Friday night will be one of the earliest times in a season that Covington Catholic and Highlands will renew their football rivalry. But, it also happens on a night when the kickoff will happen an hour later than normal (8 p.m.) due to the expected heat index. Even as the teams adjust practice schedules this week to the heat, there is plenty of anticipation building for Friday night at David Cecil Memorial Stadium. "It's going to be a really exciting game and we're all really getting ready," Highlands senior quarterback Brody Benke said. "It's just different. Everyone feels more locked in and practice is way more intense. Everyone is ready for Friday to come." Benke, senior tight end/defensive end Luke Schneider along with Highlands coach Bob Sphire joined the WCPO High School Insider Podcast to discuss Friday's game against CovCath. "Great football team; it ought to be a killer game," Sphire said. "It ought to be a classic follow-up. They just won against a really, really good football team in Ryle. They do such a great job. (CovCath coach) Eddie (Eviston) is a really good ball coach. He'll have them obviously ready." Highlands (1-0) defeated host Lexington Catholic 34-27 Aug. 18. Benke was 12 of 17 passing for 194 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed 19 times for 111 yards and two touchdowns. He also had two receptions for 42 yards and a touchdown. Schneider had two sacks on defense. CovCath (1-0) defeated visiting Ryle 37-22 Aug. 18. The Colonels held a 20-0 first-quarter lead against Ryle. Senior quarterback Evan Pitzer was 17 of 24 passing for 271 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for a touchdown. Senior running back Owen Leen had 16 carries for 96 yards and three touchdowns. CovCath coach Eddie Eviston said the Bluebirds will be a significant test on Friday night. "It's going to be a battle," Eviston said. "They are a very talented team. We got to be ready." CovCath (9-3 record in 2022) returns plenty of talent this season as it moves to Class 4A. The Colonels were in Class 5A last season. "The biggest thing right now is our guys are showing up to work," CovCath coach Eddie Eviston said. "We have a little different outlook on the year because of the different scenery with the different class, different district. It's one of those things you can't worry about that. We work every day and those guys have handled it real well." Senior quarterback Evan Pitzer and senior tight end Willie Rodriguez joined the podcast and discussed how close the team has been all year. "I'd say we're like all family," Pitzer said. "We'll hang out together. And I think that helps us on the field with the chemistry. We know what each other is going to do. But, not only that but I think we're hungry. We lost to Frederick Douglass last year in the second round. Our goal is a state championship every year, year in and year out. And I think a lot of guys want that and we're going to work it this year." Eviston said Pitzer and Rodriguez are among the leaders of an experienced group this year for the Colonels who open the season against visiting Ryle Aug. 18. "They've been a vital part of our program for the last two years," Eviston said. "As they enter their senior year we look to them for leadership. These guys continue to step up."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Highlands at Covington Catholic football game is certainly the marquee matchup in Northern Kentucky this week. "Oh man, it's a big deal up here," Highlands coach Bob Sphire said. Both teams have won six consecutive games entering the Class 5A showdown in Park Hills which is also the WCPO game of the week. "It is what high school sports is all about," CovCath coach Eddie Eviston said. CovCath (6-1) has won eight consecutive games over the Bluebirds (6-2) going back to 2016 but the past doesn't matter to the teams entering Friday night. "You have to play 48 minutes," Sphire said. "Every play can be the difference in the game. It's one of those slobbernockers. It's going to be old school in a lot of ways." Sphire and senior linebacker Sam Robinson joined the WCPO High School Insider podcast to discuss this rivalry with CovCath. You will also hear from Wyoming coach Aaron Hancock explain why he thinks senior running back CJ Hester is the best running back in the state of Ohio. And you'll hear from St. Xavier coach Steve Specht reflecting on his friendship with Cleveland St. Ignatius coach Chuck Kyle. St. X plays host to St. Ignatius Saturday afternoon in Kyle's final game in Cincinnati. The longtime Wildcats coach is retiring at the end of the season. "I consider Chuck a very dear friend," Specht said. "He's been a dear friend to me." -- More at https://www.wcpo.com/highschoolinsider  --See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the public release of February 2019's Patreon bonus episode, Jaye discusses the news story from January 2019 about the confrontation in Washington DC, between Catholic high school students from Northern Kentucky and a Native American elder. How does a seemingly straightforward news story, complete with video, morph into a controversy dividing society along the familiar lines of partisanship and race? Jaye happens to live in the same metropolitan area the school is located, and she gives her unique insight on the events and underlying issues, as well as the symbolism of the Make America Great Again hats worn by the students. For the public release, Jaye also provides an update of the incident, and reframes it in light of Black Lives Matter and America's current reckoning with its treatment of black and indigenous people of color (BIPOC). The media is giving Nancy Pelosi all the credit for ending the shutdown, but we do not think she deserves it. The real work was done by the federal workers who just said, "Nah, not working for free." And, did an extended video of the MAGA Teens Incident last week change the narrative about the fracas? We say it does not - they are exactly who we saw them to be in the first place. So why is the media exonerating them?

The latter were harassing the students, calling them "white crackers", "incest children", and "faggots". The Covington students in turn decided to drown out the Israelites with the school's chants - "Cov Cath is the best". At that moment, Phillips considered that things were getting "ugly" and decided to intervene. He led an Indigenous People's March, in which he participated, to divide the students and the Black Israelites, while singing a tribal song and beating his drum. At some point he turned to go through the students' mob, with most of them gradually making way for the leader of the unexpected performance.
