 1989 out of frustration at the way the human race treats animals. A rescue centre which would save tormented, abused, sick, injured and unwanted animals from certain death was therefore founded. Some of our residents include: ex-race horses, ex-riding school ponies, injured live export sheep, cows saved from slaughter, ex-petting farm goats, injured birds, ferrets, Christmas turkeys, worn-out battery hens, disabled non-releasable wildlife, fish, small domestics, old or feral and FIV cats, and dogs who have failed behaviour tests in other dog homes. We offer specialised care for the animals who we take in. We are a not-for-profit organisation and all the Trustees and most of the volunteers being vegan. All funds raised go to the welfare of the animals, being cared for. We also use the funds for The Retreat's facilities and where possible, animals are re-homed in permanent, loving homes. The Retreat operates a genuine no-kill policy. Our site accommodates our main rescue centre and, wildlife hospital to deal with most animal intakes and emergencies, together with our permanent horses, cows and sheep residents. We now have ample room to care for more animals, our intensive and equine re-homing centre, along with care-for-life wildlife and exotics. The number of animals being cared for by The Retreat is over 1,000 at any one time." Imagine being swept off your feet by a compelling job offer in a bustling Western saloon, finding yourself captivated by an enchanting dancer who's not just a pretty face but also a woman of substance. That's precisely the unexpected turn Bat Mastersons life took when I crossed paths with Billy Thompson, his partner Harry Fleming, and the bewitching Libby at the Lady Gay. This episode will transport you back to an era of dancehall girls, cards, and liquor, where Bat Masterson navigates his newfound environment under the intoxicating presence of Molly Brennan while running the Farrow Table. But hold onto your hats, because the ride's just beginning. The dancehall's not just about music and mirth; there's more than meets the eye. Listen as Molly Brennan, a survivor and dancehall girl, unfolds a tale of intrigue and murder that newspaper headlines failed to capture. The assassination of Phil Cole was no ordinary crime, and Molly's whispered confession provides a chilling twist that will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about Wild Bill Hickok. As I share my surprising revelation, we'll delve into the truth, unmasking the rugged reality of life in the West. It's hard to believe a 2-time All-Big 10 safety who was a part of four Rose Bowls and two Super Bowls didn't have football on his radar until high school. Mike Harden loved track growing up and his speed was impressive. So much so, when he was in 9th grade, his track coach (who was also an assistant football coach at the high school) had him run for the head football coach. It took two 40-yard dashes for the coach to proclaim Mike was his new starting free safety. He learned the game quick and by the end of high school had multiple big-name schools knocking on his door. He chose Michigan where he turned heads on the football field and graduated with a Political Science and Communications degree. He wouldn't need the degree for a while because the Broncos drafted him in 1980 and Mike found himself in a defensive backfield with Louis Wright, Billy Thompson and Steve Foley. For 9 seasons he taunted Broncos opponents at cornerback, safety and free safety racking up 33 interceptions, 4 touchdowns and 11 fumble recoveries. In 1989, he was cut and picked up by the Raiders where he had 5 picks and 3 fumble recoveries over 2 seasons. Mike's body told him it was time to be done after the 1990 season and he tried a variety of professions including the restaurant business and real estate. He also started to live a little too large and got into legal trouble for fraud. While serving time in a halfway house, Mike realized he needed to head in a different direction. He got his master's degree and for 8 years counseled people dealing with addition at the Serenity at Stout Street Foundation. He's completely retired now and serves on the board of the Denver Broncos Alumni Association.

In local news, a new traffic pattern has been installed at an intersection that leads to Boone Greenway, Rec Center. According to the Watauga Democrat, this will go into effect today, March 6th, at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Street and Farm Road. Left turns are permitted at this intersection between 4pm and 6pm to protect the safety of drivers and pedestrians, according to the town of Boone. Boone also stated that the new traffic pattern should help improve the flow of traffic on Martin Luther King Jr. Street and the neighborhoods around that area. In state news, a popular rolling skating rink in Lowell, North Carolina closes on March 5, 2023. According to the Charlotte Observer, this rink has been open for over 40 years, but has decided to shut down, according to the owner, Billy Thompson. Thompson announces on FaceBook, “Announcing the LAST ROLL. After 40+ incredible years at our Lowell Location, it is with heavy hearts that we announce it's closing.” Thompson discusses the challenges his business has faced, including the forced shut down during COVID. This location will move over to its Hudson rink at Union Road and Hudson Boulevard in Gastonia. In national news, another Norfolk Southern train derailed in Ohio, on Saturday evening in Springfield, Ohio. According to NPR, It caused 28 cars to slide diagonally across the tracks, but no one was injured, according to several state and local agencies. This crash makes this rail line its second major derailment in just over one month. This brings into question the environmental and public health in nearby East Palestine when a train that was carrying toxic chemicals derailed on February 3rd. However, this car was not carrying any toxic materials and does not pose a threat to the community, officials stated.

Thompson Tee create sweat proof and premium undershirts that block 100% of underarm sweat and odour with patented Hydro-Shield sweatproof technology. Billy had axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating) and would practice ridiculous deodorant rituals to conceal his underarm sweat marks. In 2011, he approached friend Randy Choi, who had experience working in the apparel industry. Billy learned that he too, could relate to the struggles of excessive sweating. Randy, who suffered from cranial hyperhidrosis as a teen, underwent sweat gland removal surgery, only to end up with severe side effects which included all-over sweating, skin problems, slow metabolism and fatigue as a result. Bound by a shared passion to create a safe, affordable and convenient solution, they both developed a lightweight, breathable, comfortable and truly integrated underarm barrier that would completely absorb sweat, withstand the toughest stains, and help those living with axillary hyperhidrosis. In this episode of the MenswearStyle Podcast we interview Billy Thompson, Founder of Thompson Tee about axillary hyperhidrosis and the founding story of his brand which has sold over million shirts in 10 years. Our host Peter Brooker and Billy talk about undershirt trends in the US vs UK, bootstrapping, production, Shark Tank, patented sweatproof technology, how to combat copycat businesses, and being featured on TV. From 1976 to 1982, the Denver Broncos featured a 3-4 defense, nicknamed the Orange Crush, that was as good a defensive unit as the NFL has ever experienced. A hard hitting, fearless crew from front to back, the Orange Crush starred football legends including Lyle Alzado, Randy Gradishar, Tom Jackson, Louis Wright and Billy Thompson. Wild West Podcast proudly presents "Texas Billy and Squirrel Tooth Alice." This true story begins in Abilene, Kansas, when Billy Thompson arrives after a long cattle drive from San Antonio, Texas. Billy Thompson, known as "Texas Billy," decides to take in an evening of entertainment and meets up with Elizabeth Haley, a young lady of 15 who has chosen a dancehall life. A relationship builds between them, and Billy helps run the Bull's Head Saloon, co-owned by his brother Ben Thompson and Phil Cole. However, after a gunfight ensues between Bill Hickok and Phil Cole leaving Cole, dead Billy leaves Abilene on a cattle drive back to Oklahoma. Elizabeth and Billy soon join up with Ben Thompson, Texas Billy's brother in Ellsworth, Kansas. However, the story spins out of control after Billy Thompson is arrested on June 30, 1873, by John Morco for carrying a weapon in town limits. Soon after Billy's arrest, a disagreement breaks out between Marco and Billy Thompson, leaving Sheriff Chancey Whitney dead in the streets of Ellsworth, Kansas. The story written by Mike King provides the actual accounts of a twenty-five-year relationship between a gambler and a well-known prostitute as they travel through Dodge City and into a new settlement named Hide Town, Mobeetie, Texas, where Bat Masterson is shot.

Co-founder and president of Thompson Tee, Billy Thompson, reveals why he stepped away from systems like Magento, QuickBooks and Brightpearl and decided to implement Oracle NetSuite. Thompson begins by telling us a bit about Thompson Tee and why he founded the company (2:10). He goes on to explain the challenges the business faced in launching its first ecommerce website in 2012 (11:52) and, more specifically, the obstacles the team ran into using Magento as a smaller organization (16:11). Thompson decided to implement Brightpearl as a solution to Magento, but even more challenges arose in “duct taping” (as he puts it) the system to QuickBooks (20:11). He recalls a myriad of issues around data redundancies (21:44) and in managing inventory and the supply chain (24:36). Thompson explains why he decided to implement NetSuite as a solution to these challenges (27:19) and recalls some of the immediate benefits of the implementation (33:40). Thompson then describes how NetSuite helps him make better business decisions (43:15), especially in adapting around COVID-19 (44:35). He concludes with the overall impact NetSuite has had on the business (52:31) and where Thompson Tee is headed in the future (55:21).
