Send us a textLearning practical skills such as surgery is challenging. In this episode of Doctors at Work, Brian Westerberg tells me about mental imagery.
In 1984, The Replacements were gaining a reputation as fun live punk band, always delivering loud, raucous tunes with setlists full of covers and aggressive originals. They intentionally thwarted management's efforts to get them on bigger labels by sabotaging shows they knew record company reps would be attending. The Minneapolis quartet of Paul Westerberg on vocals, Bob Stinson on guitar, Tommy Stinson on bass and Chris Mars on drums carved out a loyal following and had begun to win over fans around the country thanks to opening for REM. But Westerberg's songwriting, especially his lyrics, were too strong to be for only those moshing around through a drunken haze. With Let It Be, the band explores more personal themes (Unsatisfied, Answering Machine, Androgynous) and captured more melody than they had previously. They still had plenty of straight ahead punk songs (We're Comin' Out, Tommy Got His Tonsils Out, Gary's Got A Boner) but also tried to empathize with those who might not understand the world around them and how to relate (Sixteen Blue). Westerberg's lyrics are personal and poignant and still resonate to this day. Plus, there's a KISS cover song on the album so what's not to like? We didn't find this record until later in life but if you're unfamiliar, I think you'll like a lot of what you hear as we delve into deep topics we don't always weigh in on thanks to this punk classic. Emerging from the same mid-90s Chicago scene that saw bands like Veruca Salt, Loud Lucy, Menthol, Triple Fast Action, and Local H get signed to major labels, Fig Dish delivered alternative guitar rock that paid homage to the legends of Mt. Rockmore - Zander, Mascis, Mould, and Westerberg - under the Polygram Records (and subsidiaries) banner. Their discovery is the stuff of legend: the band sent demo cassettes to various major labels with a handwritten note from “Steve,” claiming to have found a band worth checking out, banking on the idea that everyone knows a Steve and the label would think it was a genuine tip. Despite their immediately catchy songs that could easily fit into any alternative rock radio playlist, the band (Blake Smith - vocals/guitar, Rick Ness - vocals/guitar, Mike Willison - bass, Andy Hamilton - drums) struggled to grasp the elusive brass ring. Their single “Seeds” was released with a video but saw limited play on MTV's 120 Minutes. Touring across the country, they opened for acts like Juliana Hatfield, Veruca Salt, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Owsley, and Walt Mink. However, their 1995 album, That's What Love Songs Often Do, produced by Lou Giordano, failed to make a significant impact. Their 1997 follow-up, When Shove Goes Back to Push, recorded under challenging circumstances, also ended up in used CD bins despite featuring some of the catchiest rock tunes of the year. In a last-ditch effort, the band filmed a video for “When Shirts Get Tight” featuring adult film stars in humorous, over-the-top scenarios. The video, too risqué for MTV, became more myth than reality. By 1998, Fig Dish's tenure with Polygram ended unceremoniously. They recorded new songs at Andy Gerber's Million Yen studio in Chicago, hoping for a second chance that never materialized. Smith and Willison went on to form Caviar (known for “Tangerine Speedo”), while Ness and Bill Swartz (who played drums on Shove) formed Ness. Recently, Forge Again Records from Chicago reached out to the band to release their two albums on vinyl for the first time. While the band agreed, navigating the bureaucratic red tape with record labels has been time-consuming. In the meantime, Forge Again asked if Fig Dish had any unreleased material, leading to the release of their 1998 demos as Feels Like the Very Second Time on vinyl. In this interview, Smith and Ness reveal there was no dramatic story behind the band's breakup; the members remain friends and stay in touch. While they won't be quitting their day jobs to relive their (less than) glory days, there's a strong possibility that Fig Dish will release new material in the near future. What makes an band a band? Is it the songwriter? The singer? The relationship between the band members? This time, we go a bit close to home. The Replacement's are, arguably, one of the greatest acts of the 1980s, one of the greatest to emerge from the US punk scene that would eventually birth the Pixies, REM, and Nirvana. But, it all came crashing down with their last album, fuelled by professional regrets, personal losses, and the fatigue of substance abuse. Is All Shook Down a The Replacements album? It features all four members of the line up of the time. The songs are penned by Westerberg. They have production hints ago-go that point toward the Replacements... Yet, it was intended originally as Westerberg's first solo album. It has a long catalogue of session musicians (including Abraham Lincoln). It doesn't quite feel like The Replacements? Andrew and Sam don't know. Anything. ### Riffs of the week #### Dr Sam's Riff - Roots Manuva - Join the Dots (1.25) #### Andrew's Riff - Slift - Ilion (8:16) ### Dr Sam's track choices 1. One Wink at a Time - The Replacements (0.30) 2. Attitude - The Replacements (1.15) 3. My Little Problem - The Replacements (1.15) 4. Sadly Beautiful - The Replacements (0.20) ### Andrew's track choices 1. Merry Go Round - The Replacements (2:30) 2. Sadly Beautiful - The Replacements (1:50) 3. Bent out of Shape - The Replacements (opening) 4. All shook down - The Replacements (1:50) 5. My Favourite Thing - The Replacements (1:03) **Andrew's notes** Merry Go Round video - Westerberg looking bored, Tommy yawning One wink at a time has nice sax throb Tracks have Westerberg mumbled intros like classic Matts Very meandering, doesn't grab me immediately Banjos? Fucking banjos? Surprising Paul lived to finish the album, he was smoking speedballs They got fired after wearing Petty's wife's dresses on stage. Sadly Beautiful has a Lovely viola in it played by John Cale! Bent out of shape opener sounds like we're back to classic Replacements, even down to the lyrics The title is a classic Matts switcheroo Very country, I think Westerberg chose Slim Dunlap because he was a country guitarist Westerberg sounds drunk Ocarina played by John Cale! I can hear a lot of influences from this album in current 6music style bands Ends reasonably well, but the last track sounds like Randy Newman The band went from hating music videos to winning an award for the ‘when it began' single from this album Abe Lincoln gets a credit according to Wikipedia All replacements members only play on one track, so this is NOT a replacements album LETTERS Briggs recommendation Matt screaming at his headphones Email us - beatmotel@lawsie.com

Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Programledare: Anna Bellman

Abstract: EEG {beta}-bursts observed over the medial frontal cortex are claimed to mediate response inhibition despite their infrequent occurrence. The weak association with stopping behavior is supposed to be a by-product of the low signal-to-noise ratio of EEG recordings. We tested the premise that {beta}-bursts are more common within the cerebral cortex and more directly associated with response inhibition. We sampled simultaneously EEG and intracortical local field potentials (LFP) within the medial frontal cortex (MFC) of two macaque monkeys performing a response inhibition task. Intracortical {beta}-bursts were just as infrequent as those in EEG and did not parallel the likelihood of canceling a planned response. Cortical {beta}-bursts were more prevalent in upper layers but were not synchronized across a cortical column or with EEG {beta}-bursts. These findings contradict claims for a causal contribution of {beta}-bursts during response inhibition, provide important constraints for biophysical and cortical circuit models, and invite further considerations of {beta}-burst function in cognitive control. D., Xiong, Y., Westerberg, J. A., Maier, A., Desimone, R., Miller, E. K., Bastos, A. M. Abstract: The mammalian cerebral cortex is anatomically organized into a six-layer motif. It is currently unknown whether a corresponding laminar motif of neuronal activity exists across the cortex. Here, we report the discovery of such a motif in the power of local field potentials (LFP). We implanted multicontact laminar probes in five macaque monkeys and recorded activity across layers in 12 cortical areas at various hierarchical processing stages in all cortical lobes. The anatomical laminar locations of recordings were histologically identified via electrolytic lesions. In all areas, we found a common spectrolaminar pattern characterized by an increasing deep-to-superficial layer gradient of gamma frequency LFP power peaking in layers 2/3, and an increasing superficial-to-deep gradient of alpha-beta power peaking in layers 5/6. Our results show a functional dissociation between superficial and deep layers that is preserved across the cortex, suggesting a ubiquitous layer and frequency-based mechanism for cortical computation. “A Complete History Of Dreams” Alright, so Philip Stevenson has made some of my favorite albums of all time. I first heard his band Carnival Of Souls when I was 19 and that album, which is called Flop, is in my top ten of all time. Stevenson is one of the most consistent, thrilling and rousing singer songwriters out there and yeah, a lot of critics compared him to Westerberg or Elliott Smith and to be fair, those comparisons are not off the mark. But let's not stop there. Stevenson is a songwriter of breathtaking talent—his compositions range from snarling rockers to ragged waltzes and like a great painter, each of his numbers have texture and nuance that unfold layer after layer with each repeated listen. Stevenson played in Quinine after Carnival of Souls broke up and after that band called it a day, he started putting out staggeringly great solo albums one after the other. From Starless to Azalea, Stevenson's work aches with longing, rings with precision and shines with night-kissed melodies and soaring choruses. His new three disc set A Complete History Of Dreams is a powerful triptych of windswept numbers like High For The Weekend, fuzzy rockers like Rachel I'm Sorry About Your eyes and the endlessly lovely Everybody's An Ocean which will make you feel like being lost at sea is about the most beautiful thing the world can offer. Of the set, Stevenson says, “The last few years for everyone were like a bad dream—we all had to turn them into art in order to adore them…” www.nighworldrecords.bandcamp.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

A few weeks ago, fans of The Replacements noticed that a new live record was starting to appear on vinyl distribution lists. Most at first assumed this was a bootleg, but it turns out tht the Live At Riot Fest Toronto was in fact a legitimate live album. Or sort of, as many rumors starting floating around. Tommy Stinson had reportedly made a deal with a distributor to release it, but some have said that Paul Westerberg had actually vetoed the deal. In a series of DM’s with the distributor, it was verified that Stinson had set up the deal to put it out but there was no word on the Westerberg rumor. It’s also the first in a series of three live releases, as the other two Riot Fest shows in Chicago and Denver are currently being pressed. The record itself is quite great. The source is a soundboard recording, although it’s not a remixed multi-track. Tonight’s show features a few songs from this record, along with a number of other albums that have been played in the Hudson household these last few weeks. I’ve also included a handful of songs that Frank Turner performed at Total Drag on July 12 […]
