Everyone experiences what writer Karen Wade Hayes calls "Too Much Times,” perfect storms where our most demanding challenges meet our most significant weaknesses and can lead to our lowest moments. “Too Much Times” are days, weeks, or whole years marked by too many demands, responsibilities, and burdens and not enough internal and external resources to keep all the balls in the air. They often develop in times of sorrow or sickness. Karen joined us with a reminder that NOTHING is too much for God! The cost of fear: do you hide or shrink back when new opportunities arise? Karen Wade Hayes writes: "Fear can be one of the most significant barriers to accomplishing anything: we worry about failing, disappointing others, being laughed at, or even mocked. We are deeply concerned about what others think and how challenging something might be. Our bravery can be like a turtle, poking its head out to see the world but quickly hiding in its shell again at the slightest noise.”Ever felt like that? Matt's back in town to cover a special concert Matt Bailey is back in Nashville a month after we covered the 2022 CMT Music Awards. This time, he's in attendance of a Music Memorial for Jeff Carson, who passed away from a heart attack in March at the age of 58. Michael Ray, Wade Hayes, Ty Herndon, Lee Greenwood, Heath Wright of Ricochet, Craig Campbell, Rhett Akins, Tracy Lawrence, John Berry, Halfway to Hazard, Danielle Peck, T. Graham Brown and War Hippies performed at the Nashville Palace. Don McLean made a surprise appearance to perform "American Pie." After retiring from country music in the mid 2000's, Carson pursued his other lifelong dream and joined the Franklin Police Department where he remained a dedicated officer until his untimely passing. Carson had begin to revive his music career as he was working on new music at the time of his death. Last year, Carson spoke with us about his latest single, "God Save The World," which we premiered the video digitally in early 2021. The concert was a charity event to benefit the Law Enforcement Assistance Partnership (LEAP), a nonprofit organization that provides assistance to sworn officers of the FPD during unexpected life events. Matt chatted with Ray, Herndon, Greenwood, Wright, Lawrence, Berry, Peck, Brown, and McLean on the red carpet. Before the interviews, Matt and I discuss other aspects of our joint trip in April 2022. We had the honor to cover the Grand Ole Opry our first night in town which included performances by Sara Evans, Tenille Townes, Riders in the Sky and Nate Smith making his Opry debut. Our last day in town included an afternoon ride on the world famous General Jackson showboat where we enjoyed a concert from the Tennessee Legends, where some of Nashville's finest musicians and singers shared the stories and songs from the pride of Tennessee. In Episode 48, Doc takes a look at current events happening in Canada and Ukraine, and breaks down what's happening across the world today and how that compares to America and the freedoms that we have been provided; such as the right to assemble and have free speech (1st Amendment) the right to keep and bear arms (2nd Amendment) and our rights to due process under the law (4th Amendment).  These freedoms and basic liberties have been under attack in our own country, by analyzing what is happening in real time in other countries today, maybe we could gain some perspective and understanding of how important and relevant they are in our world today - and rekindle an understanding of how grateful we should be that we have them! In this week's grind, Doc kicks off the first of three reviews from Freedom Hill Coffee Roasters out of Bellaire, MI.  First up in the chute - "Orchard Country Cherry"! Hello Backstory Fans! Well, This episode marks the end of a looong season 4 for Cat and I. We put out alot of episodes, and talked to many amazing guests. We are happy you have listened to our interviews, and hope you have enjoyed them. We have alot of fun recording with our guests, as well as working with each other. We will be taking a few weeks off to relax a bit, and will return on January 16th with our first new episode of 2022. Be sure to check out our Backstory Sessions Facebook page for some fun contests where you can win a couple cool prizes during our hiatus. We thank you our listeners, and all of our guests for allowing us to bring you the stories and topics we find so fascinating. We would like to wish you all Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a Happy New Year! Our guest this week is singer songwriter Buck Ford. Buck agreed to take time out of his very busy schedule to chat with us about his roots in country music, and has an interesting backstory about how he transitioned from a pro motocross rider to putting a band together to recording and playing alongside some of the biggest names in country music. On the day of our recording, he was getting ready to play a sold out show in his hometown in California to showcase his his 6th album, due out in January. His latest single, "Hearts Gonna Break" is available now. We thank Buck for the chance to sit down and chat, and he gives us some some great insight into his career, how his song ideas evolve, and where he is headed next.   Buck's Bio: Nashville recording artist Buck Ford focuses on keeping that authentic country sound mixed in with his modern style edginess. Bucks influences consist of George Strait, Haggard, Mark Chesnutt, Daryle Singletary, Keith Whitley just to name a few. Buck and his band pride themselves on the fact that their performances “bring back to life” that authentic country sound with an edgy modern new flavor. Buck began his story as a professional motocross racer, riding the circuit for over a decade. He received a full ride endorsement with a Honda team through the West Coast Super Cross Series in 2009. He placed his riding career on hold to pursue his love and passion for country music. Despite his dedication and talent in the professional motocross scene, his heart has always been in country music. Buck is now headlining his own shows playing his own music all over the states as well as internationally. Buck and his hometown band have been successfully playing for over a decade now and Buck has 5 Nashville records under his belt. Buck has performed from major stage concert venues to fairs, festivals, rodeos, clubs, private events, weddings, and corporate events. He and the band have shared the stage with so many of the big names. Daryle Singletary, Jason Micheal Carrol, Steve Azar, Easton Corbin, Justin Moore, Chris Young, Wynonna Judd, Steel Magnolias, Ty Herdon, Cody Johnson, John Michael Montgomery, Aaron Tippin, Jon Pardi, Arron Watson, Clint Black, Wade Hayes, Dustin Lynch and many times with Mark Chestnut. Buck has been able to combine the creative heart of country music with the values learned from his motocross endeavors, of dedication, discipline and perseverance.

After a record deal fell through there was two choices ahead of Springer: go back to the sausage company or become a hit songwriter. Backtracking wasn't an option - so, taking notes from greats like Dean Dillon and Whitey Shafer, Springer began songwriting in earnest. Over the rest of the next decade, Roger Springer enjoyed several big hits with his good buddy and kindred spirit Mark Chesnutt, George Strait, Daryle Singletary, Wade Hayes and a host of the 90s best: from the decade of hats, mullets, square jaws we celebrate the songs of Roger Springer, some of the stories behind them and a good ol' boy who's down home ways and easy-going demeanour didn't seem changed in over three decades and counting in country music.

Join me and Chris for a fascinating look into his life on the cusp of the release of his album and his undying passion for  Cowboy tradition and the modern cowboy lifestyle. For 2019 Chris is set to release a highly anticipated new album. Chris teamed up with Nashville producer, Trent Willmon, who will be producing the album. Chris wrote or co-wrote 11 of the 12 songs to be included on the album and Willmon co-wrote 8 of the 12 songs.  As a songwriter Trent has written many songs that have been cut by other notable artists including Brad Paisley, Eric Church, Little Big Town, Cody Johnson, Blake Shelton, Maddie and Tae, Merle Haggard, Wade Hayes, Randy Houser, Kevin Fowler, Granger Smith, Roger Creager, and many more. Trent also is credited with the Billboard top 5 hit “Keep on Lovin’ You” by Steel Magnolia, and Montgomery Gentry’s #1 hit “Back When I Knew it All.” As a producer Trent has truly shined and is credited in large part for the rise of Nashville’s newest sensation, Cody Johnson. Cody’s Album, “Ain’t Nothin’ to It”, also produced by Willmon reached the #1 spot on the Billboard Country Charts in 2019. Chris was raised in a small town in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Here he developed a love for horses, and everything about the cowboy lifestyle. He was drawn to the old cowboys around town who took him under their wing and taught him about horses. Chris built a love of starting colts and building confidence in young horses. By combining his love for horses and a love for art and photography, Chris started Diehard Cowboy–A company built to share the cowboy lifestyle and his authentic music with others. Chris spends as much time as he can riding horses and starting colts. Chris also works for several ranches to get a reprieve from his regular schedule. You can take a glimpse in this life by following. @Diehardcowboy_ Chris got somewhat of a late start into his music career. Earlier in life the fear of singing in front of other people kept him from getting on stage. Even though Chris never sang in public until he was in college, music was always present. Chris would often write songs while driving, or riding his horses, but singing would only happen around his close friends. Friends soon began to encourage him to sing more and to share his songs. Eventually Chris started writing and recording the songs that he had written but they were only heard by those in his inner circle. A turning point came when Country Musician, Collin Raye, heard a burnt CD of a few of Chris’ songs. Collin asked if Chris would be willing to open an upcoming concert for him. The night of the concert came and Chris faced his fear, took the stage, and sang to a hometown crowd. This was a moment that changed Chris’ life. After encouragement from Collin Raye, Chris set his sights on pursuing his career as a songwriter and performer. It took a lot of  work to overcome his fear. Chris spent a full year singing once a week at a local venue with his guitar before he finally felt he could play for a crowd. Eventually Chris was playing for larger audiences in shows across the country. He played during the Houston Rodeo at NRG park,  and even packed his guitar to Missouri. In 2017 Chris was selected as a finalist at the Kerrville Songwriting Competition in, Kerrville, Texas. Many past finalists had gone on to become notable performers  like, Steve Earl, Tom Russel, Robert Earl Keen, Lyle Lovett, Hal Ketchum, and Zane Williams. Chris has always been a big supporter of the men and women who serve our country and communities. He has written two songs in their honor. “Every Time I Hear the Rain” as well as “He Still Pays the Price.” As a musician Chris sticks to his country roots. He loves playing traditional country music with influences like George Strait, Merle Haggard, and Chris Ledoux. These influences are also reflected in Chris’ writing. Chris writes songs that are authentic and true to his...

In this episode I sat down with Texas native Terry McBride; who was making a run through Texas and was a judge at our TMP Songwriter Competition. Terry scored a #1 (Sacred Ground) as well as a string of Top 5 hits, with his group McBride and the Ride in the 90’s, but that’s only where his songwriting accolades begin… After McBride and the Ride disbanded, Terry began to focus most of his attention on songwriting, and through the years since has had songs cut by other artists such as Garth Brooks, George Strait, Reba McEntire, Hank Williams Jr., Ronnie Dunn, Kix Brooks, Alan Jackson, Trace Adkins, Easton Corbin, Lost Frequencies, Kenny Rogers, John Anderson, Cole Swindell, Jim Lauderdale, Chase Bryant, Clare Dunn, Ricky Van Shelton, George Ducas, David Ball, Casey James, Wade Hayes, Gretchen Wilson, Andy Griggs, Jedd Hughes, Jason Michael Carroll, James Otto, Gord Bamford, Emerson Drive, Rosie Flores, as well as Texas stars Cody Johnson, Jack Ingram, and Josh Ward. In 2004, Terry co-wrote American Idol finalist Josh Gracin’s top five single “Stay With Me/Brass Bed”. He followed that up by co-writing “Play Something Country” with Ronnie Dunn, which was the fastest rising single of Brooks and Dunn’s career and was also the final #1 song for the award-winning duo. Terry has had over 25 songs recorded by Brooks & Dunn, which led to 13 singles and 12 BMI million air awards. So we talk about his musical journey, get the scoop on his latest project and what’s next and pick his brain about songwriting and any advice he has for aspiring songwriters.
