Recording on the day after Luis Robert Jr. stole a grand slam and then knocked in four runs himself, duty geezer Leigh Allan and his son and (while he's in a play in Cincinnati) Ohio Valley correspondent, Will, call for the White Sox to trade Luis before another game is played, taking whatever a contending team will offer. Said urging by people who are very much his fans is not just so the Sox can perhaps pick up a decent prospect, or at least a top-of-the-line parking lot attendant, but to free Robert from captivity and let him play in meaningful games where his immense skills can be useful and he can enjoy the game. This won't happen, of course, but at least we were pulling for you, Luis. On the bright side, the duo cover the excellent appearance of Edgar Quero and the post-adjustment success thus far of Miguel Vargas, and what appears to be a pleasant abundance of catching talent. This being the White Sox, the bright side on position players is limited, so the conversation ventures to the darker aspects, of which there are many, most notably Andrew Vaughn. Five years in, the excuses for Vaughn's weakness (now 0.0 bWAR for his career), while often valid, are wearing thinner than a Swedish pancake, so the question is asked, “Why won't they give Tim Elko a chance?” Elko is tearing up Triple-A ball in Charlotte, so why not find out if he's strictly a AAAA player, or if he can hack it in the majors? He can't be worse than Vaughn defensively, because Charles Comiskey himself would be better, even while deceased — and maybe he can hit. Otherwise, there is disagreement over whether to let youngsters take over and sit the 30+ has-beens or never-weres when they're off the IL, and much praise for the excellent performance of the young starting pitchers. Will even ventures into the possibility the team could be adequate by 2027 or 2028. Oh, yeah — Will also has a rant against the Colorado Rockies, for apparently trying to destroy the White Sox record for ineptitude just one year after it was set, leaving Sox fans nothing to strive for this season. Has any pitcher in baseball been better than Zack Wheeler the past five seasons? If you look at the numbers, Wheeler is No. 1. And it's not even close. Wheeler leads baseball with 25.4 bWAR and 24.7 fWAR from 2020-24. He is second in wins (59), second in innings pitched (829 1/3) and WHIP (1.03). He is third in ERA (2.94). He has a career 2.18 postseason ERA, which is the fourth-best (minimum 10 starts). But what makes Wheeler tick? We learned a little more about Wheeler's preparation, his demeanor on the mound and more in a recent conversation at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Florida.Love The Phillies Show? Everyone knows about Frank Thomas, Paul Konerko, Nellie Fox, and all other legends who have had their jersey retired by the Chicago White Sox. But what about the overlooked players of the past? Your Orlando Cabrera's of the world...your Orlando Hudson's of the world. Which CHGO White Sox crew member can draft the best starting 9 of former White Sox players with less than 5 career bWAR with the team? Plus, "Friday Flicks" returns with a Diehard-suggested movie, "The Benchwarmers" (2006).

Since we are father and son we're very interested in baseball fathers and sons. Bobby and Barry Bonds are at the top of the all-time father and son combinations when it comes to bWAR. We talk about them and all the other top father-son combinations. We also cover the 19 father-son combinations represented in MLB today based on opening day rosters. How may fathers were HOFers who had sons playing in MLB? Have sons ever made the HOF when dad didn't? Intro & Outro music this season courtesy of Mercury Maid! Braves Max Fried had gotten off to a spotty start to his season but his 92 pitch shutout in an hour and 54 minutes vs. the Marlins announced he's just fine. Shohei Othani has 17 doubles already which is on pace for an all-time record. How about Elly De La Cruz? 1.7 bWAR in a month. If he keeps up what he's done in April he will have a bWAR more than 10 and 100+ stolen bases. The Guardians and Brewers continue to surprise, the Braves and Dodgers not so much. The Astros are facing a critical upcoming week vs. Cleveland and 1st place Seattle. Watch this episode on YouTube: Intro & Outro music this season courtesy of Mercury Maid! [Er, uh, um, this was recorded before Friday's night's slaughter in Philadelphia, so the lavish praise for Garrett Crochet may need a tiny dab of correction. Nah, what the heck, he's one of the only decent things to happen with this team, so let's plow on.] This edition, SSS duty geezer Leigh Allan and his son and west coast correspondent, Will, disagree as to whether Garrett Crochet will have a higher WAR than number of wins. It's close call either way, so here's your chance to make a guess (hint: as of recording, his bWAR is 0.8, record 1-2): Since Sharing Sox was recorded on the same day The Athletic raised serious doubts the White Sox will have fewer losses than the 1962 Mets, who went 40-120 and inspired the famous Casey Stengel quote, “Can't anyone here play this game?” So, what the heck, here's another chance to vote. As for other matters, the duo discuss how the pitching is better than expected (though not great) and the two newbies did well, how the promise of defensive improvement was apparently meant as humor, and how the Mendoza Line is so far above the majority of the White Sox lineup that it's barely visible up there. Of course, the billionaires seeking billions in handouts gets some discussion. Then there's Tim Anderson coming to Chicago to play the Cubs and being quoted about Sox players not really caring about winning. We'd noticed, Tim. Learn more about your ad choices. Jim is joined by the host of the Chicago White Sox podcast Good Guys Talk Back, Nick Murawski, to break down the hall of fame candidacy of former MLB third baseman Robin Ventura. First, Jim and Nick discuss how talented of a defender Ventura was in the hot corner (9:01). Next, they cover Ventura's legendary grand slam single in Game 5 of the 1999 NLCS, how he stacks up to HOFer Ron Santo at third, and his 46.1 bWAR during the 1990s, the highest out of any third baseman (29:02). Finally, they rank Ventura among the best third basemen of his era (50:17), before making a final call on whether or not Ventura deserves to be inducted into Cooperstown (1:02:29).

The 'D' on the Tigers cap is one of the most iconic logos in all of sports. Ty Cobb holds most of the all-time hitting offensive categories. Yet the Tigers have an amazing amount of Hall of Famers around the diamond. Harry Heillman, Al Kaline, Charlie Gehringer, Alan Trammel, and George Kell all were Tigers through and through. They've won 4 World Series and lost 7. We talk about the other great Tigers and the greatest manager in Tiger history. Lance Parrish had a career bWAR of 39.5. It's World Series time, and SSS duty geezer Leigh Allan and his son and west coast correspondent, Will, just naturally talk World Series on the day before it begins, and just as naturally disagree in picking a winner. They also take a look at the rosters of the Diamondbacks and Rangers and match them up with the White Sox lineup to see how many members of the Sox would make an All-Star team also made up of players from just one of those teams (hint: The entire Sox position player share of the team was born in Ciego de Avila, Cuba, on Aug. 3, 1997). There was naturally conversation about former White Sox players who will be taking part in the Series, and how the two Rangers have a combined 2023 bWAR just a hair shy of that of the entire Sox team. There was also discussion of the difficulty of spelling the name of the player received in trade for Marcus Semien, Chris Bassitt, et. al, which isn't easy, so it won't be attempted here. On the actual White Sox front, the two started listing all the teams that will be in the playoffs before the Sox make it there again, with agreement that only Oakland is unlikely. And, in talking about managers and GMs on the move, there was complete agreement that no actually qualified person in his right mind would come to the White Sox while a certain person remains in control. Plus, there's a bonus movie review of The Saint of Second Chances, including agreement about the benefits of pigs delivering baseballs. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The other day, I wrote on the We Can Pod It Out show notes, “an extensive accompanying newsletter that I hope to write” could be part of this episode. Sorry to tell you that it is not, but glad to tell you that my digital journalism urge to do power rankings of baseball managers' celebratory throwability was beaten back. Instead, please enjoy this video of Tsuyoshi Shinjo, whose exploits in Japan we discussed on this show, throwing out Robin Ventura by so much at third base, Ty Wigginton had to look for him. That play was in 2003, when Shinjo hit .193/.238/.246 with no stolen bases and only four extra-base hits in 124 plate appearances… and still was above replacement level (0.2 bWAR) because of his defense. That got me curious, and rather than expand on things said on a podcast, why not stay true to Willets Pen style, and use this as an opportunity to learn something weird. Thanks to Stathead, here are the most plate appearances in a season for players with positive WAR and negative oWAR (the offensive component)…Warren Cromartie, 1979 Montreal Expos: 710 (1.8, -0.3)Rico Brogna, 1999 Phillies: 679 (0.2, -0.2)Bill Collins, 1910 Boston Doves: 660 (0.2, -1.0)Rick Bosetti, 1979 Blue Jays: 657 (0.5, -0.3)Manny Trillo, 1976 Cubs: 649 (0.2, -0.2)…and for Britt's sake…Pedro Feliz, 2006 Giants: 644 (1.8, -0.2)The top one of these seasons for the 21st century, when we have more reliable WAR components, is something for sure. For the Mets, the guy you'd probably expect is on the team list (on which Shinjo's 2003 ranks 52nd in team history), but not at the top…Hubie Brooks, 1983: 624 (0.2, -0.7)Rey Ordoñez, 1999: 588 (2.8, -0.4)Jeromy Burnitz, 2002: 550 (0.1, -0.1)Ordoñez, 1996: 530 (0.9, -0.1)Jeff Francoeur, 2010: 447 (1.1, -0.6)For a full career, Ordoñez ranks 11th in baseball history at 3,407 plate appearances with a 1.2 career WAR and -3.7 career oWAR. The top 10?Tim Foli (1970-85): 6,573 (5.6, -0.3)Neifi Pérez (1996-2007): 5,510 (2.6, -3.4)César Izturis (2001-13): 4,679 (6.1, -0.9)John Corkhill (1883-92): 4,614 (5.1, -2.1)Pedro Feliz (2000-10): 4,544 (5.6, -0.7)Malachi Kittridge (1890-1906): 4,464 (1.6, -0.2)Jimmy McAleer (1889-1907): 4,423 (1.5, -3.0)Mike Lum (1967-81): 3,999 (5.1, -0.1)Hugh Nicol (1881-90): 3,825 (4.1, -0.9)Mark Lemke (1988-98): 3,664 (6.1, -1.7)Kittridge is interesting because his name jumps out, and because he's 45th all-time in career passed balls with 202. But for context, that's one fewer than Hall of Famer Jim O'Rourke, 108 fewer than Hall of Famer Connie Mack, 158 fewer than Hall of Famer Buck Ewing, 218 fewer than Hall of Famer King Kelly, 289 fewer than Hall of Famer Wilbert Robinson, 303 fewer than Hall of Famer Deacon White… and 561 behind all-time passed ball king Pop Snyder.Want to talk about the unbreakable records in sports? Pop Snyder had SEVEN HUNDRED AND SIXTY-THREE PASSED BALLS. Drew Smith threw 780 pitches for the Mets last season. Casey Stengel sure was right about the Mets picking Hobie Landrith at the start of their expansion draft, that without a catcher, you have a lot of passed balls… but in the era he grew up in, it didn't seem to matter. The active leader in passed balls, Yasmani Grandal, has 92. There were seven seasons in the 19th century where that wouldn't have led the league, from Rudy Kemmier's record 114 in 1883 to Doc Bushong's 95 in 1881.Only one post-integration player is even in the top 50 all time for passed balls, and it's eight-time All-Star Lance Parrish, who had 192 of ‘em from 1977-95 with the Tigers, Phillies, Angels, Mariners, Cleveland, Pirates, and Blue Jays.In 600 major league games this year, there's been a total of 31 passed balls. In 1884, there were 3,907 in 3,074 games. So, from 1.27 passed balls per game to 0.05 passed balls per game, all in just a matter of 139 easy years! This is a public episode. All the Cleveland Guardians do is WIN. They took another one from the Chicago White Sox in a game that saw the Guardians jump out early and then piled on before securing the win over the Chicago White Sox. The lead in the division jumps to six games, with the magic number down to seven games for the Guardians with six games yet left against the Kansas City Royals. The three stars today are Josh Naylor, Steven Kwan, and Triston McKenzie. This leads me to ask the question who is the top player this team needs to consider extending this offseason? Next up with talk about Steven Kwan's place in recent Guardians/Indians history. This team has completely, totally, and utterly failed to develop outfielders and Steven Kwan is already top four among all draft or signed and developed outfielders in terms of bWAR in the last 30 years in his FIRST year. Oscar Gonzalez also gets a shout-out for making the top ten already as well. We talk a bit about the roster moves, why it was a bit of a surprise to see them choose to add Will Brennan now, and how he could be a postseason option thanks to an obscure rule. We talk about the Dayton Moore firing. We discuss the 40 man and how little there is to add after all the additions this year. We also focus on how the future is now, but also how the future's so bright. If this team wants to push forward on the rebuild or continue to build from within there are so many avenues to success. It is nice to enjoy this year, but in some regards, it is even better realizing that this is just the beginning of what could be one heck of a run over the next few years. The Guardians made a lot of roster moves over the past few days. We got into all of them from the call-up of Gabriel Arias to the impending return of Oscar Mercado. I focus on the basic fact that it should not matter if a player is right-handed or left-handed if they can't hit. We focus on all the moves and explain why they were made. Next, we talk about the Saturday doubleheader. It was a pair of extremely disappointing games. The Guardians could have had a chance in the second game but seemingly gave up late. We talk about the performances, what went wrong and what few things were positive. We get to talk about the big win on Sunday which saw the continuation of a strong weekend for Franmil Reyes and the best start of the year for Triston McKenzie. We also get into some minor league talk. While Nolan Jones and Will Brennan are the players most know are performing well. But we spent some time on one of the hottest hitters in the Guardians minors Micah Pries. They missed all of 19 and 20 but is currently second in the Guardians minors in home runs in just his second minor league season after coming out of a tiny baseball program that currently has produced a total of .03 bWAR and just 50 games total in the big leagues and Pries has a chance to the greatest player in that program's history. Baseball is a sport that goes by the numbers more than any other. And for good reason - there are lots and lots of numbers. The ability to measure and compare player and team performances over time generates some great baseball conversations AND arguments! We discovered a newly written book by first time author David A. Gordon entitled 'Baseball Generations: Career Value Index - A New Look at the Hall of Fame and Rating the Greatest Players of All Time'We recommend reading it as it presents a more refined argument than bWAR, fWAR, or JAWS - all of which are good in their own way. CVI is based on bWAR but focuses on player seasons above 5 WAR. This does seem to separate the players with a couple of monster years from those that had more years of 5+ WAR. David Gordon also has come up with a manner to penalize players associated with PED's - the first scale we've ever seen and it's better than not having any way to evaluate alleged PED users. 1) Long-term extensions with teams and players going deep into their 30s never work out, but I am still all for resigning Jose Ramirez. I go deep on why his desire to stay in Cleveland is more believable than with Francisco Lindor stating the same thing. I talk about why Jose might want to stay and how we all have to accept that if we are happy now we can't complain when the natural aging curve happens. 2) The 1991 draft was the last Hank Peters draft. He was GM for four years and had three of the best drafts in the history of the Indians. We look at the best late-round picks and some interesting numbers from the class. Along with the draft in general it went 94 rounds, and one of the teams drafting in the 94th round ended up with a net negative WAR for the draft with their top pick being future Indians reliever Alvin Morman. 3) We dig into the most successful first-rounder in team history and show how the Indians utterly dominated the 1991 draft. Since Jose Ramirez is the Indians best pure hitter since Manny Ramirez it only makes sense to talk about his draft class. The Indians drafted one of the top 5 players by bWAR in five of the first seven rounds in what turned out to be a very strong class. We also try to figure out if Damian Jackson signed or not as a 44th rounder. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. 1) First segment, why it is unlikely that Nolan Jones or Ty Freeman get traded this offseason. We talk about the players we would hate to see go but also understand to get someone you got to trade someone. 2) Time to review the 1981 MLB draft, the Indians drafted George Alpert who after three years of struggles with the Indians. He would switch to football to play wide receiver at Penn State. It was an odd draft with the two picks coming from nontraditional programs and future Indians Joe Carter arguably the biggest name in round one. The biggest name in the class is a future Hall of Famer who was a basketball recruit to a small school.3) While the Indians struck out in round one. Two months ago, the NL MVP was clearly Jacob deGrom or - if you insisted on voting for a position player - Fernando Tatis, Jr. Well, things change fast in baseball, and the race is both wide open and fascinating. Pesach and Scott offer their insights as to where it's going, and discuss whether Zack Wheeler can be the MVP (after all, he's got the highest bWAR) while boasting only the sixth best ERA in the National League. Also pay attention to what they think about Joey Votto's Hall of Fame chances, and whether he's a shoo-in or an also-ran. As for Pesach's view of the Field of Dreams game between the Yankees and the White Sox? He holds back a little because this is a family podcast, but he. does. not. like. it. As the season passes game 70, Pesach and Scott look carefully at what may be MLB's most fascinating division, the National League East. Jacob deGrom may be having the greatest pitching season in history and can lead a strong starting staff to the Promised Land... if only the team could actually hit. (Although Pesach says that the Mets' terrible hitting is actually a hopeful sign.) The Braves can hit but can't pitch, the Nats have to decide by the trading deadline if they're a young up-and-coming team or an old this-ain't-the-future team, and the Marlins have a great pitching staff and OK hitting but still have no real future. And why does Zack Wheeler of the Phillies have stats that aren't even close to deGrom's numbers but still has almost an identical bWAR? Plus: Tyler "Boo Hoo" Glasnow, another wonderful Target Field experience, and no coffee on Tuesday's train from New York to Philadelphia. If you want breaking news like that, there's no better place to find it than here!
LISTEN TO THIS CLASSIC EPISODE OF THE BASEBALL RABBI PODCAST! Al Kaline's bWAR was close to 93, making him one of the greatest right fielders in history. But when you look at his career stats, it's a little bit difficult to figure out how his WAR got that high. How can we explain his greatness? And in honor of Kaline's great play as a young Tiger (he won the batting title when he was 20), Pesach and Scott list their favorite teenage seasons of all time. Dr. K, Tony C, Bryce Harper, Juan Soto, Mel Ott and more: listen up to see if you agree.
Pesach and Scott (with an assist from Moshe Schorr) have a terrific conversation with noted Fangraphs scribe Dan Szymborski about projections (remember, he created ZiPS), the upcoming CBA negotiations, rule changes, narratives for the upcoming season, how he got his job (we know, every listener is probably jealous), the differences between fWAR and bWAR, the place of the Negro Leagues in baseball history, his favorite baseball books, and more. Remember there used to be a MLB statistic for GWRBI - Game Winning RBI's? The one that gives your team a lead it never relinquishes. Because players could get the GWRBI conceivably (and in reality) in the first inning @MLB junked it after 1988 which was about 8 years too long. One of our 'Almost' guys Keith Hernandez has been in no way helped by the stat that he has the all time record for GWRBIs. Because and rightly so, it's a dumb stat! Are pitcher starts as important as they used to be? How about appearances? Are RBI's an overvalued statistic? How about Sacrifice Flies which have changed a few times over the years. With better analytics and data baseball statistics have become more complicated and difficult to understand. Do you know how to calculate WAR (wins above replacement)? Or the difference between fWAR and bWAR? Or FIP (fielding independent of pitching)? Few fans do or are necessarily all that interested. Fans still like some of the old fashioned stats - HRs, BA, RBI's, K's. We do too but the modern game of baseball calls for modernized stats and progress will not be halted in the ever present search for better players and better player production. This is our longest episode so far. We did not expect it but once we get to talking it's hard to stop!Correction: Hack Wilson had 191 RBI's in 1930. David Peterson (not Doug) is the potential #5 starter for the Mets.
From Todd Helton and Larry Walker all the way down to...Dante Bichette? Drew, Patrick, and Makayla put the All-Time Colorado Rockies into tiers and react to their placement according to bWAR.
On November 23rd, Luis Tiant turned 80 years old, and what better way to celebrate than to hear from the man himself in conversation with the Baseball Rabbi! Apart from Tiant's stories and insights, Pesach and Scott discuss his Hall of Fame case, using Catfish Hunter as a fascinating foil; how can two pitchers with almost identical stats have a difference in bWAR of about 25 wins, and a smaller but similar difference on Fangraphs? The answer will provide insight into how WAR actually works. Plus: Pesach demonstrates that the Negro Leagues are, if anything, underrated - and what the various baseball internet sites need to do about it now. (You can watch the full 75 minute interview, where Luis Tiant talks about his unique windup, what it was like to leave the Red Sox and join the hated Yankees, how often he would intentionally hit batters, what should be done to remember the Negro Leagues, which major leaguer never ever cursed - and much more! Just go to https://www.patreon.com/baseballrabbipodcast.)
We talk about the retirement of Brandon Guyer who is 7th all time in bWAR from the University of Virginia. We talk about his Tribe time and the players the Indians traded for him. We then dig into the first announced 55 man roster before then spending a little more time on the recent three additions which take the roster up to 58 with just 2 spots left open and which could stay that way to allow trades to occur later in the year. Jimmy Arvan comes back on as a guest for a varied class of inductees. First, Vik canonizes the unsung component of the Backyard Sports catalog (2:57). Jimmy takes us back over 100 years to a college football legend whose winning ways and dour demeanor made him the Bronze Age Belichick (26:42). Finally, Jacob enters a baseball player worth 2.1 bWAR into The Canon because his effect on his hometown team goes far beyond his meager statistics (45:07).
We take a deeper look at the great Early Wynn. A man whose Hall of Fame journey does not take off until he is nearly 30 and comes to the Indians. We focus on Mel Harder who is third all time in bWAR for the Indians yet made a bigger impact as a coach. We look at those pitches mentioned above who he helped mature into some of the best arms in baseball. We take a deeper look at the Early Wynn deal, talk about Luke Easter who is the reason why the indians traded Mickey Vernon back to the the Senators in little after a year after getting him in the Wynn deal. Then we focus on Lemon and McDowell trying to figure out who gets the 5th spot in the Indians all time rotation. Lemon a Hall of Famer who was a infielder who missed time due to World War 2 or is it the flame throwing lefty whose peak was better than Lemons. Learn more about your ad choices. Throughout the shutdown of MLB caused by the Covid-19 panic, ATW will be doing looks back at various aspects of franchise history, from big trades to award winners and snubs to interesting pennant races and more. In the first episode of the series, Greg and Josh look back the the Blue Jays' history with the draft. They discuss the early success that turned into mystifying ineptitude and its impact on the slow build of the expansion squad, some interesting "ones who got away," some picks that for various reasons were poorly made and had poor results, a stretch of really strong picks in the 1990s, and a look at the top bWAR earners in club history.
Finishing up the All-Time Indians top 5 in centerfield. This is the best group of any in Indians history. Three of the top six players all time in terms of bWAR were centerfielders. Mike Trout and Cody Bellinger are the 2019 AL and NL MVPs. Trout took home his 3rd career MVP award as he edged out Alex Bregman of the Astros, despite missing the last few weeks of the season with a foot injury. In his eight full seasons, Mike Trout has finished first or second in the MVP voting seven times. Only one player has more MVPs than Mike Trout: Barry Bonds. Cody Bellinger took home his first MVP award after an elite season on both sides of the ball. Bellinger's defensive versatility shined as he won a Gold Glove in right field (not his natural position), while being able to slide over center field or first base when necessary. Bellinger's 9.0 bWAR led all of baseball. All this (and more) on today's episode.

The Rangers have been rolling through the competition lately, and find themselves in playoff position (4 months before the playoffs start). It’s been fun! Let’s appreciate Mike Minor, who leads the entire league in bWAR by over a full win. Will we be buyers at the deadline?? JD probably says no, but Mike has another idea (it’s not our money!). Hunter Freakin Pence is 36 and super good, and that’s wild. Ariel Jurado and Adrian Sampson being good changes everything, so kudos to the coaching staff and front office. Long live JD! We welcome Sean Forman from Baseball Reference, David Cameron from FanGraphs, Greg Matthews from openWAR, Rob McQuown and Jonathan Judge from Baseball Prospectus to the show. With all the recent discussion about Wins Above Replacement statistics, we wanted to get people who create and maintain the statistics together to talk about how their respective stats are created and calculated. We talk about what replacement level is, positional adjustments, how to accurately portray confidence in the precision of the statistic.
Domenic, E.J. and Scott discuss the Yankees' signing of OF/DH Matt Holliday. This episode is a little short at 24 minutes. We had some technical problems and lost our second segment, where we debated fWAR vs. bWAR. As a result, the episode ends a little abruptly. We apologize for that, and hope to record a second episode later this week if Yankees news breaks.Want to help us out? Please share is podcast with at least one of your friends.
