Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Monday, Nov. 11, 2024. Young hunters in West Virginia learn firearms safety, ethical hunting practices and personal responsibility in the great outdoors, thanks to DNR police officers…the WV Regional Technology Park helps boost the area's STEM industry…and, WANTED: Your proposals for Bridging Innovation Week…on today's daily304.   #1 – From BLUEFIELD DAILY TELEGRAPH – The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources has announced that police officers from its law enforcement section trained and assisted 43 young hunters during the state's antlerless deer season for youth as part of the agency's ongoing initiative to recruit new hunters to the sport. During the hunts, WVDNR Police officers from each of the agency's six districts taught special needs, underprivileged and community youth about firearms safety, ethical hunting practices and personal responsibility in the outdoors. Youth hunts are a key component of the WVDNR's Law Enforcement Section efforts to promote responsible hunting and conservation education. In September, the agency earned the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies' Conservation Law Enforcement Award for excellence in public relations and youth outreach. West Virginia Regional Technology Park Executive Director Matt Ballard said the park's main mission centers on economic development, which it achieves in part by providing its tenants with a safe and valued campus that allows them to grow. Ballard said they're focusing primarily on STEM industries and recruiting in those areas, which is important to help create a skilled workforce of people living and spending money here. This past spring, Gov. Jim Justice announced a $250 million consolidated laboratory facility, which is predicted to be built in the tech park and finished in 2027. The facility will hold the labs for the Department of Health's Office of Laboratory Services, the Division of Labor's Office of Weights and Measures, the West Virginia State Police and the Department of Homeland Security forensics lab and the state Medical Examiner labs. The weeklong symposium advances entrepreneurship-led economic development by providing connection and education to business owners, current and prospective entrepreneurs, and entrepreneur support organizations (ESOs) throughout West Virginia. Proposals are due by Saturday, November 30.  The next Bridging Innovation Week is set for the week of April 29, 2025. In the late 90s, hackers who discovered vulnerabilities would sometimes send an email to Bugtraq with details. Bugtraq was a notification system used by people with an interest in network security. It was also a place that might have been monitored by employees of software companies looking for reports of vulnerabilities pertaining to their software. The problem was - there wasn't an easy way to track specific vulnerabilities in specific products.  It was May 1999. Larry Cashdollar was working as a system administrator for Bath Iron Works under contract by Computer Sciences Corporation. Specifically, he was a UNIX Systems Administrator, level one. His team managed over 3,000 UNIX systems across BIW's campuses. Most of these were CAD systems used for designing AEGIS class destroyers. This position gave me access to over 3,000 various flavors of UNIX ranging from Sun Solaris to IBM AIX. We move on to talk about how Todd became the person he is today, and like many people of impact, his journey was one of trials and challenges. As an athlete at the peak of his career, he was injured and with three herniated discs, spinal stenosis and degenerative back disease he had to give up on his dream and stop playing professional football in Europe. Todd’s journey back to wellness was not just the physical aspect of rehabbing from the serious injury, it also included going through a lot of meditation, Yoga and was the introduction of Todd getting in touch with the gentler side of recovery, including Zen body therapy and Feldenkrais movement therapy. This took Todd to another side of fitness which he had not been accustomed to as an athlete. He realized that there was another side to performance especially at a high, high level that was different to just doing power cleans, and bench presses - the things that were often equated to high performance as an athlete. It was at this moment Todd realized that if he really wanted to tip the iceberg and get the top, that he was going to have to marry the modalities of traditional strength and conditioning with the inner wisdom of the body. We talk a lot about Todd’s faith and how has always been determined to be his true self and he has always understood that it is okay to be different. He encourages us all to not be like everybody else. Todd believes that each of us has different gifts that we've been blessed with and that it's our opportunity and responsibility to make sure that we share that in the most, most authentic way. We move the conversation to the challenge of facing our fear and Todd suggests we simply “get over it.” With a smile, he reminds us that he too has fear all the time and but it is also a sign. To Todd, fear is an opportunity and the day he doesn't have fear or feel a bit of anxiety is the day he will step out of the industry. Todd believes that what is important is the quiet time as it is here where you can discover what you are BIW in? What are you best in the world at? What are you great at? And when you really honor and stay true to that - it allows you to be the best at your unique gift. It is here where you are going to attract who you're supposed to attract and do your best work. When asked about how to move forward Todd replies, "by getting more time away from what you are trying to move forward to." He goes on to say that when we step away from the minutia of all that we are working on - we get a lot of big ideas – which is called vision. Todd believes that if we're always in the weeds doing the work that we love to do, we often forget about the vision. The harder you work the harder your recovery needs to be. Todd talks about the importance of planning and also having systems in place that can support that plan. He encourages us to constantly be writing down and planning our goals. Todd has a specific system that's called an annual roadmap along with an ongoing strategic plan, and he encourages us all to get really clear on our long and short term goals. He brings up a great point and that is that most of us have two to three hours a day, that he calls swing hours. Those swing hours could go to either watching Netflix or TV or doing something important. He encourages us to design our ideal week, to know when our peak productivity cycles are in any given day and then create blocks of time around our peak productivity cycles where we get to do our best work. We move on to talk about Todd’s recent knee surgery and he believes that this was one of the greatest blessings as it forced him to get still and get clear. It also made him realize that it was time for some changes in his business so that he could reach more people without burning out. By stepping back and slowing down, he realized he needed to build a schedule that would allow him to be in a creative mode more often. I ask Todd about his thoughts on why we often have a difficult time charging our worth and I loved his answer. Todd views money as energy. “It comes in and goes like energy. You have to attract energy. You have to attract money. When you attract money and if you attract it and hold on to it, you block energy and that blocks it. If you keep it circulatory and keep it moving and investing in good things and giving back, it's going to come back to you 10 fold. But the minute you hold on you will have energy blocks. So when you asked me about my energy, even with money, it's changed a lot and I'm always affirming myself. I am deserving of attracting it, manifesting it, giving it back to new great things and to other people. And that's how I've shifted. And I know there's a lot of people that may be listening in today, money is just a form of energy and that you are deserving.” We close the conversation by touching on Todd’s morning ritual. For him, it's imperative to get his mind right and to get his mind ticking and operating at the highest level. Todd typically spends about an hour each morning to prepare, this consists of quiet time, some reading and a workout. Todd also reminds us to listen to the whispers and so as you come to the end of the show, be sure to take the quiet time and listen to your whispers. Then write down your dream goals and create a strategic plan which will set you up to take action and for success.

Producer/Host: Amy Browne Studio Engineer: John Greenman Opposition to Maine Taxpayers Funding “Corporate Welfare” for Military Contractor General Dynamics In February we reported on a proposal to give a $60 million tax break to Bath Iron Works at the expense of Maine taxpayers. Those who support the measure say it protects jobs, but those who oppose it see it as corporate welfare for defense contractor General Dynamics, the company that owns BIW. Today we follow up with some of the activists involved in the issue, including Bruce Gagnon who was with us last month, as well as Bob Klotz and Lisa Savage. We’re also joined by Alex Nunes, an investigative reporter at nunesweekly.com. He has exposed details about what is going on behind the scenes of this deal. Columnist Lawrence Reichard, joins us in the studio. He's covered the issue in his weekly column “Bricks and Mortars” which runs in the Waldo County based Republican Journal and the Coastal Journal in Bath. Later in the program we check in with Jessica Stewart, one of 3 women who were arrested at Senator Collin’s office last December where they were protesting her support of the tax bill. They are heading to federal court tomorrow. Note: Activist Mark Roman was scheduled to be with us but was unable to join us due to technical difficulties. He sent the following comment: “In the taxation committee testimony, BIW VP, John Fitzgerald was asked by a committee member if he would open BIW books to the committee to help determine the need for the tax break. Mr Fitzgerald said quite loudly and quite clearly NO! we will not do that. It seems that the state is not to question the subsidiary of General Dynamics Corporation, the fifth largest weapons maker on the planet. The $45 million being requested would just cover the annual compensation of the top four officers of General Dynamics. I believe that the people of Maine need that money for education, infrastructure repairs and health care for our citizens. I would ask listeners to call their representatives and tell them to vote no on LD- 1781. I want to thank WERU for being the voice of the people” FMI: Follow the proposed legislation at: legislature.maine.gov/LawMakerWeb/summary.asp?ID=280067362 Contact info for your legislators is available at: legislature.maine.gov/ To receive Lawrence Reichard’s “Bricks and Mortars” column via email, contact him at lreichard@gmail.com From Alex Nunes of www.nunesweekly.com: Here are a few links that may be of interest to your audience. Producer/Host: Amy Browne Maine legislature considers restrictions on the discredited practice of “conversion therapy” On February 14th, the state legislature's Labor, Commerce Research and Economic Development committee held a public hearing on LD 912, a bill that would prohibit licensed professionals from practicing “conversion therapy” on children. The practice– which claims to change sexual orientation– is widely considered to be unethical among mental health professionals but some defend it as being within their “biblical world view”. Today on Maine Currents we listen to the bill’s presentation to the committee, and some of the testimony on both sides. Producer/Host: Amy Browne Contributor/Engineer: John Greenman Does General Dynamics Need $60 Million From the Pockets of Maine Taxpayers? The Maine legislature is considering a proposal to give a huge tax break to a military contractor. At the request of BIW, Representative Jennifer DeChant, a Democrat from Bath is sponsoring LD1781, “An Act To Encourage New Major Investments in Shipbuilding Facilities and the Preservation of Jobs”. In introducing the bill she testified that it would provide tax incentives to keep BIW competitive in its marketplace and retain a large number of quality jobs in the state. The bill has several cosponsors from both parties, but it also has drawn harsh criticism from those who see it as corporate welfare that BIW's parent company, General Dynamics, certainly doesn't need from the pockets of Mainers. A public hearing for the bill was held before the legislature's Committee on Taxation a few weeks ago. We're going to start today listening to clips from that public hearing, recorded by documentary filmmaker Regis Tremblay, and then he and activist Bruce Gagnon will be joining us for an update on where things stand now. Producer/Host: Amy Browne Audio recorded by Carolyn Coe Bruce Gagnon on the “US Pivot to the Asia-Pacific” and ties with BIW here in Maine Bruce Gagnon is well known in Maine as the co-founder of the Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space, and as an active member of Veterans for Peace. He is also a senior fellow at the Nuclear Policy Research Institute and a member of the “Working Group for Peace and Demilitarization in Asia and the Pacific” and has traveled extensively in the area. He spoke in Deer Isle on August 3rd at an event sponsored by Island Peace and Justice, Peninsula Peace and Justice and Americas Who Tell the Truth. The topic was the “Pivot to the Asia-Pacific”. Gagnon talked about the U.S. military presence in the region, U.S. relations with N. Korea, S. Korea, Japan, China, and Russia, and ties with Bath Iron Works here in Maine Note: An excerpt from this talk aired on a previous edition of Maine Currents Maine Currents- independent local news, views and culture, every Tuesday at 4pm on WERU-FM and weru.org The post Maine Currents 9/5/17 first appeared on WERU 89.9 FM Blue Hill, Maine Local News and Public Affairs Archives.

Producer/Host: Amy Browne Contributing producers: Carolyn Coe, Denis Howard Segment 1: Bruce Gagnon on Korea, BIW and the US “Pivot to the Asia-Pacific” Maine-based peace activist Bruce Gagnon spoke in Deer Isle on August 3rd about what's being called the US “Pivot to the Asia-Pacific”. Gagnon has traveled to South Korea and worked with peace activists there and elsewhere in the region who oppose US military bases in their countries. He has also made the connection with the destroyers being built here in Maine at Bath Iron Works and has been arrested for civil disobedience at BIW. Although he spoke before President Trump’s recent comments about “fire and fury” in North Korea, Gagnon's views on the region provide insight not heard in the mainstream media. He is a senior fellow at the Nuclear Policy Research Institute, and is a member of the “Working Group for Peace and Demilitarization in Asia and the Pacific” a consortium of acclaimed scholars sharing a focus on the region. (Recorded by Carolyn Coe, edited by Amy Browne) UPDATE: We contacted Bruce Gagnon this week for a comment following the escalation of tensions in the region after he spoke in Deer Isle. Here is his response: “In a new report, published by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, missile experts (including Ted Postol from MIT) write that North Korea does not have the rocket capability that Washington and the corporate media are claiming. They state, “The Hwasong-14 does not currently constitute a nuclear threat to the lower 48 states of the United States. The flight tests on July 4 and 28 were a carefully choreographed deception by North Korea to create a false impression that the Hwasong-14 is a near-ICBM that poses a nuclear threat to the continental US. The Hwasong-14 tested on July 4 and 28 may not even be able to deliver a North Korean atomic bomb to Anchorage, Alaska.” The US to this day refuses to sign a peace treaty with North Korea – thus the war legally continues. On July 27, 1953 the US signed an Armistice (ceasefire) with North Korea but that is it. Thus the continuous US-South Korean war games right along the North Korean border must make Pyongyang wonder – is this the real thing? Did the Pentagon decide to invade us for real this time like they have done in Vietnam, Yugoslavia, Granada, Panama, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, and Yemen? Embedded deep beneath North Korea's mountainous zones are some 200 varieties of minerals, including gold, iron, copper, zinc, magnesite, limestone, tungsten, and graphite. Some of these stockpiles are among the largest in the world, and North Korea, a tiny and cash-strapped nation, frequently uses them to bring in additional revenue — no matter the laws against doing so. The total value of these minerals lies somewhere between $6 trillion and $10 trillion. Could much of this war hype be a plan to grab their resources? In the end I think it important to say that North Korea is really a foil – the US does not fear NK which only has 4 nuclear warheads while the US has 6,800 of them. Clearly the demonization and scare campaign around NK is intended to justify the US military ‘pivot' of 60% of Pentagon forces into the Asia-Pacific to be aimed at China and Russia – the real prizes that Washington has on the regime change list.” Segment 2: WERU’s Denis Howard talks with Peter Alexander about his new rock opera “One Way Trip To Mars” — opening at the Waterville Opera House on August 24th.
