Ep 439 - A Recipe for a Life Well-Lived Guest: Dr. Doug Clement “May you live long and prosper” (“dif-tor-heh”) is an idiom from a Jewish term and is popularly attributed to Commander Spock of Star Trek. While that may be so, it is also an apt description of the life of Dr. Doug Clement. “The questions,” asks Clement, “is how do you do both? Live long and prosper?” The average life expectancy in British Columbia is just north of 82 years. “So living long isn't the issue,” says Clement, “but living long isn't a guarantee [that] you will live well, especially when you cross the 60-year mark.” According to Clement, there are a plethora of factors that contribute to wellness. He says they include “physical and mental fitness, an ongoing sense of purpose and contribution, a sufficient amount of money to alleviate financial stress, and happiness.” Clement also points to the findings of the Grant Study of Adult Development, a Harvard program that tracked the lives of 238 people between 1938 and 2000, which states, “The surprising finding is that our relationships and how happy we are in our relationships has a powerful influence on our health.” We invited Dr. Doug Clement to join us for a Conversation That Matters about his recipe for a life well-lived. Die Crew um Captain. Kirk und Commander Spock ist Serien-Kult. Vor 56 Jahren flimmerte in den USA die erste Folge der Serie "Raumschiff Enterprise" über die Bildschirme.
What's there to say about this classic episode (later riffed about on Lower Decks) beyond the fact it's got some fantastic lewks for Captain Kirk and Commander Spock? The Enterprise beams down during the "Red Hour" of Beta III, a planet run by a totally-real-not-a-computer definitely not a 1960's slight at Communism being called "Landru." But mostly it's all about those cool 1800s costumes and backlot sets of what should be... THE HOLODECK! Post by Skyler J. Collins (Editor). Episode 005 is a look at Star Trek characters Captain Kirk, Doctor McCoy, and Commander Spock as they relate to Stoicism, as written about by Jen Farren in February 2014.
Well, listeners, it's finally happened. It was inevitable, really. It was clear right from the beginning that one day, these events would occur. Most of us never believed in the prophecy, but here we are. Smash Fiction has finally, officially caught the slashfic bug (MeganBob is actually the disease's primary carrier, so yeah, should have seen that one coming). Not only that, but we've infected the Gameable Podcast with it, as well. Kris and Katrina had no choice but to return to our show once again, this time for a series of arguments that would be purely speculative if they weren't so completely obvious. Smash Fiction's pledge has always been to answer the big questions, and this week, we tackle one of the biggest there's ever been. If, in one room, you were to put James Tiberius Kirk captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise, and his first officer, Commander Spock, and in another room, you put Frodo Baggins and his faithful friend and gardener, Samwise Gamgee...which hypothetical dream couple would be the first to throw out their inhibitions and get busy? Will Kris use the sheer depth of his Lord of the Rings philosophy to defeat Dan's insistence on things like facts and evidence? Will Katrina realize her secret destiny as a wedding planner? Will MeganBob somehow be able to prevent herself from shipping other characters during this process? And how can Claire possibly make a decision between the two? At long last, the definitive answers to all these questions lie within your grasp...if, that is, your mind can survive the experience.
In this episode, we are doing things a bit differently! Hurley and Nimoy. Last week, the Star Trek family lost two members whose contributions to the franchise were enormous, Maurice Hurley and Leonard Nimoy. Hurley was a writer/producer who ran Star Trek: The Next Generation through its first two seasons. Amongst his many contributions was the creation of the Borg. Nimoy was the face of Star Trek. His portrayal of Commander Spock on the original series set the tone for everything that has come since. Behind the camera, he directed two of the most popular TOS movies, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. In this episode of Commentary: Trek Stars, Max, John and Mike take a look at the careers of Hurley and Nimoy both inside and out of Star Trek, and discuss how their art has impacted us personally. This week we join in the fun of the ongoing Kirk/Spock feud, which apparently will go on even when they're both dead. We discuss the origins of the sports anthem Rock & Roll Part 2 and talk about President Clinton's hilarious portrait with a familiar shadow and literally -- everything in between. It's another great episode of the Dave Juskow show. :) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
