In the early days of cable television, there wasn't a single network aimed at Black audiences. Sheila Johnson and her husband at the time saw an opening, and put all their hopes, efforts and money into co-founding Black Entertainment Television. The gamble paid off and the channel grew to become an influential and successful part of culture and television history. But behind the glitter, Johnson's marriage was difficult and degrading and she lost track of herself and her dreams. In her memoir “Walk Through Fire,” Johnson shares what those tough times were like, and how she found her way back to her power. She emerged to create Salamander Collection, a luxury hotel and resort company, and became the only African American woman to own part of three professional sports teams. And, she found love again. Johnson tells her story on stage at the 2024 Aspen Ideas Festival to Kelly Corrigan, host of the podcast “Kelly Corrigan Wonders.” aspenideas.org

Black Entertainment Television launched in 1980--at a time when MTV didn't play Hip hop or "urban music. Not only did BET fill a vital programming void, it was the first Black-owned business traded on the New York Stock Exchange, and it helped make the first Black Billionaire in the US (Bob Johnson). Debra Lee, a young Harvard-educated lawyer drawn to the company's mission, was recruited by Johnson early on, eventually taking his place as CEO. Lee was pivotal in turning the small, revolutionary cable station into an industry staple. The magazine features cover stories like Jekalyn Carr. It's good to have gospel magazines. I don't remember any black gospel music magazines in the 80's and 90's on the shelf at the bookstore. It was always the Ebony, Jet, and RightOn magazines that were so popular about black entertainment. There may have been some black gospel music magazines around during that time, but I just didn't see them. It seemed as if the Rock n Roll entertainers were the ones that stood out on the bookshelfs and television the most. It seemed like they were the ones getting the publicity constantly. I mostly heard about gospel singers mostly through radio on Sunday mornings on a show called Inspirations Across America. There was a program on Black Entertainment Television hosted by Dr. Bobby Jones (Bobby Jones Gospel). The series premiered on Sunday, January 27, 1980, two days after the network's January 25 launch. I didn't always know about the show, and I didn't always have cable or satellite. But getting back to the Encore Gospel Magazine, it's great to have it. Barry shares how his experience of growing up in segregated Alabama during the 1960s “living a foot in two worlds” shaped his path toward becoming a “possibilitist”— someone who uses his or her appreciation for human difference to celebrate the prospect of future opportunities. Originally on track to become a professional violinist, Barry switched gears and attended Yale University after a friend explained that he could share stories using his art in ways that do not necessarily appear to be about art. Following a few years on Wall Street, Barry attended Harvard Business School where he wondered what would happen if he intersected his business training with the world of story-telling. This sparked his beginning at The Walt Disney Company and later at Black Entertainment Television as President of a Microsoft joint venture. There are references to a couple of "Eddie Murphy"'s comedy bits. The first one is when Riley is watching the news there is a guy Huey refers to as "Black Eye-Witness Man". This was a bit on Eddie Murphy's comedy CD "Eddie Murphy's Greatest Comedy Hits" where he talks about a guy that witnessed a man getting hit by a car. They both start the same way.And the second one is when Riley is attempting to throw himself down the stairs so that Granddad can take him to the hospital. As he is rolling down the stairs his shoe flies off and Riley says "my shoe". This is in reference to a bit in "Eddie Murphy Delirious" when he describes his Aunt Bunny falling down the stairs.  Show Music: Intro:  #Makeachange by K.I.R.K. is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 License.
