The annual Montreal black metal festival Messe De Morte is in the books. We never made it out to La Belle Province ourselves, but it's a yearly trek for our good bud and sister show Wrestling Night in Canada co-host "Ducky" Dustin Maruca.   So this week we sat Mr. Maruca in the hotseat to the get the 411 on the fest. We go over the line up, the highs and lows and and the presence of Antifa (!). We're already eagerly awaiting next year.   In our "News, Views and Tunes", we get reintroduced to the Partridge Family (!!) and pay tribute to a Canadian Punk legend. Musically, we crank Messe headliners Marduk and Ancient. Plus some Personality Crisis, Faithful Breath, Demon Bitch, Void, The Headless Ghost and introduce Canuck bashers CHUZO in our "Indie Spotlight".   Horns Up!

We've all heard the stories about where punk came from…the New York Dolls and a few other bands start playing in a crappy area of New York that attracted musicians, artists, and degenerates with low rent… This leads to the opening of CBGB, a club that becomes the centre of a music scene that gave a home to bands like television, Blondie, The Talking Heads, The Heartbreakers, and, most importantly, The Ramones… In July 1976, The Ramones fly to London and play a show attended by curious kids who then either continue on with their punk plans—that would be The Sex Pistols, The Clash, and a few others—or inspire others to form their own groups…and from there, punk spreads across the world… That's a nice succinct look at punk's origin story…what's missing is Canada's involvement—and believe me, the great white north had a lot to say about punk in those early days…and I mean, a lot… Toronto was like the third leg of a punk triangle that extended to New York and London…ideas and trends and music was constantly exchanged…meanwhile, out on the west coast, there was a fierce Vancouver scene that worked mostly along north-south routes into the U.S. And then across the country, there were pockets of punk that had their own influence… This history needs to be told…and we're going to do it by looking at the stories of 14 incredibly important Canadian punk bands from back in the day… See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Quebec City, Canada's Our Darkest Days have just announced a new album “Snakes & Ladders” and are debuting a new single titled “These Fast Times" (ft. Steve Rawles of Belvedere). The album will be released digitally and on CD on November 19th via Thousand Islands Records (North America) and Lockjaw Records (UK/Europe). Vinyl will ship first half of 2022. Stream "These Fast Times" and Pre-Order The LP Here: https://ourdarkestdays.lnk.to/thesefasttimes The ferocious follow up to 2016's 'A Common Agony' features lightning fast skatepunk tuneage and is the band's most technical and refined music to date. Includes guest artists Steve Rawles (Belvedere), Étienne Dionne (Mute), Geir Pedersen (Adhesive) and Valérie Morin. Of the new single, "These Fast Times," the band says, "We live in a lifetime where our lives are laid out on a strict timeline. The hourglass empties itself at a fast pace but we are so blinded by evolution, that we hardly see the end of its race. As we grew up younger, it seemed like we weren't so rushed to live our lives ; possibly the main source of that was the lack of technology and progress as we see it today. Maybe it's time to go back to our old habits and live more instead of consuming more. We may have evolved as per say, but in another way it seems like we're getting further away from how our human lives were intended to thrive." Randy Frobel is an incredibly nice, incredibly busy guy. As well being the frontman of Canadian pop punk heroes We Were Sharks, he plays amateur league baseball, performs in a popular covers band AND finds time to write solo songs and play video games. We hate him for all of this.Luckily for us, Randy also has time to be part of our offbeat podcast. Things go off on a massive tangent very quickly this time as we look at the differences between cricket and baseball (spoiler alert - cricket is boring), discuss Steve-O's voice, ponder whether Disney Plus kickstarted the pandemic and put Randy through a quiz about sharks. We still can't believe how many teeth they grow in their lifetime. You probably won't either. Before Randy walks into this nonsense, we kick things off with 'top bants' about sore legs, haunted houses and fun trips to the dentist. The human dentist, not the shark dentist. A dentist that is human, not a shark, and helps humans, not sharks. You know what we mean.

They are heroes of fast, furious, melodic punk, who've never lost sight of their roots. 2020 marked the 25th year of the band's history, but since all of their tours were moved to 2021; the band felt the need to write and record their 6th full-length instalment, Hindsight Is The Sixth Sense. The album features a furious mix of old and new. The new direction in song writing is attributed to new members Dan Wollach on guitar and Ryan Mumby on bass. The all-familiar speed, the riffs, the insightful lyrics and singalong harmonies are all still there thanks to drummer, Casey Lewis and lead singer & founder, Steve Rawles. Formed in 1995 and originally never even meant to play a live show, the trailblazing band from Calgary, Alberta quickly grew a reputation on the underground punk scene for their blazing fast speed and melodic vocals. Helming proudly from small town Cambridge, Ontario Canada, Block Parent is a three-piece unit focused on playing coming of age, self-deprecating punk rock. By making waves in both the thriving underground punk scene throughout the 519 and greater punk community of Ontario, they have played alongside The Dirty Nil, Fucked Up, '68, Single Mothers and more. Following their first vinyl release from Thousand Island Records and Pink Lemonade Records, Block Parent constructed a debut LP that perfectly captures their relentless energy and heartfelt comedy. Their new self-released album ‘Sick Year, Bro!' cements Block Parent's punk rock identity into a tight 30-minute package. Listen to the album: https://blockparent.bandcamp.com/album/sick-year-bro The band says, "Growing up is a painful and beautiful experience. It mutates and morphs ya into the chud loving critter you never thought you'd see reflecting back at ya in a pool of your own vomit. We hold onto the pains of nostalgia with our beer-soaked fists while we anxiously hide our disdain and discomfort for a scary and confusing world....but we have each other. We'll grow old together and we'll absolutely get weirder. In the end, all we can do is embrace our flaws, accept our self-destruction, face our anxieties and hold on to what we love....past present and future. Here's to you Cambridge, you beautiful and disgusting wretched hive of friendship and isolation. It's not much....but it's ours." Hello and welcome to episode 29 of Sing! Dance! Act! Thrive!I am so excited for today’s guest, Canada’s Punk Rock Queen Bif Naked! I have been a fan of hers since her 1996 self-titled debut album and her follow up I Bificus with the hits “Daddy’s Getting Married,” “Spaceman” and “Moment of Weakness.” In 2001 her album Purge produced by Desmond Child had even more hits including “I Love Myself Today,” “Chokin on the Truth” and one of my favourites “Tango Shoes.” The albums and tours continued and in 2011 she released BIF NAKED FOREVER: Acoustic Hits and Other Delights and in 2016she released her autobiography I Bificus. In the book, she shares her journey from being born in secret to a teenager living in India, the product of a Canadian girl and a British boy. She was rejected by both families, hidden away in a mental hospital and adopted by missionaries and then moved to North America. She began what she recalls with ironic humour as a “charmed life.” Targeted by girl gangs and facing other abusive situations, she escaped this early life by joining a punk rock band and leaving on tour, where she married the drummer and hit a downward spiral that found her on the floor of a Vancouver drug den.Through it all, her creative personality and unstoppable humour were her weapons of self-defence. Bif showcased her life’s journey in tattoo ink across her body and, with her unique ability to transform her true life stories into song lyrics, she found her voice as a solo artist, started her own record company and at twenty-three years of age became an international recording artist.Throughout her remarkable career, armed with her singular talent and instantly identifiable look, Bif would captivate the imagination of audiences and media alike, releasing nine albums and twenty-one videos. She embarked on seemingly endless international tours, several feature films and multiple television roles, only to be struck down with breast cancer at the age of 37. Bif would discover her passion for advocacy, as a triumphant survivor and someone who helps others first. When I started this podcast she was on my wish list of people I wanted on so when I got the opportunity I jumped at it. She now lives in Toronto so her publicist Eric Alper asked if I wanted to go to her house for the interview. Um, yes, yes I would like that very much. Lol. I love her.So of course she was fabulous and we are best friends now so I know that you will enjoy our lovely conversation. For links and transcript visit http://singdanceactthrive.com/029

Newsies proved that cinema screenings are the way forward for Broadway, but while we're on the subject of theater, Mitch and Brittany are still arguing about the Gilmore revival - in this case, specifically whether the 16 minute Stars Hollow: The Musical scene was a work of genius or a waste of space. Bringing it down a notch: Natalie is a house wanker, Brit has lost her fandom FOMO, and Caitlin recounts her experience within the nonsensical American healthcare system. However, our love remains pure for many things: Brittany continues to champion The Americans, Mitch wants you to go taste test the cultures of the world at Epcot, and Caitlin gives us her latest audiobook recommendation - The Bear and the Nightingale. Also, we're all old, boring and obsessed with lifestyle programming. #ANA - Ask NATW Anything: "Favorite friendship (any media)?" This is not a test! We have "jammed the transmission" and taken over the Decibel Geek Podcast. Consider this the Hostile Hoser Hijack as this week your favorite podcast has been taken hostage by CANADIANS! Consider this episode as a sequel to the previous Radio Sucks - Canadian Edition show but this time broadcast from the pirate studio in the Great White North. Chris and Aaron get to take the week off whether they expected to or not! Your hijacker hosts, Wally Norton and Rich Dillon dig through some of their Canadian Cd's in hope of turning on the Decibel Geek Army to some new sounds from north of the border. Things get rolling with Automan.ca a new Canadian band featuring a familiar name. Front man Darrell "Dwarf" Millar (Killer Dwarfs) has stepped out from behind the drums and exercises his vocals with "Back in the Sun" Wally dedicates his first pick to Aaron Camaro who mentioned Slik Toxic on the last Canadian episode. From the "Doin the Nasty" album comes "Cheap Nicotine". Slik Toxic's vocalist can be now heard fronting his new band Famous Underground with a new album just released not long ago. Slash Puppet is up next, with "When the Whip Comes Down" probably one of the greatest Canadian bands to never get signed back in the day. Up here though, they burned bright with some great tunes and kick ass live  shows. Up next, something almost unheard of on the Decibel Geek show is a ballad. In what Wally describes as the greatest rock ballad ever written, we have Gypsy Rose and "Don't Turn Your Back On Me Now" from the Gene Simmons produced Prey album. "One Way Ticket" is a tune from a great young band out of the Hamilton area, 40 Sons. This tune proves that there is hope for the future as these kids are writing some really melodic, kick ass rock tunes. Fraze Gang, featuring Greg Fraser and Stevie Skreebs of Brighton Rock have just released Fraze Gang 2 and "Saint or Sinner" the lead off track is Wally's pick to kick things into overdrive. With a real Judas Priest feel, the guitar work on this track is truly smoking! Some Decibel Geeks might know of the television police drama Flashpoint. What you may not know is that Hugh Dillon who plays Officer Ed Lane on the show is also the front man for Canadian Punk rockers The Headstones. Rich spins the high octane "Reno" off the Smile and Wave CD. The Decibel Geeks have already been introduced to Carl Dixon and Coney Hatch. This time we turn to Coney's bass player Andy Curran and his solo band Soho 69 with the track "Scatterbrain". Next up Rich chooses the song "Pine Valley" from the obscure Canadian band Mushroom Trail. A bluesy little rocker from a band so obscure that he even stumped his co-host. Closing out this Canadian metal feast, after all the back-bacon and beer. We have a real treat, West Memphis Suicide rocking out a crunchy version of Kiss's "War Machine". This track can be found on the new Kissin' Time - Canada's Tribute to Kiss CD. This Cd was just released on Halloween 2012 with all proceeds going to Sick Kids Hospital here in Toronto.
