Once again, chaos is unleashed. This time, it comes in the form of ‘Coagulated Bliss'. The new album from grindcore legends, Full of Hell. It will be released on April 26th, 2024, via Closed Casket Activities. Full of Hell are back, and while they are as horribly intense as ever, this album comes with a deeper focus on song-writing. The chaos is still there, don't be fooled, but there are so many clear attempts to make this a tighter and more absorbing listen. Something that is reflected in both the variety and length of many of the tracks. Full of Hell aren't standing still, and nor will you once you get your ears around Coagulated Bliss. For Episode 75 I had a conversation with Tom Cavanaugh. We mostly talked about his time playing in bands in Syracuse. The bands we discuss include Blood Runs Black, Hermon Dekalb, Darker Day Tomorrow, and Santa Sangre. This is the first time that I can think of that I've interviewed someone who was on tour over 2000 miles away from home when 9/11 happened. Tom also has a really cool story about becoming friends with the band Overcast in the 1990s. Fast forward about a decade and Mike from Overcast was now playing in Killswitch Engage. Tom talks about how he ended up becoming the guitar tech for Killswitch Engage for many years, leading to him traveling the world with the band. I'm sure I could have made an entire episode just asking him questions about all of the people he met and experiences he had during these years. I also could have spent an entire episode asking Tom about all of the classic Syracuse Hardcore bills some of his bands were on. Blood Runs Black played some pretty legendary New Year's Day shows, among others. Tom has been living in South Florida for about 20 years and has also even played with a couple bands down there. We also talked about how Santa Sangre has taken on a second life some two decades later, with Closed Casket Activities reissuing their LP. I'm including the link for that as well as the limited cassette that Buske also recently released in the show notes. Dave Bland is one of the most creative drummers currently playing extreme music. While technical wherewithal with blindingly fast blast beats is always appreciated, the ability to adapt to the varied styles present on Full of Hell records as well as the more straightforward death metal of Jarhead Fertilizer requires much more perspicacity. I first met Dave over 10 years ago when he was a high school student who left to go on tour with Full of Hell without his parents' permission. Since then, Full of Hell has grown into one of the best bands in extreme music, and Dave's drumming has become unbelievably impressive. Dave's death metal project Jarhead Fertilizer finally released their debut full length album this year on Closed Casket Activities after letting it marinate for several years. In this interview, Dave discusses his difficult upbringing as well as his late father's run ins with the law — and how those experiences shaped him as well as proving inspiration for Jarhead's music. Dave also discusses his best tips for smoking meats (he works as a chef while not touring) and whether he prefers small or big sunglasses.
