What were their three famous gifts all about?Matthew 2:1-2 (NLT) 1 Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, 2 “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.”First of all, a few trivial facts:Only mentioned in MatthewNever says there were three of them (We three Kings…)Most likely not kings (astrologers is a better translation, as we'll see)In Jerusalem because that's where they would have expected to find a king(IVP Bible Background Commentary: NT, Second Edition) The Magi had come to Jerusalem because that was where they expected to find any Judean king—but Herod had apparently not had any new sons lately.Probably alludes to Nu 24:17: "A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel."Bigger question: who were the Magi?Likely pagan Zoroastrian priests or scholars from Persia, skilled in astrology and prophecy.Zoroastrianism is one of the world's oldest continuously practiced religions, originating in ancient Persia (modern-day Iran) around 1200–1000 BCE. What does it look like to be faithful? More specifically, what does it look like to be faithful amidst our limitations This week as we continue in our sermon series through the Letter to the Philippians, we will see both the limitations and faithfulness of the Apostle Paul, and together consider how the Good New of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, enables us to be faithful amidst even our limitations.

The gospel is the greatest news ever to hit the planet. Whether we are called to the ministry of evangelism or not, we are all called to “do the work of an evangelist.” (2 Timothy 4:5). We all have people in our lives who don't know Jesus and because we know the truth we have a responsibility to share the gospel with others. It is vital that all followers of Jesus know and understand the gospel. It is called “the gospel of grace' because salvation is a free gift for all who believe and repent. We need to prioritize our own personal understanding of the gospel message so we are ready in season and out of season to preach the good news the way Jesus and the Apostles presented it. Salvation is a free gift, but discipleship costs us everything. When we see what Jesus sacrificed so we could be saved, it moves us to sacrifice everything as our act of worship and devotion to Him. We hope this message from Phil Mason blesses you to carry the good news everywhere you go.

Tim Donnelly says the College Football Playoff selection committee clearly got it wrong by leaving out Florida State football from the CFP despite going 13-0 and winning the ACC Championship, and that being another day removed from the situation doesn't make it feel any better. Tim says the injury to FSU quarterback Jordan Travis should not factor into the decision making by the committee's decision to leave out FSU for Alabama football or Texas football because both of those schools have losses. Tim Donnelly and Dennis Cox discusses the new proposal by NCAA president Charlie Baker to allow schools and athletes to enter into NIL deals that will allow the schools to pay athletes directly. Tim & Dennis wonder if this is a way for higher end schools to separate in college football, but also a chance for the NCAA to skirt around paying players directly as employees.
