Why does it matter who reviews our video games? That's today's big question, and my guest is Swapna Krishna. Swapna and I recorded this conversation in 2022, and as gaming and the entire media ecosystem changes and evolves and is pulled apart and merged, it's more important than ever to find reputable sources we not only trust, but who we have a connection with, and that's why representation matters so much. Swapna is a writer and journalist covering space, science, tech, and pop culture, and writes some of the most empathetic tech, and pop culture commentary on the web. She writes everywhere from Fast Company to StarWars.com, from StarTrek.com to Business Insider and the LA Times, Bitch Magazine, Bustle, Mental Floss, and more. Swapna has appeared on a bazillion excellent podcasts, she's been at ComicCon, she's the co-host of the Desi Geek Girls Podcast, and the host of PBS's show, Far Out. -----------Have feedback or questions? In a world where trust in institutions and in news is falling and the role of influencers is growing, finding the connective tissue between you and your audience is key to, well, connecting.  To establish a rapport, which can if nourished, lead to trust, which can lead to a genuine connection. And for the creator to go further, to push deeper, to find meaning and bearing in places we as consumers or readers or listeners might not otherwise look or expect, like in local news or video game reviews or recipes. I think that matters a lot. We're not only losing trust but feeling that loss. With so much coming at us, we notice and feel a lack of connection, we feel adrift and unmoored. I am moved by people whose work and art I can connect with, whether I'm seeking it out or not. Because connection matters. Who we get our COVID information or our weather forecasts from matters, but also who helps us understand where we can find comfort, and why. My guest today is Swapna Krishna. Swapna is a writer and journalist covering space, science, tech, and pop culture. She writes everywhere from Fast Company to StarWars.com, from StarTrek.com to Business Insider, the LA Times, Bitch Magazine, Bustle, Mental Floss, and more. She's appeared on a million excellent podcasts, at Comic-Con, and is the co-host of her own show, the Desi Geek Girls podcast, and the new host of PBS's show Far Out. Swapna often writes some of the most empathetic tech and pop culture commentary on the web. She has this unique ability to say “this is what this big thing means to me” and make you feel like “yes, me too!” or “Wait I didn't think about that”. We have very different backgrounds and lives but I trust her writing and thoroughly enjoy her new show, and her efforts to try and meet people where they are, on science issues and pop culture fandoms big and small. ----------- Have feedback or questions? http://www.twitter.com/importantnotimp (Tweet us), or send a message to questions@importantnotimportant.com New here? She is the author of Dear Black Girl: Letters from Your Sisters on Stepping into Your Power, and she has been called to share her analyses in media outlets such as NPR's Weekend Edition and Janet Mock's So POPular! on MSNBC.com. Her work has also appeared in countless outlets such as The New York Times, The Atlantic, Los Angeles Times, Bitch Magazine, Ms. and other media.  Winfrey-Harris is Vice President of Community Leadership and Effective Philanthropy at the Central Indiana Community Foundation, and she speaks at university campuses nationwide. She has dedicated her life's work to advocating for Black women and girls and defying destructive social narratives that limit their potential. She is co-founder of Centering Sisters, LLC, which unapologetically addresses the needs and issues of Black women, girls, and femmes. Learn more at TamaraWinfreyHarris.com.Praised by The Washington Post as “a myth-busting portrait of Black women in America,” Tamara Winfrey-Harris' The Sisters Are Alright: Changing the Broken Narrative of Black Women in America exposed the high cost of “misogynoir,” uplifted the experiences of real Black women and shed light on their quest to break free of enduring and vicious stereotypes.  Since then, the Black community continues to grapple with systemic racism, while the book has become a touchstone of Black feminist thought. With a television development deal in the works with Wise Entertainment and Gabrielle Union's I'll Have Another Productions, and an updated second edition, The Sisters Are Alright is more relevant than ever (Publication date: October 12, 2021; Berrett-Koehler Publishers).  While emancipation may have occurred more than 150 years ago, Winfrey-Harris argues that America still won't let Black women be free from an insidious coven of caricatures: the servile Mammy, angry Sapphire, and lascivious Jezebel. Persisting to this day, these stereotypes continue to infiltrate newspaper headlines, Sunday sermons, social media memes, cable punditry, government policies, big-screen portrayals and hit song lyrics.  The latest edition of this bestseller features new interviews with diverse Black women. Alongside these authentic experiences and new voices, Winfrey Harris offers fresh Black feminist analysis of current events, politics and, popular culture--from “W.A.P.” and the rise of digital blackface to new civic activism and the risks of Black maternity. These include: The evolution of stereotypes of Black women, with new real-life examples, such as the rise of blackfishing and digital blackface (which help white women rise to fame)The media's continued fascination with Black women's sexuality (as with Cardi B or Megan Thee Stallion).Black women and power and how persistent stereotypes challenge Black women's recent leadership and achievements in activism, community organizing and politics. Interviews with activists and civic leaders and interrogating media coverage and perceptions of Stacey Abrams, Vice President Kamala Harris and others.Debunking vicious misconceptions rooted in long-standing racism, Tamara Winfrey-Harris elevates Black femme voices talking about marriage, motherhood, health, sexuality, beauty, anger, and power and more.

And one of the things that always sticks out to us is that the problems, the racism, the treatment of non White people in this country that we wrote about in great detail throughout the book, didn't get fixed in 2020, or 2021. In fact, every single chapter that we wrote in the second and third sections of the book has reoccurred numerous times over since we wrote the book. We're not in some post racial world here. We didn't fix racism because people suddenly realized that it was still happening sometime in the summer of 2020. And our next guest knows that all too well. Tamara Winfrey-Harris wrote The Sisters Are Alright in 2015, and just released a second edition to this book this year. Not because racism is over, or we figured out intersectional feminism, or that we're even all on the same page - not at all. The second edition includes so much more information about the stereotypes and experiences of Black women in America, what we need to know when it comes to intersectional feminism, interracial friendships, and simply co-existing with and respecting everyone. In the end, the sisters are alright. But that doesn't mean that we don't have a ton of work to do - so start by listening in and reflecting on your own perceptions, experiences, and things YOU can do differently. Have questions, comments, or concerns? Email us at hello@dearwhitewomen.com What to listen for: The four stereotypes of Black women, and how they play out in our society today (and take a moment to reflect - do you see any of these yourself?) Tamara's thoughts on if White women can be allies (spoiler alert: YES!), and what allyship really means Ways to combat our tendency to lump people into stereotypes, and instead, challenge ourselves to see people's intersectionalities and identities - their humanity About Tamara Winfrey-Harris Tamara Winfrey-Harris is a writer who specializes in race and gender and their intersection with politics, popular culture, and current events. Episode SummaryErin and Rachel don’t have time for nonsense, and neither did 1951 audiences when Alice in Wonderland flopped at the box office. Thankfully, marijuana-fueled college students in the 1960s had all the time in the world for a trip down the rabbit hole, thus solidifying a permanent place in popular culture for Alice in Wonderland, a film surprisingly devoid of racist or sexist content compared to its predecessors. Episode BibliographyAikens, K. The first incarnation of this blog and podcast, Poiesis Studio, was actually a practice group for actors and filmmakers. We used to meet at the Democracy Center in Harvard Square, Cambridge. It was there that I first met, Nicole Mazzeo. Her educational organization Pleasure Pie was sponsoring an ongoing discussion group called Sex Positive Boston. Curious to see what they were about, I eventually ventured into one of the meetings. A bit nervous, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself welcomed into a meeting space of very diverse folks talking with one another openly and honestly about their sexuality. I was struck how genuine and sincere people were, and how much they seemed to get out of having this space to share their thoughts and feelings on sex and relationships. As someone who leads therapy groups, I felt keenly aware of the presence and skill with which the facilitator, Nicole led this group. Nicole thinks outside of the box, and brings a boon of wisdom in this episode. 15 Minutes: a podcast about fame, with Jamie Berger

Andi Zeisler cofounded Bitch Magazine in 1996, It has grown into Bitch Media, a feminism-meets-pop-culture independent media conglomerate. Her book, We Were Feminists Once: From Riot Grrrl to CoverGirl®, the Buying and Selling of a Political Movement is a detailed history of feminism in media and culture, and a takedown of the easy and breezy way celebrities and fan culture and products are taking on the term “feminist,” even to the extent that boys all over are wearing “This is what a feminist looks like” t-shirts for street cred with the ladies. Z argues that while there is good to this, it’s also just . . . too easy, too ignorant of history, a capitalist co-optation of a century-plus old social and political movement into what she and others are calling “marketplace feminism.”Her article, “The Bitch America Needs,” in support of Hillary Clinton for President, appeared in the New York Times last Saturday, 9/10/16. If you want to hear her discuss the naming of the magazine, or the word “bitch” in general, there’s plenty on youtube. It didn’t come up in our discussion.Vanity insists that I tell you I was getting over a nasty summer headcold at the time. We talked, Skype to celphone, in August.***Rate us! Review us! Abortion is a hot button for most people, and no matter whether you think it’s an inalienable right or murder, or somewhere in between, you should know what’s happening in the US regarding the issue. A new report from the Guttmacher institute reports that 42 different states enacted more than 120 provisions regarding reproductive health in 2012 - and 92 abortion restrictions in 2011. Ranging from provision of educational materials, required ultrasounds and even requiring non-medically necessary trans-vaginal ultrasounds, states have been busy the last couple of years regarding how much say the state has in a woman’s decision to have an abortion. North Dakota has passed a law that prohibits abortion for gender or genetic defect of the fetus. And it looks like these conditions placed on abortion are continuing to gain in popularity. Join us Saturday as guest Megan Burbank, Communications Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington helps us make some sense of this trend. Megan holds degrees from Smith College and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and has written about politics, feminism, arts and entertainment for several publications, including The Stranger, The Seattle Times, Bitch Magazine and The Toast.
