Brian and Charles (2022) is a Welsh comedy drama directed by Jim Archer with a screenplay by David Earl and Chris Hayward, who also star in the film. Brian (David Earl) is a lonely inventor living in rural Wales, he builds unusual contraptions that serve little purpose and barely function. On one of his scavenger trips he finds a mannequins head and he decides to create a robot to keep him company. During a thunderstorm the robot is activated and takes on a personality of his own called Charles Petrescu (Chris Hayward). Brian and Charles is a quirky and warm hearted film about friendship, loneliness and self discovery. It won't be for everyone, but if this is your thing you'll have a lot of fun with it. Two of the country's largest wholesale markets are on the brink of closure. The City of London Corporation has decided to shut the historic meat market at Smithfield and the fish market at Billingsgate, bringing to an end centuries of food history. Sheila Dillon is given a tour of Smithfield market by the historian Matthew Green who describes how Smithfield features in the work of Charles Dickens and was once described as the "kitchen of the universe" by the writer Ned Ward in 1702.The programme hears from the Smithfield traders who work through the night butchering and selling meat to restaurants and shops across London, the South East of England and beyond. There has been considerable opposition to the closure of the markets. More than 37,000 people have signed a petition asking the City of London Corporation to keep the markets where they are including Alicia Weston who we meet at Ridley Road street market in East London. Here fishmongers are concerned about where they will source their supplies if Billingsgate closes. The City of London Corporation chairman Chris Hayward responds. Finally, the author of Hungry City Carolyn Steel and Professor Tim Lang from City University reflect on the importance of wholesale markets in strengthening food supply chains as well as their contribution to the social and cultural fabric of a place.Presented by Sheila Dillon Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Robin Markwell

Disclaimer: SPOILERS!! Juan, Kevin, and Marc review the 2022 film, "Brian and Charles", directed by Jim Archer, starring David Earl and Chris Hayward. It's love at first megabyte as lonely inventor, Brian, creates life and friendship in the form of a robot named Charles, who is made out of a washing machine and other random things. It's pretty fantastic until troubling neighbors come a-knocking and Charles wants to experience more of the world than the green pastures of Brian's quiet village. Will the cowardly Brian find the courage to stand up to a bully? Will Charles get to see his electric dreams come true? Is this a film worth investing an hour and a half into? We discuss all this and more in what is sure to be an a.i.-conic episode. Cheers!
Can a show about a car inhabited by the reincarnated soul of a man's mother tell us something about changing conservative reactions to media? Can a show about a Martian trying to ensure his roommate's boss' dog finds love tell us something about the military industrial complex? How subversive was The Addams Family really and does intent matter to how we understand it today? Jessica and Zach explore all of this and more as they wade into the groovy waters of 1960's fantasy sitcoms.Shortly after sitcoms became the dominant fictional comedic format on television, creators began to experiment with the premise. As American society itself experienced significant cultural upheaval in the 1960s, creators had to use inventive metaphors to tell stories reflective of the social change at their doorstep while also skirting censors and conservative studio executives. Looking through the lens of fantasy sitcoms on the 1960's, Jessica and Zach will see how fantasy sitcoms have been used as a tool to tell stories of marginalized groups and where they have significant blind spots born of the cultural context in which they were created. The Treasury has unveiled its long-promised overhaul of financial regulation, but it's being described (by Bloomberg's Marcus Ashworth) as more of a "big whimper" than a Big Bang for the City. Our UK correspondent Lizzy Burden discusses the proposals with City Minister Andrew Griffith, and we get reaction from Chris Hayward, Policy Chairman of the City of London Corporation. Also in the show, our residential property reporter Damian Shepherd tells Bloomberg's Yuan Potts and Stephen Carroll about the latest figures on soaring cost of renting, and a shortage of student housing. Welcome to the Stupid Hearts Club! The Club for everyone with a Stupid Heart-------------------I have an interesting beast for you all this week. And I don't just mean Teenwolf, who's dick AND Dad we discuss right at the bitter end. No this whole chat on Saturday night was a crazy old monster. It was a classic 3 hour wrestle with showbiz's oldest and moaniest soul who got himself all stuck and mired in Keto chat and other serious issues as I tried to bully, poke and badger him back onto the banter bus.And did it work? Not really. But I'm sure some of you will get some joy out of hearing Nana trying her best.Anyway, apologies for the mismatch in our volumes, I promise to try harder at that this week. I hate technology, but I can't stay mad at it as it allows me to talk to you lot. Also sorry this ep was a day late but I got invited last minute to a glamourous comedy short film festival to represent a film my pal Chris Hayward made called 'Hamsbury Book Club' which he kindly put me in as 'Kenneth', the out of control liar. The film which was screened at the BFI yesterday as part of the excellent LOCO film festival, ended up coming second which was a decent effort. And it meant I got to see my massive eye bags on a cinema screen where they belong. The winner was a short, funny animation called 'I'm Going To Space' by Luke Frangeskou. His mum and dad were there so it's nice that he won. (I suppose)You can watch 'Hamsbury Book Club' here:https://vimeo.com/327068886-------------------If you like what I do and you want to support me financially, as well as get access to some cool extras, please take a look at my Patreon! Brian and Charles is about an awkward and lonely inventor, Brian, who lives in rural Wales. He rarely makes contraptions that are useful or work right, but one day, he finally creates a robot. Charles Petrescu, built out of an old washing machine and a mannequin, becomes Brian's friend. But as Charles becomes more and more curious and self-aware, he decides he wants to explore the world on his own. Actor David Earl is a comedian and came up with the eccentric character of Brian as a bit on the stand up circuit in the UK. One day on an internet radio call in show, a friend called in to interact with David's character using computer voice simulation software. Fellow actor and comedian Chris Hayward heard it, came up with the idea of Charles as Brian's robot sidekick, and the two took it on the road as a live show. Chris built the Charles robot character as a costume, and another friend would type in what Charles would say into the voice simulator to interact with the audience. In 2017, the two teamed up with director Jim Archer to make a short film about the characters, and it did well at festivals. After that, the UK production company Film4 backed developing the script into a feature film. For the feature version of Brian and Charles, director Jim Archer decided to expand on the mockumentary style. He wanted it to look like a real documentary, with a serious dramatic and cinematic look rather than as a wink and a nod to other mockumentaries. The friends were inspired by the documentaries American Movie and Monster Road – true stories about lonely people desperate for their dream to come true. Brian and Charles premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and is currently playing in theaters. https://www.focusfeatures.com/brian-and-charles/watch/ Jim Archer: Instagram & Twitter: @alrightjim David Earl: Instagram @davidearlhello Chris Hayward: https://www.curtisbrown.co.uk/client/chris-hayward Charles Petrescu has his own twitter account: @CharlesPetrescu Find out even more about this episode, with extensive show notes and links: http://camnoir.com//ep173/ Sponsored by Hot Rod Cameras: www.hotrodcameras.com Sponsored by Arri: https://www.arri.com/en The Cinematography Podcast website: www.camnoir.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheCinematographyPodcast Facebook: @cinepod Instagram: @thecinepod Twitter: @ShortEndz
