Industrialization changed the landscape, leaving naked soil and overcrowded animals in its wake.    She is a fierce champion for the environmental, economic, and human health benefits of organic food and farming. Melody earned her BA in anthropology from the University of Minnesota-Duluth. She and her husband Andy live in a very small house in rural Minnesota with their English Lab, Beau. Tom, along with his wife Denesse, operated T&D Willey Farms from 1981 until 2016, a seventy-five-acre Certified Organic farm in Madera, California, growing a wide array of Mediterranean vegetables the year round. Tom says, “we've got to figure out how to live on agriculture without destroying the natural systems that support its productivity.” He says organic is all about living biology and the diversity of biology and and the all of the living organisms in your soil. Monte and Tom have a great conversation about all these things and so much more. T&D Willey Farms produce was appreciated in specialty markets and fine restaurants up and down the U.S. West Coast as well as on the tables of over 800 weekly Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) subscription members in their own community. Tom was, for nearly a decade, Slow Food USA's governor for California's Central Valley and he passionately advocates for local food prominence through his writing, speaking, radio, and event organizing activities. His monthly "Down on the Farm" radio interview program features the work of progressive farmers and others prominent in San Joaquin Valley's agriculture and food communities. Tom has served over the years on the boards of directors of the Ecological Farming Association (EFA) and California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) and presently is a member of CCOF Certification Services' five-person LLC Management Committee. He currently serves as a Policy Advisor to The Cornucopia Institute which monitors integrity of the U.S. organic industry. Kestrel Burcham is the Policy Director for the Cornucopia Institute. The Cornucopia Institute acts as a watchdog for the organic industry and advocates for an organic label that can be trusted. In this fascinating conversation, Dianne and Kestrel talk about the benefits of organic agriculture, how the Cornucopia Institute advocates for the industry, how consumers can help shift conventional agriculture to organic, and more! Kestrel lives in northwest Oregon, in the lush Willamette Valley. Kestrel has a background in Animal Science and English from the University of California, Davis. They have worked as an animal technician in both research and industry settings and have experience with different types of livestock. Organic and environmentally conscious food production is part of their background, having grown up on familial farms and assisted in all aspects of farm management. Their favorite part of living with the land has always been getting their hands dirty caring for and nurturing crops that would end up on the dinner table. Kestrel Burcham holds a J.D. with a certificate in Environmental and Natural Resource Law from Lewis and Clark Law School. After completing law school and passing the Oregon Bar exam, they practiced in animal and agricultural law for a few years before joining Cornucopia as a policy analyst. Kestrel is particularly passionate about sustainable agricultural, environmental protection, and animal welfare. As a policy director, Kestrel champions authentic organic agriculture in their research, writing, education, and direct advocacy. #105: Real Organic Project co-director Linley Dixon addresses a crowd of farmers at the recent Eco-Farm conference, sharing her concerns about the money grab for "climate smart" agriculture projects that are focusing on increased chemical use. Meanwhile, organic, a systems-based  approach, got little attention and is deemed too complex to measure.Linley Dixon is the co-director of the Real Organic Project, as well as the owner and operator of Adobe House Farm in Durango, Colorado.  She holds a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from the University of Florida and also held a 2-year post-doctorate with the USDA's Systematic Botany and Mycology Laboratory. Linley has studied fungal plant pathogens from around the world and has studied the impact of farm biodiversity on plant disease levels. While USDA-certified organic food still accounts for a small fraction of total U.S. food sales, it's now big business. In 2020, data from the Organic Trade Association showed sales of organic food rose at a record rate to a new high of $56.4 billion, and as the industry has become more lucrative, fraud and cheating have increased. The Cornucopia Institute is a non-profit watchdog organization that has been working to hold companies and the USDA accountable to organic's original ideals around soil health, animal welfare, and more. At the  2020 Vision event over 1,000 attendees came to discuss the opportunities and challenges for the future of organic food and farming. Recent Farm To Table Talk  and keynote speaker Bob Quinn offered 5 big solutions to becoming "chemical free in 43". Two other keynote presentations that also earned standing ovations were by Dr. Jonathan Lundgren on transforming science for a regenerative agricultural revolution and Leah Penniman the author of Farming While Black. Technical difficulties left us with little time for a full length show today but I think Coop&Myan made the most of their limited session. We like to set the bar low so every show is a smashing success. Complaints about faulty equipment, a protracted discussion on the many different types of modern, alternative milk (and how disgusting they are to we traditional milk fans) and of course how you can be a better person by simply choosing the product 2 inches to the left. Yes the hypocrisy in choosing any cow milk over the other disgusting options is not lost. My apologies. Organic Valley may not be the most ethical milk you can buy but it sure as hell beats the overalls off of Horizon. Organic Valley cows have almost twice the outdoor pasture-time as Horizon cows and while Horizon operates hundreds of farms, 11 of them being corporate, Organic Valley is America's largest farmer-owned organic cooperative. Out of a 0-5 point rating scale the Cornucopia Institute gave an excellent rating of 4/5 for Organic Valley while Horizon received 0/5 and was deemed “ethically deficient.” Read the article in the links for more info. In August of 2010, Peter and Linley Dixon moved to Durango with their daughter Raina to start an organic farm, Adobe House Farm, with the mission of providing year-round, pesticide free fruits and vegetables. With help from friends and family, they built a four-season greenhouse, installed fencing, irrigation, and two hoop houses. They sold produce at the Durango Farmers Market, wholesale, and offered a 13-member CSA. Throughout the 2011-2012 winter they grew greens in the greenhouse and tunnels and sold produce to 3 local restaurants, Durango Natural Food Co-op, and to families who scheduled weekly orders.In 2015, they had expanded to the point that they hired two more employees, and were able to offer a CSA to 110 families in Durango as well as greatly expanding offerings at the Durango Farmers 19 Market and to local restaurants.THE CORNUCOPIA INSTITUTE, through research and investigations on agricultural and food issues, provides needed information to family farmers, consumers and other stakeholders in the good food movement and to the media. They support economic justice for the family-scale farming community 13 partnered with consumers 13 backing ecologically produced local, organic and authentic food.

Mike interviews Mark Kastel of Cornucopia Institute to discuss the Institute's report "Scrambled Eggs: Separating Factory Farm Egg Production from Authentic Organic Agriculture." The gold standard in organic egg production, according to Mark, is smaller, pasture-raised flocks, and these are the farms that earn the coveted 5-egg rating in the accompanying egg scorecard.  At about 14 minutes, Mark starts drawing a distinction between pasture-raised and enhanced outdoor access. Enhanced outdoor access (a 4 egg rating), he says, is what mainstream organic consumers think they're getting, but the prevailing marketplace reality is not even close.
