Disclaimer: SPOILERS!! Juan, Kevin, and Marc review the 2022 film, "Brian and Charles", directed by Jim Archer, starring David Earl and Chris Hayward. It's love at first megabyte as lonely inventor, Brian, creates life and friendship in the form of a robot named Charles, who is made out of a washing machine and other random things. It's pretty fantastic until troubling neighbors come a-knocking and Charles wants to experience more of the world than the green pastures of Brian's quiet village. Will the cowardly Brian find the courage to stand up to a bully? Will Charles get to see his electric dreams come true? Is this a film worth investing an hour and a half into? We discuss all this and more in what is sure to be an a.i.-conic episode. Cheers!

As the year winds down we take a look at three very different foreign films from 2022 that we've heard were worth our attention. Are they? Tune in and find out! Up first, we take a look at Bollywood's top film of 2022, RRR, about a duo of freedom fighters who have to rescue a young girl and defeat the British rule, all while performing over-the-top stunts and a few musical numbers as well. Next, Gaspar Noe examines the lives of an elderly couple as they struggle with aging and eventually death in the somber split-screen drama Vortex. And finally, a solitary Welsh man builds a robot to keep him company in the quirky indie British comedy Brian and Charles. All this plus, solidarity for Sean and his toilet troubles, Thanksgiving recaps, Parker goes to a spooky circus, we pay our respects to Albert Pyun, found prison porno, expensive 4K releases and much more! With the UK heatwave a distant melting memory, attentions turns to the last sizzling hot content. Including: The Gray Man, Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special, Bosch: Legacy, Black Bird, and sleeper hit horror film The Black Phone. A long - some might say rambling - edition of Reel News focuses on the supposed decline of Netflix and their looming content crisis. Everyone has felt lonely at some point in their lives. Eating lunch by yourself, joining an empty Call of Duty lobby, we've all been there. But have you ever been so isolated that you built a robot using a washing machine and a mannequin head? That is the story of Brian and Charles, a lovely British comedy with a heart of silicon.

This week's Empire Podcast sees someone new and noteworthy ease themselves into the fourth chair, as Eddie Hamilton, the brilliant editor of Top Gun: Maverick and the forthcoming double whammy of Mission: Impossible 7 and 8, joins the podteam — Chris Hewitt, James Dyer, and John Nugent — for the duration of the show. So, as well as picking Eddie's brains for tales of editing Maverick and getting the odd tip or ten, he joins us to tackle this week's listener question (about the best fourth instalments in film franchises), and discuss the week's movie news (this episode was recorded before news broke of James Caan's death; we'll discuss the legendary Mr. Caan next week), and we think you'll agree that he's a most welcome addition to the team. Elsewhere, the team review Thor: Love And Thunder, and Brian And Charles, and Chris has an audience with the wonderful Jenny Agutter, star of next week's sequel, The Railway Children Return. The two of them talk about that, and about some of the milestones in her incredible career, including An American Werewolf In London, her cameo in Darkman and, of course, her appearances in the MCU. Brian and Charles is about an awkward and lonely inventor, Brian, who lives in rural Wales. He rarely makes contraptions that are useful or work right, but one day, he finally creates a robot. Charles Petrescu, built out of an old washing machine and a mannequin, becomes Brian's friend. But as Charles becomes more and more curious and self-aware, he decides he wants to explore the world on his own. Actor David Earl is a comedian and came up with the eccentric character of Brian as a bit on the stand up circuit in the UK. One day on an internet radio call in show, a friend called in to interact with David's character using computer voice simulation software. Fellow actor and comedian Chris Hayward heard it, came up with the idea of Charles as Brian's robot sidekick, and the two took it on the road as a live show. Chris built the Charles robot character as a costume, and another friend would type in what Charles would say into the voice simulator to interact with the audience. In 2017, the two teamed up with director Jim Archer to make a short film about the characters, and it did well at festivals. After that, the UK production company Film4 backed developing the script into a feature film. For the feature version of Brian and Charles, director Jim Archer decided to expand on the mockumentary style. He wanted it to look like a real documentary, with a serious dramatic and cinematic look rather than as a wink and a nod to other mockumentaries. The friends were inspired by the documentaries American Movie and Monster Road – true stories about lonely people desperate for their dream to come true. Brian and Charles premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and is currently playing in theaters. https://www.focusfeatures.com/brian-and-charles/watch/ Jim Archer: Instagram & Twitter: @alrightjim David Earl: Instagram @davidearlhello Chris Hayward: https://www.curtisbrown.co.uk/client/chris-hayward Charles Petrescu has his own twitter account: @CharlesPetrescu Find out even more about this episode, with extensive show notes and links: http://camnoir.com//ep173/ Sponsored by Hot Rod Cameras: www.hotrodcameras.com Sponsored by Arri: https://www.arri.com/en The Cinematography Podcast website: www.camnoir.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheCinematographyPodcast Facebook: @cinepod Instagram: @thecinepod Twitter: @ShortEndz
Daytime Emmy awards winners so far! Dawn saw "Brian and Charles," should we? RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 7 is still shining bright! What would our strategy be? Am I the Asshat for never wanting to host a family function after this happened?
BRIAN AND CHARLES follows Brian, a lonely inventor in rural Wales, who spends his days building quirky, unconventional contraptions that seldom work. Undeterred by his lack of success, Brian decides to build a robot for company. ‘Charles' is not only Brian's most successful invention, but he appears to have a personality all of his own and quickly becomes Brian's best friend, curing his loneliness and opening Brian's eyes to a new way of living. However, Charles creates more problems than Brian bargained for, and the timid inventor has to face-up to several issues in his life; his eccentric ways, a local bully, and the woman he's always been fond of but never had the nerve to talk to. BRIAN & CHARLES is a feel-good comedy about friendship, love, and letting go. And a 7ft tall robot that eats cabbages. Director Jim Archer joins us for a conversation on how the project came into his life, finding the right location for evoking the off-kilter ambiance of the story and capturing the mixture of quirky, funny and endearing that has allowed BRIAN AND CHARLES take hold of audiences everywhere it has been screened. Today we're sitting down with David Earl and Chris Hayward from Focus Features' upcoming title, “Brian and Charles.” The film follows Brian (David Earl), a lonely inventor in rural Wales who spends his days building quirky, unconventional contraptions that seldom work. Undeterred by his lack of success, Brian attempts his biggest project yet: an artificially intelligent robot named Charles (Chris Hayward), who learns English from a dictionary and has an obsession with cabbages. What follows is a humorous and entirely heartwarming story about friendship, family, finding love, and letting go.David Earl is a comedian, best known for his comedy character Brian Gittins. He has featured in several projects associated with Ricky Gervais, most notably as Kevin "Kev" Twine in the comedy-drama Derek, Extras, After Life and the film Cemetery Junction.Chris Hayward is a writer/performer with extensive experience of the UK comedy scene. He has written for shows including Cardinal Burns and Trollied, and landed development deals with Channel Four, Sky, BBC, ABC, Fox and CBS. As an actor, he has appeared in shows such as The It Crowd, King Gary, Pls Like, and Friday Night Dinner. Our mission is putting a spotlight on beautiful stories with phenomenal performances. “Brian and Charles” achieves this with such ease – at its core it's a uniquely charming story that tackles some complex themes in a way that leaves audiences filled with joy, and most importantly, hope.Brian and Charles:Directed by Jim ArcherWritten by David Earl and Chris HaywardProduced by Rupert MajendieExecutive Produced by Damian Jones, Mary Burke, Lauren Dark and Ollie MaddenStarring David Earl, Chris Hayward, Louise Brealey, James Michie and Nina SosanyaThe Smith Society Podcast: This is the Smith Society, a podcast about storytellers and storytelling. Sundance Film Festival 2022 coverage continues for Rosa and Cat. In this episode, they review four films from the festival: "Call Jane" Dir. Phyllis Nagy Chicago, 1968. As a city and the nation are poised on the brink of violent political upheaval, suburban housewife Joy leads an ordinary life with her husband and daughter. When Joy's pregnancy leads to a life-threatening condition, she must navigate a medical establishment unwilling to help. Her journey to find a solution to an impossible situation leads her to the “Janes,” a clandestine organization of women who provide Joy with a safer alternative — and in the process, change her life. "Marte Um (Mars One)" Dir. Gabriel Martin The Martins family are optimistic dreamers, quietly leading their lives in the margins of a major Brazilian city following the disappointing inauguration of a far-right extremist president. A lower-middle-class Black family, they feel the strain of their new reality as the political dust settles. Tércia, the mother, reinterprets her world after an unexpected encounter leaves her wondering if she's cursed. Her husband, Wellington, puts all of his hopes into the soccer career of their son, Deivinho, who reluctantly follows his father's ambitions despite secretly aspiring to study astrophysics and colonize Mars. Meanwhile, their older daughter, Eunice, falls in love with a free-spirited young woman and ponders whether it's time to leave home. "Emergency" Dir. Carey Williams Straight-A college student Kunle and his laid-back best friend, Sean, are about to have the most epic night of their lives. Determined to be the first Black students to complete their school's frat party legendary tour, the friends strap in for their ultimate assignment, Solo cups in hand. But a quick pit stop at home alters their plans when they find a white girl passed out on the living room floor. Faced with the risks of calling the police under life-threatening optics, Kunle, Sean, and their Latino roommate, Carlos, must find a way to de-escalate the situation before it's too late. "Brian and Charles" Dir. Jim Archer An endearing outlier, Brian lives alone in a Welsh valley, inventing oddball contraptions that seldom work. After finding a discarded mannequin head, Brian gets an idea. Three days, a washing machine, and sundry spare parts later, he's invented Charles, an artificially intelligent robot who learns English from a dictionary and proves a charming, cheeky companion. Before long, however, Charles also develops autonomy. Intrigued by the wider world — or whatever lies beyond the cottage where Brian has hidden him away — Charles craves adventure.
