This month we have 2020 MBA alumnus Anthony Wojtal, Budget Manager at Chicago Public Schools (CPS). Anthony leads the budget team for the country's third largest school district and after 12 years has a veteran's perspective to offer. CPS delivers a public good and, as such, must serve everyone in its district equally, without exclusion. For this reason, it's a fool's errand to compare them to private firms that make such choices to maximize profit. So, how does CPS focus its organization when they cannot choose the services they offer, or customers they serve? The answer, an endless pursuit of operational efficiency with the guidance of a strong mission. Listen in to hear how, year after year, CPS delivers more with less using the most common approach there is, efficiency.

Today our guests are Angela Shanahan & Karen Devine, School Counselors in Chicago Public Schools. We talk about the impact that comprehensive, data-informed school counseling programs have with students at their schools and across the district. They also share what they have learned leading schools thru the Recognized ASCA Model Program process, and the impact and benefits of becoming RAMP recognized. Angela Shanahan is a school counselor in a neighborhood high school in Chicago Public Schools (CPS) with experience at the middle school, high school and district level. It was during her CPS internship in 2011 that she was first introduced to the Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) application process, with the high school receiving the award. Then after transitioning to a middle school and getting a few years under her belt, she decided to RAMP again. Through these experiences, Angela was able to network with counselors from other schools and better understand the impact we can make at a district level. Angela has been an ASCA RAMP reviewer for over four years and works as a Co-RAMP Coordinator for Chicago Public Schools with Karen Devine. In their second year as coordinators, they streamlined the supports for schools in their RAMP pipeline. Angela is also an adjunct professor at her alma-mata, Loyola University Chicago, where she teaches Foundations of School Counseling to first year graduate students. During her spare time, she enjoys being active and spending time with her husband and three young children. Karen Devine has been a passionate teacher, counselor, coach, and district leader in the Chicago Public Schools for 30 years. She leads with the mantra, “be gentle with your children, for they will teach their children”, which she has written on a cloth embroidered by her Grandmother. While working as a high school counselor in the second most-populated school in the district, Karen has been able to transform the school counseling program to provide equitable access for students with long-term, successful results. In addition to being a practicing high school counselor, and leading her school through its fourth RAMP application, Karen also serves as the District's Co-RAMP Coordinator with Angela Shanahan. Through innovative Tier 1, 2, and 3 practices, along with a cultivated resource guide, Karen has helped the District revitalize counseling programs at both the elementary and high school levels. Karen and Angela have presented about their work at the district, state, and national levels. As a running coach and yoga instructor, Karen emphasizes the mind/body connection within her counseling philosophy. Through creative drills, movement, walk-and-talk, and art therapy, students learn to be a proactive partner in realizing their potential.
Join us on Wednesday, March 2 @ 6pm EST for an hour-long special conversation. The first half hour will be with Kalyn Belsha to talk about what she is hearing from educators nationally about the history and political science lessons that are being cut short in fear of punishment for violating policies and laws regarding anti-racism lessons. Kalyn is a national education reporter for Chalkbeat based in Chicago. She previously covered education for The Chicago Reporter, Catalyst Chicago, and the suburban Chicago Tribune. She is a former Spencer Fellow in Education Reporting at Columbia University and has taught journalism at Loyola University Chicago. She holds a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University. The 2nd half hour features educator, Dr. Winnie Williams-Hall to share her strategies for thoughtful, responsible conversations on difficult subjects. Williams-Hall is an author/researcher, mentor, restorative justice lead, equity advocate, former case manager and much more. She has and continues to dedicate her life to educating and advocating for youth for over 25 years. She began her career with Chicago Public Schools-CPS in 1996. She worked as a general education teacher before pursuing her real passion- supporting students with learning disabilities. She has been a member of the Nicholson STEM Academy family for the last ten years+ and believes that middle school is her niche. Dr. Williams-Hall believes that continued education as well as professional development enhances teacher growth. It is for this reason that she decided to earn her doctoral degree in educational leadership with an emphasis on supporting diverse learners beyond high-school. Dr. Williams-Hall believes wholeheartedly in EQUITY and ADVOCACY! So, the work continues! Who says that teachers aren't ‘SUPER HEROES?
With the omicron variant spreading like wildfire, COVID-19 cases around the country have shattered previous highs. The federal government has essentially given up on trying to fight the virus and a familiar ghoulish chorus of media pundits and wealthy business executives are berating working people to suck it up and put themselves in harm's way for the sake of the economy. What's worse, workers who stand up for themselves are being viciously vilified and scapegoated for the systemic failures that have put us in this mess.Perhaps no group is facing more backlash right now than educators. Earlier this week, nearly 3/4 of the membership of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) voted to return to virtual work until a deal to implement necessary safety measures is reached with Chicago Public Schools (CPS) or until the city's positivity rate falls below 10%. In response, Mayor Lori Lightfoot and the CPS administration have locked educators out of their virtual classrooms, replaying their actions from last year when COVID cases were surging and teachers were locked out of their employee accounts, and had their pay docked if they refused to return from teaching remotely. In this urgent, unscheduled episode of Working People, TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez talks about the lockout with Ana, a CPS teacher and CTU member, and Quetzalli Castro, a CPS teacher and a delegate and organizer within the CTU.Additional links/info below...Chicago Teachers Union website, Facebook page, and Twitter page:https://www.ctulocal1.org/https://www.facebook.com/ctulocal1https://twitter.com/CTULocal1Working People, "Mini-cast: #SafeReturnOrNoReturn (w/ Paula Ladin & Mariana Ruiz)": https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93b3JraW5ncGVvcGxlLmxpYnN5bi5jb20vcnNz/episode/MGZiZWQ2MjQtZTYyMC00NjhiLWI1ZjgtYWJiMTU5Y2ZjY2Q5?ep=14Quinn Meyer, Block Club Chicago, "Chicago Teachers Say They Want To Return To Classrooms, But They Need Better COVID-19 Safety Measures": https://blockclubchicago.org/2022/01/05/chicago-teachers-say-they-want-to-return-to-classrooms-but-they-need-better-covid-safety-measures/Monica Eng, Axios Chicago, "Chicago Public Schools Cancel Thursday Classes": https://www.axios.com/local/chicago/2022/01/06/chicago-public-schools-cancel-thursday-classes?fbclid=IwAR2gfx0eWCmYPJnuGs1QqfCTXvUxOMPSpK24T2U363I8NS5Yh-lmca-tRdwFeatured Music (all songs sourced from the Free Music Archive at freemusicarchive.org):Jules Taylor, "Working People Theme Song"Help us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-podSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/newsletter-podLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews

The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) system—rife with systemic bias against conservative views of sex and sexuality—has announced its newest effort to cultivate “inclusivity” and “equity” in all of its K-12 schools. The “social justice” activists, puddenheads, and lemmings who lead the CPS have banned all sex-based bathrooms for children and staff. Instead, children and staff are free to use any bathroom they are “comfortable” using. Subjective feelings now trump objective scientific reality in determining bathroom usage policy. All bathrooms are now co-ed. No word yet on how the CPS plans to include and respect children and adults who are uncomfortable sharing bathrooms with opposite-sex persons. Read more...

Thank you to the ASQ Houston chapter 1405 for inviting us to speak at the professional dinner June 20th 2019. It was an honor and a lot of fun for us. This was Darci AKA "The Boss Lady"s public speaking event too. This is Part 1 of a two part episode. Next week we have a special podcast planned in honor of Independence Day and we will release Part 2 the following week. The opening speaker was unable to present, so Darci and Kyle sat down, assessed the situation and put together a topic and podcast and presented this impromptu presentation of #QualityMatters. 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men are victims of domestic violence. Each year, 5 million children in the United States witness domestic violence in their homes. These traumatic experiences profoundly impact children, making them fearful, anxious and always on guard. They may feel worthless, powerless and starved for affection and approval. Children affected by domestic violence, trauma and chronic stress find it difficult to trust and connect with others. They feel unsafe and are often defensive and destructive. On the opposite end of the spectrum, these children may dissociate and shut down. The good news is that we can make a difference. In this episode, Kelly Frazier-Wawire shares her experiences working in Chicago’s public schools with children who have been exposed to domestic violence and chronic stress. Kelly has worked in education for 15 years, spending 10 of these years with Chicago Public Schools (CPS). In 2011, she left the classroom to study clinical social work, providing play-based therapy to children on Chicago’s West Side. Now, Kelly is a Social Emotional Learning Specialist for CPS. Listen as she explains how Conscious Discipline has made a powerful, positive difference in the lives of children who have experienced trauma and violence. Essential Takeaways • Children who witness domestic violence are expected to remain silent about this family secret. They bury feelings of shame in the nervous system, often creating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They may blame themselves and feel isolated and vulnerable. • For these children, the School Family, I Love You Rituals, and Greeting Rituals are especially powerful. • It’s also very important for teachers to change the way they view children who have experienced trauma and their behavior. Behaviors that are often perceived as “calling for attention” are actually “calling for connection.” • Conscious Discipline provides concrete, practical strategies—and hope—to teachers in the most challenging schools. It gives them the skills and tools needed to support students who have witnessed ongoing violence and experienced chronic stress. This can restore the joy of teaching and prevent teachers from burning out. • Conscious Discipline fulfills essential needs such as safety and order, a schoolwide supportive environment, trust, shared power, and social emotional learning for both children and adults. Together, these components create an environment where children who have experienced trauma can thrive and be successful. Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has held public meetings to get input about its proposal to close up to 129 schools. In this audio report, participants of one such meeting (held on February 16, 2013) criticize CPS's closure scheme. Length 7.3 minutes.
The Chicago Teachers Union sponsored an "Education Summit on School Closings" on December 8 at Marshall High School (on Chicago's West Side). According to the CTU website: "The meeting... provide[d] training to school leaders on how they can engage the broader community against increasing charter school initiatives and pending school closings by Chicago Public Schools (CPS)." High School students Marroz and Lucy were there. Here is their report.
