Lil Rel slides to Club Shay Shay and takes us on a hilarious and heartfelt journey through his life, starting from the tough streets of the Westside of Chicago. He reflects on the impact of A Different World on his desire to pursue entertainment while recounting high school days filled with tragedy, dodging the pitfalls of gang life through the guidance of his dad. In this last episode of Season 4, we're going to find out more about the Black female entertainers who lit up the stages of 1920s America: who they were, the (many) struggles they faced, and all the ways they absolutely slayed. We'll meet blues singers like Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Ethel Waters, and Mamie Smith, as well as dancers like Josephine Baker. (Content warning: brief discussion of lynching). Want more Exploress while the main feed takes a brief hiatus? I'll be regularly posting bonus episodes over on Patreon. You'll find show notes for this episode at my Exploress website. You can now buy my ladycentric timelines, maps, and art prints at the Exploress shop.  Also, did you know: I've got a novel out! NIGHTBIRDS is a 1920s-tinted fantasy about girls who will gift their magic with a kiss...for a price. I think you might just like it. And the sequel's coming out later this year, so there's never been a better time to dive in.

Before the era of the episode, Black Vaudeville Performers Wore Blackface?, Black entertainers were often found on stage singing spirituals or in minstrel shows. In both cases, white people paid to see 'authentic' depictions of Black life, which, for them, had to trace back to slavery. This episode's guest is Professor Sandra Jean Graham, author of Spirituals and the Birth of a Black Entertainment Industry. The legacy of spirituals on stage and even their minstrel parodies is that spirituals are still a part of American culture. They may not look or sound the same as folk spirituals during slavery, but they are what have lasted through 3 centuries.Music CreditPeaceLoveSoul by Jeris (c) copyright 2012 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/VJ_Memes/35859 Ft: KungFu (KungFuFrijters)

According to the Jewish Post: Rapper Kanye West has again issued anti semitic statements, this time blaming “Jewish Zionists” for news stories about his ex-wife Kim Kardashian and her then-boyfriend Pete Davidson having sex in front of a fireplace. “It's Jewish Zionists that [are] about that life,” he said on Sunday. “That's telling this Christian woman that has four black children to put that out as a message in the media.” The rapper then mentions Dov Charney, founder of the Los Angeles apparel manufacturing company American Apparel, who is Jewish. According to West, Charney refused to release the rapper's controversial “White Lives Matter” shirt shortly after West published his “Death con 3 on Jewish people” tweet. “It's cause he's Jewish, and this is my exact point that I'm making,” West said following Charney's decision. “Jewish people have owned the Black voice. Whether it's through us wearing the Ralph Lauren shirt, or it's all of us being signed to a record label, or having a Jewish manager, or being signed to a Jewish basketball team, or doing a movie on a Jewish platform like Disney.” The campaign against our brother is real!
