Welcome back to The Patients Speak, where we're combining the business and science innovation of healthcare with the patient voice on how we need to accelerate their journey from diagnosis to wellness. Our guest today is Michael Sapienza, the CEO of the Colorectal Cancer Alliance. We had a wonderful discussion on the CCA's most recent Colon cancer campaign that was beautifully executed by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Brooks Bell partnered with the Colorectal Cancer Alliance to launch LEAD FROM BEHIND to bring awareness to colon cancer, which happens to be preventable cancer!Michael insists that patients should be more proactive and insist that they get screening, especially for this type of cancer.Having lost his mother at 56 years old when she was screened he says that she wasn't proactive in getting a screening. As his primary caregiver, he narrowed down what patients want into two things. They want to live and they want to live longer They don't wanna feel alone. In that respect they have multiple programs in their care pillar:They provide information about biomarkers, surgery, and innovations in clinical trials. They give psychosocial pieces if patients are suffering from depression or anxiety or even temporary feelings of loneliness. In order to bridge the research gap, they are holding a clinical trial summit on November 10 in Washington DC. where the head of the Moon Shot will be giving the keynote speech. In order to open a conversation with all parties involved so as to improve clinical trial access and, and uptake in general. From the CCA campaign, there are a few lessons that he learned that Michael shared:It's important to have the right partners.Always keep in mind why they do what they doYou have to believe in the mission In summary, they are really passionate about getting a solution on how to get people and oncologists in America to increase the uptake of sharing information about clinical trials. They are also involved in traversing all of America, especially rural America navigating patients to get the actual screening. Providing funding through their health equity fund to actually get people in underserved communities to actually get screened. Which has given them the huge task of raising awareness.Michael Sapienza Michael's Website Michael Sapienza is the CEO of the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, the largest colon cancer advocacy group in the country. Charles Griffin, Jr. was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer at the age of 32. Shortly after, he discovered the Colon Cancer Alliance through their Facebook group COLONTOWN. It opened his eyes to the wonderful community of support for those impacted by this disease! Read his story below.   In my 34 years of life, I’ve earned a reputation for being a do-it-all kind of guy. I’m a husband to my college sweetheart Britni, a father to our four young daughters, a former college football star, an avid golfer, a motivational speaker, a YouTube entertainer and a novice screenwriter.  My name is Charles Griffin Jr. and I never thought I would be a stage IV colon cancer patient. I’m reaching out to you today to ask you to join me in supporting the Colon Cancer Alliance. Two years ago, I suffered excruciating abdominal pain while playing golf. With no family history and no additional symptoms, I had to beg my doctor for a colonoscopy which revealed a golf ball-size tumor in my colon. Further testing showed the cancer had metastasized with multiple tumors to my lungs and liver. I was in the prime of my life with a beautiful family and a budding career when I got the worst news imaginable. I had stage IV colon cancer. Shortly thereafter, I discovered the Colon Cancer Alliance through their Facebook group Colontown. It opened my eyes to the wonderful community of support for those of us impacted by this disease. But now that I’m two years into my treatment, I’m eager for a cure, or at least treatment options that aren’t as taxing on my body. That’s why I support the Colon Cancer Alliance and their deep commitment to colon cancer-specific research. The Colon Cancer Alliance has taken an even bolder stance on research going forward, committing publicly to grow its investment in colorectal cancer-specific research to $10 million by 2021. Research that could ultimately save my life. I’m proud that the Colon Cancer Alliance is on the cutting-edge, exploring immunotherapy, biomarkers and personalized medicine. In 2016 alone, the Colon Cancer Alliance, in partnership with the Never Too Young Coalition, funded two grants to help researchers explore young-onset colorectal cancer in an attempt to better understand why people under the age of 50, like myself, are being diagnosed with this devastating disease. This is where you come in. Through your generous donation, the Colon Cancer Alliance will be able to expand its funding for life-saving and innovative research, putting us closer to realizing our vision of eliminating colon cancer in our lifetime. With your support, there will be a future for me and the thousands of other colon cancer patients waiting for a cure. Please give today. I am the reason Tomorrow Can’t Wait. “Being a trumpet player in an orchestra taught me what moves and inspires people.” Michael Sapienza was a world-class orchestra musician traveling and performing around the globe when he discovered that his mom had colon cancer. Not even knowing at first where a colon was located, he dived into research and realized that few resources were available to families affected by this terrible disease. Incredibly, he decided to channel his grief into action, leaving a successful music career to launch a colon cancer foundation! And, as it turned out, many of the skills Michael acquired in his music career – and supporting his family through his mom’s illness - have helped him tune in (pun intended) as a leader. You must listen to this amazing, inspiring interview! What you'll learn The amazing story of how a professional world-class orchestra musician touring in Europe and globe-wide ended up running a cancer foundation About a call from his parents that ultimately transformed his life and life mission How Michael launched the Colon Cancer Alliance and asked for his first "big" donation (only to find out he should have asked for more) Fascinating parallels Michael draws between being a musician with having business and non-profit management acumen How to message and draw support for something that's hard to talk about - cancer - to a broader audience Clever and informative ways his organization gets the word out about colon cancer (hint: get screened beginning 45-50 or sooner if you have history of colon cancer in your family) How Michael copes with ongoing exposure to death and supporting others through sickness and grief What Michael learned about building trust, "storming" phase of group development and his growing edges through their merger And so much more! He has turned his profound grief into action, inspiring and challenging the colorectal cancer community, family, friends and professional associates to follow his lead and dedicate themselves to this cause and the Colon Cancer Alliance mission. Michael was an integral member of the team that led the effort to merge the Colon Cancer Alliance, and the Chris4Life Colon Cancer Foundation creating the nation’s largest colon cancer specific nonprofit. Michael is a member of The Ruesch Center for the Cure of GI Cancer’s Advisory board at Georgetown University. In 2014, Michael received three prestigious industry awards; the David Jagelman, MD Award for advocacy in Colorectal Cancer Awareness by the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the Public Service Award from the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and the Champion Award from Preventing Colorectal Cancer. He regularly appears on TV, and radio programs throughout the United States to promote the importance of increased funding for colorectal cancer research, and early detection. Michael holds degrees from both Northwestern University and Rice University and currently resides in the District of Columbia.

Welcome, Medicare Nation! Today’s guest is Lee Silverstein, who is a colon cancer survivor. Lee is here to discuss the risks, prevalence, and treatments for this disease. Colorectal cancer is the most commonly diagnosed but also the most preventable through proper screening. The American Cancer Society estimates that 95,000 people will be newly diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016. Over their lifetimes, 1 in 21 men and 1 in 23 women will be diagnosed! Colon cancer is clearly not “the old man’s disease” that many of us have been led to believe. Let’s hear Lee’s amazing story! Why has colon cancer become so widespread for people under age 40? “Over the last few years, the rates for diagnosis have remained steady, with a huge increase in the number of cases in people under age 40. It is scary, alarming, and unexplainable by doctors. I recently attended a conference on colon cancer and met a newly diagnosed 23-year-old. The common risk factors are being overweight, a lack of physical activity, a diet rich in red meat, heavy smoking and alcohol use. Keep in mind that you can have NONE of these risk factors and still be diagnosed with the disease, like what happened to me.”   Would you mind telling our Medicare Nation listeners your personal story? “Not at all—I would love to share my story. I had NO risk factors and had just turned 50, living a very health-conscious life. I exercised regularly and was eating smart. I had a colonoscopy in March 2011, and the doctor couldn’t get the scope where he needed it to go. I wasn’t alarmed, but received a call from the doctor two days later saying I had a tumor in my transverse colon. This colonoscopy saved my life!”   Would you share what your treatment was? “I had colon cancer and needed to have the tumor removed; the surgeon was confident that he could remove it all. My cancer was classified as Stage 2, which meant it was borderline as to whether there were benefits to undergoing chemotherapy. I got three opinions and determined that the benefits of chemo did NOT outweigh the risk. My follow-up exam included a CT scan and bloodwork, which showed a small spot on my liver. A biopsy was ordered and showed that my colon cancer had spread to my liver, even though it was a small spot and slow-growing. Surgery was recommended and chemotherapy. I went to Sloan-Kettering, which was the hospital I had been treated at as a child when I had a rare kidney cancer. The liver surgeon there was confident that I would be fine. Surgery was scheduled for January 2013 and I finished chemo treatments in August. In 2014, two small spots on my lungs were discovered. The doctor suspected that it was colon cancer that had metastasized to my lungs. He wanted to treat it with SBRT, a cyberknife-type targeted radiation procedure. In normal radiation, low doses are given over a wide area over a long period of time, with damage to the surrounding tissue. In this procedure, pinpointed high doses are given over a short time. I had the treatment with no side effects, and was even able to continue training for a race. The one spot disappeared and the other shrunk significantly. I’m not cancer-free, but I am stable. The goal of colon cancer treatment is to make it a chronic manageable disease.”   Can you tell Medicare Nation listeners about the Colon Cancer Alliance? “I found this organization when I was first diagnosed. They are the largest patient support non-profit organization for colon cancer, based in Washington, DC. They do research and provide online support.”   Medicare  provides several levels of preventive care and testing for colon cancer: Barium enema is allowed every 24 or 48 months, depending on the risk. Colonoscopy is allowed every 120 or 48 months, depending on the risk. Fecal blood tests are allowed every 12 months. Flexible sigmoidoscopy is allowed every 48 months for people over 50. Multitargeted DNA test is allowed every 3 years for people aged 50-85. This is a new test with many stipulations. Plans, coverage, and co-payments differ. Some procedures are free, but related surgical procedures (like to remove polyps) are NOT free. Tell our listeners about your podcast. “I started The Colon Cancer Podcast about a year ago. I interview survivors, caregivers, and medical professionals. We share stories of struggle, hope, and survival in the face of colorectal cancer.”   Tell us about the “Undie Run.” “These are 5K events sponsored by the Colon Cancer Alliance. We run around in our underwear! Events are held 2-3 times each month, in different cities around the country from February through October. The events are to raise funds and raise awareness of the disease.” Resources: www.ccalliance.org 877-422-2030 Find the Facebook group: Blue Hope Nation Special Bonus!
