Much of my conversation with Chris Pearce centered around being flexible in your style and leading authentically. Chris started his career in the Army, then spent a number of years in leadership roles in transport organisations such as FedEx, Linfox and MaxiTrans, and is now with ecoDynamics as Group Fleet and Asset Manager. The connection between flexibility and authenticity is always an interesting one. With some coaching clients, there is a challenge about being flexible in your style VERSUS being authentic. How can you be both? If you're being your authentic self, who you truly are, shouldn't you be consistent; people should know what they're getting? Yes. And no. It's how you use various styles that is the key. As Chris reflected on various leadership experiences he'd had, from the military to corporate life, and the impact they'd had on both him, the team and its performance, one of the interesting distinctions he made was between a style, and how you use it. He contrasts two different leaders he experienced early in his career, who both used the command and control style. He noted a significant difference in his experience as one boss wielded the style with a high care factor, and another pushed hard but you could see he wasn't his genuine self. The first used the style for the team, the second used the style for control. The outcomes were quite different – with the first leader, there was better team cohesion, there was never any doubt that they would achieve their goals, the bonds became strong. This set the tone for Chris -  it's OK to be yourself as a leader, and that works better for your team. When you trust that they'll achieve the outcome, they are more likely to. His introduction to corporate life was ‘like walking into a circus without a ringmaster', as roles were so much less clear. This was his turn to create the clarity, to help the team to work towards a common goal, understanding the parts they played. Chris concludes our conversation with three pieces of advice for other leaders; keep learning, treat people as people, and have fun.

Sit or lie down comfortably in a relaxing environment and calm your mind. Begin to breathe consciously. Start slowly and inhale ever deeper until you are filling your lungs completely. Maintain a steady rhythm breathing in fully from your belly. On the exhales simply let the air go. Keep count and continue until you get to 30-40 breaths. After the final exhale try holding your breath for 1-3 minutes. This is the retention time. When the urge to breathe arises take one more deep breath and hold it for 10-15 seconds. This constitutes one cycle” “this should be somewhat strenuous but never uncomfortable. If it becomes too hard or unpleasant, stop and try again later. You will get better with practice. Just stay relaxed but focused” “Never perform the breathwork in or around any body of water, while driving or in any environment where loss of consciousness can have serious consequences” Always consult a physician prior to engaging in any exercise or fitness routine to make sure you are healthy to do so.

When I sat down with Chris Pearce I really wanted to talk about his father's Line of Duty Death and how that impacted him. And we did, but we went for an hour before we got there! Chris and I spent several years working together at fire Station 12 which may explain why he and I can't get to the main point with out our conversation meandering a bit! Key Takeaways: Understand context and the role of a particular piece of content at a particular time. Consider how a customer is feeling -- their state of mind -- at a particular time. It doesn't have to be highly creative... it can be utilitarian instead of crazy creative. This approach can be extremely effective in terms of understanding the job that needs to be done. Then, if you need extra creativity at certain touch points, that's where you'll have more time to shine. Look at neuroscience techniques to understand brand purchase and shopping behavior. It comes down to reward minus pain. Manage the balance between anticipated reward versus likely pain (like price!). Think about how the brain receives content; it doesn't have a "brand" button. Most people don't think about marketing from this perspective during their day-to-day. Are you? AI is not going to be as scary as nuclear weapons. But you should also remain mindful of how AI can help you in powerful ways. What affect will tech have on behavior change? How will AI help your bottom line and long-term advocacy? That's the job of tech and AI as the change of pace (things are speeding up) and stretched marketing teams are struggling to keep up.
