Top 5: 5 - Bosh - Police procedural featuring Titus Welliver, I read the first four books in a row, currently heading on book five of like 35, once I finish another book i'm on. It's amazing. If you could literally pick anyone who captures Bosh, it's Titus Welliver. 4. Brooklyn Nine Nine - I've seen every episode twice, it's outstanding. Jake Peralta and Charles Boyle are hilarious. 3. Highlander from the 1990s, I remember watching it pre knowing about the films it was based on and thought for Canadian content it was great. 2. Celebrity Name Game - Craig Ferguson hosted this guessing game where Celebrities and fans would team up to try and win the fan some money. 1 Law and Order SVU - Easily the best police procedural of all time. Olivia Benson and her team have seen it all. Also shout out to Law and Order Organized Crime where they gave Stabler basically his own show so neither he or Benson can feel overshadowed. X: @E_Freeds IG: @NatteringWithE Brundan Honourable mentions: Oz, Simpsons, Entourage, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, Ren and Stempy. Top 5: 5 - Sopranos - Dug a lady, but dug the show more, saw one episode and was hooked. Most rewatches of any show I've seen. 4 - Futurama - When it first came out it was excellent. When it went to Adult Swim I was hooked on everything. Had my friends over to watch. Until it was brought back it had the best ending. 3- Letterkenney - Turned on to that during pandemic, blew through it, it's one of the most bingeable shows I've ever watched. Great ending, sad to see it end. Jared Keo as Wayne Shoresy, is fantastic. 2- Law and Order SVU - Watching it for 20 years, loved every episode, every character change, every story ark. Munch the best character, dark and sad but very good watch. 1- The Venture Brothers - My favourite show of all time, ran for 7 seasons 81 episodes, 4 specials, every single one of them was great. Drop subtle hints in the early seasons then pay off in later seasons. Brock Samson phenomenal character. Johnny Quest rip off originally then became it's own show. GO TEAM VENTURE! We are back for our second installment in our Capes 'N Cowards season. This season is a celebration of stories where unlikely characters have to rise to the occasion of herohood. In that vein, today we are taking a look at The Venture Bros.! We watched the first two seasons of the Adult Swim cartoon to see who may want to check this one out. The Venture Bros. is an adult animated television co-created by Chris McCulloch aka Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer that aired on Adult Swim for 7 seasons. The duo ran the show with their unique vision and inspirations that are clear throughout the entire series. The show follows Dr. Thaddeus "Rusty" Venture, his bodyguard/father-figure/secret agent Brock Samson, and Dr. Venture's two teenage fraternal twin sons Dean and Hank Venture. Through the series they get into all sorts of satirical pulp adventures with heavy emphasis on science fiction, superheroes, and other things that influenced the show. Jordan joins Dan once again to talk about a show he has wanted to cover forever. Jordan reveals his origins with the series which are very similar to those we have heard in the Evil Dead episode from GateSlashers 2. Dan talks about his only experience with the show before this episode and how it includes electronic cigarettes and New York City Comic Con.
This week we are jumping into more Venture Bros with season 1 episode 1 (2 if you're watching on a streaming service). Dia de Los Dangerous which neither of us took Spanish in school, I think it translates roughly to, "Don't hit Brock Samson with a truck."

With Doom's sinister plot drawing ever-closer to completion, the League know that they have to take any opportunity they can to strike out at the metallic despot. It's no wonder, then, that when Doom's secret time platform is discovered on the volcanic world of Mustafar, the League send five of their most dangerous members to destroy it. Will these heroes strike a telling blow against the lord of Phyrexia, or will they and their mission burn to ash? Squirrel Girl puts her degree to work; Amethyst tries some identity theft; Brock Samson charges into danger; Godzilla points out the folly of Doom; and Dante is deeply unqualified for a leadership position. Inspired by Emma Clare's Friday newspost about supporting characters, today we're discussing sidekicks! Sidekicks are a useful character type that are used in so many different ways. They can be a specialised type of supporting character that are also a main character or they can be the main protagonist in some cases. In comics sidekicks came in during the early days as a way of giving juvenile readers their own insert character who they could identify with… Bucky Barnes, Jimmy Olsen, Robin etc. They had other functions like giving the hero someone to save, providing commentary, reaction and exposition. Later when that kind of sidekick fell out of favour they became superheroes in their own right. But sidekicks are a lot older than comics. People in social situations will often naturally fall into that sort of role because humans work well in hierarchies. One person takes the lead and the other follows: the person with the most forceful personality, The most experienced person, the higher ranked person, the socially superior person leads, and the other follows and that's reflected in literature. Class was often used to put people in their “natural” roles: Frodo and Sam from Lord of the Rings; AJ Raffles and Bunny Manders; Sherlock Holes and Dr Watson: the posher person with the higher social rank is automatically the leader. This is very much a part of the British class system, officers and senior management came from the higher social classes etc, it's a large subject. But that's also inverted occasionally; Jeeves is Bertie Wooster's Valet and social inferior and yet Jeeves is the leader in that relationship. The sidekick is often the main character when used as the point of view character to tell us how marvellous their leader is. We get this with Doctor Watson in the Sherlock Holmes stories, Bunny in the Raffles the gentleman thief stories, Bertie in the Jeeves stories, and Archie in the Nero Wolfe stories. Archie is interesting; he does everything, he's the main active character, and yet he's still no more than a sidekick to the great Nero Wolfe. Sometimes the sidekick is the smart character who's there to try and rein in the excesses of their leader, like Arthur with the Tick, Sancho Panza with Don Quixote, Doctor Girlfriend and the Monarch, Agent 99 and Maxwell Smart, Kif and Zap Brannigan, Banes and Ozoneocean… They can also be used to compliment the leader by replacing something they lack, not just intelligence as in the former example. Kato in the Pink Panther provides Inspector Clouseau with muscle, Brock Samson provides EVERYTHING for Doctor Venture, Doctor Watson has skill the ladies, tact, charm, and humanity that Sherlock lacks, Archie has the confidence and mobility that Nero hasn't. There are so many clever an interesting ways to use sidekicks, far in advance of the Batman and Robin method! I think we should continue to use them. What are your fave sidekicks and why? Do you have a sidekick in your story? This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to Operation Boom - Booooooooooom! This one thunders in, all action and furious energy, rolling in like a 50 tonne bulldozer at high speed while on FIRE and sparking with insane electrical discharges. This is danger music. You also got to vote on who plays which characters, which means, among other things, that Miles will be playing the Swedish Murder Machine himself, Brock Samson! Upon receiving the first draft of his character sheet, Miles gave GM Dan a call over Skype to discuss the intricacies of Brock's character, including whether or not surviving the vacuum of space entitles one to a higher Endurance score and the specific mechanics of berserker rage. And because they are good podcasters, of course, they recorded everything! Show creator McCulloch was one of the main writers for the Saturday morning animated series The Tick. He created The Venture Bros. storyline sometime prior to 2000. After working for the television program Sheep in the Big City and the live-action version of The Tick, McCulloch set to turning The Venture Bros. into an animated series. The Venture Bros. was originally conceived as a comic book story for an issue of Monkeysuit. McCulloch realized that his notes were too extensive for a short comics story and proposed that Comedy Central air The Venture Bros. as an animated series, but the network rejected it. Although the first draft of the pilot script was written in the spring of 2000, the premise was not greenlit until around the summer of 2002 by Adult Swim. McCulloch had not previously considered Cartoon Network because he "didn't want to tone The Venture Bros. down," and was unaware of the existence of the network's late night adult-oriented programming block, Adult Swim. With the revised pilot, production began in autumn of that year, and the pilot was first run on February 16, 2003. The first season of the series was completed and premiered in 2004, and it was added to the summer schedule in August.

Episode 14, wherein our hosts duck and cover. THIS IS AN EMERGENCY BROADCAST OF THE VS. PODCAST SYSTEM. Last Sunday, Adult Swim put out the question - Brock Samson vs. Black Dynamite. Who wins? And that's right up our dark alley here at the Vs. Podcast. Because AS is announcing the winner tomorrow night, we went into emergency mode and put together a (surprisingly) coherent episode in record time. Brock Samson, OSI agent and bodyguard of the Venture family. The blonde Swedish murder machine with the honky hair. He's like the boogeyman of the villain world, an unstoppable killing machine with an unquenchable blood lust. Also perhaps the toughest Led Zeppelin fan in the world. Black Dynamite, the most bad-ass mutha on the street. A stone-cold pimp with a flair for kung fu and straight up violence. There ain't a man alive badder than this man, no one quicker with a set of nunchuks or a grappling hook. He'll kick your teeth in with a smile - not that you can tell when he's smilin'. This is the Adult Swim war to settle the score. Unless Carl from the Aquateens plans on becoming a secret agent, there's no one on the Sunday night block badder than these two. And with Peat Ski championing Black Dynamite and Pyg fighting for Brock Samson, we will have a winner after this episode. Hey Adult Swim - it was our pleasure.
Episode 20: Someone get Cris Carter film on Calvin Johnson, Brock Samson is comin' for ya, Romo's choke legacy, TEAM OBLITERATER, Chris Cooley strikes back!, Grantland bad QB update and more!
