We also talk a little bit about the winners and losers in the WBC so far, and go into the insane tie-breaker language for the tournament. Season Preview coming…soon! Andy completes the home and home with Tom Loxas who had him on his podcast a few weeks ago and Tom stops by to talk about the Cubs, including who is going to fill the big Seiya sized hole in right field to start the season, what are the Cubs going to do with David Bote, what's the smartest way to set up the opening day roster, and do the Cubs need a second lefty in the bullpen if the options are all bad? What does a nine-game spring training winning streak really mean, and do we really have to go through the motions of letting Adrian Sampson start the season in the bullpen? They talk about TV blackouts, Andy compares Pete Crow-Armstrong to one of his dogs (in a good way), they try to figure out the Cubs lineup and worry about one of the unintended consequences of the pitch clock. All that and more. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/desipio/message

The Vikings then didn’t let Jared Goff and the Lions cross midfield. Dalvin Cook rushed for 96 yards and a score before leaving with a shoulder injury for the Vikings, who fell behind 14-0 and 24-14. Smith, who missed practice all week because of a hip injury, intercepted it at the 30 and returned it to the 12. Chicago had Herbert run, then downed the ball twice before Santos nailed a 30-yarder as time expired. Colts 20, Chiefs 17 – Ryan drives Colts to 1st win with 20-17 comeback vs Chiefs Matt Ryan threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to rookie Jelani Woods with 24 seconds left to give the Indianapolis Colts a 20-17 comeback victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Indy sealed it with a late interception — Patrick Mahomes’ first of the season as the Chiefs fell to 2-1. Mahomes lost for only the third time in September despite leading almost the entire second half. Ryan won it with a brilliant 16-play, 76-yard drive that was aided by a personal foul call on Chris Jones following a third-down sack. It was a bit puzzling at the time. After the Spartans were run over for the second straight week to fall to 4-3 in their last seven games, the 10-year megadeal is looking even more questionable. The coach-as-savior mentality is rampant in college football and it is causing desperate schools to make costly decisions, fraught with risk. Golf – Spieth goes 5-0 as Americans rule Presidents Cup again The Presidents Cup stays with the Americans, just like it always does. The Americans finished off a five-point victory. Jordan Spieth capped off a perfect week at Quail Hollow by going 5-0. His match helped set the tone for the Americans. The International team already was depleted by players who defected to Saudi-funded LIV Golf and were not eligible. It still showed plenty of fight. It just doesn’t have a cup to show for it. The Americans won for the ninth straight time, and their only loss was in 1998 since the matches began in 1994. Golf – Champions – Flesch wins PGA Tour Champions event at Pebble Beach Steve Flesch birdied the 18th hole at Pebble Beach to win the Pure Insurance Championship for his second PGA Tour Champions victory of the season. Flesch birdied the first four holes and five on the front nine in a strong start, then stalled on the back. But he got the only birdie he needed on the par-5 finishing hole for a one-stroke victory over Ernie Els, Steven Alker and Paul Stankowski. Flesch closed with a 4-under 68 for a three-round total of 11-under 205 and earned $330,000. The 55-year-old won the Mitsubishi Electric Classic in May. NASCAR – Reddick wins NASCAR playoff race in long, tiring Texas day Tyler Reddick opened the round of 12 in NASCAR’s playoff with a victory at Texas. His win comes a week after being one of the first four Cup drivers knocked out of title contention. No contender won any of the first three races of the playoffs, a first in any round in this postseason format. The trend continued with the eliminated Reddick leading 53 of the final 54 laps on a long race day that went into the night. There were a track-record 17 cautions, a record 36 lead changes, a 56-minute red flag for lightning and multiple tire issues leading to crashes. NASCAR – Tumultuous, tiring start to NASCAR’s round of 12 at Texas The 334 laps at Texas Motor Speedway provided quite a tumultuous start to the NASCAR playoff round of 12. There were a lot of tire issues that contributed to a track-record 16 cautions. There was also a 56-minute red flag for lightning, and a record 36 lead changes among 19 drivers. Chase Elliott entered as the points leader, and was ahead in the race around the midway part when he had hard contact and a fiery finish. Playoff contender Christopher Bell also got knocked out after a tire issue. And there were some bumping between William Byron and Denny Hamlin. Osborn for the go-ahead, 28-yard touchdown with 45 seconds remaining, and the Minnesota Vikings rallied to beat the Detroit Lions 28-24. Osborn blew by former Vikings cornerback Mike Hughes on a corner route to snag the in-stride pass and cruise across the goal line to give Minnesota the lead for the first time. The Vikings then didn’t let Jared Goff and the Lions cross midfield. Dalvin Cook rushed for 96 yards and a score before leaving with a shoulder injury for the Vikings, who fell behind 14-0 and 24-14. Bears 23, Texans 20 – Smith INT sets up game-ending FG as Bears beat Texans 23-20 Roquan Smith set up Cairo Santos’ game-ending field goal when he intercepted Davis Mills deep in Houston territory, and the Chicago Bears beat former coach Lovie Smith and the Texans 23-20. Khalil Herbert ran for a career-high 157 yards and two touchdowns. The Texans had third-and-1 at their 26 when defensive tackle Angelo Blackson tipped a pass intended for Rex Burkhead. Ryan earned his first win with the Colts in their home opener by throwing for two scores, both to Woods. Jacob DeGrom was rock solid tonight, but not good enough to take down the Cubs. DeGrom had ten strikeouts and only allowed three hits through six innings, but it was Adrian Sampson who got the win. Just to give you an idea of how dominant DeGrom has been over the last few seasons, tonight was his 39th straight start allowing 3 or fewer earned runs. Jim Scott is the only pitcher to have a streak as long, back in 1913-14 for the White Sox, according to Mets Beat reporter Anthony DiComo. The Cubs will go for the sweep tomorrow. Luke Stuckmeyer, Cody Delmendo and Ryan Herrera break it all down, while discussing the small chance DeGrom could headline this Cubs' rotation next season. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Houston Astros 6, Detroit Tigers 3 Chicago Cubs 4, New York Mets 1 Chicago White Sox 4, Colorado Rockies 2 Astros 6, Tigers 3 – Astros’ Brown hurls 6 strong innings to beat hometown Tigers Rookie Hunter Brown pitched six strong innings in his hometown and the Houston Astros beat the Detroit Tigers 6-3 on Tuesday. Yordan Alvarez homered and scored three times for the Astros, who are 6-0 against the Tigers this season. Brown allowed two runs. Brown made his second career start in front of a loud group of friends and family. He grew up in suburban Detroit and attended Wayne State, about a mile from Comerica Park. Ryan Pressly struck out the side in the ninth for his 27th save. Tigers starter Drew Hutchison allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings. White Sox 4, Rockies 2 – Jiménez, Abreu homer as surging White Sox beat Rockies 4-2 Eloy Jiménez hit a three-run homer and Miguel Cairo directed the Chicago White Sox to another victory, topping the Colorado Rockies 4-2. Michael Kopech pitched five effective innings as Chicago remained three games back of AL Central-leading Cleveland, which rallied for a 3-1 win against the Los Angeles Angels. José Abreu also went deep, and Liam Hendriks handled the ninth for his 33rd save. The White Sox improved to 10-4 since Cairo moved from bench coach to acting manager after Tony La Russa stepped away to deal with a heart issue. Cubs 4, Mets 1 – Mets come up empty for deGrom and lose to Cubs again, 4-1 Jacob deGrom was outpitched by journeyman Adrian Sampson, and the frustrated New York Mets mustered little offense again in a 4-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Ian Happ homered deep into the second deck on a 99 mph heater from deGrom, and No. 9 batter David Bote added his second home run of the season for the Cubs, who won the series opener 5-2 on Monday. One night later, the scuffling Mets squandered another potential chance to increase their slim NL East lead over Atlanta, which played later in San Francisco. New York is 5-6 in a 16-game stretch against Washington, Pittsburgh, Miami and Chicago — all four of those teams are more than 20 games under .500 this season. Pete Alonso homered late for the Mets. Today Houston (Javier 8-9) at Detroit (Wentz 1-1), 1:10 p.m.               WSJM/WCSY 12:50 Colorado (Freeland 8-9) at Chicago White Sox (Cease 14-6), 2:10 p.m. Chicago Cubs (Smyly 6-8) at N.Y. Mets (Peterson 7-4), 7:10 p.m. MLB – Still no timetable for La Russa’s return to White Sox dugout The White Sox say manager Tony La Russa will watch the team’s home series against Colorado from a suite while he awaits clearance to return to the dugout. The 77-year-old La Russa is on the mend after leaving the White Sox on Aug. 30 to deal with a heart issue. La Russa rejoined the team in Oakland on Sunday and then flew home with the club for the two-game set against the Rockies. There is no timetable for the Hall of Famer when it comes to returning to the stress of in-game managing. Chicago begins a four-game trip on Thursday in Cleveland. NFL – Preseason rest led to Week 1 rust for several top QBs Preseason rest appeared to lead to a little bit of rust in Week 1 for several of the NFL’s top quarterbacks. More than one-third of the league’s Week 1 starting quarterbacks didn’t play a single snap in the preseason and most of those 11 QBs didn’t play anywhere close to their usual form. Whether the poor results were a result of rust or other factors isn’t clear but the poor results are. The only QBs to rest the entire preseason and end up on the winning side in Week 1 were Minnesota’s Kirk Cousins, Justin Herbert of the Chargers and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson. NFL – Amazon Prime ready to kick off ‘Thursday Night Football’ Thursday night’s game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs on Prime Video kicks off an 11-year agreement between Amazon and the NFL and marks the first time the league has sold a package of games to a streaming service. Amazon won the rights to the prime-time package last March. It was originally supposed to begin in 2023, along with the rest of the league’s broadcasting contracts, but two months later it was announced that Amazon would take over the Thursday night package from Fox a year earlier. WNBA – WNBA Playoffs – WNBA Finals (best of 5) Last Night Las Vegas Aces 85, Connecticut Sun 71                                      (LV leads 2-0) Aces 85, Sun 71 – Aces beat Sun 85-71, take 2-0 series lead in WNBA Finals A’ja Wilson had 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Las Vegas Aces to an 85-71 victory over the Connecticut Sun in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals. The Aces are now one victory away from the franchise’s first championship with Game 3 on Thursday in Connecticut. Las Vegas was swept in the 2008 Finals when the team was still in San Antonio. The Aces were also swept in 2020. Chelsea Gray added 21 for the Aces while Kelsey Plum rebounded from an awful Game 1 to score 20 points. Courtney Williams scored 18 points to lead Connecticut. WNBA – Richardson visits Moscow as Griner, Whelan remain jailed Bill Richardson, who has worked to secure the releases of WNBA star Brittney Griner and another jailed American, Paul Whelan, visited Moscow this week and held meetings with Russian leaders. That’s according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday night. Richardson is a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and a frequent emissary in hostage negotiations. American officials have continued to press Russia to release Griner, who was sentenced last month to nine years in prison in a drug possession case, and Whelan, a Michigan corporate security executive serving a 16-year sentence on espionage-related charges. The U.S. government regards both as wrongfully detained. NBA/WNBA – Suns owner Sarver suspended 1 year, fined $10M after probe The NBA suspended Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury owner Robert Sarver for one year and fined him $10 million after an investigation found that he had engaged in what the league called “workplace misconduct and organizational deficiencies.” The findings come nearly a year after the NBA asked a law firm to investigate allegations that Sarver had a history of racist, misogynistic and hostile incidents over his nearly two-decade tenure overseeing the franchise. The league said the results of the investigation were based on interviews with 320 individuals and more than 80,000 documents and other materials. Sarver apologized for “words and actions that offended our employees,” though he disagreed with some of the report’s findings. NCAAFB – Big Ten – Joseph wants Nebraska head coaching job beyond this season Mickey Joseph says he wants to be Nebraska’s next head football coach and not just on an interim basis for the next nine games. Joseph met with the media for the first time since taking over for the fired Scott Frost. Joseph says when he accepted the interim position, he did it thinking it would be an opportunity to work toward becoming the permanent head coach. Joseph’s audition starts Saturday with a home game against former conference rival and sixth-ranked Oklahoma. NHL – Blackhawks D Jake McCabe sidelined by spine surgery Blackhawks defenseman Jake McCabe will miss the start of the season after he had cervical spine surgery. Team physician Michael Terry says McCabe is expected to return in 10 to 12 weeks. There was no word on when exactly McCabe had the surgery. Forward prospect Jalen Luypen also will miss the start of the season because of a left rotator cuff injury. The team says he is expected to return in 14 to 18 weeks. NHL – Quebec politicos: New Habs captain Suzuki must learn French Several of Quebec’s major party leaders say new Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki needs to learn French. The Canadiens announced the appointment of the 23-year-old Ontario native as the team’s captain earlier this week. He has played for Montreal the past three seasons. Liberal Leader Dominique Anglade told reporters it would be a good thing if Suzuki learned French. Parti Québécois Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon described Suzuki as a “very good choice” for captain but added that it is important for the Habs captain to learn French. Golf – PGA/LIV – New PGA Tour season starts in California, LIV to Chicago After two weeks of an offseason, the PGA Tour is ready for a new season. It starts with the Fortinet Championship in Napa, California. This will be the 10th and final year of a wraparound season. Max Homa is the defending champion. He won twice last season and will be making his Presidents Cup debut next week. Hideki Matsuyama also is playing. LIV Golf resumes outside Chicago at Rich Harvest Farms. The LPGA Tour is in Oregon while Rory McIlroy makes his debut in the Italian Open at Marco Simone. That’s the site of next year’s Ryder Cup. The Cubs put runners at second and third with two outs in the 11th but Yimi Garcia struck out P.J. Higgins. Tonight Chicago Cubs (Stroman 3-6) at Toronto (Gausman 9-9), 7:07 p.m. Seattle (Kirby 5-3) at Detroit (Manning 1-1), 7:10 p.m.                        WSJM/WCSY 6:50 Kansas City (Singer 7-4) at Chicago White Sox (Giolito 10-7), 8:10 p.m. MLB – Cubs put Sampson, Steele on restricted list, add Little The Chicago Cubs have put right-hander Adrian Sampson and left-hander Justin Steele on the restricted list before their game at Toronto. Foreign nationals who aren’t vaccinated against COVID-19 aren’t allowed to enter Canada, save for limited exceptions that require a 14-day quarantine. Unvaccinated baseball players are placed on the restricted list, where they are not paid and do not accrue major league service time. Chicago added left-hander Brendon Little to begin the three-game series Monday night. Little was 3-3 with a 4.15 ERA in 29 relief appearances at Triple-A Iowa, recording one save in two chances. MLB – MLB players’ association trying to unionize minor leaguers The Major League Baseball Players Association is attempting to unionize minor leaguers, reversing decades of opposition. The players’ association says it is circulating union authorization cards among players with minor league contracts to form a separate bargaining unit from the big leaguers. While the average major league salary is above $4 million, players with minor league contracts earn as little as $400 a week during the six-month season. Signed cards from 30% of the estimated 5,000 to 6,500 minor leaguers would allow the union to file a petition to the National Labor Relations Board asking for an authorization election. Tennis – US Open – Serena Williams not done yet; wins 1st match at US Open Serena Williams has won her match in the first round of the U.S. Open. Williams beat Danka Kovinic 6-3, 6-3 under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium. Williams is a 23-time Grand Slam champion who turns 41 next month and has said she is ready to move on from her playing days. After her victory Monday night, Williams said she has been intentionally vague about whether the U.S. Open will be her last tournament — and wants to keep it that way. She will play again Wednesday in the second round of singles against No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit. Tennis – US Open – US Open champs Medvedev, Murray win; Ukrainian stuns Halep Daniil Medvedev had an easy start to his U.S. Open title defense, beating Stefan Kozlov 6-2, 6-4, 6-0. Simona Halep had another early exit, this time in a memorable first tour-level win for Ukrainian Daria Snigur, who upset the No. 7 seed 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. The top-seeded Medvedev looked just as strong as he did in sweeping past Novak Djokovic in last year’s final for his first major title. Andy Murray was another early winner, 10 years after winning the first of his three Grand Slam titles in Flushing Meadows. He beat No. 24 seed Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina 7-5, 6-3, 6-3. IIHF – US set for hockey showdown with Canada after routing Swiss The United States has warmed up for its group showdown with Canada by blitzing Switzerland 9-0 at the world women’s ice hockey championship in Denmark. The U.S. matched Canada with 3-0 records. Their Group A closer on Tuesday is also in Herning. It is expected to be a preview of the final on Sunday. Czechia also improved to its record to 3-0 after dominating winless Germany 6-0 in Group B. Finland got its first win at Japan’s expense by 9-3. Sweden confirmed a top-two place behind the Czechs after beating Hungary 3-2 in its second consecutive shootout win. NCAAFB – Harbaugh plans to start McNamara, McCarthy in opening games Jim Harbaugh has decided to start Big Ten championship-winning quarterback Cade McNamara when No. 8 Michigan opens its season Saturday at home against Colorado State. Harbaugh has chosen to give J.J. McCarthy the Wolverines’ first snap when they host Hawaii the following week. McNamara started every game last season as a junior, leading Michigan to a win over rival Ohio State for the first time in a decade and to its first Big Ten title since 2004. McCarthy played in 11 games last year as a highly touted freshman. NCAAFB – All-America OL Patterson questionable for Irish at No. 2 OSU Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman says offensive lineman Jarrett Patterson is questionable for the fifth-ranked Fighting Irish’s opener against No. 2 Ohio State. Patterson has been dealing with an injury to his right foot for about two weeks, but Freeman did expect the fifth-year senior to practice this week. Patterson was one of the best centers in the country last year for Notre Dame and a preseason All-American. He was listed as the starter at left guard on the Irish’s first depth chart of the season. NCAAFB – Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud: ‘I barely touched my potential’ C.J. Stroud was an untested freshman trying to win the starting quarterback job at Ohio State at this time last year. The 20-year-old California native is now a Heisman Trophy favorite as the 2022 season opens and is already projected to be a first-round NFL draft pick next year. He wants to win a national championship before he moves on. He knows Ohio State has the offensive fire power to do it. Stroud’s confidence and more vocal leadership displayed in the summer and in preseason camp impressed his teammates, who voted him a captain. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Detroit Tigers 9, Texas Rangers 8 Arizona Diamondbacks 3, Chicago White Sox 2 Milwaukee Brewers 9, Chicago Cubs 7 Tigers 9, Rangers 8 – Garcia’s hit streak ends at 23, Rangers fall to Tigers Adolis Garcia struck out during a Texas rally that fell short in the ninth inning, ending his 23-game hitting streak as the Detroit Tigers held off the Rangers 9-8. Garcia’s streak was the longest in the American League this season. He went 0 for 3 with two walks and fell one game short of matching the longest hitting string ever by a Cuban-born big leaguer, set by Rafael Palmeiro in 1994 for Baltimore. Harold Castro drove in five runs as the Tigers built a 9-0 lead in the sixth. Corey Seager homered twice for Texas. Detroit took a 9-2 lead into eighth before Garcia had an RBI groundout and Kole Calhoun hit a two-run homer. After Texas closed to 9-8 in the ninth, Garcia fanned with a runner on second. D’Backs 3, White Sox 2 – Diamondbacks down scuffling White Sox 3-2 to finish sweep Jake McCarthy hit a tiebreaking double in the ninth inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks completed a three-game sweep of the struggling Chicago White Sox with a 3-2 victory. Diamondbacks rookie Stone Garrett launched his first major league home run and Sergio Alcántara also went deep for Arizona, which earned its first interleague sweep since 2019. Noé Ramirez pitched a scoreless eighth and Ian Kennedy got three outs for his ninth save. Kendall Graveman took the loss in relief of Dylan Cease, who allowed Arizona’s two solo homers while striking out eight in a career-high eight innings. Alcántara hit his fourth homer of the season in the eighth to tie it at 2. Brewers 9, Cubs 7 – Yelich, Wong HR, Mitchell’s 1st hit, Brewers beat Cubs 9-7 Christian Yelich and Kolten Wong each homered for the second straight game and 2020 first-round draft pick Garrett Mitchell drove in two runs with the first hit of his big league career, leading the Milwaukee Brewers over the Chicago Cubs 9-7. Brewers starter Eric Lauer worked five innings, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out four. Chicago got 3 1/3 out of right-hander Adrian Sampson, who allowed just a run despite five hits and a walk. Chicago reliever Sean Newcomb gave up six runs in an inning as Cubs lost for the sixth time in their last nine games. Tonight Chicago Cubs (Assad 0-0) at Toronto (Berríos 9-5), 7:07 p.m. White Sox and Tigers are off NFL – National Football League – Preseason week 3 Saturday Chicago Bears 21, Cleveland Browns 20 Indianapolis Colts 21, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 10 Yesterday Pittsburgh Steelers 19, Detroit Lions 9 Steelers 19, Lions 9 – Trubisky makes case for QB job as Steelers top Lions 19-9 Mitch Trubisky staked his claim to be the Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback, throwing for 160 yards and a touchdown in a 19-9 win over Detroit in the NFL’s preseason finale. Trubisky was at his best late in the first half, leading the Steelers on a 92-yard drive that ended with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Steven Sims. Rookie Kenny Pickett played well in the second half for Ptitsburgh but it appears Trubisky has the inside track to be the starter when the Steelers begin the regular season in Cincinnati on Sept. 11. WNBA – WNBA Playoffs – WNBA Semifinals (best of 5) Yesterday Connecticut Sun 68, Chicago Sky 63                                          (CON leads 1-0) Sun 68, Sky 63 – Bonner scores 15 as Sun beat Sky in Game 1 of WNBA semis DeWanna Bonner had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the Connecticut to a 68-63 win over the Chicago Sky in Game 1 of their WNBA semifinals series. Candace Parker had 19 points and 18 rebounds for the Sky, and Kahleah Copper scored 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting. LLWS – Hawaii wins Little League title, beating Curacao 13-3 Hawaii got back-to-back homers from Kekoa Payanal and Kama Angell in the first inning, sparking a 13-3 win in just four innings Sunday over Curacao in the championship of the Little League World Series. The LLWS title is Hawaii’s fourth. It won in 2018 and this same Honolulu team finished third last year, when COVID-19 travel restrictions prevented international teams from participating. Hawaii starter Jaron Lancaster was dominant once again as he threw all four innings, while only allowing three runs, three hits and striking out 10 Curacao hitters. NASCAR – Dillon, Blaney nab last playoff spots at rain-soaked Daytona Austin Dillon avoided a massive wreck in the rain to win at Daytona International Speedway and snag a playoff spot in the Cup Series’ regular-season finale. Dillon passed Austin Cindric for the lead with three laps to go after a 3 hour, 20 minute red flag for inclement weather. It was an aggressive move that capped a drama-filled race. Martin Truex Jr. was the biggest loser. Truex looked like he would secure the final postseason berth when the skies opened up, but he faded once the race restarted and allowed Ryan Blaney to make up ground in a wild points scramble. Tennis – US Open – Williams sisters to face Czech pair in US Open doubles Serena and Venus Williams were drawn to face the Czech pair of Lucie Hradecka and Linda Noskova in the first round of doubles at the U.S. Open. The U.S. Tennis Association announced the doubles brackets Sunday, a day before the tournament begins.Doubles competition will begin on Wednesday. It is the first doubles event for the Williams sisters together since the 2018 French Open. Noskova is a 17-year-old who never has won a Grand Slam match in singles or doubles. NCAAFB – Free beer was right call at Dublin game says catering firm In the postgame analysis, free beer at the Nebraska-Northwestern game in Ireland was the right call. The freebies flowed for two hours during Northwestern’s 31-28 victory on Saturday, and the catering company for Aviva Stadium hailed its workers for keeping the refreshments coming. Levy UK + Ireland said Sunday the problem was with its payment provider, SumUp, and not with the stadium’s internet connection. Levy, a sports and hospitality caterer whose other clients include English Premier League soccer clubs, did not give an estimate of lost revenue. Golf – PGA – McIlroy storms from 6 back to win FedEx Cup and $18 million Rory McIlroy is the FedEx Cup champion for the third time. He stormed from a record-tying six shots behind to win the Tour Championship and capture the $18 million prize. Scottie Scheffler never trailed all week until the 70th hole. He built the six-shot lead Sunday morning with four birdies in six holes to complete the third round. But he was never on his game and made only one birdie in a round of 73. McIlroy shot a 66. He says winning felt even more significant because of the tumultuous year caused by Saudi-funded LIV Golf. Cycling – Kenyan cyclist dies in crash during gravel race in Vermont Kenyan cyclist Sule Kangangi has died in a crash during a gravel race in Vermont. Kangangi was competing in the Vermont Overland race on Saturday when he died in a crash at high speed. The wife of president-elect William Ruto of Kenya posted on Twitter that she was shocked to learn the sad news that he had passed away after a tragic crash. Houston’s run total tied for the second most in team history — the Astros scored 23 against Baltimore in 2019. The Astros wound up with 25 hits as Bregman, Kyle Tucker and Christian Vazquez tied career highs with four each. McCormick, who had five RBIs, and Trey Mancini homered the AL West leaders. White Sox second baseman Josh Harrison pitched the ninth inning and allowed four runs and six hits in his third mound appearance of the season. The Astros won for the sixth time in their last eight games. Cubs 3, Orioles 2 – Contreras hits 2 homers, Cubs outlast contending O’s 3-2 Willson Contreras hit a pair of homers, Adrian Sampson pitched scoreless ball into the sixth inning and the Chicago Cubs beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-2. Contreras had his 10th multi-homer game, which ranks second among Cubs catchers behind Gabby Hartnett who had 14. Sampson allowed four hits with six strikeouts and two walks over 5 2/3 innings, earning his first win since last Sept. 14 at Philadelphia. Rafael Ortega also homered for the Cubs, who have won five of seven. Brandon Hughes picked up his first career save by getting a double play on a soft liner by Cedric Mullins in the ninth. He was injured going down the same slide Milwaukee mascot Bernie Brewer uses to celebrate home runs by the home team. Vassegh says he went down the slide twice Wednesday. The first time, he was filmed at the top of the slide, and everything went fine. The second time, he was filmed at the bottom, and that’s when his right arm crashed into the padding. NFL – National Football League – Preseason Week 2 Last Night Chicago Bears 27, Seattle Seahawks 11 Bears 27, Seahawks 11 – Smith, error-prone Seahawks struggle in 27-11 loss to Bears Geno Smith did little to distinguish himself in his battle with Drew Lock for Seattle’s starting quarterback job as the sloppy Seahawks fell 27-11 to the Chicago Bears in the second preseason game for both teams. The Seahawks had planned to start Lock but turned to Smith when Lock tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday. That meant another opportunity for Smith, but his uninspired performance suggests Lock still has a chance to win the job. Smith finished 10 of 18 for 112 yards and was hampered by teammates’ mistakes while playing the first half. Second-year Bears quarterback Justin Fields made a brief appearance and led a field-goal drive. Saturday Detroit Lions at Indianapolis Colts, 1:00 p.m. NFL – Browns’ Deshaun Watson suspended 11 games, fined $5 million Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson will serve an 11-game unpaid suspension, pay a $5 million fine and undergo required professional evaluation and counseling following accusations of sexual misconduct by two dozen women. Watson was accused of sexually harassing and coercing women during massage therapy sessions while he played for the Houston Texans. The league had sought to ban him for at least one year for violating its personal conduct policy. Watson’s suspension begins Aug. 30, when he won’t be allowed at the team’s facility. He may return for the Browns’ game on Dec. 4 in Houston. Cleveland traded for the three-time Pro Bowler in March, signing him to a fully guaranteed $230 million contract WNBA – WNBA Playoffs – Round 1 (Best of three) Saturday New York Liberty at Chicago Sky, 12:00 p.m.                               (NYL leads 1-0) NHL – Nazem Kadri signs 7-year, $49M deal with Calgary Flames Gritty forward Nazem Kadri has signed a seven-year, $49 million contract with the Calgary Flames. He leaves the Colorado Avalanche after helping them win the Stanley Cup last season. He had a career year with 87 points in 71 regular-season games and kept that going into the playoffs with seven goals and eight assists sandwiched around a broken thumb. Kadri was considered the second-best NHL free agent available after winger Johnny Gaudreau, who left for Columbus. NCAA – Big Ten – B1G deal: Big Ten lands $7 billion, NFL-style TV contracts The Big Ten has announced its new, seven-year media rights deal with Fox, NBC and CBS that is believed to be the richest ever struck with a college sports conference. A person familiar with the contracts tells The Associated Press that the conference’s soon-to-be 16 member universities eventually will share more than $1 billion in revenue per year. Starting in 2024, when USC and UCLA join the conference, Big Ten football Saturdays will be structured similar to the NFL. That means three marquee games being carried in consecutive time slots on three different major TV networks. NCAAFB – 2022 NCAA rules changes address targeting, faking injuries College football players penalized for targeting now can have part of their punishment appealed under new NCAA rules. Players flagged for making an above-the-shoulder hit in the second half of a game must sit out the first half of the following game. This season the national coordinator of officials can take a second look at the call. If the call is determined to be made in error, the player will be allowed to play in the first half the next game. There also are new rules pertaining to players faking injuries to stop the clock and blocking below the waist. NCAA – NCAA asks members for help with NIL violation investigations NCAA officials have sent a letter to members updating them on enforcement’s staff pursuit of “potential violations” of the name, image and likeness compensation policy. The association emphasized the need for schools to aid investigations. The email says NCAA enforcement staff is “actively investigating potential abuses of NIL transactions and we’ll allege any substantiated concerns as soon as possible.” The NCAA in 2020 lifted its ban on athletes earning money for things like endorsement and sponsorship deals, social media posts and personal appearances. Golf – PGA/LIV – Judge sets January 2024 trial for LIV Golf suit against tour Players from Saudi-funded LIV Golf who have filed an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour will be waiting nearly 16 months for the case to go to trial. U.S. District Judge Beth Labson Freeman has set the trial for Jan. 8, 2024. Depending on whether LIV attorneys proceed with a preliminary injunction that means PGA Tour players who have been suspended for signing with the rival league could go through another year of not being allowed at tour events. The champions will earn less than the $3.9 million in 2019, the last year before the coronavirus pandemic, but players losing in the first or second round will earn around $20,000 more. The union announced its decision about eight hours before Monday’s midnight EDT deadline for an agreement that was set in the March 10 lockout settlement. MLB – Senators give Manfred until Friday to respond on minors A group of U.S. senators has given baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred until Friday to respond to questions about the sport’s antitrust exemption and minor leaguers. The senators had made the request to Manfred on July 18, and MLB asked for the additional time. Richard Durbin and Charles Grassley are among the four senators who asked Manfred a series of questions that could be a prelude to proposed legislation further limiting an exemption created by a 1922 Supreme Court decision. NFL – NFL enters media streaming marketplace with ‘NFL+’ service The NFL is making its move into offering its own media streaming platform. The league announced that “NFL+” launched on Monday. Owners were briefed about it during the league meetings in May while Brian Rolapp, the NFL’s chief media and business officer, confirmed in a column for “Sports Illustrated” last week that it would be starting this season. Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a phone interview with The AP that the direct-to-consumer offering gives the league the ability to understand what fans and non-fans are seeking in terms of content and customize it for them. NFL – Chicago mayor presents 3 options for improving Soldier Field Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has presented three options for renovating Soldier Field, the home of the Chicago Bears, but the team said it’s not interested. Lightfoot on Monday proposed fully enclosing the stadium by rebuilding both end zones with columns that can support a dome; rebuilding both end zones with columns to make the stadium dome-ready; or modifying Soldier Field to be a multi-purpose stadium better suited for soccer. The mayor’s office estimated the costs of the three options would range from $900 million to $2.2 billion. It didn’t say how it would pay for any of the options. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Las Vegas Aces at Chicago Sky, 8:30 p.m. NHL – Detroit Red Wings extend affiliation deal with Grand Rapids The 20 year partnership between the Detroit Red Wings and the Grand Rapids Griffins will continue for another five years.  Detroit has extended their affiliation deal with Grand Rapids until at-least the 2026-27 season.   Grand Rapids has been the Red Wings primary affiliate since the 2002-03 season.  the Red Wings say that the close proximity of their minor league team in Grand Rapids as the most convenient NHL/AHL partnerships as Van Andel Arena and Little Caesars Arena are only 157 miles apart.  Detroit’s secondary affiliate is located in Toledo, Ohio.   The Red Wings affiliation has resulted in two Calder Cup Championships for the Griffins in 2013 and 2017.  The Red Wings oversee hockey operations in Grand Rapids, including providing the GM, coaching staff, players, equipment state, and athletic trainers. NBA – Sudden arena idea angers, unnerves Philadelphia’s Chinatown Organizers and members of Philadelphia’s Chinatown say they were surprised by the 76ers’ announcement that they hope to build a $1.3 billion arena just a block from the community’s gateway arch. They say no one reached out for community input before the announcement. Now, they fear that they’ll be merely a stepping stone for people visiting the arena and that real estate values will price out older and immigrant residents. Chinatowns throughout the U.S. have been under threat from gentrification or development over the years. A spokesperson for the arena development company says that the process is in its infancy and that they planned to work with the community. NASCAR – JGR accepts penalties given to Hamlin, Busch, apologizes Joe Gibbs Racing has declined to appeal the penalties levied by NASCAR that stripped Denny Hamlin of his Pocono Raceway victory and cost Kyle Busch his runner-up finish. The win was awarded to Chase Elliott. Hamlin’s No. 11 Toyota and Busch’s No. 18 Toyota both flunked postrace inspection Sunday night when NASCAR found issues in both cars that affected the aerodynamics. Joe Gibbs Racing apologized in a statement and said changes were underway to make sure it did not happen again. Hamlin was stripped of his third Cup Series win of the season and a track-record seventh at Pocono. Soccer – US women’s team has new vibe, work to do before World Cup The U.S. women’s national soccer team has a new look with young talent, and coach Vlatko Andonovski has tweaked its traditional straightforward and speedy attack to take a more nuanced approach. The players say something more is going on as well. They say there’s been a shift in the team’s vibe due in large part to a new mix of veterans and younger players. Andonovski set about remaking the team after a disappointing Olympic tournament in Tokyo where the U.S. came away with a bronze. They’re now looking to build toward the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympics. Soccer – Hope Solo pleads guilty to DWI, gets 30-day sentence, fine Former U.S. women’s national team star goalkeeper Hope Solo pleaded guilty Monday to driving while impaired, almost four months after she was found passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle in North Carolina with her 2-year-old twins inside. Solo also was charged with misdemeanor child abuse and resisting a public officer in connection with the March 31 incident. The Winston-Salem Journal reports that her attorney said the remaining two charges were voluntarily dismissed. A judge gave Solo a suspended sentence of 24 months and an active sentence of 30 days.
