Charlynda is a serial entrepreneur: She serves as founder and CEO of Mutt's Sauce LLC and OH Taste LLC; Executive Director of the OH Taste Foundation. She's the author of Rock Bottom Has a Trampoline, a sought-after speaker and coach for women's empowerment and small businesses, a TEDx speaker, a Veteran (11 years in the Air Force). We loved hearing her story about growing up on a special, multi-use sauce that her grandfather Mutt made from his own secret recipe - and how he left the recipe to her when he passed away. This badass was talked so calmly about her Shark Tank experience and mentorship session with Daymond John. We talked about her family, Mutt Sauce, challenges, successes, 6888 Kitchen at the Arcade, and more. https://www.muttssauce.com/ https://www.charlyndajean.com/ https://www.charlyndajean.com/rockbottombook
I'm so happy to bring you my talk with Charlynda Scales, author of the brand new book, Rock Bottom Has a Trampoline, which has already ranked as a best new release in its category! She's a veteran, now a reservist, a former military spouse, and an entrepreneur. Charlynda is not only impressive, but she's a kind-hearted person who is wise beyond her years. But that wisdom has been hard-won. We discuss the stories behind her book, her journey to becoming an entrepreneur, aligning yourself with others who are like-hearted vs. like-minded, advice for entrepreneurs or anyone starting over, and how to come back when life has brought you to rock bottom. As Charlynda says about the idea of "rock bottom has a trampoline," "I've heard the saying, 'rock bottom has a basement.' How freaking depressing is that statement? There's no faith in that. There's no light at the end of the tunnel in that quote. If you believe in something bigger than yourself, you'll never truly be at rock bottom. Rock bottom is not a place you go and stay. Rock bottom is a moment." Here's more about Charlynda: Charlynda Scales is a serial entrepreneur: She serves as founder and CEO of Mutt's Sauce LLC and OH Taste LLC; Director of the OH Taste Foundation (501c3), and creator of The Empower Collection. She is the author of the business empowerment book, Rock Bottom Has a Trampoline. Charlynda is a sought-after speaker and mentor for women's empowerment and small businesses. Her military career spans over 15 years; she's currently an Air Force Reservist stationed at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. Her son, David, is, in her opinion, her finest achievement. I'm certain you're going to be so inspired by Charlynda, just as I was. My grandfather, Charlie "Mutt" Ferrell, Jr. created an all-purpose specialty sauce in 1956. In 2013, I learned that I inherited the coveted recipe. He didn't leave me any instructions, but I'm humbled by his trust and belief in me. I used my business background to create Mutt's Sauce, LLC, and we now distribute three flavors of Mutt's Sauce across the U.S. www.muttssauce.comFollow Mutt's Saucewww.muttssauce.comwww.Facebook.com/muttssaucewww.instagram.com/muttssaucewww.Twitter.com/muttssauceLearn about Mutt's Saucehttps://usveteransmagazine.com/2018/06/daymond-johns-advice-founder-mutts-sauce-veteran-entrepreneurs/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Msc6YKPX04&t=23shttps://www.cnbc.com/2019/11/11/vet-turns-family-recipe-into-80000-venture-that-launched-on-amazon.htmlhttps://www.daytondailynews.com/lifestyles/beavercreek-veteran-develops-sauce-business-as-tribute-to-grandfather/T4FWSU3FRZBQRLSBA53T2PJXMA/https://www.forbes.com/sites/alissafitzgerald/2020/11/11/mutts-sauce-honors-two-generations-of-service-by-american-veterans/?sh=45d9234d39d5https://news.yahoo.com/charlynda-scales-grandfathers-secret-sauce-150032321.htmlhttps://www.dayton.com/news/local/local-distillery-teams-with-specialty-sauce-maker-raise-money-for-tornado-relief/tUdQaTWoNAOJufAhq8NY8J/https://www.forbes.com/sites/tanyaklich/2018/05/28/start-small-dont-take-leaps-daymond-johns-advice-to-the-founder-of-mutts-sauce-and-other-veteran-entrepreneurs/?sh=9d9a4dd28e1ehttps://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/bunker-labs-shares-list-of-women-owned-businesses-to-support-this-womens-history-month-301240752.htmlhttps://sports.yahoo.com/veteran-owned-brand-mutt-sauce-110000462.htmlhttps://blogs.va.gov/VAntage/71694/borne-battle-182-vetpreneur-charlynda-scales/https://www.bizjournals.com/dayton/news/2020/10/15/charlynda-scales-talks-business-updates.htmlhttps://www.wearethemighty.com/mighty-culture/charlynda-scales-veteran-success/https://www.bizjournals.com/dayton/news/2019/11/20/business-of-the-year-spotlight-mutts-sauce-woman.htmlSupport the show (https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=UJB9KCJPFUXMG)
After graduating she went into the service. She thought she would be working with planes with the Air Force. But she actually was sent to an office building where regular civilians worked. She realized that her job was to work more closely with corporate workers. She never worked on theflight line. Even though she never worked in the place that she thought, she became very familiar with the planes, weapons and all their parts. She learned there is a business side to the military. In 2015 Charlynda started thinking about her grandfather's Muttssauce. She asked her mother and she said her grandfather had left an envelope. She found the original recipe for his sauce. She was confused on why he choose her and what to do with it. She looked into finding a mentor and he told her that she should take the recipe and make a food product. She wasn't what to do, but she made the decision to do it. She pushed herself and it took her about 5 months to get the first product. This is where the Muttssauce was born. Thanks for listening! Thanks so much for listening to our podcast! In today's episode, I interview Air Force Veteran, Entrepreneur, and Bunker Labs OG, Charlynda Scales, CEO of Mutt Sauce, an all-purpose specialty sauce company founded in memory of her late Grandfather, Charley "Mutt" Ferrel Jr., who made the coveted recipe found in Mutt Sauce's product today. After inheriting the recipe in 2013, Charlynda decided to use her military service and business background to launch the business and distribute the sauce all across the United States. Despite the numerous accolades and awards, she's received, including a 25k Grant From Bob Evans and Damond John, Charlynda opens up about her struggles with imposter syndrome, the challenges of running a small business, and want often feels like a never-ending grind. Although Charlynda and I have crossed paths multiple over the years, we never had an opportunity to have a conversation like on today's show. My hope is that Charlynda's transparency and vulnerability, empower you to overcome your own challenges, as you continue your entrepreneurial journey.

Ms. Charlynda Scales speaks of her time as an acquisitions officer in the United States Air Force, the bond she shared with her grandfather Charlie “Mutt” Ferrell, Jr., who encouraged Charlynda to pursue a career in the military and left her with his recipe. Today, Charlynda leads Mutt’s Sauce, with “every bottle of Mutt’s Sauce made with love and determination to continue his legacy.” Hear about the difficulty and excitement of being the first active-duty service member to appear on Shark Tank and how Charlynda has managed business success as someone from modest beginnings. “In 1956, Mutt got the idea to make a sauce he could use for every meal. Mutt’s sauce was a multi-purpose specialty sauce, infusing sweet, tangy and a little bit of heat into each spoonful. When Mutt deployed with the U.S. Air Force in support of Vietnam and the Korean War, he packed up his wife, kids and of course the sauce, and headed over to Japan. While in Japan, Mutt would host parties and his sauce was always the highlight. The laughter, food, and friendship was always successful at breaking down any cultural or language barriers. What started as one man’s quest to make a multi-purpose sauce quickly became a symbol of unity and brotherhood wherever he went.” (Muttssauce.com/pages/about).Story of Mutt's SauceLearn about and purchase Mutt’s SauceLearn about and book CharlyndaPowershift: Transform Any Situation, Close Any Deal, and Achieve Any Outcome by Daniel Paisner and Daymond John Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation Hosts: Tyler Buchholz and Colin KirkEditor: Tyler BuchholzSpecial thank you to Jack MetcalfeSupport the show (https://customcoinholders.com/product/walk-of-heroes/)

Charlynda shares her journey to joining the military and her experience as a female service member.Growing up, service was a part of Charlynda’s family culture. Every generation had at least one person who served. After her cousin who served in the United States Marine Corps got hurt, the baton passed to Charlynda. Much to her surprise, she received a full scholarship to the college of her choice - on the Air Force’s dime.Starting ROTCCharlynda was a freshman at Clemson on September 11, 2001. She tells us how that terrible event shaped her time in ROTC, and ultimately, her time in the military. She walks us through her role as a service member and shares some encouragement for anyone who feels like their job isn’t very important. Sometimes you feel like the work you are doing isn't important because it isn't the out in the front or even overseas fighting the fight. But every job in the Air Force is important for the mission and the mission can't happen without everyone doing their part.Mutt SauceWe also hear how Charlynda started her company (Mutt’s Sauce, which is so good!) and what motivated her to make the transition from active duty to reserves. She keeps it real for us and talks about how it was hard to hang up her uniform (if only temporarily). And she also fills us in on some of the challenges that come with life as a Reservist. Charlynda is an air force veteran turned entrepreneur. While working in the air force, Charlynda stumbled upon her grandfather's beloved and secret, BBQ sauce recipe. Charlynda was faced with a tough decision, she could buy the car that she had been saving for, or she could use that money to launch her business. She chose the latter. Charlynda then turned towards the small business community of Dayton Ohio in search of guidance and mentorship. They recommended a co-packer to produce and bottle her sauces. She then partnered with Garden Harvest who produced the original 700 bottles of Mutt's Original sauce After selling the first 700 bottles to family and friends. Her mentors advised her to re-invest her profits back into producing more sauce. From there she began to scale her business And in 2013 Mutts Sauces won Bob Evans Farm's annual Hero's to CEO's contest. Where Charlynda had the opportunity to meet world renowned businessman and investor Daymond John. Since then Charlynda has continued to grow Mutt's Sauces which is now in stores across the nation and is available for purchase on Amazon.
This week Borne the Battle's guest started with a recipe handed down from her grandfather, a $25,000 investment, and turned it into a successful business that launched on Amazon this past November.
