Today's episode features one of the authors behind Magnetic, a powerful tribute to the late Massimo Osti and his legendary clothing labels C.P. Company, Boneville, and Stone Island. We dive into Tony's personal journey into the world of menswear and explore what drew him to Osti's iconic brands. Our conversation unpacks how these labels became essential pieces of 90s youth culture especially on the football terraces, where they weren't just clothes, but cultural statements. We discuss Magnetic, the book co authored by Tony Rivers and James Burnett, which chronicles how Osti's designs made their way to the UK and left an indelible mark on both menswear and football culture. From the idea of a "uniform" worn by terrace-goers to the emergence of a new subculture, this episode uncovers how clothing became a language of identity, rebellion, and unity. Join us for an insightful conversation on the intersection of menswear, football, and 90s youth culture and how it all helped shape a pivotal era in menswear.

With one foot in the world of DuckTales and another in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth, Jeff Smith's Bone is so confident and assured from its very first issue that it seems to have arrived fully formed, but it was actually the result of years of refinement. Syndicates balked at Smith's creative vision for a four-panel comic strip version of Bone, but their loss was comic books' gain, as the series became an indie darling in single issues and eventually blazed a trail for today's YA graphic novel market. In this episode, we take a look at the first collection—Out from Boneville—learn about Smith's surprising creative influences, and discuss what made Bone a true “all-ages” comic beloved by kids, librarians, and old-school comics fans alike.

In "Bone: Out from Boneville," author Jeff Smith presents the first in a series of children's graphic novel books that follow three cousins who are lost in a desert and end up in a forested valley filled with both wonderful and terrifying creatures. While Sam & Max is where Telltale Games first acquired its fame within the industry, it was not their first attempt at the adventure game genre. That would be Bone. On this episode of Telling the Tale, Wolfe and Dustin will be covering Bone: Out from Boneville, the first of Telltale's two Bone game episodes. Technically these aren't episodes? They were marketed as their own full games. But they're clearly episode-length. Also technically, it's "Bone... Out from Boneville" with a big space after the word "Bone." But it's WAY more fun to say "bone out from boneville" as if "boning out" is a cool skateboarding trick and a "boneville" is a cool skateboarding ramp. Always go with what sounds good over what is technically correct. That's writing 101. Here on Telling the Tale, we're not necessarily covering all of Telltale's work in release order. We want to go roughly chronologically (i.e. starting with mostly older things and graduating to mostly later things), but we've reserved the right to hop around back and forth. This, then, is a very special episode as we are covering Telltale's very first game, Telltale Texas Hold'em. It's about poker! It is so very much about poker. It's not about very many other things! Do we, two humble gamespeople who don't know much about poker, have the ability to record a full hour podcast about poker? There's only one way to find out! This week we discuss the epic fantasy comic, Bone! After being run out of their home town, the Bone cousins find their way into a deep, forested valley filled with wonderful and terrifying creatures. But there are dark forces conspiring against them.
There were once these three cousins, who done got run out of town. One was a con man, the other a doofus, and the third, a journeyman. they descended into a valley, found themselves a friendly dragon, a talking bug, and a beautiful young woman who could walk between her dreams. ...sounds like a 60s folks song written while tripping on acid? Not quite...this week we're talking about BONE - the comics masterpiece epic by Jeff Smith. Bone was the indie comics darling of the 90s, released sporadically over 55 black and white issues from 1991 to 2004. It tells the story of .... 1. the adorable Phone Bone, who just wants people to understand what a masterpiece Moby Dick... 2. Phonecible P Bone - aka "Phoney Bone" ho's always on the grift, and... 3. Smiley Bone, the slapsticky, happy go lucky one, with hidden depths. When the story begins, the 3 cousins have been run out of Boneville for one of Phoney's many shenanigans. The 3 find themselves in a scenic valley where things are not what they seem. There's rat creatures, a great cow race, and so much more. With a supporting cast - the beautiful Thorn, the persnickeny Gran'ma Ben, and the righteous Lucius - all of whose mysterious pasts unravel into an expansively epic story - you're never sure where things are going to go. In recent years - through a re-release in color, it's found a new audience for nephews, nieces, and friends' kids around the world - and a welcome break out of the superhero genre that the kids are drawn to. Bone is a masterpiece of comics art. Joining us this week is my personal friend of the Pod, and host of the Distiller Podcast, Brandon Dawson

Jeff Smith broke ground with the graphic novelization of his long-running comic, BONE. This epic story about three Bone cousins lost in a valley filled with wonderful and terrifying creatures is loved by readers young and old, and was named by Time as one of the top ten graphic novels of all time. Today, there are millions of BONE books in print in the United States, and they have been translated into thirty languages worldwide. Smith started drawing stories about the BONE characters before the age of ten. In 1991, he launched the comic book BONE and began to create the serialized epic fantasy story that was eventually published in nine volumes. Smith was the subject of a documentary called "The Cartoonist: Jeff Smith, BONE, and the Changing Face of Comics." Smith lives (and dreams) in Columbus, Ohio, with his wife, Vijaya Iyer. Today we read "Bone: Out from Boneville" and "Bone: The Great Cow Race," the first two volumes of the acclaimed series by Jeff Smith. Join us and find out what we thought about these books that revolutionized graphic novels as we know them. Find out where Jeff Smith’s inspiration came from, how "Bone" has affected the classroom, and how it’s influenced cartoonists who grew up reading them (hint: it’s kgros). And join us for our exciting new TradeWaiters segments, “Um Actually” and “Devil’s Advocate.” Music by Sleuth. Our next episode will cover "Today Is the Last Day of the Rest of Your Life" by Ulli Lust.
The truth is out there: season 3 of The X-Files is the show's strongest season. That is, if you can trust Paul, Arlo, and the inimitable Wesley "Wezzo" Mead as they have another of their periodic discussions of Chris Carter's '90s masterwork. What makes season 3 work so well? It might have something to do with the series' expanded tonal range--a tense thriller in "Pusher," Satanic panic meetsHeathers in "Syzygy"--and the confidence with which it tackles both the monster-of-the-week hours and the increasingly complex (or is that convoluted?) mytharc installments. Then there are the Darin Morgan episodes ("Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose," "War of the Coprophages," and "Jose Chung's From Outer Space"), which are something else entirely. Plus holy cow, UK politics have gotten super depressing since the last time Wezzo stopped by. Next: Paul and Arlo return to Boneville, site of last year's Four-Color Flashback, for a look at the newly published Bone: Coda.

Jeff Smith made comics safe for kids again. In 1991, the cartoonist began self-publishing, an all-ages adventure story rendering in a style reminiscent of legends Walt Kelly and Carl Barks that felt like a breath of fresh air in a world of sequential art utterly disrupted by Watchmen and the Dark Knight half a decade before. With 55 issues spread out over the course of 13 years, Smith created one of the medium’s great masterworks, a 1,300 cartoon page epic to rival the likes of the Odyssey or Lord of Rings, racking up ten Eisners and 11 Harvey Awards in the process. After a decade and a half in Boneville, Smith abruptly shifted gears with RASL, a sci-fi tale of a dimension-hopping art thief also published on his own Cartoon Books. Shortly after the end of RASL’s run, Smith once again pivoted, exploring the world of Webcomics through Tüki, the largely wordless tale of African tribesman who dared venture to other continents. We sat down with Smith at Book Expo of America to discover his wideranging and pioneering works, the wild world of self-publishing and how his hometown of Columbus, Ohio has been transformed into Comicstown, USA.
After spending 2014 weaving their way through the many different stories of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, Paul and AJ have settled on something which appears much simpler for this year's Four-Color Flashback: Jeff Smith's Bone. Appearances can be deceiving, though. The boys have heard tell that Smith's cartoony magnum opus, taking obvious inspiration from Walt Kelly and Carl Barks' comic strips, grows into a complex, sprawling epic. And even in Vol. 1: Out from Boneville, wherein Fone Bone, Phoney Bone, and Smiley Bone find themselves in a strange new land, there are inklings of the high fantasy to come. Plus, the boys discuss friend of the show Kenn Edwards' short film The Joke, attempt to break down Tina Fey and Robert Carlock's new Netflix show Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and prepare to enter the Age of Ultron with a new trailer. Next: Eric Sipple stops by to chat. This won't end well.
For the first Geek Challenge of 2015, Paul and AJ have been challenged by friend of the show/Smoke Gets in Your Ears co-host Kenn Edwards to do things a little differently: Paul has to challenge AJ to a movie not from the '80s, while AJ has to challenge Paul to one from the '80s that isn't black-and-white or foreign. After some head-scratching, Paul has chosen to force AJ to endure the 1976 cult classic Logan's Run, about two people exploring the outer world; and AJ has tasked Paul with sitting through the 1988 David Cronenberg film Dead Ringers, about two people exploring the inner world. Tenuous connection aside, these are very different movies. Very different. Plus, the boys pay their respects to Leonard Nimoy, talk Spider-Gwen, and just want to be one of Will Forte's ball-friends on The Last Man on Earth. Next: this year's Four-Color Flashback begins with a look at Out from Boneville, the first volume of Jeff Smith's cartoony magnum opus Bone.
