"Through a lot of my life, I've always gone against the grain. Whether that's through skydiving or ultra-running or ditching a very comfortable federal career." Welcome to episode Twenty-Six of the “It Matters To Me Podcast”! I'm your host, Adam Casey, and my guest today is Bobby Gill, Director of Development and Communications for the Savory Institute. But before he assumed that role, this expertly trained Biological Resources Engineer was a lead scientific reviewer at the FDA close to where he grew up in Beltsville, Maryland. That is until he and a couple of friends ran through the streets of D.C. pantless and helped found Cupid's Undie Run, a national non-profit that has raised millions of dollars for neurofibromatosis research since its inception in 2010. Oh, and did I forget to mention that he also was at one point a fairly prolific ultra-running resume and even had his skydiving license with over 800 jumps logged? Since making the leap into the regenerative space at the Savory Institute, he now explores the intersectionality of personal and planetary health, and how to distill the complexity of these issues to new audiences. During our conversation, you'll hear us reference a recent TEDx talk that Bobby gave about his work at the Savory Institute back in 2020 and I really encourage you to give that a listen because the message about holistic land management and its positive environmental impact is a storyline that doesn't get enough attention. From the Children's Tumor Foundation, Simon Vukeli, Chief Marketing Officer, and Volunteer and Philly Cupid's Undie Run Race Director, Sandy Frenia, discussed Neurofibromatosis (NF), a chronic disease in which benign tumors grow into the patient's nerves.  Depending on the severity, it can be undiagnosed until late in life or cause serious complications such as seizures, blindness, deafness, immobility or other impairments.  In some cases, it can lead to rare cancers.  The disease is genetic and that is why the Foundation became the Children's Tumor Foundation, you are born with it, 1 in 3,000 births.   Diagnosis comes from tell-tale birthmarks or through developing symptoms.   The Foundation directly funds research, referrals and hosts the world's largest NF Conference.   Looking to raise money volunteers created the Cupid‘s Undie Run, a ‘brief' fun run that happens in the middle of a party.  In Philadelphia, it will be Saturday, February 19 at Xfinity Live!  Guests wear their ‘Bedroom Best' to help fund the research for a cure, better treatment, and education programs. Today's guest is one of our absolute favs. She oozes body confidence and positivity, but it wasn't always that way… Taryn Brumfitt was on the cusp of getting plastic surgery after her third child when she realised the example she was setting for her daughter. So instead, she posted a nude picture on social media showing how much her body has changed between her bodybuilding days and now. It quickly went viral with more than 3.6 million people viewing and sharing it - including Ashton Kutcher! She then founded The Body Image movement and released a fantastic film called Embrace. They serve to keep outer garments from being soiled or damaged by bodily excretions, to lessen the friction of outerwear against the skin, to shape the body, and to provide concealment or support for parts of it.” Undergarments are generally of two types, those that are worn to cover the torso and those that are worn to cover the waist and legs, although there are also garments which cover both.  Different styles of undergarments are generally worn by females and males (though do you, bb). Undergarments commonly worn by females today include bras and panties (known in the UK as knickers), while males often wear briefs, boxer briefs, or boxer shorts. Items worn by both (and any, all, or none) genders include T-shirts, sleeveless shirts, bikini underwear, thongs, and G-strings. Undergarments are known by a number of terms: Underclothes; underclothing; underwear, smalls, unmentionables, Reg Grundys, or Reginalds. Reg or Reginald Grundy was an Australian entrepreneur and media mogul. I could not find the origin of this use of his name, and it seems he was well-liked. It appears that the primary goal to use “grundies” is that it simply rhymes with “undies.” In the US, women’s underwear may be known as delicates due the recommended washing machine cycle or because they are, simply put, delicate Women’s undergarments collectively are called lingerie, intimate clothing, and intimates An undershirt (or “vest” in the UK) is a piece of underwear covering the torso, while underpants (or “pants” in the UK), drawers, and shorts cover the genitals and buttocks Not wearing underpants under outer clothing is known in American slang as “freeballing” for men, “free buffing” for women, and as “going commando” for either sex. The act of a woman not wearing a bra is sometimes referred to as “freeboobing.” The function of underwear can range from the following: preventing outer garments from being soiled by perspiration, urine, semen, menstrual blood, and feces; women's brassieres provide support for their breasts (although this is now in dispute due to some recent studies which claim that bras may worsen breast sagging due to the inactivity of the ligaments that already support them); men’s briefs serve the same supportive function for their balls and dick; a corset may be worn as a foundation garment to alter a woman’s body shape; men often wear more tightly fitting underwear, such as jockstraps and protective cups, for additional support and protection when playing sports; sports bras provide greater support to women, thus increasing comfort and reducing the chance of damage to the ligaments of the chest during high-impact exercises such as jogging. In cold weather, underwear may also constitute an extra layer of clothing to help keep the wearer warmer.  Underwear may also be used to preserve the wearer’s modesty, such as camisoles and slips under clothes that are sheer Conversely, some types of underwear can be worn for sexual titillation, such as edible underwear, crotchless panties, and thongs Some undergarments may also have religious significance (PICTURES IN THE SHOWNOTES) In Judaism, the tallit katan is often worn beneath the shirt. This is a fringed garment traditionally worn either under or over one’s clothing by Jewish men. It is a poncho-like garment with a hole for the head and special twined and knotted fringes known as tzitzit (TASSELS) attached to its four corners While all four cornered garments are required to have tzitzit, the custom of specially wearing a tallit katan is based on a verse in Numbers 15:38-39 which tells Moses to exhort the Children of Israel to “make them throughout their generations fringes in the corners of their garments.” Following their endowment in a temple, Mormons wear special temple garments which help them to remember the teachings of the temple. These are worn both day and night, and are required for any adult who previously participated in the endowment ceremony to enter a temple They are intended to provide the member “a constant reminder” of the covenants they made in the temple, since members are instructed to wear the garments day and night--i.e. They “should not partially or completely remove any portion of the garment to participate in activities that can reasonably be done with the garment worn properly beneath the clothing,’ such as ‘working in the yard.’” Swimming is given as an example of an activity that would justify removal, but members are further instructed to “put it back on as soon as possible.” The nature of the protection is ambiguous and varies between adherents. In fact, they are sometimes derided as “magic underwear” by non-Mormons Researchers who interviewed a sample of LDS who wear the garments reported that virtually all wearers expressed a belief that wearing the garment provided “spiritual protection” and encouraged them to keep their covenants Some of those interviewed “asserted that the garment also provided physical protection, while others seemed less certain of any physical aspect to protection.” In Mormon folklore, tales are told of Latter-Day Saints who credit their temple garments with helping them survive car wrecks, fires, and natural disasters  The garment was first described in the 1840s as a one-piece undergarment extending to the ankles and wrists, resembling a union suit, with an open crotch and a collar. It was made of unbleached cotton and held together with ties in a double knot A union suit is a type of one-piece long underwear, created in Utica, NY, originating as women’s wear during the 19th century as an alternative to constricting garments. The first union suit was patented in 1868 as “emancipation union under flannel.” It was traditionally made of red flannel with long arms and legs, buttoning up the front, with a button-up flap in the rear covering the buttocks (which was colloquially known as the “access hatch,” drop seat,” fireman’s flap,” and “crap flap,” among other things”) In 1923, a letter from LDS Church president Heber J. Grant stated that after careful and prayerful consideration the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the LDS Church had unanimously decided that specific modifications would be permitted to the garments: Sleeves could end at the elbow; Legs could be shortened to just below the knee; Buttons could be used instead of strings The collar was eliminated And the open crotch was closed Protestors against the LDS church have used the garments to publicly mock and parody the wearing of the garments, including spitting and stomping on them in view of attendees of an LDS Church General Conference in 2003. One protestor reportedly blew his nose into a garment he was wearing around his neck.  A scuffle broke out between a protester and two church members who attempted to take the garments from him In response, the municipality of Salt Lake City planned stronger enforcement of fighting words and hate speech laws for the 2004 conference, in order to avoid a repeat of the conflict. They also enacted new protest buffer zones In Sikhism, one of the five articles of faith is a certain style of underpants similar to boxer shorts and known as the kacchera This tradition started in 1699 as a religious mandate from Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of Sikhism, and the garment is worn by baptized Sihks, serving as a symbol of one’s commitment and dedication to the order of the tenth master It is considered the Guru’s gift and remind the Sikh’s of the Guru’s message regarding the control of the Five Evils or Five Thieves. These are the five major weaknesses of the human personality at variance with its spiritual essence, known as “thieves” because they steal a person’s inherent common senses. They consist of lust, wrath, greed, attachment (love of and attachment to worldly things and relations), and pride.  he primary aim of a practicing Sikh is to subdue these five vices and render them inactive. I hadn’t previously known about the parallels to the Christian Seven Deadly Sins, which are lust, wrath, greed, envy, sloth, gluttony, and pride. In most civilizations this was the only undergarment available. It continues to be worn by people around the world Archeologists have found the remains of loincloths made of leather dating to at least 7000 years ago, including on our old pal Otzi the Iceman. Otzi was found sporting not just some of the earliest evidence of tattoos, but also a goatskin loincloth under his furry leggings. I included two photos of Otzi in the shownotes, one of his original form and one of a reconstruction of what he may have looked like King Tut was apparently buried with 145 spare loincloths In ancient Rome, pants were known as subligaculum, which was a unisex garment. Female performers were known to have also worn an additional “boob tube’ (a flat bit of stretched cloth) to protect their modesty Bras were worn at least somewhat during the 15th century, as evidenced by four medieval bras that were found in a hidden vault underneath floorboards in an Austrian castle. This 2012 discovery “astonished costume historians, who had always declared the bra to be a 20th-century invention.” During the Middle Ages, the loincloth was replaced by loose, trouser-like clothing called braies, which the wearer stepped into and then laced or tied around the waist and legs at around the mid-calf. Wealthier men often wore chausses as well, which covered only the legs By the Renaissance, braies became shorter to accommodate longer styles of chausses, which were also giving way to form-fitting hose, which covered the legs and feet.  Braies were usually fitted with a front flap that was buttoned or tied closed. Know as a codpiece, this allowed men to urinate without having to remove the braies completely  Henry VIII, whose reign ran from 1509-1547, began padding his codpiece, which caused a spiralling trend of larger and larger codpieces that only ended by the end of the 16th century It’s been speculated that the King may have had syphilis, and his large codpiece may have included a bandage soaked in medication to relieve its symptoms He also wanted a healthy son and may have thought that projecting himself in this way would portray fertility Codpieces were sometimes used as a pocket for holding small items During the 16th century, the farthingale became popular. This was a petticoat stiffened with reed or willow rods so that it stood out from a woman’s body like a cone extending from the waist (AKA a hoop skirt. Photo rendition is in the shownotes) Corsets also began to be worn about this time. At first they were called “pairs of bodies,” which refers to a stiffened decorative bodice worn on top of another bodice stiffened with buckram, reeds, canes, whalebone, or other materials. These were not the small-waisted, curved corsets familiar from the Victorian era, but straight-lined stays that flattened the bust The mass production of underwear became possible with the invention of the spinning jenny machines and the cotton gin in the latter half of the 18th century, since they made cotton fabrics widely available Women’s stays of the 18th century were laced behind and drew the shoulders back to form a high, round bosom and erect posture.  Stays became shorter and were unboned or only lightly boned, and started being called corsets. As tight waists became fashionable in the 1820s, the corset was again boned and laced to form the figure. By the 1860s, a tiny (“wasp”) waist came to be seen as a symbol of beauty, and the corsets were stiffened with whalebone or steel to accomplish this.  Tight lacing of a corset sometimes led to a woman needing to retire to the “fainting room”--this was a private room used during the Victorian era to make women more comfortable during the home treatment of female hysteria, particularly for privacy while receiving pelvic massages Jumping through time to discuss used underwear :( The sale of used female underwear for sexual purposes began in Japan in stores called burusera, and they were even sold in vending machines.  With the advent of the internet, which made anonymous mail-order sales possible, some women began selling their dirty panties and other underwear.  Some men find the odor of a woman’s bodily secretions sexually arousing, and will use the panties as a masturbatory aid The sale of dirty panties, sometimes worn for several days and sometimes customized with requested stains, is a significant niche in the sex work field. A far smaller market sells used male underwear to other men Celebrity underwear is sometimes sold. A framed pair of Elvis Presley’s dirty underwear sold for $8k in 2012. Undergarments of Marilyn Monroe, Queen Elizabeth, and Franz Joseph have been sold at auction. Some celebrities, including Jarvis Cocker, Alison Goldfrapp, Nick Cave, Sacha Baron Cohen, Ricky Gervais, Jah Wobble, Fergie, and Helen Mirren have donated their underwear to be sold for charity History of the holiday itself can be traced back to 2003, according to nationalunderwearday.com. The holiday was founded by Freshpair, which is a privately held online retailer of men’s underwear and women’s intimate apparel, headquartered in Fairfield, NJ. The company was founded in 2000. So that means this holiday is now old enough to drive! Freshpair established National Underwear Day in an effort to “shine light on ‘unmentionables’”, starting by advertising heavily congested areas of New York City. In 2012, they promoted the holiday by launching a pop-up shop near Columbus Circle.  In 2013, they advertised the holiday in Times Square by attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people in their underwear. However, the company was tragically unable to break the record, which is currently held at 2,270 by the Utah Undie Run. The event topped out at around 800 people The Undie Run is an event where a large number of people disrobe down to their underwear, and then run. The Utah record was set on September 24, 2011. That run was held to protest Utah’s conservative laws.  COED Magazine, a US magazine marketed to college students, reported that Undie Runs are the “number one university sanctioned event.” The earliest known Undie Run was started by student Eric Whitehead at UCLA in the fall of 2001 Freshpair participates in the annual Underwear Run in Manhattan, sponsored by Aquaphor (my favorite post-tattoo protectant!) From online articles “11 Weird Facts About *Panties* We Bet You Didn’t Know!”, “39 Amazing Facts About Underwear”, “63 Interesting Facts about Underwear” The average American woman owns approximately 21 pairs of underwear Approx. 10% of women own over 35 pairs Trend analysts observe that a woman who wears a g-string is typically a woman who feels more uninhibited and more confident to display her body. Sexually, she is more willing to try different and creative positions Thongs were invented in 1939, after NYC Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia passed a law that nude dancers needed to wear them rather than going bare Sexual researchers note that a woman who chooses to wear white cotton panties tends to be a low maintenance and no-frills type. Researchers note that this is akin to letting a man see her without makeup The same sexual researchers also observe that men who wear the “boyish” briefs “may not be ready to grow up” The average woman will wear six different bra sizes throughout her life A recent survey found that nearly ⅔ of women are wearing the incorrect bra size, and 29% of those women are completely unaware of it Most bras should be replaced every 6 months The size of an average woman is 5’4” and 135 lbs. Featured guest and Runner of the Week, Kim Stemple, gives listeners an update on her health and her organization We Finish Together since her last appearance on TRLS in November and since her story went viral through Runner's World and social media. Go-to, real-food dietitian Serena Marie, RD, talks about the importance of being mindful and having conversations during mealtimes. Kari and Serena also get deep and discuss gratitude. Featured Guest and Runner of the Week: Kim Stemple Kim Stemple, previously featured on “Special Mindful Monday w/Kim Stemple, Founder Of We Finish Together” (Episode 103) gives Kari and listeners an update on her health issues, including a painful nerve condition called sodium channelopathy, a rare mitochondrial disease, benign bone tumors, and lymphoma. Kim is at the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Maryland currently, and her doctors are baffled as to how she's frankly still alive. Kari and Kim recap the Cupid's Undie Run in Washington, DC in February and what a wonderful race it is that goes to charity (Children's Tumor Foundation). She shares what she's learned being in palliative care, which is a multidisciplinary approach to specialised medical care for people with serious illnesses. It focuses on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain, physical stress, and mental stress of a serious illness—whatever the diagnosis. This month, she's hoping to do the Shamrock Marathon's Townebank 8K and the Anthem half marathon in Virginia Beach, VA, then she hopes to do a North Face Endurance Challenge 50K trail race in April. Her palliative care doctor approves of Kim having goals and anything to keep her going, and the 50K will be a family event. Kari mentions “What Happy People Do” (Episode 24) based off of Bronnie Ware's book—some of the top things that people share with her. Kari asked Kim if she felt comfortable sharing, and Kim thinks it's necessary to talk about what happy people do in the face of challenges. Every moment is a gift, and we tend to look at the negative side, and Kim looks at the positive side now since she's been in palliative care. Everyone's journey isn't the same, and we need to talk about other things than being sick and to talk about what makes us happy. Kim tries to look at the present and takes things one day at a time. Things are so much worse if you dread them versus just hoping for the best. Take the happiness as it comes, and don't dread what's to come. Don't sweat Mile 26 of the marathon at Mile 1. Run each mile that you're in. She also talks about wishing she had gotten together with friends more despite the messy house or no makeup. The you is what's inside, not how clean your house is or what's on your face. Just like a runner is a runner no matter how fast you can. Kim's big thing now is to smile at every runner that she sees and to say hi. It calms people down and changes the race experience. Don't let a [test] result (of any kind) measure you. You are not your finishing time in a marathon or how much money you have in a bank account. What you say to someone else defines you as a person. With We Finish Together, the medal is a way to get the ribbon to someone, but it's the words on the ribbon that mean the most. Right now the organization is doing a children's literacy outreach program. They send medals to hospitals, such as to a girl named Ruby. According to the We Finish Together Facebook page, “She received her own medal for strength and courage while battling soft tissue cancer. Since then, Ruby's been paying it forward and handing out medals to her friends at the Children's Hospital of Atlanta.” They use the medals as art therapy! We Finish Together also sends medals to an organization called Back on My Feet, which “uses running and community to motivate and support individuals every step of the way from homelessness to independence” according to their site. Start within your own community to see what you can do and how to be a positive force. No one's day is promised, so find a way to find some happiness in every day. Serena Marie, RD Serena Marie, RD, talks about studies which strongly suggest that children who eat meals with their families have lower BMIs. Maximize the quality time that you have with your family but also better your children's health. Studies focused on three actions: #1: Create the habit if it doesn't exist already of finding time to eat with your family and children. Put meals on the schedule if need be. Kari's husband and son make sure to have breakfast together. They have dinner together at least three times a week. #2: It's also important to spend around 20 minutes at the table during meals. #3: Have positive conversation at the dinner table. Keep the conversation light in general. Kari loves the idea of discussing with her family what was one positive during everyone's day but also what was something each person has failed at (which might sound counterintuitive). Sometimes we're so afraid of failure, that we don't try things. Kari mentions Dr. Carol Dweck of Stanford University who talks about having a fixed or a growth mindset. One of the worst things we can say to a child is that he or she is smart. The most important thing that kids can do is to try. She also mentions Brene' Brown's books Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead and Rising Strong. Kari has inspired Serena to try new things and not to shy away from new challenges. Kari talks about her three vision boards, one of which from November 2013 says the following: Possible Spread a little sunshine Courage Serena tells the story of she and Tim Van Hooser (the “master connector”) in the grocery store. Kari chats about the gratitude jar concept in her house. They write things that they are grateful for on brightly colored sticky notes and place them in the jar. Kari asks what Serena is grateful for, and she says she's happy for a lifting victory during a squat (her heaviest weight to date) recently, and she's enjoying lifting and doing HIIT workouts. Kari is grateful that she's able to get in for her MRIs of her back, brain, and spine quickly. Welcome, Medicare Nation! Today’s guest is Lee Silverstein, who is a colon cancer survivor. Lee is here to discuss the risks, prevalence, and treatments for this disease. Colorectal cancer is the most commonly diagnosed but also the most preventable through proper screening. The American Cancer Society estimates that 95,000 people will be newly diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016. Over their lifetimes, 1 in 21 men and 1 in 23 women will be diagnosed! Colon cancer is clearly not “the old man’s disease” that many of us have been led to believe. Let’s hear Lee’s amazing story! Why has colon cancer become so widespread for people under age 40? “Over the last few years, the rates for diagnosis have remained steady, with a huge increase in the number of cases in people under age 40. It is scary, alarming, and unexplainable by doctors. I recently attended a conference on colon cancer and met a newly diagnosed 23-year-old. The common risk factors are being overweight, a lack of physical activity, a diet rich in red meat, heavy smoking and alcohol use. Keep in mind that you can have NONE of these risk factors and still be diagnosed with the disease, like what happened to me.”   Would you mind telling our Medicare Nation listeners your personal story? “Not at all—I would love to share my story. I had NO risk factors and had just turned 50, living a very health-conscious life. I exercised regularly and was eating smart. I had a colonoscopy in March 2011, and the doctor couldn’t get the scope where he needed it to go. I wasn’t alarmed, but received a call from the doctor two days later saying I had a tumor in my transverse colon. This colonoscopy saved my life!”   Would you share what your treatment was? “I had colon cancer and needed to have the tumor removed; the surgeon was confident that he could remove it all. My cancer was classified as Stage 2, which meant it was borderline as to whether there were benefits to undergoing chemotherapy. I got three opinions and determined that the benefits of chemo did NOT outweigh the risk. My follow-up exam included a CT scan and bloodwork, which showed a small spot on my liver. A biopsy was ordered and showed that my colon cancer had spread to my liver, even though it was a small spot and slow-growing. Surgery was recommended and chemotherapy. I went to Sloan-Kettering, which was the hospital I had been treated at as a child when I had a rare kidney cancer. The liver surgeon there was confident that I would be fine. Surgery was scheduled for January 2013 and I finished chemo treatments in August. In 2014, two small spots on my lungs were discovered. The doctor suspected that it was colon cancer that had metastasized to my lungs. He wanted to treat it with SBRT, a cyberknife-type targeted radiation procedure. In normal radiation, low doses are given over a wide area over a long period of time, with damage to the surrounding tissue. In this procedure, pinpointed high doses are given over a short time. I had the treatment with no side effects, and was even able to continue training for a race. The one spot disappeared and the other shrunk significantly. I’m not cancer-free, but I am stable. The goal of colon cancer treatment is to make it a chronic manageable disease.”   Can you tell Medicare Nation listeners about the Colon Cancer Alliance? “I found this organization when I was first diagnosed. They are the largest patient support non-profit organization for colon cancer, based in Washington, DC. They do research and provide online support.”   Medicare  provides several levels of preventive care and testing for colon cancer: Barium enema is allowed every 24 or 48 months, depending on the risk. Colonoscopy is allowed every 120 or 48 months, depending on the risk. Fecal blood tests are allowed every 12 months. Flexible sigmoidoscopy is allowed every 48 months for people over 50. Multitargeted DNA test is allowed every 3 years for people aged 50-85. This is a new test with many stipulations. Plans, coverage, and co-payments differ. Some procedures are free, but related surgical procedures (like to remove polyps) are NOT free. Tell our listeners about your podcast. “I started The Colon Cancer Podcast about a year ago. I was going to do a whole bit about the wild reindeer catching the zombie virus, but since it's the holidays I won't mess with you. Today we have a really good talk with Bobby Gill from Cupid's Undie Run about his adventure. I'm always a bit hesitant when a publicist reaches out to me about someone or something. I always worry about doing the same interview as 10 other podcasters. That really doesn't add any value to you folks. But, I resonated with Bobby and really enjoyed our chat. He does this ‘aww-shucks we just got lucky' routine but you can tell there's some focus and talent in the background for him and the Undie run to get so big so fast. In section one I'm going to talk about strength training. In section two I'm going to wax poetic about 9 key moments in the runner's journey. Last time I talked to you folks I was rolling off of the Mill Cities Relay and getting ready for the Jeff Galloway ½ in Atlanta. I've continued to have great training weeks and am feeling fairly strong. I treated the ½ marathon as a pace run and didn't taper for it. I have pivoted my training from speedwork to long tempo. From the races I've done recently it shows me that I have enough speed but I need to work on strength and staying power. I raced the previous Sunday then did two hard 1:20 step up tempo runs during the week. I was also fighting some sort of cold all week. A travel race in the middle of December is just the worst timing, but I had to be in Atlanta all week anyhow so I just went down early. It was an opportunity for me to test out my pacing strategy to meet some old friends from the pod-o-sphere community and to check out a new race. I'm not going to go into full race report mode for you here. And I'm certainly not going to debate the Galloway training stuff. It's not for me, but kudos to Jeff for lowering the barrier to entry to running for so many people. He's doing good work with his flock. Overall the race is extremely well managed – everything went off without a hitch. The weather was good – maybe a little warm if you were back in the pack. I ran in short-shorts and singlet. I was soaked when I finished but it didn't affect my running. The course was actually interesting and had some pretty parts for a city course. The defining feature was the hills. I have worked and run in Atlanta for years. I know it's a hilly place. Running a ½ marathon through it is challenging. Jeff told me that it's actually a downhill course because the finish in Piedmont Park is a bit lower than the start. It's a very hilly course. If you know Atlanta you know that they aren't periodic steep hills, like in a New England race where you might have a 500 foot monster somewhere on the course. They are consistent long, shallow uphills and downhills. You're always either climbing or descending. It made it hard for me to execute my pacing strategy. I forgot my Garmin at home and was pacing old-school off my IronMan watch – which isn't a problem for me. I was intending to try to pace at just under my marathon goal pace of 8 min miles. The hills made pacing kind of impossible so I just ran by feel. This is a course where it would have really helped to know the course. The course is a bit deceptive at the end because they run you by and around the park a couple times. You are essentially circling the finish line for 3+ miles. Tim Cleary had told me there was a big hill at mile 9ish and then a steep downhill into the park. That was the landmark I was looking for. There was a big hill at the 9 mile mark, but that wasn't the one Tim was talking about. There was the steepest hill on the course around 10 miles with a long steep decent after, then you turn into the park. Tactically this is where I screwed up. After climbing the big hill in good order I got to the steep downhill and thought to myself “The turn into the park is at the bottom of this hill so I'll spend what I have here on the downhill and cruise into the finish.” The problem with that was once you turn into the park it's still a couple miles of rolling hills to get to the finish. I struggled the last couple miles in the park on dead legs. Not what I was intending to do but still finished under my target average pace. That tells me I probably went out to fast. I hung around the finishing chute giving out encouraging words and high fives in the warm Atlanta sun. …I'll tell you a couple of ‘big data' stories from the week. Now it's the holiday season so I expect to get my share of junk mail from people trying to sell me stuff. I noticed over the last month I've been getting flooded with targeted advertisements for fancy cars. Every day I get some glossy brochure and personal invite letter from Lexus and Jaguar and Range Rover. I was trying to figure out what demographic inflection point I had tripped in the great consumer database in the cloud. Why did BMW, Mercedes and Audi think that I was ripe for the picking? I figured it was probably my age and my income level. I'm ripe for a mid-life crisis car. But it all seemed rather sudden and targeted. Then I was out on a long run with my friend Ryan in the Town Forest last weekend and we were talking about it. Ryan owns a marketing firm. We figured it out. You see, all the college financial data is public domain data. The great marketing data bureaus know that I just sent my last college tuition check. And that same day the handsome glossies for shiny, new, carefully hand-crafted by Austrian engineers, glinting in the desert sun as a slightly greying athletic male model grins at the abundance of life, while leaning into a challengingly scenic corner in the road from a warm, self-heating leather seat…began arriving by the bundle in my mail box. The money raised benefits the Children's Tumor Foundation (CTF), a nonprofit organization that funds research to fi nd treatments and a cure for neurofibromatosis (NF). Presented by Sock It To Me as the official underwear sponsor, Cupid's Undie Run combines a pre-race party, a one mi le -ish undie run and an after party. Cupid's Undie Run will take place on February 13 and February 20. In 2010, founders Brendan Hanrahan, Chad Leathers and Bobby Gill set off on a mission to raise awareness and donations to CTF after Chad's brother was di agnosed with NF, a genetic disorder that can cause tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body, which can lead to blindness, deafness, learning disabilities, cancer and chronic pain. Affecting more than two millio n people, NF often requires patients to undergo numerous medical procedures. Since 2010, Cupid's Undie Run has donated nearly $8 million to CTF. A nationally recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit, Cupid's Undie Run held i ts first run in Washington, DC outside of the nation's Capitol Building. In 2016, the run will expand into 36 cities across the nation and three runs in Australia. Each run operates from the support of volunteers - creating an organized and enjoyable experience for its 25,000+ runners. I'm in the midst of a couple hard weeks of volume and tempo. I'm going to run the Groton Marathon this weekend as a long training run. I've got a couple listeners who have stepped up and said they're going to come along. I took the week after the Galloway as a step back week. I did a couple of easier Fartlek runs to let my legs get a bit of recovery before this last big push. This week I knocked off a solid 1:30 step up run. My zone 3 and zone 4 efforts are 15 seconds a mile faster than goal pace – so that bodes well. I'm going to do a 2 hour step up tomorrow that should be somewhere in the 14 mile range. Next week I'll repeat those efforts and cap it with a 20 miler. Then I'm going to taper and take a swing at the Rock n Roll Phoenix race on the 17th. It's not ideal, but If I'm going to requalify in time to get reseeded at Boston I'm out of time. If I can work on my strength training and dial in my nutrition to drop a couple pounds I should be right on my goal pace. It's not guaranteed. But I have to commit. If you dither and give yourself outs you'll never accomplish your goals. You need to have the ‘There is no plan B' attitude. So that's it. I'm committed. Over the next 3 weeks I'm going to do the work I can. It's going to come down to a little bit of luck and a disciplined race execution. …Last week. In addition to all the fine automobilia brochures I was getting a bunch of calls on my cell phone from various states. I'd answer them or they'd leave a message. Sometimes they'd ask for ‘Harry' and I'd tell them it was a wrong number. Sometimes they'd ask about my interest in earning an online degree. It wasn't until one of them asked for Harry Potter that I figured out what was going on. Someone had filled out an interest form for colleges using my phone number and Harry Potter's name. At first I was annoyed but then I'd be like “Are you listening to what you're saying? You're asking for Harry Potter, really?” Anyhow I'm just explaining it to them now. I mean if you're an admissions assistance for an online college you don't need me adding to your misery. I joked with my kids that I should start asking about Wizarding classes and such. But – my best story from last week is about ancient smells. I had to pack for a week in Atlanta, including a race. I am a business traveler and I use a small roller-board and I WILL NOT check a bag. I had to figure out how to get all my stuff into the one bag. The item of clothing that takes up the most space is my size 12D Hoka Clifton 2's that I'm currently running in. I decided I'd wear these on the plane and save the space in my bag. Now, I've been running in these shoes since the middle of August. You figure 30 miles a week for 16 weeks is north of 400 miles. Many of these miles were hot and sweaty. These shoes are rather well-used, salt encrusted and aromatic. I get on the plane to Atlanta and get upgraded to 1st class. I kick my shoes off to let them air out a bit and give my feet some breathing room too. The steward comes by with the tray for the meal service – (yes they still serve meals in 1st class). On the tray he's balanced a nice full glass of red wine. As he places the tray on my tray table the nice full glass of red win drops off the front directly between my legs. I have one of those ‘Oh shit!' moments. There is a moment of good natured chaos. But I discover that the wine totally missed my (white) pants and merely glanced off my computer bag.Where did the wine go? Well it neatly filled up my size 12D Hokas. Now I've got a pair of wine-soaked running shoes that I have to race in the next day. The attendant was mortified as I poured wine out of my shoes, but assured them it wasn't the end of the world. They had given me another great story to tell and if that was the worst thing to happen to me I'm leading a charmed life indeed. More noticeable was the incredibly unique aroma of old sweat and cheap wine. I've wandered this planet for many years and I don't think I've ever smelled anything like that. A very rich, full-bodied smell with notes of dead animal carcass, you might say. I smiled when I thought about the race the next day and people wondering what that smell was. Maybe I'd be like the pied piper attracting all the middle-aged Galloway women with my secret wine pheromones. Then I thought, maybe this isn't a unique smell. Maybe this is a very ancient smell. Maybe this is the smell of Greek and Roman warriors. Maybe I had rediscovered the scent of Pheidippides himself. I was going to do a whole bit about the wild reindeer catching the zombie virus, but since it’s the holidays I won’t mess with you. Today we have a really good talk with Bobby Gill from Cupid’s Undie Run about his adventure. I’m always a bit hesitant when a publicist reaches out to me about someone or something. I always worry about doing the same interview as 10 other podcasters. That really doesn’t add any value to you folks. But, I resonated with Bobby and really enjoyed our chat. He does this ‘aww-shucks we just got lucky’ routine but you can tell there’s some focus and talent in the background for him and the Undie run to get so big so fast. In section one I’m going to talk about strength training. In section two I’m going to wax poetic about 9 key moments in the runner’s journey. Last time I talked to you folks I was rolling off of the Mill Cities Relay and getting ready for the Jeff Galloway ½ in Atlanta. I’ve continued to have great training weeks and am feeling fairly strong. I treated the ½ marathon as a pace run and didn’t taper for it. I have pivoted my training from speedwork to long tempo. From the races I’ve done recently it shows me that I have enough speed but I need to work on strength and staying power. I raced the previous Sunday then did two hard 1:20 step up tempo runs during the week. I was also fighting some sort of cold all week. A travel race in the middle of December is just the worst timing, but I had to be in Atlanta all week anyhow so I just went down early. It was an opportunity for me to test out my pacing strategy to meet some old friends from the pod-o-sphere community and to check out a new race. I’m not going to go into full race report mode for you here. And I’m certainly not going to debate the Galloway training stuff. It’s not for me, but kudos to Jeff for lowering the barrier to entry to running for so many people. He’s doing good work with his flock. Overall the race is extremely well managed – everything went off without a hitch. The weather was good – maybe a little warm if you were back in the pack. I ran in short-shorts and singlet. I was soaked when I finished but it didn’t affect my running. The course was actually interesting and had some pretty parts for a city course. The defining feature was the hills. I have worked and run in Atlanta for years. I know it’s a hilly place. Running a ½ marathon through it is challenging. Jeff told me that it’s actually a downhill course because the finish in Piedmont Park is a bit lower than the start. It’s a very hilly course. If you know Atlanta you know that they aren’t periodic steep hills, like in a New England race where you might have a 500 foot monster somewhere on the course. They are consistent long, shallow uphills and downhills. You’re always either climbing or descending. It made it hard for me to execute my pacing strategy. I forgot my Garmin at home and was pacing old-school off my IronMan watch – which isn’t a problem for me. I was intending to try to pace at just under my marathon goal pace of 8 min miles. The hills made pacing kind of impossible so I just ran by feel. This is a course where it would have really helped to know the course. The course is a bit deceptive at the end because they run you by and around the park a couple times. You are essentially circling the finish line for 3+ miles. Tim Cleary had told me there was a big hill at mile 9ish and then a steep downhill into the park. That was the landmark I was looking for. There was a big hill at the 9 mile mark, but that wasn’t the one Tim was talking about. There was the steepest hill on the course around 10 miles with a long steep decent after, then you turn into the park. Tactically this is where I screwed up. After climbing the big hill in good order I got to the steep downhill and thought to myself “The turn into the park is at the bottom of this hill so I’ll spend what I have here on the downhill and cruise into the finish.” The problem with that was once you turn into the park it’s still a couple miles of rolling hills to get to the finish. I struggled the last couple miles in the park on dead legs. Not what I was intending to do but still finished under my target average pace. That tells me I probably went out to fast. I hung around the finishing chute giving out encouraging words and high fives in the warm Atlanta sun. …I’ll tell you a couple of ‘big data’ stories from the week. Now it’s the holiday season so I expect to get my share of junk mail from people trying to sell me stuff. I noticed over the last month I’ve been getting flooded with targeted advertisements for fancy cars. Every day I get some glossy brochure and personal invite letter from Lexus and Jaguar and Range Rover. I was trying to figure out what demographic inflection point I had tripped in the great consumer database in the cloud. Why did BMW, Mercedes and Audi think that I was ripe for the picking? I figured it was probably my age and my income level. I’m ripe for a mid-life crisis car. But it all seemed rather sudden and targeted. Then I was out on a long run with my friend Ryan in the Town Forest last weekend and we were talking about it. Ryan owns a marketing firm. We figured it out. You see, all the college financial data is public domain data. The great marketing data bureaus know that I just sent my last college tuition check. And that same day the handsome glossies for shiny, new, carefully hand-crafted by Austrian engineers, glinting in the desert sun as a slightly greying athletic male model grins at the abundance of life, while leaning into a challengingly scenic corner in the road from a warm, self-heating leather seat…began arriving by the bundle in my mail box. The money raised benefits the Children's Tumor Foundation (CTF), a nonprofit organization that funds research to fi nd treatments and a cure for neurofibromatosis (NF). Presented by Sock It To Me as the official underwear sponsor, Cupid's Undie Run combines a pre-race party, a one mi le -ish undie run and an after party. Cupid's Undie Run will take place on February 13 and February 20. In 2010, founders Brendan Hanrahan, Chad Leathers and Bobby Gill set off on a mission to raise awareness and donations to CTF after Chad's brother was di agnosed with NF, a genetic disorder that can cause tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body, which can lead to blindness, deafness, learning disabilities, cancer and chronic pain. Affecting more than two millio n people, NF often requires patients to undergo numerous medical procedures. Since 2010, Cupid's Undie Run has donated nearly $8 million to CTF.
