Today I have the honor of welcoming back Sarah Stewart Holland and Beth Silvers. Sarah and Beth are authors, speakers, and the hosts of the podcast “Pantsuit Politics.” You'll get to hear from Sarah and Beth about the origins of the podcast, how it began back in 2015 as a bipartisan conversation about politics, and the nuances that could be found in these discussions. As you can imagine, after the election in 2016, life and conversations around politics began to change drastically, and the way we talk about issues, and how we encounter people who disagree with us has just gotten messier. Sarah and Beth's first book, I Think You're Wrong But I'm Listening, a guide to grace-filled political conversations was exactly what it sounds like. It still is a truly incredible resource for how to engage in political conversations, particularly for people who just don't know where to begin navigating them when the climate in the US is so polarized. Their most recent book, however, titled Now What: How to Move Forward When We're Divided About Practically Everything is less about politics and more about relationships. As Beth says “we are not even talking about politics anymore in the things that divide us. We are talking about personality and generational differences and the relationships that exist in the world, not just the issue itself, it's all the things that inform a person's feelings, experience and it's a response to issues.” We talk today about what got us here, where we see the heart of God in this journey, and how to just unearth our humanity with honesty, compassion, and nuance. Beth reminded us that everyone has a story inside of them that they need to connect with someone about because they are still trying to make sense of and work through their version of what we have all been through over these last few years. Wherever you are on that journey, friend, I hope you know that you matter. And your story matters. PS: If you are interested, the Pantsuit Politics community is currently walking through their new book online, if you'd like to dive into that, and as the news of late continues to be heartbreaking and charged, they attempt to have conversations on the podcast week after week, they have amazing offerings for their patrons on Patreon, live events coming up, and so much more. Podcast #549 earns its moniker with tunes from The Hold Steady, Sam Coffey & the Iron Lungs, Death By Unga Bunga, Mogwai, Pale Blue Eyes, Mensa Deathsquad, & Phoebe Bridgers.
The Toronto-based powerhouse, Sam Coffey and the Iron Lungs have been tearing up stages across North America with the likes of Fidlar, The Dirty Nil, Frank Turner and Billy Joe Armstrong's The Longshot, to name a few. “Real One” is the band's third full length album, and while the first two were already great, this is simply better – the band have all matured as musicians, the sound is fuller, richer and they managed to capture that live energy you get from them at any of their shows. Sam and I talk about all kinds of stuff including band's DnD sessions, which you can catch every Wednesday at 7pm EST on twitch (their handle is @coffeyandlungs). We also talk about the new record, and how they managed to achieve the sound they did and finally because he's from Toronto, we chat about some of his favourite spots in the city. Do you enjoy folk stories? Ben and Pat sure do. On this episode of 4-Thirty, the guys take a 'Late-Night Deep-Dive' into the single biggest source of cultural influence in the history of humanity: Folklore. In this discussion, the guys will each bring a handful of legends to the table, while also highlighting some of the weird news stories that only Ben and Pat can find. Did Johnny Appleseed really exist? What famous fairy tale hero did Richard Ramirez inadvertently murder? If you had to replace your hand with a foreign device, what would you choose? Check out this week's episode to learn about all this, and much, much more!

Sammy Feilchenfeld joins Dakota to talk about the biggest news stories of 2017. This isn’t the usual top movie of the year podcast, but instead reflecting on the year that was and what to expect for 2018. For an amazing Best Of list check out Rachel Gordon’s Top 25 Films of 2017, Live in Limbo’s official Best Of list. – Best Picture Winner mixup back in Feb causing LaLaLand to think it won when Moonlight actually did. – Horror movies absolutely raking in the dough with IT, Get Out, Split and Annabelle: Creation all earning more than $100 million. – Systematic abuse is finally being taken serious with the likes of Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Brett Ratner, Louis CK and others being taken to task for the suffering they put people through. – Star Wars having all types of Director issues, from Colin Trevarrow being kicked off of Ep 9 (and replaced by JJ Abrams), Phil Lord and Christopher Miller being fired before reshoots of Solo (and replaced by Ron Howard) and on the heels of Gareth Edwards having Tony Gilroy oversee Rogue One reshoots and the franchise has had either the number 1 or 2 highest grossing movie of the last 3 years. – Disney buying 21st Century Fox and what that mean’s that now about 40% of all entertainment will be produced by one studio. For examples of all of our stories in one easy source check out Collider or Empire Online. The guys also ran down the highest grossing films of the last year. Star Wars: The Last Jedi Beauty and the Beast Wonder Woman Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Spider-Man: Homecoming IT Thor: Ragnarok Despicable Me 3 Logan The Fate of the Furious Music from this episode is Sun Slug and Sleepwalker by psych rockers Possum. Click here to learn more. Advertisement By Andrea Gin Editor’s note: lyrics contain profanity. When Toronto power-pop band Sam Coffey & the Iron Lungs started working on their second album, they decided it was time to finally go in and record in a proper studio. Prior to this, the six-piece had been taking a mostly DIY approach to its recordings, which included a stream of singles and the 2014 LP Gates of Hell. For this new self-titled release, the band not only found a studio, but also hired producer Alex Bonenfant (Metz, Crystal Castles) and signed to Dine Alone Records for its release. "Recording in a real studio for the first time with an excellent producer like Alex is a very big part of why this album is any good at all,” Sam Coffey wrote via email. “Some of the songs have been around for a long time, and we recorded this album three different times before we went into the studio with Alex at Dreamhouse. We took our time to get it right." The effort paid off. The songs on this self-titled release are not only well-crafted, but infused with an old-school party-rock spirit that is hard to resist. It’s an effort that certainly makes one thing clear: this is a band that loves its '70s power pop. - CBC Music

Alison Hitchcock thinks so: when she discovered her friend Brian Greenley had cancer, she decided to write him regular letters throughout his treatment - initially as an attempt to cheer him up, then as companionship through some of his darkest hours. In this interview with Olly, she recalls how writing over a hundred letters to Brian helped get them both through a difficult chapter, and deepened their friendship immeasurably. A thick layer of World War II dust.
A thick layer of World War II dust.
As storms raged through Oklahoma in 2013, Martha Lillard waited them out from inside her iron lung. She is one of just dozens of polio survivors who still rely on their decades-old machines. The Last of the Iron Lungs is a portrait of Martha, who contracted polio in 1953. To Martha, the 1940s iron lung is comfort and survival. As a researcher explains in the story, newer machines operate differently, forcing air into the lungs in a way that doesn’t feel right for iron lung patients. Producer Julia Scott sent us some thoughts about her experience reporting this story: “Martha’s story is fascinating enough on its own. It’s a radio producer’s dream to be able to capture the kinds of sounds no one will ever hear again – the mechanical bellows, pushing air through a machine older than Martha herself. “Reporting this story made me realize how distant and abstracted polio has become in our national memory. Martha’s bedroom is dominated by her iron lung, a relic of history that most people my age may never even have heard of (I’m 32). To her, it’s a trusted companion and a lifelong friend. But the iron lung symbolized one of the most terrifying, unpredictable health epidemics of the 20th century. Archival photos like this one brought home the sheer scale of the outbreak – and the prospect of lifelong paralysis that thousands of people endured. “One of the highlights of this project was being able to try out Martha’s iron lung – something I was a little scared to do. I laid down on the sliding cot, pushed my head through her foam neck collar and she sealed me in. It wasn’t claustrophobic, but I wasn’t counting on how hard it would be stop drawing breath and let the respirator take over pushing my diaphragm in and out, forcing air to whoosh into my throat. ‘Stop trying to breathe!’ Martha instructed. For her, lying in the iron lung is the most comfortable sensation in the world. “Since the story has aired I’ve received emails from people whose families were touched by polio, grandfathers and great-aunts who spent time in an iron lung but graduated to breathing on their own. They see Martha’s story as part of the same continuum.” This episode was reported and produced by Julia Scott. It was hosted for this episode of Transistor by Genevieve Sponsler and mixed for Transistor by Erika Lantz. Image of Martha Lillard © Julia Scott.
Julia Scott says "participant observation" is a valuable reporting tool, even if it means climbing into an "iron lung" which looks like something only Dracula would lay in.
