Marbled Meat to host house concert Strolling down Main Street in Beacon while eating, drinking and making merry on a beautiful weekend day, Aaron Miller outlined his vision for a music series that "builds community," a phrase often bandied about. But he gets things done. His first show with blues guitarist Jon Shain takes place on Sunday (May 18) at an unusual venue: the Marbled Meat Shop on Route 9 in Philipstown. Miller created a logo for what he calls his "butcher block party." "I always wanted to do house concerts and thought it would be a bougie thing with wine and cheese for 20 friends, but my girlfriend figured that we might ruin the carpet," Miller said. The couple decided to hold it outside, but when Lisa Hall of Marbled Meat heard about the plan, she urged caution. "Lisa goes, 'You know, you'll trample the lawn and maybe affect the septic tank, so why not have it here and we can do a pop-up barbecue?' " The BYOB event will raise money and collect non-perishables for the Philipstown Food Pantry. "When I heard about cuts to meals programs, I got fired up and decided that I had to give back," says Miller, who moved to Beacon in January. "On Saturday morning, 63 families signed up to get fed, and that kills me." Hosting the show provides a kid-friendly alternative to live music in a bar, says Hall. After Marbled opened 10 years ago, it presented Tall Country and other groups. "Now the tunes have come back in an organic way," she said. Shain, who lives in North Carolina, attended Duke University in the 1990s. So did Miller, a fan of the guitarist's college band, Flyin' Mice, which broke up long ago. "I guess I was on his short list all these years," says Shain, who will teach and perform at the Acoustic Getaway guitar camp in Stony Point this weekend. Specializing in post-World War I Mississippi Delta blues, Shain plays with bare fingers and often uses a thumb pick to pluck the bottom strings. Strumming is rare. Masters of this mesmerizing form seem to simulate two instruments playing at once. After branching into jazz, ragtime and bluegrass, Shain partnered with a music publisher to release two instructional books, Jon Shain's Fingerstyle Guitar Method and Gettin' Handy With the Blues, a reference to W.C. Handy, author of "St. Louis Blues," one of the genre's oldest and most popular songs. The concert will take place on the covered patio. Inside the shop, shelves showcase goods from local craft creators like LL Pottery and Maria Pierogi, along with Understory Market and Split Rock Books on Main Street in Cold Spring. "We know the experience of running errands down there on the weekends, so we brought some of them up here to support other businesses and help people avoid the crowds," says Hall. Miller is already planning his next butcher block party. "I'm good at stirring up trouble and trying to make a difference," he says. "There's always a sense of community that centers on eating, drinking and music. Marbled Meat was crazy enough to let me do this." Marbled Meat is located at 3091 Route 9 in Philipstown. The concert begins at 3 p.m. on May 18; a $20 donation is requested.

The Shortwave Collective describe themselves as “an international feminist group using the radio spectrum as artistic material.” I was first intrigued by their piece Receive-Transmit-Receive, an exquisite corpse of audio, in which members each contributed their own recordings of sounds from across the radio spectrum. But what really affected me was their ongoing public education project of teaching people to make their own no-power, low-budget radios called open-wave receivers. They've held radio-making workshops in Portugal, France, and the UK and they've published a how-to in Make magazine. I wanted to talk to the Shortwave Collective because they are presenting a radically different vision of what radio is and can be. Radio's history can be thought of as an extended expression of military, political, commercial, and cultural dominance. But the Collective embraces play, experimentation, failure, community, and open listening in their feminist radio practice. So, let's talk to the Shortwave Collective and see if we can rethink radio–what it's for and what it can do.   And in the second half of the show, we'll hear an audio documentary in which the Shortwave Collective teaches you how to make your own open-wave receiver. #138 Heartbeat of the Neighborhood - Lisa Hall, Montavilla Farmer's Market

Meaningful Marketplace Podcast

2007 Was the birthday party for Montavilla Famers Market of Portland, Oregon, when the local residents and business people decided to get together, raise some money and provide a community resource. It has remained a staple for the neighborhood and indeed the city and is still located on the same grounds. In 2020, Lisa Hall joined as the Marketing Manager, doing such an outstanding job that about a month ago, she was named Executive Director of the entire operation. It's only natural. Not only does Lisa have a marketing background, she lives in the Montavilla area, circulates amongst the neighbors and truly has an ear to the ground for the community's desires for an open marketplace. Montavilla is the real Goldilocks size; not too big and not too small, 80-90 vendors during the year. That gives the populace a place to shop for craft foods without being crushed by the masses and yet have a great selection of specialties to take home. Lisa has a solid background for running the Montavilla market, having been part of the Portland Farmers Market previously. That organization ran five market places and was one of the largest in the area. The big difference was of course resources; the Portland organization had more vendors and revenue and could do special events such as bringing in name chefs for demonstrations. However, the neighborhood market scene caters to the loyal neighbors who live close by, shop regularly and it maintains a family feel you don't get with the big crowd of large events. In fact, a survey recently showed about half of the people at the market walked there from their home. To become a vendor, a company applies online and if their product looks enticing and like it would add to the overall offering of the market, they are invited to present to a taste test group for a final approval. If the company has a viable product that would appeal to the shoppers, then space obviously is the next consideration, as a small, intimate marketplace needs to remain small. That aspect comes into play during seasonal items, such as fruits and berries, which take up a lot of the limited room. Another wrinkle about being a reflection of the neighborhood is recognizing its ethnicity. Not only does the market offer ethnic foods desired by the community, the market's website highlights them in different languages to cater to the people living there. And in keeping with their mission to provide local, healthy food to the community, a vendor requirement is that at least 25% of their ingredients be sourced directly from farmers. Many vendors source an even larger percentage and therefore stand out. This guideline keeps the authenticity and vision of the boutique market alive. Plus, it adds to the farm-direct offering of dairy products, farm-direct wines, beers, ciders and even beans and grains by solidly engaging the local farmers. The market is open fulltime year-round now as the vendors and farmers wanted the outlet for their foods and the neighbors were delighted to have fresh foods offered year round. Win-win. So you have a number of businesses trying to survive and shoppers looking for their food treasures. The rhythm of the market meets the rhythm of the community. Harmony on display. Lisa and Kristen talk about the importance of pausing annually to honor married couples in an intentional way to raise awareness of the vocation to married life as well as to inspire more young people to think about their particular vocation. Father Hage highlights how Bishop Lucia believes that every vocation comes from the home, and that if we desire to see an increase in vocations we have to start with supporting family life and the vocation to marriage. Marriage is truly the seedbed of all vocations.

In recent years, we've seen an explosion of interest in ESG investing, and private equity firms are part of that growing trend.    In this episode of ESG Insider, we sit down with Lisa Hall, Impact Chair at Apollo Global Management. Apollo is one of the largest investing firms in the U.S. and pursues a number of strategies ranging from investment grade debt to private equity. Lisa talks about how ESG is becoming "table stakes" across industries and investment strategies.    She also explains how Apollo's new private equity impact investing strategy aims to fill ESG financing gaps in education, health, safety, wellness and economic opportunity.    "We very clearly are providing services and products that certain markets have not traditionally had access to," Lisa says. "That additionality and focus on underserved markets is something that we haven't explicitly or intentionally done in the traditional flagship funds that we are doing with a great deal of intention in the impact strategy." We'd love to hear from you. According to Versant Health’s Lisa Hall and Kelly Wenrich, more employers are recognizing that offering vision benefits is a cost-effective way to reduce health-related absenteeism and health care premiums, while increasing productivity.   Providing a vision care plan to employees gives employers a “leg up on the competition” because it’s a benefit not yet commonplace in the recruitment process, says Kelly Wenrich, director of client management for Versant Health.   Wenrich also points out that when employees take care of their vision, they are healthier and more productive, which can benefit the company overall.    Encouraging employees and their families to have annual eye exams can be a relatively low-cost and minimally invasive way for them to gain a window into their overall health.    “A comprehensive eye exam is much more than reading an eye chart,” says Lisa Hall, Versant’s regional vice president of third party commercial sales. She adds that more than 25 chronic health conditions can be identified through an eye exam and that surprisingly, 20% of people diagnosed with diabetes first learned of their condition through a routine eye exam.   Both Wenrich and Hall say that offering a vision care benefit requires very little commitment from employers, both operationally and financially, yet it can be a key component for increasing employee satisfaction and loyalty.    Press play to hear more from Hall and Wenrich on ways to encourage vision care enrollment, its effect on pricing and network choice, and its role in early detection of chronic conditions.

Dr. Mark Ruchman and Lisa Hall of Versant Health discuss how vision care and coverage can impact key stages of advancement in childhood. Experts report that vision health is intricately linked to a child’s ability to learn and develop socially. “Simply, children can’t learn if they can’t see” says Dr. Mark Ruchman, Versant Health’s chief medical officer, but young children “don’t know what they don’t know.” While adults can sense a change in vision, younger children may simply cope due to a lack of understanding about what they are experiencing, he adds. Ruchman stresses that vision evaluations are a central component of comprehensive health care for children and can provide a wealth of wellness indicators. Annual eye exams can help evaluate vision and identify if a child is at the appropriate neurological and social stage for their age. In turn, the information can be shared with educators and pediatricians who work together for the benefit of the child, says Ruchman. The widespread introduction of remote learning over the past year has significantly increased screen time for many children and adults, says Lisa Hall, Versant Health’s regional vice president of third-party commercial sales. “Adults and kids spend most of their day in front of a computer, tablet or phone,” says Hall, which is significantly increasing eye strain issues. According to Hall, one in four school-aged children have vision problems that can affect learning and development. She says this is why vision experts recommend an eye exam at birth, 6 months old, 3-4 years old, just prior to entering kindergarten, and then every year following. “So much of society is based on visual learning,” adds Dr. Ruchman, “and children need to begin their formative years by seeing well.”   Press play to hear Dr. Ruchman and Lisa Hall further discuss the links between vision and childhood development, the nationwide “Vision to Learn” initiative and why it’s important to consider the employee’s entire family when determining vision plan coverage.

We kick off this season with a deeper look at the meaning of our phrase “changing how the economy functions,” specifically examining what you may have heard of as “social entrepreneurship,” which is the idea that entrepreneurial ventures should measure themselves not just by revenue but also by metrics that capture their broader impact on the social and natural environment.Impact investing takes many forms. It can be venture firms seeking out so called “double bottom line“ or even “triple bottom line” returns, meaning financial & social returns or financial & social & environmental. In fact, there is a venture firm called DBL Partners - double bottom line - one of whose portfolio companies we’ve had on the show- Zola Electric. DBL invested in another company you may have heard of - Tesla - which is probably the most high profile, but not the only proof point that impact investing is not charitable giving. Impact investing can also refer to the idea of investors screening for or against certain types of activities. The institutional approach is the idea of ESG investing. ESG stands for environmental, social, governance. ESG investors are typically mutual funds or financial companies with specific funds that invest in companies that are promoting those aims or perhaps which are improving their own internal practices. How big is ESG? According to Morningstar, there are about 275 ESG open-end mutual funds and ETFs available in the U.S.. And according to Deloitte, 75% of investors applied ESG principles to at least a quarter of their portfolios in 2019. Another sign of how far this idea has come is that the incoming director of the National Economic Council, Brian Deese, most recently led BlackRock’s ESG investing, in other words, one of the most prominent economist positions in the country is about to be inhabited by an ESG guy. Some of the more well known impact VCs include DBL, and Revolution’s Rise of the Rest, whom we’ve also featured on M4Edge. There are many other examples, all with ambitious aims, including the HEED fund, The Impact Engine, SustainVC, Village Capital, Better Ventures and many more. We’ve decided to delve into a few of these areas, with the help of three guests. First, we’re joined by Sonal Shah, the Executive Director of the Beeck Center at Georgetown. Sonal is so steeped in the world of impact that we asked her to cohost this episode. Sonal interviews Lisa Green Hall, the Impact Chair at Apollo Global Management, but has held many roles in this space, as is really one of the pioneers of the field. But we’re technophiles here at M4Edge, so we also interview Steve Tanner, the founder and CTO of EcoRobotix, a Swiss ag-tech company whose mission is to “develop, produce and sell innovative farming machines that require low energy and that reduce the negative ecological impact of modern agriculture, while keeping costs competitive.”

They say sometimes the things that you need to experience and learn yourself are the things that you're most able to help other people with. The last few years I've been doing extensive research on positive psychology, which is a relatively new aspect of the psychology field that's really come into its own over the last 20 years. Positive Psychology actually looks at the science of what makes us happy. They've done experiments about what makes people happy. What is this thing that evades us? It really is the driving force behind what everybody wants. If you ask anybody if they want to be happy, the answer is always going to be yes. We go about trying to achieve happiness from all these outside sources which is an interesting thing. But according to his research, circumstances only factor 10% in our happiness equation." - Lisa Hall, Happiness Coach, Yogi & Entrepreneur.
